I humbly submit Princess Cimorene as a candidate
Princess Cimorene of Linderwall is Dangerously Genre Savvy. But is she going to approach Castle Dracula as a Fairytale protagonist or as a Horror protagonist? Is she Genre Savvy enough to force a genre shift in her favor? And what is Dracula but a nasty old Dragon - and Cimorene certainly has plenty of experience dealing with dragons...
I guess the first point is that Cimorene is going to die of Old Age. That was her deal with that Djinn she freed. It is stunningly difficult to die of Old Age in Castle Dracula.
But okay, lets be fair. Let us assume that when she says "I'd rather be eaten by a Dragon" the unprincely frog directs her not to Kazul but to Dracula (always remember to be careful what you wish for, kids). Can she survive based on her starting stats alone? That is, spunk, genre savvy, latin verbs, and cherries jubilee.
As a fairytale heroine, Cimorene is not going to refuse any gifts offered her. As a dangerously genre savvy fairytale heroine, if the sinister lord of the creepy castle tells her not to sleep outside of her room, she is not going to sleep outside of her room. She knows how this works.
I think the primary hurdle is going to be whether Dracula tolerates her initial frankness. Cimorene can quickly learn how to handle his personality, but only if she survives opening with Refuge in Audacity. Dracula doesn't appreciate being back talked, but she might take him sufficiently by surprise that he leaves her alive long enough to see where this goes. And where this goes is that she organizes his library then starts in on his treasure hoard and before he knows it she's taught herself basic Scholomancy and replaced the curtains in the ladies wing amd dusted everywhere and he honestly doesn't know how he got on without her and he patronizingly indulges her Absolutely No Biting Me rules (it's because she's useful, not because she won't take off that crucifix, he tells himself) and doesn't even realize he is no longer remotely running this show.
A sticking point is going to be the whole Evil Vampire thing. Cimorene isn't going to approve of all the assault, kidnapping, and murder - Kazul was a dragon but she wasn't outright evil. She will however be sympathetic to the "Look, everything has to eat" argument. She'll make it her mission to solve vampirism. She's really good at finding creative economic solutions to supernatural problems. I dunno, turn the Castle into a luxury resort for people with a blood drinking kink. You only need to find a couple of them to make the engine work. And if she's persuasive enough to get this far, then she's persuasive enough to talk him into it.
And they all live happily ever after.
So yes, I do believe that Princess Cimorene can survive Castle Dracula

Been on a nostalgia kick lately, re-reading a lot of childhood favorites, and one thing in Dealing With Dragons that hits differently when you read it as an adult is that Cimorene is young.
Like- as a kid, you hear 'sixteen' and figure that's ancient. Practically grown up. In your mind she's basically the same as Kazul and Morwen, and the narrative doesn't seem to challenge that. But then you go back and read this...
"It's just as well that your visitors HAVE been honorable," Morwen said, looking thoughtful. "Linderwall's a prosperous kingdom. Sooner or later, the chance of getting hold of half of it is going to tempt someone to try rescuing you whether you want to be rescued or not."
"...that hadn't occured to me," Cimorene said with a worried frown.
...and you are abruptly reminded that Cimorene is in some ways still a kid.
Like, Cimorene's an intelligent young woman, she's very resourceful, independent and capable, but that does not change the fact that she has a total of only sixteen years' worth of life experience. A very sheltered sixteen years at that- being a princess means she's been constantly supervised, and maybe kept from learning some things that another girl her age might have already worked out. The knights and princes trying to rescue her from Kazul are certainly very annoying, but it's never occurred to her that they could actually be DANGEROUS- because she's never been in a position where they would be. Credit where credit's due, as soon as Morwen gently points this out Cimorene immediately starts doing some mental calculations to figure out other ramifications of her change in status from Princess Of A Kingdom to Dragon Princess without needing to be hand-held, but it definitely would not have occurred to her otherwise.
I think another reason Cimorene's youth never registered with me before, though- and this is a positive one!- is that while Kazul and Morwen are definitely aware of it, they don't treat her like a child. Like- they give her advice. At times they'll politely challenge some assumptions she's grown up with but never explored. They explain things to her that they might not have to with someone else. But never once in that entire book do they EVER talk down to her. There is nothing she's Too Young To Understand, no topic that's off limits, her intelligence is respected and her contributions to discussions about spells/cookery/what to do about the wizard infestation are treated as valuable. And while it's never really acknowledged, we know from Cimorene's life pre-Kazul that this is not an experience she's had before.
Honestly? I find myself wondering if part of Cimorene's constant attempts to learn 'un-princessy' skills as a kid were due, in part, to being treated a certain way while learning the traditional ones. She complained about her embroidery/dancing/diplomacy lessons, but later we realize that she... maybe didn't hate the subjects of those lessons. She's good at them. She considers them (in some ways) useful. But one thing we observe is that no matter how old the princesses in the story get, they are in some ways treated like permanent children, and that drives Cimorene NUTS. I think if those lessons weren't so firmly tied to that infantilization, she might not have resented them so much, but because they were, she was forever seeking out skills practiced by people who (even if they were of lower status) were given a kind of respect she was never likely to get.
When she becomes Kazul's princess and meets Morwen, though, Cimorene finds for the first time that she can get respect WITHOUT having to shed her princess-hood. Similarly, her youth is never treated as a point against her- it's not... an inherent personality trait. If she doesn't understand something, they never react as though that's part for the course, and that there's no way she COULD be expected to understand, they just teach her. They acknowledge her youth, and do try to keep her safe, but in the same way they would for each other. They treat her like an equal.
I like that a lot.
Tl,dr: a mentor who can let you learn while still treating you with unquestioned respect is a wonderful thing, and Dealing With Dragons illustrates that in a really subtle but effective way.

The Heroines Who Wear the Crown: Princess Protagonists in Modern Fantasy
From magical kingdoms to epic quests, princess protagonists have long captivated readers of fantasy literature. While early fantasy works often portrayed princesses as damsels in distress or prizes to be won, modern takes on the archetype have brought nuance, depth and agency to these royal heroines.  Let’s explore some of the most influential princess protagonists in contemporary fantasy…

Spent a lot of time pondering today thanks to a very long MRI, I can now say with certainty that the reason I always liked Dealing with Dragons but not the rest of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles is because DwD is the anti-romance pro-QPP book and then she gets a fucking boyfriend

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Thanks....
Ohhhh that's a hard question
My favourites tend to change depending on which media I'm most obsessed with so I'm going to set some criteria
1. The character has to be from a piece of media I have been into for longer than a year. By which I mean it's survived as something I like and think about even when it's not my current obsession
2. Its favourite character not character identify with the most. There may be some cross over but I have to have a reason other than "I relate to them!"
3. Favourite character does not mean "Character I Think is Nicest" an objectively evil character can be a good character if they are written well
Ok and with that out of the way
10. Adam Young - Good Omens: as much as I love Crowley and Aziraphale I found Adam's journey in the book to be the most compelling. He's at the beginnings of puberty and growing up. The age where all people tend to start figuring out who they are.
He learns things about the world that upset him. That grown-ups don't know what they're doing and the world has so many problems that seem are larger than him. But he has the power to change that but has to learn that can does not equal should
Its very much a coming of age story and is done in a way that I found very poignant
9. Sailor Mercury/Ami - Sailor Moon: Ami is an underrated character in my opinion. She is the smart one and is gentle and helpful and is basically often I think overlooked by the fandom
But I found Ami centric stories to be my favourite. Ami's back story and the issues that haunt her is basically that before the Sailor Senshi she was extremely isolated from her peers. She didn't have any friends her own age and pretty much only studied and seemed fine but was actually terribly lonely.
Ami centric episodes really explore how that isolation and loneliness affected her and how much her friendship with the other Senshi has changed her life for the better. And while 14 year old me who was also very lonely and I did identify with Ami I also just found her quiet strength really compelling
8. Wei Wuxian - Mo Dao Zu Shi: specifically the novel WWX. I like his character because he is morally grey.
He did objectively messed up shit in canon. He also hurt people both because he thought he was doing the right thing and sometimes because he was just being a dick.
When he gets his second chance he obviously has regrets and he's honest with himself about his failures. But I also like him because he's such an unreliable narrator. I like that the novel starts with the rumours and opinions around WWX and then later his own assumptions about what the people around him think of him...and then we gradually learn how nothing we were told at the start was true. Neither the rumours about WWX nor WWX's perspective on past events
He's very complex and his story is of someone who made mistakes in his youth on top of being traumatised and having to live with the consequences of those mistakes and the aftermath of the trauma...is just super interesting. I also like that while he does have regrets and things he would do differently...not all of it. He still has his convictions and feels justified about certain choices. And that's again why I enjoy his character
7. Vetinari - Discworld: While never a main character I really enjoy Vetinari as a character. A man who runs a city state like a finely tuned machine. I love his relationship with Sam Vimes especially and the delicate balance he keeps with him. Not to mention his work with Moist Von Lipwig
I really enjoy characters who work setting the plot up behind the scenes and nudging the main characters to where they need to be for their plans. Another character in this sort of vein I enjoy is Nie Huaisang from MDZS. But Vetinari just has just such an fun vibe to him as he carries on his business
6. Pippin Took - Lord of the Rings: It took me awhile to pick my favourite LOTR character. I based this on who's story I was most excited to get back to when reading The Two Towers
And it really was Pippin. Pippin is young and reckless and for a long time doesn't fully grasp the danger of what they are doing and really doesn't get the grim reality of their situation.
Pretty much all the other characters in the fellowship are aware from the beginning that their mission will probably fail and that they could (and probably would) all die in their attempt to destroy the ring.
That doesn't stop them from trying because they know if they don't try they're definitely going to die and if the go down they are gonna go down fighting
Pippin just does not get this for a long time. Right up until the palantir and going to Minas Tirith, he thinks he's just having an adventure like Bilbo. And when he's right in the thick of it he has to do a lot of growing up very fast
I really enjoy his growth as a character and the path his character takes from kinda spoiled kid to an adult who has strong convictions. I also like that as a character he swears loyalty as a soldier and then has to break that oath in order to do the morally correct thing (save Faramir) I just really love that
5. Bakugou Katsuki - My Hero Academia: yes I know I'm a basic bitch. To be fair though I hated the little shit when I started the show.
I thought he was a 2 dimensional bully and annoying. But the little shit warmed his way into my heart. Bakugou has grown while still retaining his core personality traits. He learns to listen, to encourage those around him, and to respect Deku but all in a very Bakugou angry cat sort of way.
He has so much trauma and anger but he has been self reflecting since the beginning and making changes in a way that feels very natural and real. I have other posts on here about Bakugou and his growth as a character. But I just really like his journey and the current manga arc is kicking my ass
4. Cimorene - The Enchanted Forest Series:
Cimorene is so no nonsense and sensible. She makes choices and saves herself and helps those around her with a strength of character that is admirable
And someone so level headed and sensible could be a boring main character but instead she's someone you want to spend time around and befriend. She really doesn't put up with shit but she never lets that impact her kindness
Also she would correctly gender me and help me get the magical equivalent of HRT if I asked nicely
3. Azula - Avatar the Last Airbender:
Again they don't have to be good guys. But seriously Azula is such an interesting character. When she is the antagonist she is genuinely terrifying but then something happens that reminds you she is a child. A child whose mother made her feel monstrous and a father who groomed her to be a monster.
She is sent to arrest/kill her uncle and brother and does it with glee but also brings her brother back
Her final battle, the confrontation between her and Zuko, is a tragedy and is framed as one
Azula is a villian but she a also a child who is being pitted against her only sibling. I will never tire of her character
2. Dash X - Eerie Indiana:
He's sometimes a villian and sometimes an ally and might be an alien but is also a con man and frankly he's a scrungly rat boy and child me saw him and said "that's my gender please"
1. Geordi La Forge - Star Trek TNG: there are a lot of reasons why this character is great but honestly? Its cause he's nice to Data.
He's smart and kind and he's respectful of Data and is patient when his friend has questions that seem obvious and gently explains social cues
As a small autistic child I wanted someone to be nice to me like Geordi was to Data. So I loved Geordi. Enough to name my teddy after him.

Anyone have any ideas on how I fairy tale/fantasyify a (portable/)EEG machine? Or know anything that already has?
Specifically working in the world of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles. I might do this for my own characters in their own worlds, but i was thinking of giving Cimorene absence seizures.
I was thinking maybe the wires could be Mendanbar's magic, y'know with those invisible strings? I'm sure Telemain and Morwen could come up with something, but I'm kinda stumped.

Dealing with Demodogs
written for @steddiemicrofic's December prompt - ‘pine’ also works for today's prompt for @steddieholidaydrabbles - 'Royalty AU' wc: 508 | rated: G | cw: none | tags: pre-Steddie
“Dustin, I though you said you knew the way?” Steve could hear the unfamiliar voice carry through the pines surrounding his home.
Dustin’s voice he knew. “It’s your kingdom, Eddie, shouldn’t you know every place and resident?”
“I’m sorry, did you just suggest that anyone could know everything about the Enchanted Forest?”
Steve’s eyebrows rose, not at the realization that King Eadwine of all people was apparently searching him out, but that Dustin, usually so intelligent, would make such a basic mistake. He may not have been from here originally, but Dustin was usually more knowledgeable. In any case, he apparently had royalty approaching, so he might as well meet them at the door - if only because it made him look all knowing. Especially because Dustin hadn’t quite figured out his little trick.
He heard their arguing quiet as he put the kettle on and opened the door just before they could knock. “Come in, I’ve just started tea.” When the duo just stared at him for a moment, a small smirk found its way onto his face. “Unless I am wrong and you weren’t here to ask for my help?”
That seemed to shake both of them from their shock. “Tea sounds wonderful.” King Eadwine accepted, following him inside. He shooed two of his cats off the table so they could sit.
“So, what seems to be the problem?” He asked. “Unless the problem is Dustin, in which case I can’t help you, Your Majesty.”
“Hey!” Dustin objected, but the King grinned, clearly familiar with the younger man’s quirks.
“Please, call me Eddie.”
“Steve.”
“I wish it were as simple as Dustin’s ego, but alas, I am here to request your help on a slightly more serious matter. There have been reports of strange creatures along the Southern border. Dustin said you had helped him with something similar in the past - four legged with no eyes or fur and their head opens like a flower full of teeth?” Steve frowned, knowing exactly what Eddie was referring to.
“Demodogs. How many?” He mourned the loss of the lighter atmosphere, but shifted easily into crisis mode, already thinking about logistics.
“There have been 5 sightings, though only three seen together at a time. We can’t be completely sure, of course, but it does seem to be a fairly small group of them.” Eddie explained, before Dustin jumped in.
“Max and Lucas went ahead to get more information, but you were the one who actually dealt with them last time. And you know how we only thought there was one but it ended up being a whole pack. I don’t think the situation is the same, but better safe than sorry, right?”
Steve remembered the entire experience far too clearly. So much for an easy favor. He sighed, getting up. He waved Eddie and Dustin off. “Finish your tea. I’ll get my bat and a few other things. I’ll have to let Nancy and Robin know I’m gone as well. The sooner we leave, the sooner its done.”

Cimorene and Alianora's ongoing experiments to figure out a fireproofing spell really just cements for me that no matter what genre, if you put two sixteen year old girls with questionable social experience together for long enough they WILL inevitably start attempting witchcraft.

I get to squee about this masterpiece today and I'm THRILLED. (Left being the copy I read MANY times in Elementary School in the 90s and the right being the one I own now).
