Fujifilm XH2s Anamorphic Short Film in Cinematic 4K/6K
Had a chance to film with the Fujifilm XH2s the other day. Maguire Beck / Jack O'Lantern / Mad Jack
--
Maguire took inspiration from her cousin when she crafted her 'Jack O'Lantern' costume, but gave it her own little personal twist. Glowing ribs and a special pumpkin helmet to hide her identity really make for quite the look.
She really looked up to him, she was his biggest supporter and was the one who suggested getting Quentin the video camera to her dad. Always she wanted Quentin to have a good life and be happy, especially ever since he finally grew up and escaped his father.
Unfortunately.. Maguire didn't have the full picture of what was really going on between Mysterio and Acedia when she finally came around to see Quentin again and learned of his less than ideal and unceremonious career change.
She has good intentions and motives for doing what she has all for her cousin's sake, but.. Her methods were always a little.. extreme in how she managed to deal with those who wronged Quentin.
--
Maguire is very protective of her baby cousin, Quentin.
She is just a few years older than him, and her family lived relatively near by to his when they were little, so often they would end up playing together.
They would act out fantasy scenarios, dramatic and cinematic in their minds. She'd do this with Quentin to cheer him up, it usually worked quite well. She had the better life between the two of them.. and she always felt bad for him, having to live with her clearly awful uncle. She would beat up his bullies whenever they would meet up and play together.
She was so proud of Quentin and happy to see him going up in life and not letting what happened with his dad when he was little kill his drive for theater and movies. that was his "special interest"! his dream! so to hear he made it into the film industry was nice.. unfortunately. Maguire never heard about what came of him after that.
For Maguire to learn about the mistreatment that Quentin received and where his life has gone now? She's out for revenge. Against the film crew.. and against Acedia after she sees Acedia "attacking" her baby cousin.
--
"Aw, what? Not happy to see your favorite cousin, Quentin? I thought you'd show a little more excitement considerin' we haven't heard from each other in about 10 years and seen each other in longer. ..Is somethin' the matter? I'm just here to see my favorite baby cousin, y'know? I heard about your career and never had the time before to send my praises about making it big. I always knew you'd go places with the skills you have." -- Showing up to Quentin's apartment suddenly, meeting again after so long.
He would avoid telling her about what happened for fear she would only go out to cause trouble, seeking revenge on his behalf.. He already tried and it would do him no good if his identity had been revealed like that to those people.
"I followed Quentin's online tutorials on technology, built some things of my own.. They're nowhere near as impressive as his, but they do the jobs I want them to do just fine. However, they're a bit more.. impactful.. than his own. As much as he marveled at the fire and explosive effects in film, he never could figure a decent way of recreating it without the use of real fire. I'm not afraid, though, I LOVE IT." -- Chasing Acedia and throwing her pumpkin grenades.
personality as bold and brash and.. explosive as a time bomb, it makes sense Maguire would be fascinated with the stuff, albeit in a non-arsonist way.

RE6 Deep Lore Analysis: Prologue
Welcome to my series where I pick apart a 10+ years old game frame by frame to analyze the storytelling, cinematography, characters and of course additional Lore to fill in the gaps that either don't exist or are poorly conveyed. I'm doing this because the game is often dismissed for being convoluted and too far removed from the Resident Evil series in terms of mechanics. These things are true and it's very much an imperfect game! But the story has a lot of brilliance that goes unrecognized and I want to dive in how the whole thing works, both to new players and to those already enmeshed in the universe. To read the series in order, go here!
Tumblr media
Great shot to open the story on, a regular chrysalis thriving in an abandoned car, transforming into something new. We don't get to see anything beautiful like a moth or butterfly unfurling its wings for the first time, we see the insect, and then we cut away as disaster strikes. This obviously foreshadows the use of cocoons as enemy mechanics, and for Leon's campaign in particular, the lack of signs of surviving human life (including over the preceding establishing shots of a fiery city block filmed through the windows of the car) really set the mood.
Tumblr media
I don't know if this was the shot that spawned RE's love of 1st person intros later seen in RE3R (not counting 7 because the entire game is 1st person) but it's an impressive bit of camera work, paring down the controls of the game so the player doesn't even have a body per se to control yet, just eyes and interaction commands (the interaction commands + QTEs themselves are...a little bit of a mess gameplay-wise for sure). We don't know this is Ada or that she's actually shooting at the zombies around Leon and not at him and Helena, so there's an active threat without having to push the player into combat right away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
RE6 is excellent at transition shots, here the gun is highlighted by the helicopter and thrown into the foreground of the next shot so your brain has realigned to recognize this is the POV character seamlessly. This is like a really basic shot, I'm going to show you some CRAZY animated camera tricks later, but it's good to keep in mind that the director knows what he's doing and is doing it well. This shot, this sequence, is also a perfect encapsulation of Leon's character as described in the very first game file. Leon protects the innocent, no matter the risk. He frames Helena, big and square and determined.
Tumblr media
Helena being injured in this sequence also aids the tutorial's method of paring down the controls into something simpler, carrying her encumbers Leon, multiplayer doesn't exist yet. It also gives the player immediate stakes to worry about--someone is relying on Leon, and he cares, so the player cares too. We also first learn Helena is self-sacrificial through these extra interactions that don't get a chance to show up in the final game.
Tumblr media
The purpose of this kind of hair in character design is to make a character's eyes, and therefore emotions, harder to read (this will be significant again when we talk about Jake later btw). Leon has a lot of baggage from RC and he feels it a lot, but he plays things close to the chest and hides behind his hair. In this way, even though he's a familiar protagonist, he feels almost as mysterious as Helena at the start, giving them an instant reason to connect.
Tumblr media
RE6's answer to fixed camera angles is to still frame things cinematically rather than just for the benefit of the player. It's not a great approach to gameplay but thankfully in this one, Leon course corrects on his own and you just have to hold the buttons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The camera is alive and active through these shots as they fall onto the glass, Leon's body framing the zombies below until they're clear to see beyond the edge of the cracks, a moment of peace before they look up, and the eye follows the path that the ornate light fixture is about to follow and crush them. They're trapped in by the circle of glass and the edges of the lantern.
Tumblr media
I will say I hate the last shot of this prologue because the one that opens the game proper is essentially the same exact shot and it always throws me off, the first time I played I was like "Wait, what happened to the giant spire thing we were just standing next to, how are we in a college now". But it was an intentional choice at least to make the transition into the first chapter a lot smoother, I get that.
That's all for the prologue, I didn't want to cover this entire post in "the cinematography is so good here", but as we go through the cutscenes, be sure to keep your eyes on how the lines of the scene (such as Leon's gun and the tiles in the background of that last screencap) line up with the character's eyes to bring your attention there. Everything in the prologue is meant to build up intrigue so there's very little story and I'll talk less about cinematography going forward, but if you want a really good breakdown on what makes a good shot, I can't recommend this case study on Brad Bird's Incredibles enough. See you next time!

Behind the illusion
Don't read this if you are afraid of getting your illusion and fantasy destroyed. Read this if you want to embrace this kind of creativity and maybe help in writing stories, reports or snippets from this world.
Some people have asked how I generate this stories and the artwork. It is simple: it's a mixture of midjourney AI generated pictures and processing done in Affinity Publisher. The text are made with the help of ChatGPT after setting a lot of parameters or learning the model.
So how do I make the pictures? I have found pictures look well if you design them around the following prompt:
Tumblr media
"A Cinematic Scene from 2023, sci-fi Drama, "Resilience", close up shot, one smiling teenage male cadet in red one piece uniform with shaved head, talking on videoconference, captured by Handheld camera, film directed by Greta Gerwig, Inspiring, toom call, --style raw --ar 21:9"
Tumblr media
Midjoruney gives me this for examples and I use the upscale button to make the bigger.
Tumblr media
--ar 21:9 = defines a hight and wideness. Here I choose to make the pictures wider. If you do nothing you get 1:1 which you can well use for instagram.
The prompt should be structured like this:
Setting the scene - (closeup, panorama, bird eye,...), then the subject, then more info about the camera, film. it's also possible to go for a style. I often opt for "ODST", by "Syd Mead", or "Tron".
Tumblr media
See full instructive article: https://linusekenstam.substack.com/p/tutorial-dynamic-prompting
Also you can use the pan option:
Tumblr media
to get these by simple repeating the command:
Tumblr media
For angles use this guide
Tumblr media
Another technique I like is varying this prompt:
I got this from him:
Tumblr media
A photo from first person POV | while climbing through a street at golden hour | talking to a cadet in red body suit with shaved head | like a FPS videogame | from the angle, style of ODST --ar 16:9 --style raw --no helmet
Tumblr media
As you can see I used "style of ODST" and "ar 16:9" to have a video game like image. Not every command produces what you want and you have to settle for it sometimes or try.
How to make these into more complex Images?
I do some creative after processing. Lets show on this picture:
Tumblr media
As you can see, this is already some interactions of the base prompt. I then copy the picture into Affintiy Publisher:
Tumblr media
I then use the image adjustment tools "fx" to change the colours and thus often the moods of the images. So you can make it look like a green tinted night vision image.
Also through publisher I add text overly, the helmet POV corners, symbols, etc...
Tumblr media
Items and Mockups
From time to time its nice to have some items and mockups, sometimes in colours that they are not necessarily in real life.
Tumblr media
Here in the Accessories page I created everything, except the chastity cage by Midjourney. The prudes don't let you create these things, so for sexual stuff you have to either use things that looks like it or use other sources.
I then combine these images on a bigger DIN A4 sizes canvas, that often emphasises the meaning.
mockup of a red flightsuit uniform on white background --style raw
Tumblr media
I usually upscale and then use the picture I like best.
Examples
Tumblr media
panorama shot a group ODST paramedic cadet with helmet in red full body armour, shot on Kodak Chrome, marching on a training ground, in the style of double exposure, red and green, mixed race , male --style raw --ar 16:9
Tumblr media
a young men with a shaved head trying on some red ODST body armour, workshop, captured by Handheld camera, mixed race; image split into 4, shot from different angle, bright colours --style raw
Angles
Futuristic Filmschool Portrait, young cadet with shaved head in red flightsuit uniform, standing in front of a grey wall, Detailed Face, Minimal Composition, Simplicity, Awardwinning Muted Colors --ar 9:16 --seed 5000
Tumblr media
Text
Text and story is an entirely different thing. I use chat GPT after i gave it some basic instructions, biggest problem was to let it write about mind control and chastity without disapproval. I still don't remember how I made it do that.

The World Is Not Enough (N64)
Original Release: 2000
Developer: Eurocom
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Platform: Nintendo 64
Tumblr media
While Tomorrow Never Dies skipped out on the Nintendo 64, The World Is Not Enough made a return, developed completely separately from the PlayStation version of the game. The N64 version of TWINE is heavily inspired by GoldenEye, following the same style of missions and level structure, but also tries to make the game more cinematic.
Eurocom managed to fit a lot onto the N64 controller. Jumping is now an option, and crouch is just one button. Through button combinations, you can switch between items and gadgets separately, as well as activate alternative fire modes for the guns. Looking up and down is a bit awkward as you either have to hold down the aim button, or use the D-pad (which is a little bit out of the way on an N64 controller) – but this means that it’s quite easy to reconfigure the game to fit a dual analogue controller.
Tumblr media
Starting off with a nice simple tutorial level in a bank, this serves as a good introduction of the game’s mechanics, using gadgets and (on harder difficulties) erasing camera footage – this had a few extra objectives for harder difficulties, just like GoldenEye.
The cutscenes in this have voice overs (but not the actors from the films) and are recreated in the game engine, with the story being rewritten so that the game itself makes sense without having to have seen the film. I much prefer this way of doing things, as it helps keep the game’s identity throughout the whole thing.
Tumblr media
Back at MI6 headquarters, not only does a bomb go off, but it gets invaded by goons, you have to fight them off, as well as putting out fires, protecting staff and enabling the security systems. It’s a really fun level, and is a great example of how the game expands upon scenes of the film.
After the boat chase (which you don’t get to play), you chase the assassin through docks along the Themes, a straightforward level that introduces the grapple function of the watch, which can be used in certain spaces to climb upwards, adding some verticality to some levels.
Tumblr media
Taking advantage of the London setting, the assassin then proceeds into the Underground, having her goons take hostages and setting up a Bomb to try to slow Bond down. The trains are a bit crazy as you have to dodge them, but it’s very enjoyable, and you have to reach the assassin’s hot air balloon before she escapes.
The levels in The World Is Not Enough to a good job of feeling alive and like real locations. I would have liked a few that are less linear, but they’re still enjoyable.
Tumblr media
Next up is a skiing mission, which is done in quite a simple way, feeling a bit like a light gun shooter. You can move left/right a bit and can speed up and slow down. There are a few targets that you need to hit, which can be a bit difficult and require restating the mission, which can be a bit annoying.
Tumblr media
Next up is the main stealth mission – in most other missions, stealth is optional, but works quite well. Your watch has a “stun” function which, really, is utterly useless – it just makes enemies wiggle and it stops right after you stop firing it at them. Luckily, your watch has a dart which does knock enemies out – or you can punch them to sleep.
Here, you sneak around the grounds of Elektra’s house (and a little bit inside), tapping phones and taking photos of evidence. There are are few villains you need to avoid completely. I remember as a kid taking ages on this level, but once you have the guard patterns down, it isn’t too difficult.
Tumblr media
The following two levels are probably the weakest, but still not bad. One has you chasing after a henchman to replace him, you can be stealthy or as loud as you want (just be prepared for a lot of enemies). Then you try to stop Renard from stealing a bomb, meeting up with Christmas Jones and escaping from an explosion.
Tumblr media
The “cities of walkways” mission is split into two levels. The first is a fairly typical level as you fight some enemies to reach a computer containing evidence, while the second has you dodging helicopters with buzzsaws and is a great level, as you jump around on platforms that are being sliced then grab a fancy rocket launcher and guide missiles into an attacking chopper.
A few more decent levels follow as you chase a traitor though Istanbul, then you get captured and have to rescue M and kill Elektra, then it’s on to infiltrating Renard’s submarine. You start off on the docks and have to kill the guards efficiently enough to avoid them setting off the alarm. Then you climb into the submarine – with no loading screen, which I thought was impressive when the game came out in order to rescue Dr. Jones and disable the submarine controls.
Tumblr media
The final level has a lot of swimming as you navigate the damaged submarine. The controls take some time to get used to, but it’s not so bad once you do – although as you had limited time in this mission, I think the game could have done with some swimming in an earlier mission.
You need to navigate through the submarine, kill Renard (which is similar to the film, they don’t force a boss encounter) and then escape, finishing the game.
The N64 version also has a multiplayer mode which is a lot of fun, complete with bots (although, strangely, you can’t play against bots on your own without cheats). Beating the main game on higher difficulties will unlock more characters to play as.
While it doesn’t reach the heights of GoldenEye, The World Is Not Enough is an extremely solid game and is a ton of fun.

David O'Reily used many different things to earn the Golden Bear Award. In order to win it, he wanted to prove something totally artificial and unreal, and to communicate emotion and hold cinematic truth. He says that the key to aesthetics is coherence. He used all the elements and tied them together under a set of rules. He knows animation is long and hard to learn, so he shorted his production to make it easier and faster to finish to a bare minimum. He used simple geometry to describe his world, such as using flat shading, as he didn't use any light sources in his film or any realistic shadows.
-My style I want to use is Simpsons style or 2D style. I like the way it looked when I saw a tutorial about it so I want to use this and try and practice a bit more til I get it right. I used a few pictures I drew on Adobe Illustrator and opened them on Blender. I then used freestyle to get lines around the models to emulate a drawing. I also followed the tutorial on Youtube but it wasn't working well for me to completely put outlines on everything so I just used the Knife tool from the video then the Freestyle for everything else. I used nodes to color each part of the faces on the models to get the results that I got from rendering.

Part 0 - BEAR BROS PLAY MOTHER 3
GRIZZ'S ROOM - NIGHT
GRIZZ, PANDA and ICE BEAR stand by at the desk. Grizz is in the middle, manning the laptop. The screen displays the message from the fan-translation team of the game MOTHER 3 (2006).
Tumblr media
GRIZZ Oh man, this is so exciting! We've never followed a game together in like so long.
PANDA Oh yeah! Oh, did you know this game isn't even available in America? How'd you even get this, li'l bro??
ICE Panda is not ready for that information.
PANDA Aw what?
GRIZZ Now as usual, I'm taking player one.
PANDA Dude, it's a single player game. We gotta take turns.
GRIZZ Whatever, I'm going first--
ICE *Shh* Ice Bear wants to concentrate on reading the text...
Silence.
PANDA You done yet?
GRIZZ C'mon, patience man!
PANDA Since when did you know anything about patience?
ICE Done. Let's go.
Tumblr media
GRIZZ OH, OH, we can name the characters! Sweet!
PANDA "The younger twin brother. A gentle boy."
GRIZZ There's brothers? Hey, let's name them after us. That'd be so fun.
ICE Ice Bear only saw two brothers in the family picture.
Tumblr media
GRIZZ Well, that's a bummer.
ICE Ice Bear also remembers seeing a dog in the family picture. He volunteers to be the dog.
PANDA Oh okay! I guess I'm this little guy, then.
Keyboard tapping from Panda.
GRIZZ Just "Panda"? Man, that's boring! "Pan-pan" is way better.
Keyboard tapping from Grizz.
GRIZZ There we go!
PANDA Alright, then that other kid should be you, then.
Keyboard tapping from Grizz.
Tumblr media
PANDA Oh, we have a dad here. Any of you remember your dads' names?
GRIZZ Nah...
Ice Bear shakes his head.
GRIZZ Man, let's st pick "Don't care"
Keyboard tapping from Grizz.
GRIZZ And for our mom, too.
Keyboard tapping from Grizz.
PANDA That's some sweet names - Flint and Hinawa~ Aw...
ICE Look, the dog. "Brave and smart", just like Ice Bear.
Keyboard tapping from Ice Bear.
Tumblr media
PANDA And our dream family is DONE! ... Huh? Favourite homemade food?
GRIZZ Lil Bro, your call!
ICE Ice Bear doesn't know. Randomly picked: "stir fry"
GRIZZ Thanks, bro!
Keyboard tapping from Grizz
GRIZZ Ah, the "favourite thing". Boys, it's time to discuss. Whose favourite thing is it? Or is it something we all like?
PANDA Hm... We've gotta make it meaningful. Something that's dear to our hearts. Oh! I know!
ICE Ice Bear recommends Panda doesn't look at himself for inspiration.
PANDA Aw come on, man!
Keyboard tapping from Grizz.
GRIZZ Done!
[I have no screenshot for what he wrote. It will be a surprise for later]
PANDA/ICE Huh?
GRIZZ Oh yeah.
PANDA Grizz, are you serious? (In amusement) What the heck is that?!
GRIZZ Come on, it'll be funny!
ICE Ice Bear approves.
PANDA Oh, fine, fine.
Keyboard tapping from Grizz.
GRIZZ Ju-ust doing some final set-ups, and... voila!
ICE "OK desu ka"
Tumblr media
PANDA Welcome to the world of Mother 3...
Tumblr media
GRIZZ Oh man, this music's AWESOME
ICE *Shh* Ice Bear wants to see the cinematic.
The cinematic continues.
Scene 1, tutorial at Alec's house.
Tumblr media
GRIZZ Already so much in character! The number of times I had to get you up in the mornings like that is insane.
PANDA Shut up, man! As if venting your frustrations in your Crobar Jones films wasn't enough!
GRIZZ Don't be so embarrassed, baby bro, it's just us.
Tumblr media
PANDA OMG... Our mom's so sweet! Reminding us to look handsome before we go out, making our favourite food, I almost wish she were real.
Tumblr media
ICE Look for the dog.
GRIZZ Okay! ... Just farm animals, huh. Darn.
ICE Ice Bear is still optimistic.
GRIZZ Now, that's the spirit.
Tumblr media
GRIZZ We're fighting dragons! That's awesome!
PANDA But they look so cute~
Tumblr media
GRIZZ AW WHAT? It's turn based?
PANDA You don't like that?
GRIZZ Just not my style. You take over!
PANDA Okay, ...Man, you just need to learn to appreciate it.
ICE Ice Bear enjoys reading the text.
Tumblr media
PANDA Aw.. I love our mom. That letter was so sweet...
He sniffles.
GRIZZ Bro, are you crying?
PANDA It just felt too real, especially the way she was talking about us...
GRIZZ Huh. ...Now I wish that were real, too.
ICE Ice Bear brought the tissues.
Panda blows his nose. Grizz, and eventually Ice Bear, grab a tissue, too.
PANDA Oh man, I'm so excited for the rest of this game. It seems so wholesome!

#AFTER EFFECTS MAGIC BULLET LOOKS HOW TO#
I have seen it being used a lot in commercial work and for the price I think it’s definitely worth it What Are Your Favourite Plugins? I’ve been using it a fair bit and I find it very useful to add intensity to all sorts of lighting, laser, fire or explosion effects. As an example, I have used them for Walter’s laser vision effect in my YouTube trailer video. Optical Flares is a plugin that allows you to create great looking lens flare effects and comes with a large amount of presets that you can simply add to your scene and animate to your liking. It is not a ‘particle system’ and so can’t use it to spawn any new particles, but with some clever tricks you can use it for all sorts of cool visual effects! Video Copilot Optical FlaresĪnother great plugin from Video Copilot that I enjoy using is Optical Flares. This used to be a bigger deal before After Effects CC added Cinema 4D Lite and the Cineware plugin, but it’s still a great tool to easily get some 3D elements into your scene and animate them.ĮLement 3D is actually a Particle Replicator and so it allows quick and easy setup and distribution of a large number of 3D ‘particles’ in your scene as well as animating them.
#AFTER EFFECTS MAGIC BULLET LOOKS HOW TO#
I have a full tutorial on how to easily create great looking 3D Integration VFX using the Video Copilot Element 3D plugin.Įlement 3D is a plugin that allows you to add 3D elements into your scene directly inside of After Effects. The plugin is simple to use and won’t break the bank. Twitch is a plugin that I’ve used a lot, from my Zombie Hunter Halloween VFX Short Film to the logo for Surfaced Studio. It allows you to distort colours, lighting or playback speed with a few simple clicks and animate flickering. Video Copilot Twitch allows you to easily create chaos effects for your videos. Video Copilot After Effects Pluginsīesides creating amazing After Effects tutorials, Video Copilot also has a large number of high quality plugins available for Adobe After Effects that I enjoy using. You simply apply the plugin to your clip and then you can select from a large set of existing colouring options and tweak them or built your own colour effect using a myriad of inbuilt processing steps. Magic Bullet Looks is the simplest tool I have ever seen to achieve cinematic looks with a few simple clicks. Out of the Suite, the one plugin I’ve been using the most is Magic Bullet Looks. This suite includes a great set of tools for correcting any colour issues with your footage and achieving a cinematic look. The Magic Bullet Suite has recently been split up into a few separate suites and the one that I would choose is the Color Suite. While Adobe Premiere and After Effects contain a lot of built in tools to help you take charge of the colour of your footage, one plugin collection I have learnt to love is the Red Giant Magic Bullet Suite. Magic Bullet Suits & Magic Bullet LooksĪlmost without exception, all videos I have upload to YouTube have been colour corrected and colour graded to some extent. It is very easy to use and I recently made a tutorial for it showing you how to create cool Fireworks effects using Trapcode Particular. Trapcode Particular offers many advanced particle controls like detailed particle property animations, physics an auxiliary system to spawn child particles and advanced shading. While After Effects comes with the built in CC Particle World effect, I did find it limiting at times. I use them for explosions, dissolves, laser beams, destruction and all sorts of other detailed effects. I love to create particle effects in Adobe After Effects. These are my personal favourite Red Giant plugins for After Effects and Premiere. Red Giant has some of the best products out there and you should definitely check out their website. This is my personal favourites list and you should keep that in mind when looking at these plugins and evaluate whether they would be useful to your own film projects and visual effects. I have been creating visual effects with Adobe After Effects for a while now and over the years have gathered a number of plugins that I love to use.
