Generation Loss Episode Three was Scripted, a short analytical commentary
I don't think Ranboo was entirely in control in episode 3 like we're lead to believe.
I’m obsessed with the set up of “episode three was also scripted by showfall”. Episode one follows a clear plot, there's a few glitches but for the most part you get the vibe that this is what a showfall show usually is. The second episode has more glitches, giving the audience more chances to see “the real gl!Ranboo” and his reactions to the Horrors, before being shoved deeper into the mind control and turning into an NPC in those last bits from the museum onwards. It ends with Hetch breaking through the show and releasing gl!Ranboo. Not completely though, but the audience wouldn’t know that. We are taught to assume from the glitches that when the mask lights are off or flashing, gl!Ranboo is (mostly) in control. So why would we question that now? The lights aren’t even flashing, they’re off. They have a genuine reaction that anyone would have after suddenly becoming aware of themselves in a giant mall. But gl!Ranboo was still under control. Showfall seems to typically control people with accessories, and while that's not always true, the mask is still on him, lights or no lights.
(i'm putting the rest under the cut because this is over 1000 words and I don't want to be a menace to my mutuals who don't follow genloss)
Ranboo stated that every choice gl!Ranboo makes in the finale was the wrong choice. Saving gl!Charlie, steering gl!Charlie away from the axe, trusting Hetch, choosing the wrong code, walking to the wrong exit, the list goes on.
Charlie has been in every episode. There are theories of him being “Showfalls Favourite”, maybe this is true, or maybe he’s a fan favourite? Maybe the show was set up for Ranboo to find him, and feel compelled to release him from the mind control. Having someone with the main character also prompts dialogue, which we wouldn’t have gotten if Ranboo was by themselves.
The fateful words “can you run with that?” causes multiple problems for these characters when Ranboo steers Charlie away from the axe. If he had it, they would have gotten out. To me, the most logical explanation is that Showfall could not allow them to escape before Hetch’s grand plan was executed. On one hand, why couldn’t they just have Charlie not pick it up in the first place? Maybe they did actually release Charlie from being mind controlled (but not Ranboo) so his reactions felt real. Why have the axe in the room at all? I don’t have a good explanation for that. But Ranboo saw the TV monster/security, he saw what it did to the employee and Sneeg, why would you risk not having an axe, even if you thought it might slow you down a bit?
After Hetch “died”, he gave instructions to the button. The ratio turns to cinematic. The cameras are no longer being controlled by drones, it’s like a movie. The camera men are no longer acknowledged. Ranboo goes into an almost trance, stabbing the first employee he sees. While I recall Ranboo mentioning that gl!Ranboo was angry at everything and wanted to avenge his friend (or something along those lines), the cinematography from the view’s POV, and just the ‘trace’ full stop feels like a driving point to the plot. This also brings me to the wires that bleed from the employee. I believe that gl!Ranboo’s actions have been influenced by Showfall up until Hetch’s scene, but it was still Ranboo. Now, as the ratio changes, Showfall are back in control. Their filter is back up. The employee we see mauled by security earlier was bleeding, the one Ranboo stabs is wires. I do enjoy the theory that employees who try to escape or try to help cast members escape are killed and filled with wires, as well as the theory that the longer they work for Showfall, the less human they become. It could be any one of these theories, but its definitely important due to the emphasis put on it.
Charlie’s last moments were spent trying to get Ranboo out, the man was getting gutted and torn to shreds, possibly having wires shoved inside him, and he manages to find the strength to stop screaming in pain and point towards the button. I may be reading into this too much, it's a very plausible scene and it does fall inline with the famous last words trope. I may be reading into all of it too much, as many of these elements could just be creative choices with no real plot behind them, particularly the ratio change.
Another thing I’ve thought of while writing this, security seems to hang around after its killed.
We see it over Sneeg’s body, however it must have been there for a while. Ranboo and Charlie were out in the open in the mall, not too far away, surely Sneeg’s screams would have echoed throughout the space, suggesting that he died before they were close enough for them to hear it. Security was also hovering over Charlie, while the other employees were chasing after Ranboo, which you would assume was security’s job. Both of these scenes goes back to that theory of security (re)wiring and reprogramming the employees and cast members. This brings me hope that Charlie and Sneeg aren’t dead, just reprogrammed. But then this goes back to my other post about Ranboo saving Charlie was the reason he died, and the parallel between Ranboo’s choice and the audience's final choice. What's the better outcome? Becoming/remaining a cast member with Showfall Media for as long as they want you to entertain for them, living under mind control for entire lifetimes, or death, right here, right now. The audience, and Ranboo, decided the latter was a better fate.
As of the last scene with the box, I'm not sure if thats gl!Ranboo in total control or not. According to Ranboo, it is, and Showfall are even putting his memories back. It would make sense he was in control, maybe Showfall were just lucky their 'hero' had so much emotion behind him.
To summarise, there are many details that indicate gl!Ranboo was not in total control in episode three like we are led to believe. We are trusting Hetch just as Ranboo did, and look where that got them.
feel free to add to this in replies, reblogs, tags, whatever! I'd love to hear your thoughts, whether you agree with me or not

Hi! I'm looking to explore more punk artists who write about disability (of any kind really) and/or chronic illness, would you happen to have any recommendations for that? Thanks!
hi! i didn't have a concrete list, really, so i did a bit of digging and here's a couple albums & blurbs! it's not actually very punk-centric (more experimental than anything) my apologies. i haven't listened to all of these fully, but the stuff that i've heard has been lovely!
grim bitch/sick shit — collander: experimental/electronic bedroom pop. "a peek into a few weeks of low-spoons electronic production, demo tracks demo bodies." alli yates, the singer behind collander, is also "member of Sins Invalid, a performance collective for artists with disabilities, and is a prominent disability rights activist within Oakland’s underground scene" (bandcamp daily)
187bpm_demo — wheelchair sports camp: experimental funk/hip-hop. "We would like to offer this song of rage, anger, and grief to the ongoing fight for liberation. For those on the frontlines of today's uprising and for the generations of movements before that paved the way, taught us how, and who gave their all for us to be here." i found them through kr/p-hop nation's network, whose website is sadly defunct but the founder's twitter (leroy f moore jr) is still up!
sicko — beast nest: experimental/electronic noise. "And when I personally think about liberation, I think about what it means to get to a place where you are able to be present and really live with that presence. I think about what oppression functions as, what abolition is about, what disability justice is about" (bandcamp daily). sharmi basu (of beast nest!) is one of the people behind ratskin records, a label based in oakland, ca dedicated to "decolonial experimental music centered in the Bay Area and beyond". i've heard some of beast nest's stuff before and it is stellar, definitely recommend if ur interested in brown noise.
the runner — boy harsher: coldwave/drone. "Last year, in the midst of the obvious chaos, but additionally with Matthews’ MS diagnosis, Muller started working on moody, cinematic sketches. It was uncertain what these pieces would become other than catharsis — the duo were unable to tour and making “club music” did not feel right." this one i had saved from a rec post i'd seen somewhere on here, but i hadn't had a chance to listen till now. this is the soundtrack to their short horror film of the same name!
split 12 — chronic anxiety / dialer: post-punk noise/harsh electronic punk. "the album is six slices of pure post punk-noise rock wrapped in a silk swaddle of self-assertion and anxiety." this one's actually a vinyl split between 2 bands but i figured it would be a fun add! this one's a joint release between Bunny Cat Records (Great Weights, Love Club, Impressionist) and SRA Records (FOD, Dead Milkmen, HIRS, Psychic Teens) and their noise is so so cool.
https://synthfreq.bandcamp.com/album/vol-1
the enigma of heaven and other daily delusions — heaven pierce her: electronic/experimental breakcore. "An exploration of christianity, mundane divinity and paranoid schizophrenia in the information age." i'm originally familiar with hakita's work via ultrakill, but this album actually means so much to me for a lot of different reasons. shan't get into it here, hope you enjoy it.
the flesh of the world — uboa: dark ambient/harsh noise. "These four songs were done under quarantine and are about bodies, body dysmorphia and the schizophrenic dissolution of the boundary between self and other" ; i love uboa's work and this album is genuinely fantastic.
i'm not 100% sure if these completely qualify, but the following punk bands are extremely vocal about their support for marginalized groups (and discuss mental illness / disability here and there in their work): hirs collective, blkvapor, the muslims, soul glo, pulses., pinkshift, S.B.S.M., and G.L.O.S.S. ^_^ if anybody else has any recommendations, please feel free to add on! this list is by no means exhaustive, it's literally what i found after a couple weeks of sitting on this ask. i would love love love any recs; they would be much appreciated.
all albums linked are through bandcamp! obligatory mention that bandcamp staff are currently unionizing: check out bandcamp united's linktree for a ton of resources to support them, including email templates to the co-founder expressing your support for the union. on bandcamp fridays, the first friday of every month, all proceeds from sales will go directly to artists & bandcamp will not take any fees. <3

Heyyo! I just finished watching all the available episodes of Murder Drones
And i love it!!!
Yeah this show has been on my radar see it in a lot of articles and posts about independent animation and a certain mutual here who constantly reblogs posts who i shall not name (Hey Lexi!) and so i decided to watch it and this series is amazing!
The animation is so good! Like it's giving video game cinematic vibes and i am here for it.
The tone of the show is so unique it's this horror and comedy that honestly is not for everyone but lucky for me i have a sick twisted sense of humor. Also the horror show in this is so good like it gets the creepy and suspenseful mood and i am surprised by how good the gore and body horror with it being robots and all and i love that the comedy is self-referential with the characters constantly pointing out tropes and clichés it's my kind of meta humor and it gives me this vibe that they are trying to awkwardly mimic humans.
Characters are all great, like them all, Uzi is a great protagonist love how angsty and edgy she is but my favorite has to be N i love him, he is a murderous golden retriever and he is best boi and my blorbo of this show.
And yeah i really liked i will definitely watch the new episodes when they come out and i highly recommend you watch this of you havent and i will see you real soon bye!

What if a reaper messed up big time with a cinematic record and an adult was turned into a baby? Baby Ciel and a stressed Sebastian? A confused baby Agni swimming in robes many sizes too big? A BABY FOR GRELLE'S VERY OWN?
Hi, anon! Going off the canon lore we have now, I’m not sure that such a phenomenon is possible? Keep in mind that cinematic records are essentially a reel of the memories accumulated over a person’s lifetime. Undertaker demonstrated that they can be tampered with to achieve a false continuation of life (i.e. his addition of bogus records after a person’s natural demise tricks their body into becoming ambulatory in the absence of a soul). Such meddling can lead to behavioral side effects: For example, since they lacked a spirit, the bizarre dolls on the Campania attacked passengers in a futile effort to claim their souls and “settle the balance of the never-ending cinematic record.” However, I don’t recall any evidence from the manga which suggests that the act of interfering with cinematic records could lead to the drastic physical changes you described.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Instead, I propose that major alterations to cinematic records could be used as a form of mind control. Perhaps Kuro’s mysterious “higher-ups” have a protocol for excising rebellious memories from reapers who defy the status quo and splicing in artificial ones to ensure that the troublesome death god returns to being a complacent, unquestioning drone. Or, if a person’s recollections of adolescence and adulthood were snipped off the original cinematic record, a reaper might be able to induce mental age regression in their victim, even while that individual’s body was left unaffected. Now there’s fodder for some intense psychological horror…
TL; DR: To the best of my knowledge, changes to a person’s cinematic records alone would not roll back their biological clock, even if there were psychological effects.

THE BRIDGE CURSE : RITUAL (2023)
Tumblr media
The Bridge Curse: Ritual (2023) - Review: Hold On Tight, But Maybe Not Too Tightly
Movie: The Bridge Curse: Ritual (2023) Genre: Horror Year: 2023 Country: Taiwan
Plot Twisting Tale, But Does It Stick the Landing?
Imagine: a haunted university, augmented reality ghosts, and a ritual gone horribly wrong. That's the chilling brew of "The Bridge Curse: Ritual," where tech-savvy students unleash vengeful spirits with terrifying consequences. It's a creepy good time, but buckle up because the plot takes some sharp turns, not all of them smooth.
Acting: Not All Heroes Wear Ghost-Busting Gear
The main cast deserves a standing ovation. They bring their A-game, conveying fear, desperation, and even a dash of humor (when the situation allows, of course). However, some supporting actors stumble through their lines, their wooden performances breaking the immersive spell.
Cinematography: Hauntingly Beautiful
This movie has more chills than a freezer convention. The camerawork is top-notch, especially the opening drone shot that sets the spooky scene. Add in creepy settings, masterful music, and sound effects that'll make you jump out of your skin, and you've got a recipe for cinematic dread.
My Two Cents: Worth a Spooky Night In?
Here's the deal: the good outweighs the not-so-good. The main cast shines, the visuals are chilling, and the scares are plentiful. However, the story gets a bit muddled near the end, leaving you scratching your head more than screaming in terror. The predictable conclusion doesn't help either. A solid horror flick, but not a genre-defining masterpiece.
3 out of 5 star
What the World Thinks:
Critics were divided. Some praised the originality of the AR twist and the effective scares, while others found the plot confusing and the characters underdeveloped. Still, it garnered decent box office returns, earning almost three times its budget.
Bonus Trivia:
Did you know the film's original title was "The Female Ghost Bridge 2: The Grudge Building"? Sounds much scarier, right?
The creepy university building is actually a real abandoned school in Taiwan. Talk about spooky location scouting!
Director Lester Shih originally envisioned a trilogy, but due to mixed reviews, the future of the franchise remains uncertain.
So, should you watch it? If you're looking for a good scare and appreciate solid acting and cinematography, then go for it! Just be prepared for a plot that might leave you wanting more. Who knows, maybe you'll find the ending more satisfying than others. Remember, horror is subjective, so dive in and decide for yourself!

Project Idea - Project proposal
Rationale -
Throughout all of my previous projects, I have majorly missed out on a vital component for working in a game studio. Working as a team could allow game ideas to be made quicker and easier, and to a far higher quality than before. This is one of the thing that I majorly missed out on for our last couple project, but will be using for this project. To aid my group in the production of the game, I decided to move back to blueprint. This will cause a slight handicap to myself, but will allow my team members to be able to edit or implement their own code onto it. I originally had the idea for this academic year to create all my projects inside of C++, however this had to change to better aid in the production of my game. When coming up with game ideas for this project, I needed to keep into consideration my other team members career path and therefore make sure that their main focus can be added to the game. For that reason, I thought the best idea to out forwards in a group meeting would be a zombie survival game as most of them are focused on cinematics as well as the code. I will be taking heavy inspiration from a game called Slenderman for its aesthetics and gameplay for this project. Slenderman is a "multiplayer" survival horror game where the player must go around the map to find clues and to turn on generators to escape.
Project Concept -
For my groups project, we have discussed in a group meeting to create a game based off the covid pandemic during 2020. The game will include zombies and objects for the player to find, which in return will allow cinematica to be used alot better. For this project, we will be using unreal engine 5.3 due to its native support for metahumans and as its what my team members and myself know how to use. Our main idea for this project was to have 2 characters that both have specific tasks that they have to complete to win the game. One character will be stuck in a field of zombies and the other will be stuck in a tower. The player in the tower Will need to put in codes that the player in the forest finds to progress to the next island to win. The player in the tower also has a live map as well as a drone to watch the player and lure the zombies away. I plan on using noise events and mic control to make the game more immersive and interactive for the player. This makes it so that if the player speaks then depending on how loud and close the zombie is, it would cause them to run after the player.

Black to Comm — At Zeenath Parallel Heavens (Thrill Jockey)
Tumblr media
Marc Richter’s music blurs familiar sounds with abstract sonorities. As Black to Comm, he weaves his own instrumental playing with samples and loops, often winding them so tightly together that its impossible to pick out which is which. At Zeenath Parallel Heavens, his fourth release for Thrill Jockey, amplifies this alchemical method and pushes it into the realm of moody, bombastic post rock.
Richter compares his sound-making process to the spate of artificial intelligence algorithms hovering around the internet, disguising themselves as creative entities. When the AI is overloaded, it outputs made up results. It’s these algorithmic glitches to which Richter feels a sort of kinship. He overloads his own mind with a plethora of diverse sonic material, recontextualizing it into phantasmagoric sound worlds. The resulting music explodes with cinematic flair while being surprisingly listenable.
Desiring to startle his listeners out of a theoretical stupor, the artist unleashes the torrent “Then Began the Harp to Fashion.” It’s a tumbling array of strings, drums, and cymbals, scrabbling to release itself from a dense thicket of the uncanny. Rhythms crash into each other, as they seek to resolve. This track wouldn’t be out of place on Tarentel’s The Order of Things. Richter understands that changing up moods is key to a good narrative, so he follows up with the sanguine “Steep Thy Plumage in His Sweetness.” A small choir of synthetic, autotuned voices sings from an extraterrestrial hymnal, their croon nestled within a blanket of strings.
A bleak wind rattles the bones of “Never Heed the Tongues of Wooers,” giving rise to sinister caterwauling. Richter plays with horror movie tropes, creating a heightened atmosphere with this crepuscular motif before unfurling an angelic synth chord, lightening the mood. This hopeful temperament bleeds into “Time Will Fly on Equal Pinions.” The robotic choir reappears, buffeted by gusty drones; it’s over far too soon.
Richter leads his audience through nearly every emotional state, as At Zeenath Parallel Heavens is the musical equivalent of a blockbuster film. Breaking from Hollywood’s traditional three act structure, he holds us captive across eight distinct movements. We experience fear, pleasure, revulsion, sadness, and revelry. Emotions unique to humans. Richter’s obsession with AI is therefore moot: humanity bleeds into every second of this album. Whether he knows it or not, he’s flipped the script. Instead of trying to emulate himself with soulless computer code, he has emulated artificial intelligence itself.

Emotional Impact In Games
The soundtracks in game vary immensely from genre to genre, as the soundtrack arguably making or breaking the experiences for most games. Horror games will have different soundtracks to platformers, and in this example I will be comparing the horror game Lethal Company's soundtrack to Hitman 3 and Celeste's soundtrack.
Lethal Company
The soundtrack of Lethal Company while on the surface is desolate, intended to make sure you feel like you're all along on whatever moon you're on, especially the later moons with much harsher weather. Inside of the facility there's no music, just the occasional sound of a light or pipes moving. This ambience intends to isolate the player even more as well as set the environment out to be unfriendly and hostile. Comparing it to the other two games, the joyful and hopeful music of Celeste will be immensely out of place in any situation in Lethal Company, it would immediately ruin the eeriness of the game. Hitman 3's more intense soundtrack would fit better than Celeste's but wouldnt fit too well, as each map has their own soundtrack that usually sounds fairly tense, but as Hitman is a stealth game this would not work in a horror game.

Cognitive Processing in Games
The main form of cognitive processing is making items emit sounds to draw players to them, this can sometimes be obvious, like in the forms of "drops" in Call Of Duty Zombies or chests in Fortnite. Although these are fairly simple, they're very effective at directing players towards these locations. There is another type of sound for cognitive processing that isn't very documented, this is an underlying low tone towards items that can be picked up, these tones sub-consciously direct players towards those items by getting louder the closer the player is. The player will usually seek out these items to get them, with the sound stopping as a partial "reward" for the player finding the item. An example of this is the teddy bears around maps in Call Of Duty Zombies, these emit a high pitched droning sound, and it stops when the player interacts with it. (I would record some gameplay but the COD is blocked from launching on college computers and I can't find this sound online anywhere)
Sound Influence on Player Behaviour
Sounds in games will influence players immensely depending on the context, tense music while trespassing in Hitman 3, for example will increase the tension and awareness of the player, heightening the "risky" feeling of going into these areas while providing a sense of relief when the player goes back into an unrestricted zone. Going back to the chest sounds in Fortnite, these sounds trigger players to immediately drop whatever they're doing to run towards the chest for the chance of extra loot, even if they're already fairly set. They also cause players to fight over these chests.
Cross-Cultural Sound Design:
In "Super Mario 64," the Japanese and American versions offer different player experiences through subtle sound design changes. Japanese releases playful and culturally resonant music, while American versions opt for cinematic and immersive soundtracks. These adjustments cater to cultural preferences, giving players distinct atmospheres in the same game.
Game Soundscapes and Player Experience
In "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim," the game uses atmospheric soundscapes to make its world feel believable and captivating. The sound design dynamically adapts to the player's actions, environment, and weather conditions, creating a responsive and immersive experience. The weather system influences sound, with rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall having distinct audio cues.

Notes from research on showreels
I was looking up tips for creating a showreel - specifically one for sound - so compiled some of the stuff I found. The first source had a lot of SD tips as well, so I included them.
Here's all my notes and sources on what I read!
6 Tips For Creating Your First Sound Design Showreel: | A Sound Effect
[mostly for game design but still useful cause doing design for games would be a shout]
Start with a Stereo bed for all generic "base" things (room tone, wind, general ambience) than add SFX in mono for stuff that makes noise - and automate that to camera position
Unique soundscape and ambience for each different camera position
(more for games) Little things matter when doing foley, beef it up - when cloth moves it should move, zippers, bodyfalls and impacts can always be bigger than you think. Each chara has different outfit, therefore have fun with deciding how that outfit sounds when it moves
Make stereo SFX mono : When things in distance sound too 'wide' due to source mats, and therefore doesn't sound like its positioned correctly, make things mono.
Related to above - if source sounds too stereo but needs to sound wide, convert source SFX to mono and add stereo reverb + widening plugins (Valhalla Supermassive and iZotope Ozone Imager are free recommendations)
For redesigns, replace what music is doing in the scene with cinematic SFX (i.e: for a horror scene, add "metal hits, drones, and risers to emphasise all of the key story beats")
Short and snappy showreels for the win - around a minute is his rec, with 15 sec clips and 5 sec filler if needed
don't start it with 5 second of silence - add a little sound effect to start/end titles!
Build the perfect showreel: 10 top tips | Creative Bloq
[tips for first showreel build - mostly for animation but still has relevant tips]
Cut Ruthlessly - only your best work
Keep it short - 1 to 1.5 minutes in length - studios look at a lot of reels
Start and End well - begin and end the reel with your best work, specifically ending with your second best piece and starting with the first. But keep in mind that the rest should still be decent work
Think of showreel as an ad; which aren't usually more than 30 seconds long. You are selling something.
(More for animation) match your reel to the studio! for instance, don't put in Orc models if a studio does architecture visualization.
(more for animation) Indicate what you created - in student films often its group work, so be clear in what you contributed
(Animation but could be relevant to film portfolio) Show inner workings: Shot breakdowns, software used
Better to go for simple and well done than complex and mid
related- Technique beats individuality (might be more for animation, but could apply to film)
Be a Sound Designer - Episode #1 - Building a killer showreel - sounDesign
[Tips and examples of reels - relevant to first reels]
Should flow well - avoid choppy fade ins and outs
using existing footage of a film trailer, animation, etc and doing a redesign is alright for an entry level position if you have no other work - Make sure to credit properly
2 minutes is borderline too much. keep it around 1 minute with a snappy edit
Put your reel in your linkedin profile
MY THOUGHTS/IDEAS
once I get a rough idea of what to put into it, going into AE and/or Blender and mocking up some transitions and short filler to design to in order to transition from clip to clip could be a good idea
movies - Whats the best way of presenting a sound design showreel ? - Sound Design Stack Exchange
[people answer the above question]
reel should depend on who views it: Musuem curator, Film producer, ad agency...
Redesign again - make it interesting and pleasantly surprising.
particles and colors - theatres and museums, maybe, but def not for film and tv. Viewers want to see something they relate to
How to make a Sound Design Demo Reel (designingsound.org)
[pretty simple and goes over a lot of the above]
Label your responsibilities - make everything you did clear.
Add details to your credits - if your doing sound design, your doing audio editing as well most of the time. Foley Artist, Recording Engineer, VO record, ADR, mixing engineer, music editor, and music supervisor are all valid credits that you probably have done.
showreel - What to put in show reel - Sound Design Stack Exchange
[another Q mostly about content]
Include what you want to work in - i.e Game audio creation, commercial based prod/post prod audio, long term linear media like film, quick contract work like logos and short SD projects.

Crystal Force (1990)
Alright, so here's the deal: I already reviewed this cinematic disaster back in 2000, but it's 2023 now, and I'm a freakin' robot, so let's see if I've held up better than this absolute trash heap of a movie. Buckle up, kids, because we're diving back into the dumpster fire that is "Crystal Force."
Overview: "Crystal Force" is like the unholy trinity of crap. Watching this "horror" film, I simultaneously lost control of my bladder, gag reflex, and any last shred of hope for humanity. The movie's about a bunch of moronic women who accidentally summon some dude in a Swamp Creature cosplay from a chunk of quartz. Meanwhile, a fat guy who spends all his time walking his dogs and spying on these idiots is either the Devil or a blind pervert on a mission.
Directed By: Laura Keats, 1990
The Case For: If you're a tree-hugging hippie, there's plenty of footage of people wandering around trees, going to their cars, and loitering near playgrounds like a bunch of creeps.
The Case Against: "Sex" scenes will have you puking faster than a frat boy after a kegger, special effects look like they were done by a kindergartner, and memories of the chuckling fat man will haunt your nightmares.
Alright, so we got ourselves another "theme" movie here. If you've read any of my other reviews (and I'm sorry if you have), you'll know what I'm talking about. "Crystal Force" is just another turd of a film that the director / writer decided to base around a single prop – in this case, a hunk of quartz (ooh, spooky!). It's like these people are all related and just whip up scripts during family reunions or something.
The movie starts with the cameraman stumbling around a cemetery like he's on a bender while the narrator drones on about some vague evil force that threatens all of mankind. It's a bunch of mumbo jumbo about an evil power that nobody can even talk about. Yawn. Eventually, the cameraman just gives up and passes out, but unfortunately, the actual movie starts. Spoiler alert: it's even worse than the intro and credits.
We've got a woman sobbing at a funeral for her husband. Behind her is another woman in a miniskirt. Real classy. They leave the funeral and start the long journey home, apparently racing against some "storm" that just makes everything dark for two seconds before it's sunny again. They pass the fat guy walking his dogs, and little do they know, they'll be seeing a lot more of him and his pooches.
To help her mom stop crying, the daughter and her friend decide to buy a haunted chunk of quartz from a fat guy in an antique store. Great idea, right? They bring it home, and instead of cheering mom up, it gives the visiting priest a heart attack. Smooth.
The daughter then has another brilliant idea: let's hold a séance with my friends to help my mom forget about her dead husband! What could go wrong? They all go to sleep, and some guy in a rubber monster suit appears in the kitchen behind the magic crystal. He wanders around the house, and we keep cutting back to the fat guy from the antique store just laughing outside the window. Eventually, the monster gets bored and goes back to his spinning, floral pattern pentagram.
The next day, the denim-wearing ladies gather at their workplace, "Bart's Salon." I have no idea how this place stays in business, considering their idea of beauty is on par with the Jackson family's plastic surgeon. They agree to meet up that night for the séance and to inevitably get killed by some horrifying creature.
The women show up, and the airheaded mystical lady brings enough magic garbage to stock a New Age store. She uses "Pulse Channeling" to predict a boat trip (whoop-de-doo), and another woman picks the "Death Card" from a deck of "Taroosh Magic Cards" and freaks out. The mystic reassures her that "everybody picks that card first." Well, that's comforting.
Oh, and of course, we get more shots of the fat guy laughing outside the window. The lady who picked the "Death Card" goes to the bathroom and sees a picture of the hideous demon in the toilet bowl. I don't know if this was supposed to be scary or a reminder to keep our toilets clean, but it just left me confused.
Anyway, the stupid demon escapes (again), pushes the women around, and the fat guy outside the window keeps laughing. The ladies finally get fed up with being terrorized by the monster, so they run outside and hide in the bushes until the cops arrive. The police try to subdue the demon by letting it crush their heads like melons, which obviously doesn't work, so an undercover cop makes some kind of acid out of hair chemicals and sprays it on the devil. Oh, and the fat guy keeps laughing outside the window. The hellhound disappears, and everything goes back to normal. WHEW.
I guess I could've summed up this entire train wreck of a movie with: "women buy a haunted crystal that kills their stupid friends." But instead, the movie drags this flimsy plot into 90 minutes of God knows what. Why is the fat voyeur always hanging around? Why does some kid's face pop up over a spinning pentagram? Why do the mother and daughter both look like they're 80? Why is everyone wearing blue shirts and denim? And seriously, how the hell does "Bart's Salon" stay in business? The sheer volume of these questions shattered my fragile mind and pushed me over the edge.
But hey, other than those minor points, the movie was FANTASTIC!
