CIPHER MANUSCRIPT [aka VOYNICH MANUSCRIPT] by Roger Bacon[?] (Central Europe, c.1401-1599) 18th -19th century binding.
‘Scientific or magical text in an unidentified language, in cipher, apparently based on Roman minuscule characters; the text is believed by some scholars to be the work of Roger Bacon since the themes as the illustrations seem to represent topics know to have interested Bacon…. A history of the numerous attempts to decipher the manuscript can be found in a volume edited by R.S Brumbaugh THE MOST MYSTERIOUS MANUSCRIPT: The Voynich “Roger Bacon” Cipher Manuscript (Carbondale, IL, 1978). Although several scholars have claimed decipherments of the manuscript, for the most part the text remains an unsolved puzzle.’ — from an abstract by the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale

hello, my name is ash. i've been experimenting with ciphers for years now, since i was about thirteen years old (i turn eighteen next week).
currently, i am in my final year of highschool. in December i applied for creative writing courses at universities in the UK, and so far i've received offers back from three of them.
so far, this cipher doesn't have a name, so if you want, feel free to suggest possible names lol
rules
a = ó e = ō i = ô o = o u = ø
th = ę wh = ŵ and = æ
sounds made by "k" (kuh sounds) = ć sounds made by "s" (ssss sounds) = č (there is no letter c as c either makes "k" or "s' sounds)

When I was little I came up with my own code. a couple of years ago I found the encodings and drew this. It's funny that at the moment I don't even remember what is written here. Also, the sketchbook with the code got lost somewhere. I think I’ll never know what’s written here🥲 the basic concept in squares and triangles and the connections between them. each connection and dot on a certain side means a different letter. with all this, there are 36 variations of the original arrangement of letters. and the image in the middle I don’t even know what it means

Ciphertext is so cool... I don't know that many but so far I've figured out caesar cipher, and I'm working on rail fence rn!! I'm mainly confused with rail fence when the plain text has spaces in it, but I also still need to try with 4 or more rails.
I'm trying to figure out how to calculate how many rails there are when you don't know, although, if you do know the amount of rails and need to figure out the spacing between each letter on the top line, you can do 2x-3, the x representing the amount of rails! I've tested that with up to 6 rails, but I haven't tried with anything further than that yet. When there's 3 rails, half of the total amount of letters will be in the center line, and the top and bottom rows are each a quarter of the total amount of letters.
After I figure out rail fence with up to 10 rails (I don't know if that many will even be useful but it'll be nice to know) I'm gonna try to decode monoalphabetic ciphertext!
(also if anyone knows any other ciphers PLEASEE reply or reblog w/ them because I need to try to figure out some others as well)

Submissions for the Carnival Creativity Contest prompt: An Airy New Friend
To be a Worldhopper is to be often subjected to rather… unusual situations. Anything ranging from getting pulled into petty rivalries, to being attacked by pirates, to getting stuck in sprawling enchanted labyrinths. Not to mention enough encounters with literal deities that would make even the least devout person second guess themself. As for what Nyklo was currently witnessing? It may not have been the most fantastical thing she’d seen; but, it was certainly among the stranger ones. It had begun with stumbling into that colorful, buzzing tent housed within the cacophony of the Carnival (Which was another odd experience in itself) and being swindled into the most bizarre game of cards that she’d ever heard of in her life. Accolades– as the points were called– given and taken without rhyme nor reason. By the end of that first round, Nyklo was convinced that the jester running it was making up whatever numbers would allow him to make away with her potato ante. A second round did not occur. At least, not for her. Before Nyklo could mumble out an excuse to leave, the Worldhopper was bodily shoved aside from her seat at the low table. Her… companion... of a Peryton ruffling their wings before dropping onto the cushion she once occupied. And while picking herself off the floor, Nyklo watched as the Peryton dropped another bundle of potatoes before the jester. ”I’ll play.” … So began the routine for each following day of the Carnival: begin by meandering through a shifting maze, followed by nursing a cup of tea (Or two) while watching a wheel slowly tick its way around, and ending with a visit to the card game tent for a few rounds. There, Nyklo would sit back and bear witness to the fastest plays that she could never imagine. Pitre dropping down a card and rattling off its tribulations just as quickly as Caesari would chirp back a number (The Accolades..?-- “Hey, I thought we started with zero!”) or the answer to some arcane riddle (”Eleven?! That doesn’t even make any sense!”). Nevertheless, Caesari managed to win the grand prize at least a few times. So clearly the beast had managed to decipher something from the game that she wouldn’t have even begun to dream of. However… Sometime within those lightning rounds Pitre expressed an interest in the Peryton (Nyklo couldn’t fault him. Caesari was certainly an… eclectic creature to behold. Nevermind the ability to play– and win– his game. … Speaking without needing to move their mouth… Seeming to know much more than they let on… Delighting in being a general nuisance… ) and contemplated a companion of his own. When the jester stood up from the table and disappeared somewhere deeper into the tent, Nyklo figured he’d gone to fetch something for her to animate for him. It wouldn’t have been the first time it had been asked of her. But, alas, things can never be quite so simple for the Worldhopper. Pitre, in all his jester wisdom, has deemed balloons to be the supreme medium to construct a pet and Caesari, in turn, expressed an interest in wanting to see the results. So after a presumably proper amount of time for the development and creation of a befitting balloon beast, Worldhopper and companion were recalled through one of those bellspeakers. Thus leading up to now… … In the moment it took for Nyklo to drop herself in the entrance of an otherwise empty tent, the jester appeared. Baffled, she gazed up as Pitre– stood in the middle of a slow-laden lane of the Carnival– held aloft a… balloon pony? Yes, indeed; a pony fashioned of pastel-colored balloons and even decorated with a flourish of paint. He brandished the figure at Caesari. The Peryton in turn holding a balloon self-miniature in their maw and looking awfully amused. Where’d that come from? “A most fitting pet for a jester, yes? I see you’ve had one made for yourself.” Caesari’s ears flicked forward, eyes squinting in mirth. ”No.” “No?” Pitre frowned. “It couldn’t have been yourself. You have no hands.” The jester peered at Nyklo. The Worldhopper shrugged back; “No idea.” “Simple, really,” the Peryton continued on, grinning around the balloon-from-thin-air. ”Not real.” Caesari tightened their maw around the balloon animal, making it burst with a loud pop and startling a gaggle of passing by carnivalgoers. And just as the beast has said, not a trace of the balloon was left. Somehow, it never existed in the first place. "Unfortunate. Perhaps you would enjoy one more permanent?" A strange Carnival with strange inhabitants. Strange games with strange rules. But those, at least, were temporary. But strange companions? Much more permanent. Such is the life of a Worldhopper.

Every so often I think about going through my ciphertext tag and replacing all the vigenere text with its decrypted version bc it's been long enough that I'm not shy/embarrassed about what I had to say anymore, but that's too much work and also I do kind of think it's funny to have posts that are exclusive to only the people who go out of their way to figure out what I'm saying

Nver thought i would understand the appeal of doing oc stuff with others b/c my guys have always been so standalone and story-based until now 😭 Making the worst-best most genre-crossover OC universe with aliens and magic and futuristic technology and frankenstein-ass sci-fi with my partner is the most fun i've had with my guys in years i hope we both die for this one

Cryptography Column
Part 1
From Aivas
This month: Bigram Cipher
This month's cypher is one that hails back to some very fun old cryptography manuals. A bigram cipher relies on dividing your ciphertext up into two-letter segments, and replacing those with a single character. That means that you have a lot of combinations, and in turn, must have a large table of options to encipher from. On the other hand, it means that the ciphertext could be halved in length compared to the original plaintext. It's a bit time-consuming to encrypt and decrypt, and it's no more secure than any other cypher whose key can be stolen. All the same, this one is really fun. Because you need a large table, you can make it a long series of fun things. Little doodles? A series of fractal iterations? Other letters and computer characters? The sky's the limit. Today, we'll make use of a ciphering table from De furtivis Literarum Notis (1563), by Giambattista della Porta. It doesn't use every letter in the English alphabet, so our plaintext will have to be edited to suit that.

What if I started posting stuff written in cipher to see if anyone can decode it? Like no amount of googling would help you I made the ciphers up and have the only (handwritten) copy of the key. Would anyone like that? Is it a good idea?

JMJ: Frankenstein; or, the Modem Prometheus
Originally this was going to be titled "So Your Favourite Couple is Dead." but that would probably be a better outcome.
Spoilers for The Magnus Protocol episode 1, and all of The Magnus Archives by implication, below the cut.
This is going to be building on a couple of ideas I've seen throw around. Too often to cite any particular source, unfortunately, but I've not seen this conclusion reached and I think it might have more backing to it. Additionally, it's built upon the assumption that because "Chester" and "Norris" share VA's with Jon and Martin that they are Jon and Martin. Which naturally leaves that other J for "Augustus" being Jonah.
A very common thread in the conversations around episode 1's incident reports is that they're foreshadowing the major themes/beats of the show. The second one is obvious enough; don't got to the Magnus Institute. A sentiment we can all get behind. The other, a story of partial reanimation, has been taken to be a warning that the people you love don't always come back the same. I think that's likely the implication but a potential clue hasn't seen any attention AFAIK.
Before we get there though I need to briefly explain the history of JMJ. If you were a part of the ARG you'll know all about Colin's Code Collection. For those who don't know out favourite OIAR code monkey kept a selection of projects on the OIAR servers and through some covert means we gained access to this. Lots of it was normal stuff like Colin thinking he could improve Linux. However there were several encoded strings left by _6A1F7106A_$. These strings contained a few things but of importance for us is a few code blocks encoded in a monoalphabetic substitution cipher where the ciphertext was alchemic symbols. 6A1F7106A itself is an encoded string but unlike the rest of the ARG it was encoded in three layers. 6A is hexadecimal for "J", while 1F710 is Unicode for "🜐", and 🜐 was "M" in the aforementioned alchemic cipher. JMJ.
Now back to that incident. Coming back wrong was the entire premise of why that incident was scary. JMJ have come back too., and as that incident was about partial reanimation everyone ran with that idea mapping onto JMJ. But "Reanimation (Partial)" wasn't the only option for it as it could have bee "Reanimation (Amalgamative)".
This whole time they've been saying JMJ. It's not ever just been J, or M. Even before we knew it was JMJ it was 6A1F7106A. Always one string; like one name. We've been talking about how shunting the Fears through the portal could've mixed them together but they're not the only ones that could've happened to. So what if it's not about JMJ coming back wrong, but coming back pieced together into a new whole?
It's not just the naming either but how they act. An amalgamation of Jon, Martin, and Jonah vying for control. Jonah, again presuming Augustus is Jonah, is the rarest of the three because it's 2-on-1. Jon and Martin can try to suppress him. Additionally, the .jmj error also makes more sense if you treat them as a single entity rather than three entirely separate ones. The trailer initialises them all as separate things but any effects of them we see is a single name and given all the above they don't seem to be able to act independently. The reason the trailer mentions errors and undefined drives for the master–slave drives would then be because there is no singular consciousness in control of the whole. There is a lack of authority, no truly dominant aspect to them, no hierarchy. So they're vying for control and causing those errors. The .jmj error, the encrypted text when plaintext would have been more useful, Fr3-d1 breaking down, the fact they seemingly can only manifest single personalities at once, Jonah's rare appearances. There is an obvious conflict at play here.
The opening to this wasn't a joke either. I was planning on writing about how they're likely dead for real. We've known Elias' VA wasn't coming back for a long long time so if it's Jonah in there it's OG Jonah. OG Jonah who doesn't have a body, which means more than likely whatever has trapped them hasn't stored their bodies. They're in there forever. No getting out. No returning to life at all. Just a cyberspace hell.
But at least they've got some close company.
