You walked into the bar and the smell of whiskey smacked you in the face. You went up to the bar and ordered what everyone seemed to be having here: whiskey.

The bartender had a southern twang of an accent. A deep twang. The bar was loud and chaotic and mostly taken up by a dance space.

And there were many “cowboys” I guess you could call them on the dance floor, trying to get ladies you assumed.

You just called them pricks.

But among the mass of dancing cowboy boots, you noticed a particular woman.

She was knocking her boots in a rhythm that brought you into a trance.

She caught your eye and winked and you blushed, looking away. That’s when you noticed how many other people had their eyes trained on her.

Specifically, how many men were staring at her, like they were just undressing her with their eyes...

You continued your night, but your attention stayed on this woman.

She must have been at least 50... But Damn... That thought made her even more attractive. 

Eventually, the woman had decided that she was done dancing and made her way over to the bartender. You immediately looked away. 

“Buy me a drink, Darling?” the woman purred.

You turned towards her, and you swore you would do any fucking thing for her... 

“Um... Sure!” was your response.

She chuckled at that, “I just thought that with all your starin’, you’d at least owe me a drink”.

You stood there just in shook and embarrassment for a minute. “Um... I’m not really good at this.” you hesitantly tried to explain, but she interrupted you, “That’s alright darling, what’s your name?”.

You answered and asked back, “What’s yours?”.

She laughed and purred in response, “Depends what you mean to me. For now, you, darling, can call me Cissy.” 

You were at the bar drinking and talking for a bit, when eventually Cissy said “Well love, you should probably head back home. You’ve a good amount of alcohol and we wouldn’t want you becoming prey to anyone”.

As heart warming as this was, you were tipsy and starting to get bold. You leaned in and whispered, “But what if I don’t want to go home? What if I want to do something else?” You wiggled your eyebrows suggestively.

Cissy chuckled, “Let’s see what sober you has to see about that...”

She muttered a spell and you could feel all the alcohol dissipate from your body.

You immediately realized and regretted what you had previously said. And apparently your face showed that as Cissy erupted out in laughter.

When she had settled down she looked more serious and purred, “Now. Was that just drunk you takin’ or somethin’ else?”

You avoided her look. 

“I... You...nevermind.” you huffed. 

“No...” Cissy sternly purred, “Tell me.”

You looked at her in her radiance. And your doubts started to flood your mind...

“A goddess? Well, I don’t know about that...” Cissy interrupted you.

You looked at her.

You just nodded in response. 

Next thing you know, You’ve apparatted with Cissy into what you assume is her bedroom. It reflected her personality perfectly. And in the middle there was a massive bed. 

“Lay on the bed for me, darling.”

You did as you were told and layed down on your back on the bed. You were nervous. But you wanted her.

“It’s alright love, just tell me if I should stop and I will, alright?”

You nodded.

She took your clothes off, and then hers so that you were both completely naked and vulnerable to each other.

“That’s it, darling.” Cissy encouraged you as you fell deeper into the kiss.

I am shocked, SHOCKED you asked for this.

Barbara and Helena’s relationship over the years could probably be charted as “neutral, then irritation and anger, then mutual antipathy, then grudging cooperation, then best friend teammates”. It actually HELPS that they both had a small handful of writers committed to rehabilitating them over the two decades between 1989 to 2009. Babs has Ostrander & Yale, Dixon and Simone to thank for her complexity. Helena has Cavalieri, Rucka, and Simone working on her over the years. And both sets had to do a bunch of retcons and rationalisations of decisions OTHER writers who didn’t care as much about the characters made. Stitching this stuff together actually made for a much more interesting relationship than a lot of women characters are allowed to have in comics.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF YOUNG JUSTICE: DARK CRISIS 5

....yeah, I’m fine with it, for the most part. 

I understand the critique being made. It might be a little sloppy in the execution, some of Mickey’s talking points hit a bit too close to home for reasonable critiques of how these particular characters have been treated over the years especially since YJ has a heavily LGBTQ fanbase who’ve long hoped that YJ would be ALLOWED to be more inclusive, but I can tell Mickey is meant to represent the toxic mindset that prioritizes cis het white fuckboys’ preferences above the opinions of the diverse fanbase Young Justice actually has. 

At least, that’s what I think it’s driving at. Like, I think Tim being queer is playing a big role here. Look how Tim coming out split the overall DC fanbase at large when it first happened. I don’t see it a lot, because I’m on tumblr where majority opinion is pretty much YAY BI TIM! but I still see the youtube comments trying to pretend their distaste for Tim’s “sexuality retcon” has nothing to do with homophobia and that it’s “just not canon” - sucks to suck, man, it IS canon now. 

That’s what this comic is MEANT to be critiquing, I think. And like, Mickey is WRONG about Young Justice being what he wants them to be. He’s trying to MAKE them be versions of themselves they NEVER were. Whether you thought that was obvious enough (or if I’m just full of shit, lol), is up to you. 

On to commenting on individual panels. 

I LOVE Tim struggling to identify himself with the minority group. Identifying as queer is NEW to Tim, and it’s hard to let go of your privledge, especially when you fly under the radar. Tim’s a cis white man who’s identified as straight for a long time - he’s just not used to being subjected to homophobia or microagressions. He’s long been an ally, but he’s just not used to saying “I” yet in this context, and I love that little inclusion. 

YES, VERY GOOD! 

...yeah, I don’t like this. I hate that Cassie is my least favorite part of this series, but she’s kinda unreasonable. For one, like, why is Bart apologizing at all? HE wasn’t fooled. And Tim and Kon had their suspicions as well, even if they WERE somewhat fooled. And why does Cassie ASSUME they were fooled? And even if they were, how does she know they weren’t under some form of influence to think it was her? There’s just a lot of assumptions Cassie’s making here, and while Cassie can be abrasive at times, this comic isn’t really selling me on the idea that Cassie’s been done dirty over the years. Cassie HAS been done dirty over the years, but this comic doesn’t make me too sympathetic. The girls have been written all over the place, sort of similar to how Kon’s been up and down as well, and it’s just... WEIRD for a comic so concerned with feminism to do its own gals dirty like that when THEY WEREN’T EVEN IN THE FUCKED UP WORLD. 

I’ve seen that Anita will be showing up soon, and I’m kinda fucking NERVOUS about it, because if this is how Cissie and Cassie are written, what are they gonna do to poor Nita? 

So, as per my notes above, I think Tim being queer is playing a big part in Mickey’s... eveything. Because HIS perfect (racist, sexist, homophobic) world was BEFORE Tim came out. Now one of his “heroes” is intrinsically changed from what he wants him to be. He’s been trying to FORCE Tim to be the straight-presenting 14-year-old he used to be, but Tim’s not cooperating, so the world really DOES have it out for him. Bart, for all HE’S not cooperating, is still pretty much what Mickey expects him to be, only he’s eaten a library since then so he’s not “the dumb one” like he expects. And Kon is... Kon is having a crisis, ok, but he loves his friends.

Uh, oh, and Tim and Kon were just really gay with each other the whole comic, but I didn’t take pics this time because there were a lot of them and I’m just not as surprised this time. Nothing more noteworthy than what’s come before. Some fussing over Tim, general touching, you know the drill by now.
