i think the six of crows fandom has a real problem with acknowledging complexity in the characters which is ironic because it’s literally a book about morally grey characters. like yes kaz is a cold blooded murderer who cares more about money than being a good person but he’s also a dumb teen boy with a crush and a bad haircut. inej is a knife-wielding spy as well as a deeply religious girl who never stopped believing in kindness. jesper is a confident, reckless sharpshooter but he’s also incredibly scared and angry. wylan is an empathetic and kind artist along with being a dangerously intelligent explosives expert. nina is a fun, food-loving girl but she also stands up for the oppressed and struggles to recover from an addiction. matthias is an angry druskelle but he’s also the boy who learned to love grisha unconditionally. even kuwei has more depth than we give him credit for. he’s the flirty troublemaker as well as a grieving kid who’s had too much pressure put on him. they all have nuance, please don’t take that away because it’s such an important theme in the books

we all joke about the ice court heist being a triple date but also consider. they went to fjerda on a ship. kaz gave inej a ship and a berth. jesper thought that wylan blew up with the ship. matthias and nina nearly drowned in a shipwreck. all three ships have ship significance and it drives me insane

when you really think about it, each and every Crow is fucking terrifying. Kaz cut out a man's eye. Jesper can manipulate bullets and kill you from a mile away. Inej could be standing behind you with a knife pointed at your head and you wouldn't know. Matthias used to hunt grishas with a wolf by his side. Nina is a corpse witch, and even before that, she could explode a man's heart with pure willpower. And even Wylan, the "nicest, softest" one, made a bomb using Lumia, liquid fire, and an acid that could melt everything on its way. We see them as a cute little friend group, but other people think of Crows and probably have chills going down their spine.

Thinking about how the Dregs canonically have a pleasure house but Kaz vehemently had nothing to do with it even when he was involved in the finances of all their other businesses, and that shutting it down was probably one of the first things he did after the coup
See below cut for evidence/quotes and lil smidgen of analysis
In chapter 3 Van Eck calls Kaz “a bawd and a murderer”, to which Kaz replies “I don’t run whores, and I kill for a cause”. Whilst the more obvious implication of this would be that the Dregs isn’t affiliated with a pleasure house, we learn later that this assumption is incorrect. When Kaz pays off her contract Inej believes she’s moving to another house and Heleen replies “Haskell does own a pleasure house, somewhere in the lower Barrel, but you’d be a waste of his money there”, both confirming that the Dregs have a pleasure house and implying that they get very little income from it. Since we know that Kaz is the only one who actually does any work with the finances and that many times it’s been said that the Dregs would collapse without him not only because they would lose a lot of the fear his presence brings but also because they would lose most of their income, it’s fair to assume that the reason this business is unsuccessful is because Kaz refuses to be involved with it. I think that Van Eck’s accusation comes from him looking through the Dregs’ businesses (he has a collection of papers and information on Kaz and reads them during this conversation) and assuming Kaz is involved in all of them, and we can also follow the implication that Kaz is offended by this false accusation since he’s so quick and blunt in defending it during an otherwise lengthy and often philosophical conversation.

Matthias: When I first met you, I did not like you. Kaz: I'm aware of that. Matthias: But then you and I had some time together. Kaz: Uh-huh? Matthias: It did not get better.

Reasons to read Six of Crows
1. Actually good representation
- all the crows have ptsd of some sort that actually affect their actions
- religion also affects their actions (eg. Inej with her saints and unwilling to kill, Matthias with djel)
- Jesper and inej are darker skinned
- wylan is gay and jesper and Nina are bi
- wylan has dyslexia that he's really ashamed of because of his father(and when he told Kaz he(Kaz) literally just shrugged!!)
- Kaz is physically disabled (his leg) and needs to use a cane
2. Nina is canonically thick and curvy but is still described as beautiful and badass
3. Again with Nina
- she does eat more than the other crows and they don't judge her for it
- when she starts to eat less bc of parem her friends panic and try to get her to eat more
- and when she starts eating again they're so fucking happy
4. All the crows have their own horrible backstory and yet none of them have ever been in a toxic relationship
5. The boundaries that characters set are actually respected (eg. Kaz with his gloves and no-touch rule)
6. It's so funny ("My ghost won't associate with your ghost", "I'm going to get someone to burn my kruge for me / you could pay someone to pay someone to burn your kruge / I'll pay someone to pay someone to pay someone to burn my kruge / you know what the really big bosses do? They pay someone to pay someone...", "MAYBE I LIKED YOUR STUPID FACE" among other examples)
7. There are such impactful and beautiful quotes ("I would come for you", "I have been made to protect you" etc)
8.
Tumblr media
9. To elaborate with the 'horrible backstory' thing
- Inej is a victim of sex trafficking
- Wylan was nearly murdered by his father's men for not being able to read
- Matthias was brainwashed from a young age to hate Grisha
- Nina (and other Grisha) were kidnapped and abused by Matthias and his fellow drüskelle
- Jesper's mum died when he was 7 years old
- Kaz's dad died when Kaz was 9 and left him and his older brother (Jordie) to sell the farm and go to Ketterdam. Jordie died from a plague a short time later and Kaz had to use Jordie's dead, plague-ridden body to swim to shore after being mistaken as dead and loaded onto the Reapers' Barge along with Jordie and then find a way to survive with no money and no family to go to

Wylan ends up getting a Dregs tattoo. It's very high up on his forearm so he doesn't have to worry about the other members of the Council seeing it if his sleeve rode up a bit. Only the Crows know he got it

I am finishing Crooked Kingdom and I am SCREAMING. Parts or phrases that made me feral:
Matthias chapter 40: my chest HURTS. Matthias had such an amazing journey!! He wanted to do good, he died leaving the hate with which he was raised behind!! He wanted Nina to save those boys of Fjerda like him!!!!!!
Wylan going “I’ll say whatever you want, Father. Just don’t let them hurt me anymore.” Because like what a BADASS move?! Also him pretending to be able to read!!! Power move! I adore him so much.
Jesper telling Van Eck “I’ll read to him.” As in I’ll read to Wylan, as in I will not leave him, as in I LOVE THAT MAN?!
I have never loved a group of characters so much, my beautiful crows ❤️

inej and kaz having issues with touch due to trauma. kaz and wylan drowning and being reborn in the ketterdam harbor. wylan and jesper feeling like they have to hide a part of themselves due to their fathers. jesper and nina being grisha with addictions. nina and matthias being raised as a weapon rather than a human. matthias and inej being deeply religious. inej and wylan making themselves smaller because of the abuse they suffered. wylan and matthias being forced into a life of crime. matthias and kaz losing their parents and siblings. kaz and jesper being thrown into the barrel because of reckless behavior involving money. all of these characters being so different yet so similar and forever interconnected with each other because they know that no one else will understand

Wylan chapters have some of my favourite quotes ever 🥹
"Wylan summoned every bit of bravado he'd learned from Nina, the will he'd learned from Matthias, the focus he'd studied in Kaz, the courage he'd learned from Inej, and the wild, reckless hope he'd learned from Jesper, the belief that no matter the odds, somehow they would win."
- Crooked Kingdom, page 427
"Until this moment, Wylan hadn't quite understood how much they meant to him. His father would have sneered at these thugs and thieves, a disgraced soldier, a gambler who couldn't keep out of the red. But they were his first friends, his only friends, and Wylan knew that even if he'd had his pick of a thousand companions, these would have been the people he chose."
- Crooked Kingdom, page 334
"His father had wanted Wylan to vanish. He'd wanted them to disappear the way he'd made Wylan's mother disappear, and for a long time, Wylan had wanted the exact same thing. That had all started to change when he came to the Barrel, when he got his first job, when he met Jesper and Kaz and Inej, when he'd begun to realize he was worth something."
- Crooked Kingdom, page 422
"We were all supposed to make it."
- Crooked Kingdom, page 510
"Wylan wanted to be brave, but he was cold and bruised, and worse- he was surrounded by the bravest people he knew and all of them seemed badly shaken."
- Crooked Kingdom, page 315
"He had no illusions about why Kaz had looked out for him, but he also knew he never would have survived this long without his help. And Kaz didn't care if he couldn't read. Kaz and the others teased him, but they'd given him a chance to prove himself. They valued the things he could do instead of punishing him for the things he couldn't."
- Crooked Kingdom, page 322
Wylan just looks up to them and loves them so so much it makes me sick 😭😭

can you imagine the Crows playing Monopoly? Kaz would think he's definitely gonna win but Wylan is kicking his ass. Jesper is choking on his laughter bc he knows if he laughs at Kaz he's gonna get punched. Matthias spends half the game in prison. Nina is always in debt. Inej has the three cheapest places and maybe two houses and she just enjoys the game. Wylan counts his money sweating as Kaz looks him dead in the eye while paying third time in a row.
