I love how Matt Murdock is just the Biggest Dilf™️ and you can literally see the chemistry with anyone. Jennifer? Sweet, cute, funny, heart-warming. Foggy? This man is the #1 Matt Murdock apologist and he would jump off a cliff before he lets anything happen to him. Frank? Delicious shit. The chemistry, the parallels. “You [Matt] are what I could’ve been, I [Frank] am what you are afraid to become.” Elektra? Hot as fuck. Invented chemistry. People were converted to bisexuality thanks to them.

But Claire? I am never shutting up about her. I’m unhinged over this woman. This woman who despite the fact that she couldn’t defend herself from many of the people she stood against—people twice her size, people with guns, people who had trained, people with superpowers—never let it stop her from helping others. So she meets this man—this man who acts as though he has to carry the weight of the entire world on his shoulders—and falls in love. But there’s just so much she can take before she walks away.

And I love her for that. People have a habit of framing female characters who act like she does as weak or whatever but that’s not Claire. The scene where she says goodbye to Matt kills me but it’s just so good. You can see she feels for him, but she also realizes that as for now, Matt isn’t the kind of man who’s right for her—the kind of man that he could be—and she lets him go. Same she did with Luke. Because there’s only much she can take.

And I can’t stop thinking about how Clairedevil was the epitome of ‘right person, wrong time’. The Matt who goes to LA and meets Jennifer is a different man, a better man. Jennifer accepts both the man and the hero and I love her for that, but Claire’s problem was never Daredevil but rather the way Matt was so obsessed with his duty as a hero that he couldn’t see past it. I think Claire would love this changed man who has finally found a balance in his life.

For real, it depends (sorry @ my discord who will make fun of me for yet another "it depends" answer). It probably depends on two things for me: length, and, like...the quality of the romance?

With regard to length, if you search Daredevil Soulmate AUs on AO3 in order of ascending word count, the first five pages are all fics under 5k. I generally prefer longer fics that I can kinda get lost in, unless it's just a quick fic that I read because it's funny or fluffy. I definitely don't prefer romance-centered fics on the short side, though, which leads to point two....

I'm literally so opinionated about ships! It's never enough for me that two characters are hot or "have chemistry" - I wanna know what it is about each other's personality that appeals to them. And a lot of Soulmate AUs, at least the ones I've read, are too much of a love-at-first-sight phenomenon.

An example of a Soulmate AU I really adore is Straightforwardly by finaljoy. Finaljoy is my hands-down favorite Clairedevil writer, and they do an amazing job with this fic. By virtue of the mechanics of soulmates in this universe, Claire figures out what's going on first, and has time to really think about how she feels about the fact that the Devil of Hell's Kitchen (whom she just pulled out of the literal trash) is her soulmate. Matt finds out later, but he also has to process it and decide what, if anything, to do about it.

In other words, it's not a case for either of them of "we're soulmates so everything is perfect now" or even "we're soulmates so we're automatically in love."

It's complicated.

And it's 12k, so both of them are given room to really wrestle with the implications of their situation.

So yeah. Give me the complicated Soulmate AUs, I guess? And if anyone has any recs, please feel free to share them in the reblogs and replies!

I'm sorry but, if Matt loves the sound of her voice, can't we have a radio au in which Claire is the host of a show (possibly even working sometimes with Trish!!!) and Matt is like, smitten with her tone, the intensity of her voice whenever she talks about hell's kitchen, the fruity softness she has during interviews, and he just loves when her mic is opened beforehand and he can hear her whispering parts of the songs as they're fading before her cue to continue the show??????!

Rewatching Daredevil S1:

Really wish they'd not had so many people of color doing horrible shit. I vastly prefer Turk's later characterization as a morally gray guy filling a role, not this earlier human trafficking thing. (Also, why not have that spot be another white dude???? Anyways.)

Oh Wesley, you super capable henchman who went the route all super capable henchpeople do. It was a good bit of plot, one of the best in the season, but it hurt. You were fun. [f ]

I miss the epic fight choreography Matt got back in S1. Now they have him get knocked around and then sometimes do a badass thing. It's so bad. This was some nice work. Too much rushed production.

Remember before they had Karen get Ben killed and take his job???? God what a fucking awful bit of writing.

ALLORAAAAAAAAA

This is the only Daredevil fic I can talk atm because it’s the only one who actually has a plot—

I can’t believe how long it’s taking me to write it considering it will be 2k words maximum, and the ones I’ve written aren’t even that good (yet?), but I really think something good can come out of it!

We don’t really knows what happens to Claire after the Netflix’s series about the Defenders ended, and technically speaking, they’re not in the MCU—but I love cherry-picking canon and not give a f*ck about the rest <3 

Infinity War and Endgame happen, and Claire is snapped. Five years pass in the blink of an eye. Eventually, Claire comes back to a life that doesn’t feel like her own. Her mother, who was just fine the last time they saw each other, has died.

It’s not easy for Claire to get back on track. She knows she needs therapy, but she can’t really bring herself to talk to a therapist just yet. Instead, she throws herself in her work heart and soul. She works long shifts in the hope that helping others will help find some peace, but deep down she knows it won’t work. Her mother is dead, the world has moved on and she can barely make sense of it.

She barely talks to people from her ‘past life’, until one day, she meets Matt. They end up going out for a cup of coffee (as friends) and they share a lot. The Matt I intend to write is the Matt we saw in She-Hulk, so less angsty and more happy, though I definitely intend to keep Netflix’s Daredevil canon.

Honestly, this fic happened around the same time of this rant, Clairedevil literally is the epitome of ‘right person, wrong time’ and I’m forever bitter that we were robbed of a proper reunion holy shit!!! So I just hope I can get something good out of this, but at the same time I’m torn between a happy ending and a more bittersweet one. 

The more they talk, the more Claire can’t make sense of the man she has in front of her. He’s joking, smiling, and laughing in a way he didn’t use to. There’s a line that goes like, 

Sometimes, Claire thinks that all it took to fall in love with Matt Murdock was just one single glance, and looking at him smiling at her as though he hasn’t a care in the world, she feels like falling all over again. Something that has died could relive again.

Just like her. 

And though it definitely needs to be edited, I just! love it!
