Herengracht, Books & Love

I know a boy who lives in Clapham Common. He is planning the chapters of his autobiography before they happen in whippets of conversations with friends over drinks and at parties and he writes them all down in a list.

I think it is very smart and his titles make me laugh very much.

An old boyfriend once told me that he hated how I compartmentalised my life into chapters. I meant it really as a compliment that he had been a wonderful chapter in my life and that I wished him luck in the next one, but we were only eighteen and I can see now why he would not take it so nicely as the comment was intended, since, it was really by choice that that particular chapter had ended and in fact it was because I had stopped wanting it to continue. And that is just a nail that is hard to bite anyway you try to look at it.

Approximately a year later I found myself on a bench stationed by the canal on Herengracht at midnight. I was sitting opposite a very lovely boy who didn’t like me quite as much as I wanted him too. Very romantic; very unsatisfying. This is captivating for a girl.

We shared at least an hour of the night, at a distance, extending the metaphor of people being books. Some books you have known since childhood. You have been read them by your parents and they by theirs. These are your family. Other books you have discovered by yourself independently and quite adventurously and these books share your memories of wonderful journeys and they are your dearest friends. Some books you thought were rubbish and these are simply people you don’t like. I remember he said to me, because of course you are your own book too, ‘would you still love me if a chapter wasn’t quite right yet, or I had to go back and rub some words out? Perhaps if my pages are full of mistakes and when I turn to the next it is fully empty, would you still love me?’. And while I thought that is very unorganised, I said yes, because I would and we kissed and it was great.

This was stupid because shortly after we went on holiday he kindly let me know that he was dating someone else.

Lesson 1 do not date guys who scribble in books.  

And now here I am, picking at my nails and wondering why when I tried to write a chapter about books, I have written about boys. There is something very romantic about books and stories and reading and those heart glow moments have to relate to something tangible. But it is also very irritating and inconvenient that in my mind everything must be so bloody romantic.

To change the subject, I like TS Elliot Old Possums Book of Practical Cats. My Granny gave me my first copy and ever since I have thought that it is special. Although, I couldn’t recall a poem completely if you asked me to, I am sure that the Jubblies had a very lovely time on their boat and the Old Gumbie Cat ended up being very happy catching lots of mice (probably). I have given it since as a gift only to the most special wonderful people. This, at a time, included the boy who I told was a chapter. In return I received a book of golden rules for social climbing.

And I haven’t really written this chapter with any purpose or structure or consistency like I intended to and I keep starting sentences with ‘And’, violating every rule of writing which you learn at school. And if you have learned anything from this chapter, which I cannot see how you quite possibly could have, forget it all now and continue to romanticise at absolutely every possible opportunity you may find. To throw caution even further to the wind, I will be ending this chapter in the most monumental way;

𝙂𝙞𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙙 🍕 @berberepizzeria_ldn opens in London on 15th October! With an amazing 12 restaurants around Italy (@berberepizzeria) they have crossed the waters to open their first restaurant in Clapham Common, and it’s very nice! The spacious new restaurant in the former home of Radio Alice has a menu that will want you trying everything, from their beautiful burrata with aubergine, or their montanarina, which is fried dough balls, topped with nduja or prosciutto. Their Neapolitan style pizzas are also hard to choose from, and our choices came down to Spicy Diavola, margherita with nduja, prosciutto di Parma, and four cheese, mushroom & truffle. The pizzas were really good, having a more crispy dough than soft, which helps with eating by the slice as it stops all the toppings from falling off, but still remains some of that softer chewy dough that you see in Neapolitan pizzas. You have to try the crust dips too, especially the nduja and honey. @berberepizzeria_ldn are running a soft launch up until 15th, with 50% off food! If you’ve got time to fit it in this week whilst the offer is on then I recommend you make plans. But remember, soft launch is a time for the restaurant to get things right, so be patient.
