Since I’m noticing a new influx of followers, hi, hello, willkommen, bienvenue, welcome! Bem-vindos! ❤️
Quick about me: My name is Skyler, I live in Brazil and work on a call center. Not the most glamorous of jobs, but it allows me to buy stuff for my Drag Queen. So yeah, desk jockey by day, drag queen by night.
I am transgender and occasionally gnc. I’m bisexual, and I love to explore those themes mainly by poems. My preferred methods are Terza Rima, Sonnets and Free-Form.
I also happen to draw art and fanart of OCs and I am absolutely obsessed with Caravaggio in particular.
Shitty stuff: I suffer from Bipolar Mood Disorder and Hidradenitis Suppurativa. I am on medication for bipolarity, so I rarely have mood swings or fits of mania anymore. With HS I just hope and pray.
Please challenge me to a match of chess, you will make my day.
Now, to more important things:

I’ve been binging Clare Siobhan’s not so berry challenge all week and I’m up to the part where Jasper had married Cassandra Goth and apart from that randomness being so on brand for Jasper (he’s my fav side character so far easily😂) I’m just having massive brain rot about how perfect these 2 are together!
Both of them have the music lifetime aspiration giving them something to talk about. Additionally, their personality’s seem to balance each other out. Jasper is a goofball, extroverted and random while Cassandra has the gloomy trait and is likely more introverted. They’re literally a sun and moon couple and I adore it! On top of that, Cassandra’s ex husband died I think and left her with 2 kids. And while I’ve seen loads of people say that they never expected Jasper to be a dad, we saw in his childhood that he was always trying to help his parents take care of his baby sister. So Jasper clearly doesn’t have too much of an issue with kids and that’s proved more by him deciding to have them with Cassandra off screen (also them ending up with quadruplets is just so on brand for Jasper omg😂). They also went to high school together and Cassandra was one of the people Jasper had romance with early on so they have the childhood/teen romance thing going for them! Also the fact that Clare gave them matching tattoos that say “it’s only life” is just too cute to me, I love them so much!!
Basically, I’m very emotionally attached to this ship despite it having barely any screen time and I don’t see that changing😂

Folk Pop Singer Clare Siobhan Finds the Light in the Darkness on "Seek the Sun" EP
Tumblr media
Clare Siobhan (pronounced “shuh-VON”) is a genre-blending East Coast artist with a voice beyond her years. With her distinctive, rich alto voice, she paints pictures of love and loss, hope and fear, stillness and change through her deeply personal and introspective lyrics. Siobhan’s music is a folk-pop-soul exploration of movement, growth, and light.
youtube
On the focus track “I Built a House With an Arsonist,” Siobhan wrote the song as a playful exploration of bad habits and wearing her rose-coloured glasses in her personal life. A snippet of the song was released on TikTok before it was finished, and fans found that it was really relatable if they were experiencing challenging situations in their lives: breakups, divorces, difficult relationships, and feelings of personal betrayal from loved ones.
With the fan input in consideration, Siobhan finished the song with a certain story in mind. Despite the consequences of giving the benefit of the doubt to certain people, she says, “I wouldn’t change my habits now. Even if it comes with a little risk, I do think that being a persistent optimist, and trying to always see the good in others, is a worthwhile worldview.”
The main theme of the Seek the Sun EP is fairly straightforward: no matter how rough things are, there’s always joy to be found somewhere, and there’s always a way out of the darkness. Across the six tracks, it’s a bit of a kitchen-sink “life” record, full of songs for a twenty-something year old. Love, change, fear, joy, hope, bad habits – all these things surround us in our youth, and it’s up to us what we make of them as we age. These are songs for growing, hoping, loving, worrying, healing…and singing and dancing if it suits you.

dogs or cats? both. i could never pick between them. my family has up to at least 10 dogs (counting my grandmother’s dogs) because people tended to just drop them off and we took them in, and at least 5 cats. i live in the middle of the boondocks with the rednecks so yeah
youtube celebrities or normal celebrities?“ i don’t really stan people usually??? ? ? like i don’t really understand the hype? im more of a “oh cool, this actors good” or “this youtuber has nice content! i like watching them.”
if you could live anywhere where would be? somewhere that i own and that is close to those i care about really. though it would be really cool to move to another state or country.
Disney or DreamWorks? both. i’ve watched both, but i like dreamworks a bit more and no that isn’t just because im biased towards toothless. nope, not at all.
favorite childhood tv show(s)? yu-gi-oh, winx club, scooby doo, teenage mutant ninja turtles, etc. a lot of what came on 4kids TV. yes, i did watch that. i actually still love their sailor moon dub mostly because its hilarious at certain parts because the actress is so robotic.
the movie you’re looking forward to most in 2020? im not up to date with movies so i have no idea lol
favorite book you read in 2019? gotta say the Lunar Chronicles. i love space, i love fairy tales. that put those together to make a brilliant story for me.
marvel or dc? both? i really don’t like having to choose between things and just like what i like bro
if you choose marvel favorite member of the X-men? if you choose DC favorite justice league member? storm and wonder woman
night or day? night, im a night owl lol. its a bad habit that i’ve picked up. i keep staying up late and then regretting it in the morning.
favorite Pokémon? ninetales. im biased towards pretty and ninetales is pretty. i play pokemon go and i hatched an ice vulpix and now have an ice ninetales. i love them you don’t understand
Top 5 Bands? uh tbh i never pay attention to the names of bands when i listen to music. i just know if i like it when i listen to it and don’t pay attention to the artist usually.
top 10 books? uhhhhhhhhh i have way too many to even attempt to make a top 10.
top 4 movies? again, same as the books. i have too many lol
america or europe? uh idk bro i live in the us but i hate it but i haven’t been anywhere else so uh??? ? ?
tumblr or twitter? i’ve only really used tumblr so tumblr simply because i know how to use it. twitter confuses me. i will say tho, tumblr gotta step up their game and be better
pro-choice or pro-life? Pro-choice
favorite youtuber? safyia nygard, markiplier, callmekevin, graystillplays, clare siobhan.
favorite author? rick riordan.
tea or coffee? neither.
OTP? depends on my hyperfixation at the moment.
do you play an instrument/ sing ? i can sing but not play an instrument. i took choir all through out middle school and high school and i tried to learn guitar from my dad but he never finished teaching me and its been so long that i’ve forgotten.

What’s up buttercup
So lets just get right down to it I guess? My name is Christina but you can just call me Tina for short. I am 17 (turning 18 in October) I live in California US and I am a senior in High School. Let me give you a little toe dip into who I am. Ok well jeez, where do I start. I am kinda obsessed with YouTube and watch a whole lotta different YouTubers. I can go from watching Zoella to Shane Dawson to Jacksepticeye to Clare Siobhan to Sam and Colby to Jennxpenn and many more. Also listen to all genres of music, well except like hard screamo and some country I’m not a fan of, but other than that, love them all. I guess I should give you a list of some of my fav artists now. So I am currently obsessed with Billie Eilish but I also like 5SOS, Khalid, Shawn Mendes, Little Mix, all 1D members, All Time Low, MGK, Adele, and Oh Wonder and literally so much more it’s insane. And I love a good video game. I get so excited just thinking about playing a new game some goodies I like are LoZ (of course), Skyrim, Final Fantasy, Mass Effect, love a good Sims, Pokémon, Beyond Two Souls, Fable, Sonic, also a lot of old GameCube and PlayStation 2 games that no one has probs heard of but are good. Now Tv Shows, I love a good reality tv show idk why but I really like them. Also I want to watch more like Anime shows but haven’t found any good ones. Some Shows I love are Bobs Burgers (my absolute fav show btw), Pokémon (the original ones), Digimon, AGT, Ghost Adventures, Friends, any like House shows, Family Fued, Rise, I cant think of more but there is definitely more. I would type more stuff about me but honestly there’s not much lol. I’ve honestly never done anything like this before but thought it would be fun. I preferably would like you to be 16 or older but I mean, if you want to talk to me I won’t shut you down. I couldn’t care less about what you look like or what gender you are I 100% support the LGBTQ+ community so don’t be afraid to talk to me I am judge free and won’t bite:) You can hit me up on here or Insta or Twitter. Insta is Christtiina.t and Twitter is Christina11_12 I guess this is farewell then. Adios muchachos!

How To Play The Concertina Like Noel Hill
Tumblr media
Noel Hill is the master of the modern concertina. He singlehandedly revolutionised traditional Irish concertina playing, forever changing the musical landscape.
The concertina owes much of its popularity today to Noel’s innovative and inspirational playing and his virtuoso technical brilliance.
Hill is an other-worldly player: the ornamentations and variations he brings to the dance tunes are imaginative and thrilling, his air playing is arresting, and the rhythm and lift in his music in general is as good as there is. – The Irish Echo
Noel’s playing style is not only iconic but unique. He has inspired generations of players yet who strive to replicate his sound, yet his playing is instantly recognisable, right from the first note. There is only one Noel Hill.
What is it that makes his playing stand out from the crowd? Keep reading and together we’ll explore his iconic concertina playing style, as well as his approach to traditional Irish music.
I’ll show you how you too can follow in the footsteps of this concertina master and take your playing to the next level.

Piping Influence
Noel has previously stated that he would rather be an uilleann piper. Luckily for us, he was born into a family of concertina players, and followed in their footsteps.
His love of the pipes is evident in his playing however, and has contributed hugely to the evolution of his unique musical style. Noel has spent many years studying and attempting to emulate the great pipers.
Legendary Irish uilleann pipers Willie Clancy and Séamus Ennis have had the strongest influence on both Noel’s concertina playing style and his approach to the music.
I was fascinated by the pipes. I hear Clancy playing in my head all the time and there’s a very strong influence of piping on my playing. After moving to Dublin I spent a lot of time in the company of Séamus Ennis who often stayed with us and talked about music and piping – he was a remarkable man. – Noel Hill
The piping influence can be heard to this day, remaining a fundamental element of Noel’s playing.
While the concertina’s reedy tone is already reminiscent of that produced by the uilleann pipes, Noel incorporates further elements of the piping tradition.
This can be heard in the phrasing he uses, the bass notes and chords he chooses, and his heavy use of ornamentation – particularly the ornamented low D’s which mirror the use of cranson the pipes.
Hit play, close your eyes and listen to the video below. It’s not difficult to conjure the image of a master piper in action:
Listen to any of Noel’s albums or catch him live and you’ll soon become aware of the way he uses certain bass buttons on the concertina to recreate the timbre of the uilleann pipes’ drones and regulators, providing the subtlest of backdrops for his eloquent melodic expressions. – Irish Music Review
Some might marvel that such a virtuoso of the concertina could possibly lament his choice of instrument. I would argue however that this sense of longing and, to an extent, envy, largely contributed to Noel’s in depth exploration of the concertina’s potential. His exploration of style and sound transformed the landscape of modern Irish concertina playing.
Recommended Listening
If you want to play the concertina like Noel Hill then you need to get busy listening to the great musicians who first inspired him. This includes Mrs. Crotty, Paddy Murphy, Willie Clancy and Séamus Ennis to name but a few.
It’s important to understand the inspiration behind Noel’s own playing, and the rich musical tradition he tries to honour with each performance.
In addition to this plethora of brilliant music, Noel’s own discography is mandatory listening not just for budding concert players, but for anyone with an interest in traditional Irish music.
The Irish Concertina
Noel’s debut album, The Irish Concertina was released in 1988 and won Folk Album of the Year that same year.
This humble album remains to this day a masterful showcase of both Noel’s technical brilliance and the concertina’s capabilities.
One of my favourite tracks from this iconic album is Noel’s haunting rendition of the slow air Táimse im’ Choladh.
Noel is one of the greatest slow air players of our time. His deep connection to the music is evident at all times yes, but it’s particularly palpable when he plays an air. You can hear a tenderness in each note, carefully selected and played and a deep sense of vulnerability.
In Noel’s own words:
When I play music, it is like a prayer to God…the story of my life is told through music and whatever suffering I endured is reflected in my music. It lifts whatever burdens you are carrying. Without music I think I would have lost my mind.
Prior to Noel’s influence, the concertina was still largely seen as an instrument to provide music for dancers. Dance tunes were played in a rhythmic, punchy style with little thought given to musical interpretation.
Noel’s unique approach however transformed the concertina before our very eyes into an instrument capable of depth, feeling and highly emotive musical performance.
The Irish Concertina 2
Noel’s follow up solo album didn’t emerge until 2005.
Other concertina players, inspired by Noel, had risen to prominence since, but none had succeeded, in my opinion, in rivaling Noel Hill.
This album features not only the masterful playing of Ireland’s greatest concertina player, but also a dream team of accompanists – Alec Finn, Steve Cooney and Brian McGrath – whose playing perfectly complements Noel’s sleek concertina stylings.
Technically, The Irish Concertina 2 is a wondrous affair, a panoply of rapid-fingered twists and turns which reinvigorates… More crucially, however, our doyen has retained his ability (and agility) to do things with the concertina of which other exponents can barely dream (and some remain illegal in parts of Mayo).– Irish Music Review
You can hear Noel in action below, accompanied by the mighty Brian McGrath and fiddle legend Frankie Gavin:
The Irish Concertina 3 – Live in New York
Noel’s third solo album is a slightly different offering. Recorded live in New York, it gives a different insight into his playing.
It is filled with an electrifying energy that only live performance can bring and is nigh impossible to replicate in a studio.
A dozen years after the release of last recording, Hill is emerging from the silence, the void, with this lightning rod of a live recording. The sound is bright, and Hill’s creative energies coarse through his richly eclectic tune choices…
His soulful feel for the slow air is inimitable, so that ‘Ó Rathaille’s Grave’ traces its lonesome path into the listener’s subconscious to echo long after the final note has sounded. – Siobhan Long, The Irish Times
Collaborations
It’s not just Noel’s solo material that’s worth a listen. Hill has performed and recorded with some of the biggest names in the tradition.
There are two collaborations however that, in my opinion, stand head and shoulders above the rest.
In 1979, Noel recorded a duet album with Clare fiddle player, Tony Linnane. This recording was revolutionary in its own subtle way. It was the first time I recall a concertina player perfectly matching the phrasing of a fiddle player.
While the concertina retained its distinct and iconic change, there was something different about how Noel was shaping the music. There was no doubt that he was perfectly in sync with his duet partner. No easy feat on two such differing instruments.
Watch them in action below, accompanied by the great Alec Finn and Matt Molloy:
Kindred Spirits
Noel has also recorded two beautiful albums with fellow Clareman, Tony MacMahon.
It’s this collaboration that has left the most lasting impression on me, perhaps because these albums feel like the meeting of two kindred spirits.
The first album, I gCnoc Na Graí (In Knocknagree) was recorded live in a Sliabh Luachra pub in 1985 and features a selection of lively duets and solos, interspersed with the exquisite slow air playing for which both musicians have become known.
The second, Aislingí Ceoil (Music Of Dreams) was also recorded live in Dublin in 1993. This time, the pair were joined by the stunning vocals of Iarla Ó Lionard.
Again, the simplicity allows each performer to shine. There are no complex arrangements, no unnecessary bells and whistles – just each doing what he does best.
Each note is played with intent, as a tribute to all those great players who have gone before them and in whose footsteps they have followed. Yet still, the music is electrifying!
If ever a recording could capture the sheer enjoyment of performing Irish music and dance then this is it! – The Living Tradition
MacMahon and Hill have become lifelong friends since with a shared reverence not just for the music, but also for each other. You’ll never hear anyone speak more highly of Noel Hill’s playing than the magical Tony Mac Mahon himself:
As a musician, he is a soul tonic, the true master of the Irish concertina. He has absorbed everything that makes this music special and reflects it back to us.
His soulful playing of the old song-airs of Ireland is the perfect introduction to his art; from the life affirming detail of his dance music to the plaintive long notes of the slow airs, and all created on a musical instrument – smaller than a shoe-box, between his hands. – Tony MacMahon
Teaching
Noel Hill is in fierce demand as a teacher and it’s easy to understand why. While other master musicians are more focused on solo careers, Noel has great reverence for the ‘noble art of teaching’.
He has previously expressed that he feels a sense of responsibility to pass on the music and assist with the preservation of the tradition. He is a firm believer that musicians must give back to the tradition which has provided for them so richly. It is this deep love for traditional Irish music that Noel wishes to carry on in his legacy.
While strong technique is vital for good concertina playing, Noel doesn’t just teach technique. He also encourages his students to develop their own playing style and learn to create and express their own musical soundworld.
Despite learning from the great masters himself, Noel has succeeded in carving out a sound and that style that is uniquely personal and he encourages his students to do the same.
Noel preaches the importance of making the music your own, while remaining true to the traditions.
Each year, hundreds of concertina players flock to the Noel Hill Concertina Schools which take place in both Ireland and the US. It’s a great place to learn from the master himself and become immersed in his unique playing style.
Those who’ve attended typically rave about the experience and leave as converts to Noel’s playing method, ready to preach his musical gospel to the world.
Unique Playing Method
Noel learned much of his concertina playing from his uncle, but perhaps the most significant influence on his playing method came from legendary Clare concertina player, Paddy Murphy.Paddy Murphy is considered a pioneer of the concertina. He deviated from the older two-octave playing style of Mrs. Crotty and the previous generation and began to explore the potential of the instrument.
He borrowed ornamentation from other instruments, particularly pipes and fiddle, and developed a system of alternative scales to facilitate smooth, flowing phrases, while playing in new, often unused keys. It’s his unique system of cross-row fingering for which he is best remembered today.
Noel Hill learned this cross-fingering playing method from Paddy and has continued to develop it, adapting it to suit the needs of his own playing.
What is Cross Row Fingering?
Cross row fingering is intended to reduce bellows movement. This allows for smoother, more flowing musical phrases.
It also aims to reduce the potential for chopping. Chopping is when a player uses the same finger to play two buttons one after the other. This is something all styles of concertina players aim to avoid.
How Does it Work?
The Anglo concertina is, as you already know, a diatonic instrument. The Anglo concertinas used to play traditional Irish music are typically tuned to C/G. This means that the middle row of buttons on the concertina contains all the notes needed to play the scale of C major. The innermost row contains all the notes to play the scale of G major. This versatile instrument is also bisonoric, meaning each button plays two different notes depending on whether you push or pull the bellows.
Many notes feature more than once on the concertina, and can be played by playing alternate buttons. Whether the note is produced by pushing or pulling the bellows depends on which button you choose to play.
So, if a certain phrase or melody is creating an unnecessarily choppy sound with too much bellows movement, you can simply replace one of the notes by playing it on an alternative button.
Let’s take the note G2 for example.
You can play G using three separate buttons in the left hand:
Two of these buttons require that you push the bellows to produce the note.
The third option however is produced by pulling the bellows.
So, if you have a phrase that would achieve a smoother sound by being played entirely on the pull/draw for example, you can use the G on the outer row (which is played by pulling the bellows).
Most concertina players will do this intuitively to some level or another, but Noel Hill really thinks about each note and phrase he plays. His attention to detail is unrivalled.
Watch his performance below and see if you can identify any of the places where he opts for alternative fingerings:
Why Does Noel Hill Favour Cross-Fingering?
By reducing the frequency of the push/pull change of direction of the bellows, the player can shape the phrases differently, changing the emphasis on certain notes and allowing the tune to flow more freely, in a less choppy manner than traditional, older style concertina playing.
While the idea itself is simple, it can require a lot of thought to execute well. Most concertina players are grounded in home row fingering and can struggle with the change.
There’s no right or wrong when it comes to either system of playing however. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Much like with the differing systems of playing the button accordion, it comes down to personal preference.
Cross-fingering requires a lot of foresight and preparation. You really have to think ahead and it can take some time before it becomes instinctive. In the early stages you may have to map out a tune to plan where your fingers should be placed.
As I’ve mentioned however, it allows great scope for shaping musical phrases. It also frees up certain fingers for playing chords and certain embellishments.
Noel’s Iconic Sound
Noel’s sound is truly unique and instantly identifiable. His cross-fingering method is one of the biggest contributing factors.
It allows him to explore the full potential of the music and to shape tunes in a way that reflects his own vision.
When it comes to phrasing, Noel is hugely influenced not only by the sound of the uilleann pipes but of the fiddle. He succeeds in replicating both the smooth, flowing sound of these instruments and the rhythmic bark of which they are capable.
While his unique cross-fingering method allows him to do this, it is also his unrivalled musical ear which helps him achieve this impressive feat.
Another contributing factor to Noel’s iconic sound is his use of chords.
Noel typically plays chords which omit the third. The third dictates whether a chord is major (happy) or minor (moody/sad). These open chords, without the third, are neither major nor minor and create a more ambiguous modal sound.
This gives more freedom to the tonality of the tune. Noel is not dictating the sound according to the rules of a major or minor key, but instead creating a free, more open sound, shaped by the tune itself. This is essentially the musical meaning of the word modal.
The Coveted Instruments
Like most masters of their chosen instrument, Noel does not limit himself to owning or playing just one instrument. He instead owns an array of exquisite concertinas including models by Wheatstone, Lachenal and John Dipper.
Noel has previously stated that he owns three Wheatstone Linota concertinas (as though owning one wasn’t enviable enough!). In addition to these three beauties he also plays a Lachenal Anglo Concertina and a County Clare miniature by concertina maker John Dipper.
Noel plays concertinas in a variety of keys including the standard C/G but also in A/D and Ab/Eb. The Ab/Eb model in particular produces great clarity and sweetness. You can hear him play it in the video below:
For those looking to pick up one of Noel’s coveted instruments I have good news and bad.
Let’s start with the good. These vintage concertinas do occasionally come up for sale – in fact, we’re even lucky enough to have some of these beautiful vintage concertinas for sale in our shop right now!
Take a look at our full range of vintage and antique concertinas, or head straight for this Wheatstone Linota or Lachenal 30 Key.
If you’d like to know more about any of our concertinas, especially those in our vintage range, please contact me by emailing [email protected]. I’m always happy to talk concertinas!
The bad news for some is that some of these vintage concertinas come with a hefty price tag. If they’re out of your price range however, don’t despair. There are many high quality affordable alternatives available.
Find Your Own Magic Concertina
Why not check out my blog post on The Top Five Concertinas Under $2500? It’s a great place to start for some inspiration and advice on high quality, affordable concertinas.
You’ll see I’ve listed the Phoenix Concertina as a suitable alternative for intermediate players. This 30 key concertina comes in C/G tuning with the option of either a matt black or natural wood finish. It comes with either Wheatstone or Jeffries layout – though, if you’re looking to emulate Noel Hill and his cross-fingering method, you should opt for the Wheatstone layout.
This is a well-crafted instrument that promises to bring your playing to the next stage. It’s ideal for those who might not be at quite the same level as the concertina master himself and want to improve their skills on a durable, highly responsive instrument.
Then, you can slowly build your own concertina collection before investing in the concertina of your dreams. Which, let’s face it, for us concertina lovers is pretty much every concertina out there!

Film: Ever So Much to Say in ‘Non-Fiction’
May 3 and May 10
The Parisians at the center of Olivier Assayas’s latest romp, “Non-Fiction,” like to read and write. They also like to banter, cajole, debate and spar — about the state of literature and the evolution of publishing, the printed page and the digital realm, the timelessness of the letter and the art of the tweet.
“Non-Fiction” sets the stage with a mopey novelist, Léonard Spiegel (Vincent Macaigne), controversial for drawing on his real-life celebrity passions, and his suave editor, Alain Danielson (Guillaume Canet), who is fed up with the name-checking and exploitation, and refuses to publish his new manuscript. All the while, Alain is oblivious to the fact that his actress wife, Selena (a winking Juliette Binoche), has been having an affair with Léonard for six years.
Alain, after all, is distracted: increasingly anxious about the changing industry, he is seduced out of middle-age complacency by Laure (Christa Théret), the young, hyperarticulate head of digital transitioning at his publishing house. And in no time, Léonard, Alain, Selena and Laure find their words — and their bedsheets — a tangled mess.
“Non-Fiction” opens on Friday, May 3, in New York and May 10 in Los Angeles, followed by a national rollout. KATHRYN SHATTUCK
Pop Music: Cher at Barclays Center
May 2; ticketmaster.com
There are pop stars, and there are pop supergiants. With a music career going back nearly six decades, award-winning appearances in films alongside Meryl Streep, Nicolas Cage and others, and recent recognition by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Cher — with whom the world has long been on a first-name basis — certainly qualifies for the latter category.
Lately, the singer has stepped back from original music to pay homage to some Swedish pop phenoms whose longevity rivals her own. Last fall, she released a studio album, “Dancing Queen,” made up entirely of ABBA songs, and appeared in the film “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” the sequel to the ABBA jukebox musical “Mamma Mia!” Cher has taken her tribute on the road with her “Here We Go Again” tour, which stops in Brooklyn on Thursday night. Expect this 72-year-old to perform a handful of covers, like “Waterloo” and “S.O.S.,” as well as her own classics, like “Believe.” OLIVIA HORN
Art: The Can-Can in Color
Through Aug. 4; mfa.org
An argument could be made that our image-obsessed celebrity culture reached its aesthetic peak more than a hundred years ago in Paris. Color lithography was a fresh new process, and the walls of Montmartre were plastered with graphic advertisements for music-hall dancers, many of them designed by a louche aristocrat and prolific artist named Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901). His way with a silhouette — the knack he had of capturing a person’s whole character and affect in the shape of a nose or chin — let him add unparalleled depth and specificity to flat, Japanese-style pictures that read clearly from down the street. Mounted by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in collaboration with the Boston Public Library, “Toulouse-Lautrec and the Stars of Paris” includes hundreds of the paintings, posters and lesser-known drawings in which the artist immortalized the night life that has inspired many an English and American daydream. Theater: ‘42nd Street,’ on the Big Screen, Briefly
May 1; fathomevents.com
“By tomorrow night, I’ll either have a live leading lady or a dead chorus girl.” Such a delectably bloodless pronouncement, and when the director Julian Marsh utters it in “42nd Street,” only 36 hours remain before the opening of his musical “Pretty Lady” on Broadway. That’s all the time the young triple threat Peggy Sawyer has to learn the part after the star, Dorothy Brock, is injured.
Lavish glamour and bounteous tap rightly wowed critics at the recent revival of the show in London’s West End, directed by Mark Bramble, one of its writers, who died in February. Now American audiences can catch that production on hundreds of big screens across the country, in a one-day event on Wednesday, May 1. Starring Clare Halse as Peggy, Bonnie Langford as Dorothy and Tom Lister as Julian, it’s also coming soon to the streaming service BroadwayHD, with the exact date to be announced. Classical Music: Young Musicians at Carnegie
May 1 and 2; carnegiehall.org
If Michael Tilson Thomas’s work with the San Francisco Symphony became less adventurous in his final years as music director there, it may be because he already had the New World Symphony available as a kind of musical playground. The Miami-based orchestral academy for young musicians arrives at Carnegie Hall this week to perform two programs that insightfully balance the old and the new, as part of Tilson Thomas’s curation of Carnegie’s Perspectives series. Wednesday’s concert features Yuja Wang in Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 5 and Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, but also the New York premiere of “Fountain of Youth,” a new work by Julia Wolfe. Perhaps more intriguingly, Thursday’s program features Wang as well as the soprano Measha Brueggergosman in rarely heard music composed by Tilson Thomas himself. WILLIAM ROBIN
TV: Innocence Lost in ‘At the Heart of Gold’
May 3; hbo.com
“Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” When that sentence — written by Larry Nassar — was read aloud during his sentencing for multiple counts of sexual abuse, courtroom spectators gasped.
“The line really says it all,” Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said later about Nassar, the former doctor for U.S.A. Gymnastics and Michigan State University. “He has no respect for women.”
Pain. Outrage. Incomprehension. And finally, hope: Those are the emotions Erin Lee Carr churns up in her documentary chronicling the abuse Nassar inflicted on victims in the guise of therapy — and the inaction of parents, coaches and officials who chose not to believe them. Or not to care. More than 150 women spoke at his sentencing hearing; the number of accusers exceeds 250.
The survivors in “At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal” are steadfast and brave — among them, Rachael Denhollander, the first woman to formally accuse Nassar; the Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman; and Trinea Gonczar, a former gymnast and longtime family friend of Nassar’s who says at the hearing that she was abused by him some 800 times.
“Wow — what have you done?” a tearful Gonczar asks Nassar as she reads her victim-impact statement. It’s the first time in the case that Nassar, who is ultimately sentenced to up to 175 years in prison, cries.
“At the Heart of Gold” will also run May 3-9 at the Laemmle Playhouse in Pasadena, Calif., and May 10-16 at the Cinema Village in New York. KATHRYN SHATTUCK
Dance: Conversing with Merce Cunningham
May 3-4; nyuskirball.org
Just because his 100th birthday has passed — observed with the breathtaking multicity event “Night of 100 Solos” — doesn’t mean we are done celebrating Merce Cunningham or contemplating his vast legacy. The year of his centennial continues with “In Conversation with Merce,” an evening of new works by three contemporary choreographers: Moriah Evans, Mina Nishimura and Netta Yerushalmy.
Presented by N.Y.U. Skirball and organized by Rashaun Mitchell, a former member of Cunningham’s company, the program features each artist exploring her connections to Cunningham. In “Hi, Merce! I Have a Question,” Ms. Nishimura reflects on her time as an international student at the Cunningham school, considering its relationship to her current methods. Ms. Yerushalmy assembles a cast of 17 for a piece inspired by 100 single movements from the Cunningham repertoire. And Ms. Evans works with three male dancers: Cyril Baldy, Silas Riener and Carlo Antonio Villanueva. The program also features Cunningham pieces performed by Keith Sabado and Shayla-Vie Jenkins. Review
Unreality was both fascinating and a bit of a disappointment at the same time. I thought Meadow's psychic powers were interesting enough, with how when she got into her visions to find context clues --- what she calls 'bygones' --- that led to finding Kristie's body in the woods. It didn't read like an extensive, elaborate ability, like say, Eleven from Stranger Things. But Meadow's abilities focused on using them like how a detective uses evidence and hard work to get what they want. She had also used her abilities to discover her mother's murder as a child, which I can't imagine how terrifying and awful that feels. That was why she had built a protective wall around herself not to use her abilities unless absolutely necessary. The Good...Meadow and Nicolas! Book Relationship Goals!  One thing I did like was the relationship between Meadow and her best friend Nicolas. Their slow-burn love story, going from friends to lovers, was possibly the most heartwarming I've ever read. Now granted, Meadow had started looking at Nicolas a certain way a few chapters in, but when he'd finally confessed his feelings for her...it was so sweet!! That scene killed me because Meadow's mind was half-focused on the information she'd found in his room about her powers and finding Brianna. But I was screaming outloud, "Girl!!! Forget about your missing friend right now and focus on this amazing best dude of color who loves you FOR YOU!!" But then, she'd admitted her feelings back later on, and my heart burst. Also, she had noticed certain things about him, like how he doesn't like being called "Nico" or "Nic". Their whole relationship was just so touching and wonderful. The Bad...Meadow basically had to work around her loved ones in order to find and save her friend from danger. One thing I didn't like was how her Uncle George, cousin Leonardo, and her father were so adamant on her not using her abilities to find her friend Brianna, who goes missing. I really did not like how every male is telling Meadow how she should be when she’s the MOST POWERFUL ONE of them all. She has the best power out of all of them --- her father knows of her powers, but he himself does not have them, I think they skipped a generation; Leonardo also has these psychic abilities, but his is more focused on persuasion/compulsion. I didn't think Uncle George had abilities of his own, but he too knows about his niece and son's. But anyway, I still didn't like how Meadow basically had to work around her loved ones in order to find and save her friend from danger. If she wasn't going to learn her abilities from her family who knows the world itself, how was she supposed to learn? Leonardo had taught her some things, but I didn't find him very reliable since his powers are based on persuasion and not visions. Another thing that creeped me out was how Leonardo claimed to see Meadow. I got the feeling that he had maybe liked her as more than family (they're cousins), but that only looked hella creepy and weird, given that they're family. There could have been some kind of incest going on, if Ingrid Seymour could have taken it there. But just the fact that Leonardo had kept pestering Meadow to stay away from Nicolas, I sensed a lot of jealousy from him, which was both creepy and borderline obsessive. The Ending...WHUT...
And that ending...what in the world was that??! It basically ended with Leonardo, Meadow and Nicolas fighting and hang-gliding in the air, Meadow knocked Leonardo out with a rock, with Leonardo's body disappearing. The police couldn't find the body, so they just let Meadow's dad out of jail, Uncle George goes through an easy trial to get life in prison? Huh?! So there's no hint that Leonardo could come back? What if he does come back? Will Meadow's powers become more controlled and stronger? We need answers! This is a short story part of an anthology, so I don't think there will be a companion series or book coming soon. However, I'd be interested to know about what the future holds for Meadow, Nicolas, her father, and Leonardo. Final Verdict: Good but wanted more.
All in all, this was a very good read, but I wish some things were executed and explained more, to make the story come to a full circle. It was pretty character-driven, so if you're into going into the supernatural world that's more internal than external, this would be a good one for you. I have not read the rest of the Marked by Fate anthology box set, but if it's any good, please let me know so we can discuss.  Are you on the Unreality ARC Review tour? TESS lyricist Michael Davies with star Siobhan Dillon, who sings the title role.
TESS, featuring lead vocals by Siobhan Dillon, Tam Mutu and Simon Bailey, will be officially unveiled to the public on Sunday, 5th November 2017.
Written by composer Michael Blore and award-winning playwright Michael Davies, the musical adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s classic Tess of the d’Urbervilles is going live on the show’s website as part of a drive to get the musical fully staged. Followers and fans can sign up to join #TeamTess and be given free access to listen to the whole show.
Set in the Wessex so beloved by Hardy, TESS tells the devastating story of Tess Durbeyfield, daughter of a poor villager who fatefully discovers that they may be related to the ancient aristocratic d’Urberville family. As Tess is sent to seek respectability with her new-found relatives, she embarks on an emotional and dramatic journey that leads to love, loss and ultimate tragedy.
With casting by Anne Vosser, the title role on the album is sung by West End and Broadway star Siobhan Dillon, who first rose to fame in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hunt for a Maria in The Sound of Music. She recently played opposite Glenn Close in Sunset Boulevard at English National Opera and on Broadway and before that appeared as Ellen in Miss Saigon.
Tam Mutu, who plays the villainous Alec d’Urberville, is another Broadway and West End favourite. He alternated the role of the Phantom in Love Never Dies with Ramin Karimloo, starred as Anatoly in Chess and won a clutch of awards as Javert in Les Misérables.
Simon Bailey, who sings the role of Angel Clare, played Bob Gaudio in the West End production of Jersey Boys and is about to embark on the show’s national tour. He’s played Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera, Enjolras in Les Misérables and Pharaoh in Joseph and is a founder member of Teatro, Theatreland’s first supergroup.
Other cast members include Jacqueline Tate, currently playing Mme Thénardier in Les Misérables, James Dinsmore (Adding Machine, Corbyn The Musical) and Olivier Award-winner Nathan Dowling (Jerry Springer The Opera) alongside a chorus and orchestra of professional singers and musicians.
Lyricist Michael Davies said: “It’s been a wonderfully exciting journey to get to this point, and we couldn’t have wished for a better cast and technical team. We’ve had amazing support and encouragement from the likes of Sir Tim Rice and, as he delicately points out, what we now need is a producer. If you see Sir Cameron, do let him know…”
