Ava Gardner by Clarence Sinclair Bull, 1944
"The only kind of makeup she uses is lipstick, and she’s a big perfume addict. Perfume goes behind her ears, on her hair, at the nape of her neck, and in the crook of her elbows. Some days, she changes her perfume two or three times, to fit her moods. She likes “Joy,” “Blue Hour,’ and’ “Mitsouko.” Before a big date, she takes a bubble bath—Elizabeth Arden, usually—but her housecoat is tailored, coolie-style, and she owns only two strapless formals. They’re both black, and she wears them when she has to appear at publicity functions, premieres and so forth."
-Modern Screen magazine, July 1948

Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable in a promo picture for ‘Gone with the Wind’ (1939) // 📸: Clarence Sinclair Bull
Clarence Bull, one of MGM's great staff stills photographers, had an appointment to shoot pre-production stills of Vivien and Gable...Gable showed up and they waited; an hour and a half later, Vivien still hadn't arrived. Gable was 'madder than a hornet.’
'Is this the way they do things over there?' he rasped, meaning England. ‘If it is, I don't want to make this picture with her.’ Bull discovered the appointment had been set up by Selznick's man for two hours later. Gable took a walk, came back and, still in a sour mood, said, 'I still think I'll walk out of this picture with a dame like that!'
‘I quite agree, Mr. Gable,' came a clear voice from the side of the set, where the missing person had been standing, regarding Bull and the star who was to be her Rhett Butler. ‘If I were a man, I'd tell that Vivien Leigh to go straight back to England and fuck herself.’
The anger immediately left Gable. Five minutes after they'd met, Bull recalled, 'she wrapped him round her little finger.'
