the history of animation in a nutshell

Early 1900s: hey what if comic strips could like move?

Late 1910s early 1920s hey what if we mashed this up with live action people?

late 1920s: hey what if this thing had sound?

Early to mid 1930s: hey what if this had people actually talking and also color?

late 1930s: hey you know that super cool movie that one lady animated with paper cut out silhouettes? What if we did that with painted cells? Would people even pay to see that? Never mind it turns out the answer is yes.

1940s: ah shit most of our animators got drafted and/or hate us now cause we weren’t paying them. IT’S PROPAGANDA TIME BABY. Also haha hitler got hit with a mallet and also the most racist depictions of Japanese people ever.

1950s to 1960s : oh what’s this newfangled thing? Television? What if you could air cartoons on it? Oh fuck no I ain’t paying that much to get the charecters to have different backgrounds and for the charecters to like, move fluidly. Also manga and anime are steadily growing more popular.

1970s: (Ralph Bakshi walks into a comics store and finds a furry comic) X rated animated movie? *cue the screams of mothers and their unsuspecting children now being introduced to the revolutionary idea that cartoons don’t equal kids stuff? WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO?

1980s to 1990s: we can have full on animated Broadway musicals? Wait, what do you mean animated movies can count for the Oscar’s? What do you mean now they get their own catagory because the academy still thinks their for babies? Anime and manga are taking off in the west. SWEET JESUS WHAT DRUGS ARE THE JAPANESE ON SHOWING THIS SHIT TO KIDS. But also why is it so fucking good. Maybe some of these aren’t even meant for kids? Wait We can sell toys to kids with cartoons? Wait we can actually put effort into these cartoons on television? The fuck to you mean we can animate in 3D now? What do you mean we can have well animated, well written sitcom shows like the simpsons? What do you mean you can make cartoon charecters say fuck? What drugs are creators at Nickelodeon on? Do I even want to know?

2000s: oh my god, there is this one show that I really like cause it’s really well written and genuinely funny but I can’t talk about it because it’s animated and we all know cartoons are for babies right? Oh look it’s the transformers movie, look how far CGI has evolved so we can make the transformers in a movie.

2010s: holy shit I know these shows are for kids but they’re just well written and have so much meaningful things to say about the world. Wait, it’s cool to like cartoons now? They they have fandoms for this? Fuck yeah I’m in. (Enters one of the most notoriously toxic fandoms of all time) THEY HAVE GAY PEOPLE IN THESE SHOWS NOW? AND COMPLEX EMOTIONAL STORYTELLING? AND ADULT ANIMATED SHOWS CAN BE MORE THAN JUST SITCOMS WITH THE SAME JOKES AND STYLE? WHY IS IT THAT EVERY DISNEY CARTOON SINCE GRAVITY FALLS INCLUDE THINGS THAT GET MORE AND MORE FUCKED UP? WHY DO I FUCKING LOVE IT? WHY THE FUCK DID DISNEY DO THE OWL HOUSE DIRTY LIKE THAT?

2020s: I got this show I wanna pitch but it dosen’t fit into any box that the networks want and also I’m afraid that they’ll just randomly cancel it before I can finish the story I want to tell. Wait, I can just post the pilot on my YouTube channel, see if anybody actually likes this thing I made and just make the show independently? FUCK THE NETWORK! I AM THE NETWORK

It's one thing adding Classic Who (!!!) and the other spin-offs given all of New Who is already on iPlayer, but adding audio descriptions and sign language to apparently everything is wild!

I assume this implies the same things are going to be on Disney+ internationally too? Would make sense to apply the same work on both platforms.

(Although assuming they brought all the features on there too, I assume they'd do sign language again, for both BSL and ASL? I've never used Disney+ so no idea what accessibility options look like on there.)

The Circle of Life goes on

Life has been reborn in the Pridelands as the rain washed away all the filth of Scar's reign. The herds when they found out son of Mufasa had returned, they started migrating back into the kingdom. The hyenas and Scar's loyal followers, Zira and some other lionesses left (Simba exiled them), and the delicate balance of the land was restored.

All went back into a peaceful manner, and Simba couldn't be any happier as his first cub was born, Bahati. He couldn't help but smile proudly whenever he saw the little cub in Nala's protective paws and when he saw Rafiki lifting him up during the presentation ceremony, Simba just got the feeling of something deep in his soul: from that day on, his place in the great Circle of Life was to secure the future of his son, his family and his kingdom - at any cost.

Time just flew by, and Bahati soon grew into a cub. He was now old enough to start to learn all the royal lessons he was supposed to and Simba was glad to pass on the teachings he had learned from his father.

"Good morning, son. I was about to start my morning patrol and I was wondering if you want to join me?"

I don’t know if it’s great or sad that Marvel/Disney has a better shot than Universal Studios at pulling off a Universal Monsters cinematic universe. And to add insult to injury, Marvel’s monster shared universe is also within their other cinematic universe.

While we’re at it, Sony should just turn over Morbius to Marvel Studios. Imagine a version of Morbius done in the same style as Werewolf by Night, that might be enough to save the character’s reputation.

Mickey and Minnie Mouse - Steamboat Willie

Yes, the first time I draw Mickey and Minnie is on the occasion of their birthday, which they celebrate on November 18, because on that date in 1928 they first appeared in the classic short called "Steamboat Willie". The creators are certainly Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks (the one who created Oswald the rabbit).

To be honest, it didn't work out too well for me, and I'm not much of a fan of Mickey, as I would be with other Disney characters like Donald, Goofy, Horace, Oswald, Pete, Pluto and others who are more of my favorites. But Mickey has his strengths in that he is humble (unfortunately his company abused Mickey's character to the point of abnormality), adventurous, goofy, sensitive, but also a smart mouse in his own ways. I love his classic shorts as well as comics especially Floyd Gottfredson and the Italian Topolino comics where he excels, especially when he plays a detective. Certainly his first role in Steamboat Willie is certainly legendary as well as his whistle so I drew it as a redraw from the famous scene where he drives the steamboat. And then there's his girlfriend Minnie who makes her first appearance there. And I drew her character taking inspiration from Mickey Mouse Cartoons by Paul Rudish where she and Mickey turned out to be the best. Certainly their couple remained legendary.

Sorry this didn't turn out the best, I was in a hurry and drew them in color since Steamboat Willie was shown in black and white. Anyway, I hope you like this drawing and it's my gift for Mickey and Minnie Mouse fans.

I hope to devote more time to them in other cartoons and comics where they excel, though not as much as Donald, Goofy, Daisy and the rest of the crew I prefer. Sorry about that and happy belated birthday, Mickey and Minnie!

I started watching AKA Jessica Jones a while ago. Like a long while ago. Never made it past episode 1, season 1 cause this shit is intense. So much so that the last I watched it was in 2016. Trying to binge this and the Daredevil series while also reading the 2005 MAX JJ run -- that was a bad idea. Anyway, here I am on the second episode and jfc this show is way more bonkers than I remember it being.

Disney Classics X Madoka Magica

Okay so I immediately know what some might say “Candy! Aren’t you doing a Bugsnax X Madoka Magica AU? What happened to that?”

Well let me just explain quick

My Bugsnax X Madoka Magica AU isn’t cancelled and it will continue. The reason I’m starting a new one is because I’m not as into Bugsnax as I was previously. I still love it, but it’s hard when it isn’t my current hyper-fixation. I will continue with it, but I wanted to take a break and work on different one that I love just as much. So with that out of the way…

I am now going to combine my Disney classics fixation with my Madoka Magica fixation. I love both of these very much and I’m honestly excited to create this one.

Now to explain some things:

What do I mean by “Classics?”

Now when I say “classics” I’m referring to the main Disney cast and others that fit into the world. This includes characters from Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy Goof to characters like Darkwing Duck and The Rescue Rangers.

How do I picture this?

Now whenever I imagine this story, my mind goes to the characters being human. I can’t really see them in their animal like state when I imagine this story. Sadly I will probably not be illustrating or creating and art, because I do not possess that level of artistic ability and would be uncomfortable drawing it.

Instead I would most likely give character sheets and use reference photos to get my point across. I’d also use things like Picrew and Gacha to somewhat make designs.

Will this be fully written?

Possibly. I’m on a tight schedule with school and with creating a way bigger series. I will mostly be posting about characters and the dynamics I imagine happening with the series.

Will I include original characters?

Again it’s a possibility. I actually have 4 original characters that I made for this Disney world before I made this story. I might have them appear, but I’m not fully sure.

Do I really think people will read this?

Lol no, but I don’t care because it’s fun.

It’s kinda odd to see ppl defend Legendary Disaster’s lion swap in 2022. I get that there were interesting meta reasons behind it but like, we do all remember that “let’s have the paladins match their lions and then switch them all up to match their original 80s placements for the nostalgic appeal” was arguably the genesis for all the worst choices in VLD’s narrative and visual design, right

#Kumari comments #Kumari abuses the tagging system #No shade to people who liked the homage I just think it was an awkward decision that spiraled out into some disastrous storytelling #I guess having an in-universe explanation for the mismatched colors was a cute idea in theory but man did it not work in practice #From a purely aesthetic standpoint it was just plain Bad #and if it'd been planned out properly all the lion cockpits wouldn't have been flooded with a single color #Lance and Keith looked terribly out of place in Red and Black and there's really no getting around that #and all the post-swap discourse basically amounted to 'but when are they gonna swap back tho' bc the expectation to match had been planted #not to mention Everything that went into getting Shiro out of the picture #idk.#sometimes … homages … aren't worth it #If they'd just gone with the original colors/placements from the start and handwaved it as an 'Altean' quirk I could've respected that #it would've felt more like an attempt to respect the sentai tropes from GoLion and less like the producers trying to have it both ways #as-is I just get the impression that they didn't respect the source material /or/ the story they were supposedly trying to tell #It's a lot like the pedantic fuckery in those live-action makes of Disney animated classics ya know?#like 'we want to shamelessly capitalize on your nostalgia but we also need a Logical Reason for xyz fairytale trope'#but perhaps a smidge more earnest bc Voltron isn't/wasn't a huge cash cow on the level of a Disney film #idk. if we're entering a 'VLD was okay actually' era of discourse can someone give me a heads up so I can go scream into a pillow for while?#bc that's not something I wanna be around for
