The Classical Definition of Beauty

It is highly regarded, in fact, often used in almost every occasion, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It is used to express the fact that “the perception of beauty is subjective, and different people have different ideas and views about what is beautiful” (Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, 2018).

I, for one, often use the abovementioned phrase in justifying my idea on what beautiful for me is. Of course my idea on what beautiful is might be regarded as wrong to someone, since we do not have the same perspective. I can provide a good reason that my idea is correct, but he can also argue his/her own supporting ideas.

Arguments often arise from this, and no one could win the debate as there are no accepted evidences to properly justify the idea of one side which makes the idea of the other side wrong. Ultimately, after watching Denis Dutton’s Talk about the “Darwinian Theory of Beauty,” I might change my perspective on what the definition of ‘beauty’ is.

Denis Dutton argued that the reason behind our idea of beauty lies on the evolved human psychology. The two selections proposed by Charles Darwin, namely: natural and sexual, offer the basic explanation as to why we experience and see beauty. People need to survive and reproduce, so techniques that can be regarded as unique and highly pleasuring to the eyes are done. And as living things evolve, they carry or inherit the traits that helped them to survive this world.

Even the old age, people already have the concept of beauty. In order to remain alive, one must be at least made up of statistically pleasing to others’ perspectives or have techniques in order to catch other people’s attention. This still applies nowadays actually. Admit it or not, we look for something catchy at living and non-living things that we see. We judge and mould it in our mind so that we could find its façade and hidden beauties.

Additionally, we have the love for aesthetics. Denis took the olduvai gorge as an example. He said that the retrieved olduvai is somewhat too perfect in the eyes. It is like nobody used it as there are no evidences that it was used for butchering animals. Also, the size is somewhat inappropriate for the proposed work of the said tool. He then hypothesized that the olduvai is used for attracting the opposite sex. The olduvai portrays how skilled a man is, and what he is capable of doing.

The olduvai is an aesthetic. At first glance, it is just a stone shaped like a leaf or tear, but as we look closer, the streaks and moulding speak a thousand beauty. This is an example that we find beauty everywhere, even in the depths of darkness and unknowns of the past. As much as possible, we do not want to call something or someone ‘ugly.’ Instead, we search for its or his/her untarnished beauty inside, if we cannot see it outside. Denis said that we find beauty in something done well, but I do not support this idea of his. We find beauty in everything that we see because that is in our human nature, and even if the beauty is not visible to the eyes, we still look for it everywhere within the subject so as to justify that every living and non-living thing has its/his/her own beauty.

Nonetheless, there is no right nor wrong in defining ‘beauty.’ The definition relies on how our subconscious mind rule on how we perceive things around us. So as like Denis Dutton said, “Is beauty in the eye of the beholder? No. It is deep in our minds.”
