Happy birthday to Mark Kelly, the brilliant keyboard player of Marillion! 🎉🎹 Today we're celebrating his amazing contributions to the band and his incredible talent on the keys.
Did you know that Mark Kelly grew up in Dublin, Ireland, and was originally trained as a classical pianist? He joined Marillion in 1981, and has been a driving force behind their unique sound ever since.
Mark is also a licensed commercial pilot, and has even flown the band's private jet on tour! 🛩️
One of our favorite Marillion songs that showcases Mark's incredible keyboard skills is "The Space" from the album Radiation. This album was released in 1998, and marked a departure from the band's earlier sound with a more alternative and experimental edge.
"The Space" is a hauntingly beautiful song that explores themes of isolation and loneliness, set against a backdrop of atmospheric keyboard textures and soaring guitar solos. It's a true masterpiece, and one of the highlights of Mark Kelly's incredible career.
Join us in wishing Mark Kelly a very happy birthday today, and let's celebrate the amazing music that he's brought to the world with Marillion! 🎂🎶

More from Franz Liszt, Grande Fantasia da Concerto su Temi Spagnoli. Played by Andrea Carcano. One thing I notice with Franz Liszt is that much of his great works were adaptations from pieces by other composers. People can often have a misconception that geniuses conceive “original” material. But we can see that Liszt was inspired by the existing corpus of musical literature, which inspired his own masterful ideas. And this wasn’t limited to the Hungarian genius: having studied a fair bit of Bach’s music, we see the same development from existing ideas. There’s great merit to the idea of copying from the masters, rather than striving to produce something “new”. In order to make your mark, you have to know what already exists and constantly learn.
