Here are 10 things you should know about Adele Jergens, born 106 years ago today. In a 21-year career, she enjoyed success on Broadway and in pictures, radio and television.
We’re approaching the five year anniversary(!) of when I first saw the biopic “Stan & Ollie,” which made me delve into Laurel and Hardy’s work and begin drawing them. Today would be Oliver Hardy’s birthday as well. I’m continuing my almost-annual tradition of redrawing my very first picture of the duo, based on the poignant dance in the final scene of “Stan & Ollie.”
My Laurel and Hardy love has helped me as an artist. Their movies influenced the comedy and timing of my comic strips. Drawing them forced me to break my old habit of drawing everyone with the same body type, so I could start embracing the contrasts that make life so interesting. They served as my gateway to the work of more comedians, all of whom I love, but L&H remain my favorites. I’m glad to have met many other fans from around the world on social media. And I’m honored that many of you have begun to associate them with me!
