Boat people.
Today has been a significant day in the calendar! The sale of our house is complete and we have moved onboard Penelope while we wait for the purchase of our next home to progress.
One last trip to Bodicote to pick up the last of the items to be squeezed into the MG, Martin constantly asking where it would all go, I took a final photo, in the sunshine.
Tumblr media
Then a dash into town to drop the keys off at the Estate Agents and pick up a last few bits of shopping, including a refill of washing up liquid and so breakfast cereal, I will miss Nothing But Footprints but hopefully will find other refill shops on our travels. Back to Penelope to unload and wrap the car up in preparation for out travels and a quick bite to eat, as usual the wind picks up just as we cast off so Martin has to fight the breeze to execute his manoeuvre out of the basin and onto the Oxford canal. We have spent the last five months turning right out of the marina and heading down toward Banbury so it felt strange to turn left and head north.
Tumblr media
A glorious afternoon for cruising, up through Broadmoor, Varney and Ellington locks before we met any traffic coming the other way, and the five Claydon locks were quickly navigated, thanks to the amazing V’Lockies who interrupted their efforts to let water down into the lower pounds to let us climb the 30 feet up towards Fenny Compton. The Fenny Compton tunnel, which was completed in 1777, is no longer a tunnel since the removal of the final section of roof in 1869 but the section is always interesting not least because of how narrow it is and this time we met two boats and on each occasion we were at the narrowest parts!
Todays short cruise ended at a mooring just below The Wharf at Fenny Compton, it’s Friday so we celebrated the house sale with Fish & Chips although they were so busy we were relegated to the garden, luckily the sun remained long enough for us to enjoy our meal before retiring to the the boat for an early night!

Norfolk News 16 April 1864 - reprint of a piece from the Church Times which reads like it could have flowed from the pen of Ignatius himself! The Church Times was established in 1863 and was explicitly pro-ritualist. In all likelihood Ignatius or one of his close followers had a hand in the production of this rather sycophantic article.
Points to note include careful mention of Ignatius being mindful of his status as deacon - the Bishop of Norwich was in no mood for his bullshit, especially since the Rev. Drury had been fined £5 at magistrates bench for hitting a parishioner in the head with a red hot poker when he interrupted some sort of pseudo-mass being lead by Ignatius at Claydon - and early reference to the elusive Brother Augustine...
  THE MONKS ON ELM HILL
A correspondent of the Church Times, writing from Norwich on the Benedictine services during Holy Week, remarks that to a stranger unacquainted with the under-current of religious life in the capital of East Anglia, the first thought arising in his mind, if he viewed from the terrace of its castle the thickly studded towers and steeples of the 35 (within the walls) parish churches, and lofty spires of its cathedral, would be, "What an evidence of church life must this city present!"
Here, however, the proverb, he suggests, holds remarkably true, and 'the nearer the church the further from God;' for with but few exceptions, the church doors are opened only one day in the week, and even then in some instances only half of the day. It was therefore matter for rejoicing that "in the very heart of this bursting corruption--in a parish whose priest leaves the spiritual interests of his parishioners mainly to the visits of a scripture reader - in a parish where a meeting house opposite the church gates tells its attendants by hundreds while the church can scarcely count tens -in a parish such as this, and alas, there are others like cared for--a ruined mansion of a former city official houses the Brothers of the Anglican order of St. Benedict, whose austere life rises up a daily witness before God in this city of corruption and living death."
The writer then gives an outline of the services celebrated by the brethren during Holy Week, commencing with Palm Sunday, when the ancient and significant Procession of the Palms was revived. The Superior being only a Deacon, could not, of course, bless the palm branches in the strictest sense of the word, but he repeated some of the ancient collects of benediction, and then distributed them to the brothers, the members of the third order, and the congregation in succession, all kneeling with great reverence before the altar. A procession was then formed, headed by one of the brethren carrying a large processional crucifix, veiled and attended by two acolytes in scarlet cossacks, sashes, and cottas, bearing lighted candles.
The brethren of the order who followed, carried the banners of "The Man of Sorrows," "The Blessed Virgin," "The Sacred Heart," "The Cross," and then came the Prior and Superior, preceded by two thurifers swinging incense, and followed by most of the congregation with palms in their hands. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, the services were at six, nine, eleven, four, and six to nine o'clock, with frequent lectures by the Superior and Brothers Augustine and Bernard, and at each service a constant succession of congregations attended. Among the working classes (continues the writer) the Superior is most deeply venerated, for they find in him a clergyman who is ever ready to advise and counsel, and whom no earthly or domestic ties prevent from constant offices of spiritual comfort.
They are impressed, too, by his self-devotion and child-like earnestness, and many are the simple tokens of respectful love which these poor, and many of the richer portion of his hearers, have left as nameless offerings. At six o'clock, on Thursday evening, the ceremony of "washing the feet" was performed, followed by solemn vespers, at which the Superior delivered a most earnest and touching sermon on the Lord's agony in the garden and his desertion by his disciples. Many cases could be enumerated of careless youths and maidens, on the high road to ruin through the utter failure of the parochial system to touch them or even to know them, brought to Christ through this Benedictine Mission, and now become zealous and devoted followers of the truths they have learnt. Good Friday and Easter Day services are next described, "The Church of St. Lawrence," continues the article, "is a most awkward one for any high being choked up with pews; but un-Catholic as is its appearance, the daily sacrifice is now offered in it, and the brothers, or some of them, are now always present.
The rector would most gladly restore his church, but he is a poor man, and by thus giving the monks and others who can value so high a privilege, the opportunity of daily communion, has drawn down upon himself all the crushing vengeance of the Norwich Board of Guardians to dismiss him from the office he holds as Chaplain to the Workhouse. But we doubt not, that by God's help, he will manfully continue what he has so well begun, and to his praise it shall be told in future days that he took away here the reproach which rests upon the church of England." In conclusion, the writer says - "The Brotherhood wants help to complete its purchase of the roof that covers it; to fit for use its now else uninhabitable portions; it wants help for daily food support for its chapel, that the mission may be continued- it wants much alms. O, readers, God is not unrighteous, that he will forget your works and labor that proceedeth of love; which love he has showed for his name's sake; who have ministered unto his saints and ye do minister!"

23 June 2022: “I stole it off Bury Co-op”: the story of Tesco Clubcard.
Tumblr media
On a store visit to a Co-op store in Bury in 1990, Tesco’s then marketing director Terry Leahy got the idea for Clubcard.
“And, being modest again, he gives the Co-Op credit for what is commonly known as being a Terry Leahy invention - the Tesco Clubcard, which arrived in 1995. He says: ‘It wasn't a new idea. I stole it off Bury Co-Op. There had always been a dividend stamp, but Bury Co-Op tried to make it electronic. There's nothing new under the sun. All the good ideas are already out there.’"
And from Scoring Points (2008):
“In 1990 [Leahy] had his interest grabbed by the news that the Co-op in Bury was experimenting with a loyalty scheme based on a plastic card with a magnetic stripe on the back. The Co-op was still awarding its customers the Co-op dividend but now, in return, it would be able to collect information on that store’s customers’ shopping habits. [...] ‘If they can do it in one shop in Bury’, he said to his marketing team, ‘why can’t we?’”
A good reminder to encourage experiments - there’s unrealised potential in every organisation, sometimes in plain sight. That story about about Clubcard comes from this very entertaining retelling, which has loads of good quotes like:
"What scares me about this," [Tesco CEO Ian] MacLaurin said, "is that you know more about my customers in 3 months, than I know in 30 years."
And:
“[rival Safeway’s ABC] pilot team could see what they were sitting on. But they lacked [...] senior leaders who could see how powerful the customer data benefits were. They just saw it as a loyalty scheme”
So Tesco became a data harvesting pioneer, launching Clubcard in February 1995. Almost exactly a decade later Amazon Prime would launch.
Cradle to cradle stores
Steeple Claydon Co-op launches with innovation built into the design to cut carbon and energy use:
“Co-op has worked to adopt a ‘cradle to cradle’ approach for the build which will see between 80%-100% of the foundations, superstructure, glazing, cladding and insulation materials used in the construction of the store fully demountable and able to be used again. Sheep wool is used for insulation and solar panels are to be installed on the roof. The build also includes an external living wall built into the design which is made from recycled car battery housings, and can be irrigated through rainwater and shown to reduce noise, create habitats for wildlife and reduce pollutants occurring in the air through particle capture. The store also re-cycles the energy used by its fridges to heat the store and provide its hot water requirements.”
Related: Co-op’s sustainability report (pdf).
Warehousing and recessions
Amazon is subletting about 5% of the warehouse space it added during the pandemic. Unlike inflation and interest rates, this probably doesn’t signal a recession - more that covid planning was tricky. And Prologis (one of Amazon’s landlords) is buying space, which suggests that they see the delivered/online shopping trends continuing. (What kind of warehousing is needed during recessions? Online shopping returns? Self storage?)
Elsewhere in commercial property, Government minister Nadhim Zahawi's wife has added a Co-op superstore to the couple's £100 million property empire - not the shop but the building it’s in :).
Layoffs.fyi is a website that tracks redundancies in technology companies. The food ones are mostly delivery companies - a tricky business to get right.
Community ownership
Ripple Energy run renewable energy co-ops. You pay in an amount that’s based on your current electricity bill, they get a wind farm built, and your “return” will be in reduced energy bills for 25 years (the life of the wind farm). You could think about this as a way to make your home run on greener energy, or a way to help the UK build out renewables and meet its carbon targets. Or even as a financial “hedge”: a way to insure yourself against rising energy bills - the discount increases if energy prices increase. Their next project.
Community ownership of a pub can restore a feeling of pride in place, and allow people to transform a closed business into a thriving community hub - but fewer pubs are community-owned in cities, probably because the cost bar tends to be higher.
25 years ago, the community living on Eigg bought the island - quite a story. Scotland now has a community “right to buy” for sustainable development.
Design consultancy ustwo is now employee-owned as well as being a B corp.
More on co-ops: Co-operative news, and Power to change which supports community ownership schemes.
Sentient chatbots
A Google engineer reckons that an AI chatbot he worked with has developed genuine sentience. He had campaigned for LaMDA to be treated as an employee rather than as property worker and talked about it publicly, which Google didn’t like. The chatbot displayed (or simulated) vulnerability, and they developed friendship - which may have been a factor in his assessment.
There is an obvious question about how you’d prove that something is sentient in an era of solid machine learning language models: language-centric tests may be insufficient - the transcript of their interviews feels simultaneously fluent and scripted. Also: at what point should non-humans earn personhood and rights? Another question might be about the extent to which humans *want* to believe that things are sentient:
“One implication of Lemoine’s story is that a lot of us are going to treat AI as sentient well before it is, if indeed it ever is. I sometimes call this forthcoming future “The Age of Oracles.” That is, a lot of humans will be talking up the proclamations of various AI programs, regardless of the programs’ metaphysical status. It will be easy to argue the matter in any direction — especially because, a few decades from now, AI will write, speak and draw just like a human, or better.”
See also: The soul of a new machine learning system (paywalled), whose title references a deservedly famous book of computing history.
Emissions reporting
Measuring our carbon output | Scottish Enterprise Design blog - this is good: Scottish Enterprise has created a dashboard to estimate the carbon emissions caused by its biggest websites.
However, emissions reporting isn’t consistent in the public sector: National Audit Office warns public sector emissions reporting is a mess.
Various things
“Nothing could have prepared me for turning away patients. I believe much of it could have been solved if we just had a few more doctors.” - What I saw working undercover at a GP surgery.
Morrisons raises pay as stores battle for staff - UK's fourth largest supermarket says it will pay a minimum of £10.20 per hour to its workers.
How to make procurement docs people understand - to create healthy competition among a more diverse pool of providers, the Wales Centre for Digital Public Services has started to rethink the design of the documents we use to procure goods and services.
Event: Call for papers - Manchester Tech Festival, 17-21 October 2022.
Iceland has horses that will respond to work emails on a giant keyboard while you’re on holiday. I will be back in the office on Wedneighsday, etc.
