My first hate comment...
I've been writing fanfiction ever since I was 6 years old, and publishing ever since around the age of 13 or so, which brings my total time as a writer to nearly 12 years (I'm turning 18 in a little bit under two months, which marks the beginning of the 13th year of writing). Despite this amount of time I've spent scribbling away my ideas in notebooks and on computers, I only received my first hate comment four days ago.
It was on a crosspost of one chapter of a crossover fanfic from Wattpad to a new Tumblr blog; it was roughly 44,000 words. The reasoning for such a length was because I had a word goal of around 8,000,000 words in mind for the entire fanfiction as a whole, and as I'd originally posted to Wattpad (which has a 200 chapter limit), I wanted to evenly divide the word count between 198 chapters (leaving me with two chapters to post an author's introduction and an author's conclusion). I did have other comments complaining about this fic's length on Tumblr, but this one...I don't know how to describe it. It definitely felt kind of unsettling to me.
To directly quote the comment, "@[InsertOtherCommenter'sUsername] yeah seriously it took me probably a minute or so to scroll through all of this. OP, I would suggest deleting this post and then re-posting it with an undercut. It would really help everyone else looking through the [fandom] tag."
I don't know what it is about the comment...but it did come off as pretentious, rude and demanding to me. The vibe I was getting from this comment was that its author believed he/she/they were the only ones allowed to post to the fandom's tag. Like...the tag is there for everyone to post to, and people shouldn't be telling others what they can and can't post. My fanfiction wasn't breaking any site-wide rules, as far as I know. The fact that they spent only a minute scrolling through something that would take ages to read tells me that they didn't skim over the content to check that it was a fanfiction for the fandom, and immediately assumed it was irrelevant spam based on its length. But that's just my interpretation of the comment; it may be different for others.
After reading the comment this morning, I felt pretty shitty. Even twelve hours on, I still feel like trash. I didn't eat much today because I had this anxious feeling in my stomach, which I still have as I'm typing this. I was planning on writing the next chapter of my story today, but my friend told me about the comment this morning (she found it; I didn't have my notifications turned on for Tumblr), and I just feel guilty looking at the word processing interface of my story now. Like what I'm doing is wrong...like it's criminal to even be thinking of writing my story.
I'm considering staying off Tumblr because 1) I don't feel very welcome at all, 2) I'm relatively new to Tumblr; I have no idea what an undercut is, and 3) AO3 doesn't have any comments on it yet (I don't mind as it's better than hate comments); also, Wattpad has an overwhelmingly positive comments section for the same fanfiction, which is one of the main reasons I like the site. Say what you will about its lack of quality, but people are supportive and kind over there.
At the end of the day, I know it's just a mean comment, but I still feel pretty horrible and anxious. I feel like this is going to put me off writing for at least a week, if not a long time. r/fanfiction, do you guys have any tips on resilience in regards to this sort of thing?
Thanks, Clazey.
