Batman: The Animated Series - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
The Clock King
Temple Fugate was a man who ardently believed in maintaining a strict schedule for time/task management. He was the founder and president of a consultancy specializing in time efficiency. His firmed was sued and he was at risk of losing everything he had worked for. On the advice of his colleague, Hamilton Hill, Fugate broke with his struct schedule to try to relax. This led to a mishap ultimately resulting in Fugate missing his hearing and losing his company. A distraught Fugate became convinced that Hill had purposefully sabotaged him.
Several years later, Hamilton Hill had been elected Mayor of Gotham and Fugate reemerged. He now called himself ‘The Clock King’ and was set on destroying Mayor Hill as revenge. Fugate had perfected his study of time, planning and schedule to such a point that he was able to perform feats that bordered on the super human.
The Clock King initially stymied Batman’s efforts to apprehend him and he nearly succeeded in killing Mayor Hill. Batman managed to triumph however and save the mayor. Fugate appeared to perish in the battle but his body was never found.
Fugate indeed survived and went into hiding, acting as a butler to a brilliant and reclusive scientist named Dr. Wakati. The scientist had built an ingenious device that could momentarily freeze time within a sphere where the person holding the device was unaffected. In brief, the device effectively enabled a person the power of super speed.
Fugate stole this device and The Clock King returned. Once more, he set his sights on bringing down Mayor Hill as well as garnering revenge on Batman. Dr. Wakati provided Batman and Robin a similar device that enabled them to defeat The Clock King and Fugate was sentenced to life in prison at Stonegate Penitentiary. His sentenced was later secretly furloughed by the governmental agent, Amanda Waller, who assigned Fugate the role of chief strategist of her covert ‘Task Force X’ squad.
Actor Alan Rachins provided the voice for The Clock King, with the villain first appearing in the fourteenth episode of the first season of Batman: The Animated Series, ‘The Clock King.’
