so i talked about Din being so ungodly unpredictable, and after digging a bit deeper beneath the surface of The Mandalorian season1 and 2, i think now i know why.

To the surprise of absolutely noone, Din Djarin is a rogue!! He's a rogue character, that's the foundation of his personality, at any point of his characterization he's designed to stray from structure and to undermine it.

But he's also a knight! and this introduces a very intriguing and fascinating conflict at the heart of his character: the duality of honor, and how he orients himself towards that specific value. He's a knight and a knight is bound by honor and servitude; but in order to save his honor he has to choose what and whom he serves at different points of the narrative, and he has to disobey in order to obide by his honor. A rogue character by definition is the least honoring person, a knight is most honorable. So the heart and the lungs of Din Djarin's characterization is his struggle with servitude and where his values lie, and it's never "this" or "that"; he's constantly switching between rogue and knight in the bat of eyelash, just when you think he's bound to code he abandons mission and when he's supposed to stray he stays and binds himself to a child.

I think introducing him in the position of a king is the most outrageous and hilarious plot twist, because narrative wise, all three archetypes of the Rogue, the Knight and the King have in common the conflict of honor, while the King is most bound to obedience and the Rogue is least concerned with it. So i'm actually quite curious now to know where they'll take season 3 Din Djarin, simply because this is such hefty faceted dynamic and it's quite frankly very ambitious to tackle, we haven't had an archetypal story this intricate in star wars since, well, the original trilogy.

1957-1959

In the early part of 1957, it became apparent to everyone on Sodor that British Rail was serious about their modernization plan. Whole classes of steam locomotives were being scrapped and replaced with diesel, even some that were not even ten years old. The engines were being sent to Sodor for trial for express duties and branch line work.

Fortunately, Sir Topham was a step ahead of them. He had his entire fleet brought in for maintenance, and the crews at Crovan's Gate worked tirelessly to get everyone into prestige condition. Despite the challenge ahead, the engines took this time to become acquainted with members of the NWR that they hadn't met. Toby and Edward especially got along well, being the two old "men" of the railway. Even Charles Hatt was in the workshop helping to oil joints and clean the engines.

By the time BR came for inspection, the entirety of the NWR fleet was in exceptional order. The inspector couldn't find a single thing wrong with any of the engines. Annoyed, he dismissed the engines for their duties.

British Rail was not pleased that their attempts of modernization were bouncing off the Sudrians. So, they kept bringing engines to Sodor for trials, express engines, branch line engines, freight engines, but to no avail. Nothing would deter Sir Topham from his "antiques".

The Sudrian engines realized quickly how lucky they were. While some like Edward and Toby had outlived their siblings already, however, some like James and Gordon were held in grief from the loss of their brothers and sisters. But they pressed on.

BR demanded that if Sir Topham was going to keep his engines, they had to adhere to the British Rail numbering and paint scheme. So, all 7 engines were repainted. Gordon was repainted in express blue, Henry and James in "Brunswick" green. Thomas, Percy, and Toby (only his side skirts) were painted in BR black while Edward was mistakenly painted in BR lined black.

In 1959, Sodor was becoming an oddity, and the public was well aware. More and more people came to see the "last bastion of steam", increasing the workload, and soon the NWR was in another traction crisis. It became apparent that a new engine was needed. BR was more than eager to send a diesel, but Sir Topham wanted something a little more reliable. So, BR agreed to send a Caledonian 652 to help out.

Later that month, the ship carrying the engine docked in Tidmouth harbor. However, when Sir Topham visited the harbor to meet the engine, he was shocked to see two 652s instead. He had only ordered one, but the twins couldn't "remember" who was who. Annoyed, Sir Topham Hatt decided that they both could help out, but he would decide who to keep and who to send back to Scotland.

The twins were very affable with the rest of the Sudrian engines. They portrayed themselves as calm and laid-back. However, they both feared for who would be sent away. Duck especially found Donald to be the more personable twin. He was a flirt with everyone. Duck had never seen an engine so open about their feelings before. It made Duck question himself.

Donald and Douglas were an immense help as more and more steam enthusiasts came to the island. Many were interested to see the older members of the NWR's fleet. Edward was a popular request for excursion trains and enthusiast trains became one of his main jobs.
