I wanted so badly to talk to you. We'd gone from speaking every day to radio silence. What could I say though? Nothing I wrote felt right. Besides, did you even want to hear from me? Anyways, it felt selfish of me to reach out for my own comfort. All I could do is hold my breath and find my own kind of closure.
Will we speak again? // 9.30.2021

CLOSURE BY TAYLOR SWIFT  I know I'm just a wrinkle in your new life Staying friends would iron it out so nice Guilty, guilty, reaching out across the sea That you put between you and me But it's fake and it's oh so unnecessary

closure is an important song in Taylor’s discography because it validates that we can move on from things that hurt us without forgiving or partially reconciling with the people who caused us pain. There’s a strong tendency for people to encourage us to “forgive and forget” or to “be the bigger person” and “take the high road” which is sometimes appropriate but other times actually is kind of harmful in many instances, because why should we be pushed to forgive people who caused us intense pain? Why do they deserve exoneration?
Maybe they don’t deserve to be forgiven, especially if their apology feels disingenuous or suspiciously convenient for their image. Maybe they only have earned to be forgotten. Sure, sometimes people screw up and acknowledge that and deserve a second chance. But sometimes people don’t earn that, sometimes their actions cut too deep and left too gnarly of a scar. Sometimes they show us they haven’t changed.
Sometimes moving on and healing from a wound means we don’t excuse someone’s choices or accept their excuses. ‘Closure’ validates that path. 💛

For the most part, listening to evermore is like being wrapped up in a thick, handwoven blanket, sitting by the fireplace with a hot drink in your hands, and wondering why so many good things have to end. but then “no body, no crime” comes on and you evily smirk at the wild, blazing embers before you that are burning your blood soaked clothes and think, “oh yeah, that’s why”
