28. German Christmas Market

A/N: Thank you for giving me another reason to write for this very specific prompt. I did not anticipate for this to get so long, nor for the Deutsche Bahn to become a major point of contention, but I thought it would be funny and very authentically German. Also I got stranded at a train station on the way home for the holidays, so I had some time.

It had been a nice idea initially, going to the Christmas market for a date. Have some overpriced hot punch and sugary food, look at nice lights and decorations and hold hands. All that preferably in the next biggest town over, where every second booth wasn’t run by students from uni you both knew. Going to a Christmas market and on a date on top of that was to get a break from daily life, not to get yet again reminded that the person who was making Crêpes for you still hadn’t done their part of the group presentation that was due in two days. Last years Christmas market had not been fun.

This year, the big obstacle would be even getting there. It had snowed a day ago and while snow was rare and it settling for long was even rarer, the time Hange and you arrived at the train station of your small town, everything still looked like winter-wonderland.

“I swear the app said our train wasn’t affected.” Hange’s glasses were foggy from their breath, scarf pulled up to their nose. “You saw it too, right? When I checked before we left?” They asked you before returning to their phone, checking the following connections only to find out that they were all cancelled as well, while you were half looking over, half leaning on their shoulder, huddled together against the cold wind blowing over the platform. Dressed in thick coats with various layers underneath you still felt them shiver slightly.

You wrapped your arms around their shoulders, trying to give a little bit of reassurance before Hange would start to blame themself for not having anticipated this specific situation. Because it wasn’t their fault, neither was it of the people working for the German railway, they must be extra stressed thanks to that train-wreck of an infrastructure that worked really good except when it didn’t. And sometimes that felt like more often than not. The German railway services did not like winter-wonderland.

“At least we’re not stuck somewhere else this time.” Upon voicing your thought, you felt Hange shake with giggles. “What is it? Was that so funny?”

They looked up at you, still in your arms, pulling down their scarf so you could see their wide grin. A small cloud of condensed breath escaped them. “I just remembered the time we went to the Aquarium on our second date and had dinner after. And then on the way back back home, we hat to sit in the train for two hours in the middle of nowhere because someone got stuck in the toilet cabin.”

“See, it could be worse.” You commented with a small chuckle. It should not have been so funny, but the way Hange told it was.

“Nah, it’s half bad.”, Hange leaned forward, pressing a short kiss to your lips, “As long as a have you. Or no, wait. I’d gladly get stuck at any train station, as long as it’s with you. Or something romantic like that. Also, we still have all afternoon to spend time.”

Their cheeks and nose were tinged slightly pink when they leaned back, although that could be from the cold. Somewhere on another platform, a train was announced. It started snowing again, the kind of big flakes that should only exist in cartoon movies. Still standing at the now empty platform, Hange followed your gaze, taking your hand in theirs.

“You know, we could still try the whole Christmas market date, you don’t have any group presentations this year, have you?”

“Thankfully not.”

“Then let’s just go in, grab some food and make a run for it.”

And who were you to say no to that? Hange grinned, before pulling their scarf up to their nose again, only leaving their yet again clouded glasses and a few stray strands of hair visible between the scarf and beanie.

The latter with its sew-on patch of a long long fish that looked like an eel, but wasn’t quite one (maybe a little bit), wearing a Christmas hat was the latest product of Hange discovering that you could just order stuff like that on the internet. It had “HAPPY PHOLIDAE(S)!” patched under it, a pun that had been settled on as “Fröhliche Weihnachten!” was too long of a saying to fit into a beanie and “Frohes Fest!” didn’t lend itself well to puns with marine species names, scientific or common.

When leaving the train station, the two of you passed more exasperated travellers having gathered around the big display in the main hall that showed the current delays and cancellations.

“I hope they’re not gonna be stuck long.” Hange commented before stepping outside in the cold winter air again.

In typical winter afternoon fashion, the sun nearly set in the short time it took you two to make your way through the increasingly busy pedestrian zone. The closer you got to the Christmas market, the more Christmas-y it got. What had been a few front store windows with Christmas-Tree and snow themed décor slowly turned into lights being spun on ropes above the street and a random tree here and there. Hange slipped on some mushy snow leftovers from earlier that day when pointing them out and while you were fully prepared to go down with them by the way their hand still clasped onto yours, Hange caught themself rather quickly.

“You alright?” They asked you as if you were the one who just stumbled.

Gently bumping against their shoulder, you told them not to worry about you too much, just as the first wooden booth came into view. It was built to look like a small cosy hut with a bunch of Christmas decorations and lights thrown over it. Steam rose from the warmth of the Crêpe stoves that were hidden behind a stack of nutella jars. Next to it a booth that sold candles from plain to giant angel motives, as well as the kind of preciously self made ones that seemed to be too pretty to light.

Hange naturally gravitated to the candle booth to look for something fish related, strategically scanning the display from left to right while you looked from the other side. It was a game, a habit by now, to just look for fish related stuff wherever you went and help Hange search, even if you didn’t end up buying anything.

The same always counted for you, Hange had made it a habit of bringing little things around that either reminded them of you, they thought were funny or you’d like. With their associative way of thinking, that could either be something you didn’t know you needed or liked before and now cherished it deeply, or a package of napkins for a reason you didn’t really understand but that made perfect sense for them.

“Hm.” Hange brought their free hand to their chin, leaning slightly forward over what could be a starfish shaped candle or just a Christmas Star. “No, that’s not it.”

You hadn’t found anything either. Yet Hange didn’t dwell on it long, looking back at you instead.

“Let’s be basic and get some Crêpes with nutella then. I’m paying.”

“I’m paying the next time then.”

“Alright alright.” Hange laughed as they pulled you to the other booth with them, ordering and paying for the two Crêpes. The awkward waiting time and shuffling around to somehow signal you two had already ordered and no this wasn’t the start of the queue, everyone leave us alone please while we hope nobody will try to make small talk with us, just waiting for the food, thank you very much. It was worth the freshly made food though.

“We should get roasted almonds or something, we could take that home.” Hange suggested, munching on the Crêpes after some time to cool down on the way to the central market place by the church where most of the Christmas market was located.

It had a look of a small village with all the small wooden huts, yet in contrast to an actual village, there was a lot going on. Lights, decorations, the constant smell of food, sweet and savoury, Christmas songs blurring with the voices of people. A busy place that was mainly visited by families with their toddlers or friend groups of various ages from school to middle aged. The small town was too small and the Christmas market too insignificant to attract any buses with old people from across the country.

“Alright.” Hange took your hand again after quickly finishing their Crêpe, keeping you close as you tried your best not to get separated in the busy lanes. You looked at some of the handiwork displays together, one did woodworking, selling nativity scenes, another sold notebooks and paper works, there was another candle merchant and several booths with jewellery. None of them fish themed. A disappointment. These booths were tucked between the more dominant food booths, most of them selling sweet food and the one giant bratwurst grill in the middle.

After some time, you bought some hot punch for Hange and you in mugs that cost an unusual big pledge on top, but they were yellow and shaped like an old boot and hideous, so money aside, you needed to keep those. With those in hand you retreated to an alley outside, away from the noise and people for a bit.

“I forgot how loud kids can be. And just people. And we didn’t even find anything cool.” With a sigh, Hange rested their head on your shoulder. “At least it’s not as boring as I thought it would be. And we have avoided the booths by people we know.”

You were glad to have taken a break as well, all the intensity suddenly breaking in on you as you leaned against Hange in return. How were they so warm even through the like ten layers of winter coat? Your thoughts were interrupted when Hange lifted their head.

“Let’s just grab some more food and eat somewhere else. I think that’s enough Christmas market for me today.”

“Sounds good to me.” You shifted slightly to have a better look at their face.

“You’re the best, love.”

With these words, Hange pressed another kiss to your lips, soft, gentle, lasting a little longer than the last. The kiss tasted like punch, really sweet and somehow like Christmas. Whether or not it was celebrated, just more quiet hours spend together with the people you loved most.

And, for all the ethical concerns from their employees, America’s tech companies continue making inroads into the military’s procurement budgets. Thus, while Alphabet may have shelved its plans to work on the Pentagon’s controversial Project Maven – a computer vision project that prompted protests among its engineers – it went ahead and formed Google Public Service, an innocent-sounding unit which does offer cloud services to the military. It’s hardly alone. Silicon Valley’s cloud and machine learning capabilities remain crucial to the Pentagon’s vision of building a system to integrate data coming from terrestrial and air sensors – these are no longer limited to radar – from across all branches of the armed forces. The idea is to crunch them with artificial intelligence, so as to mount an effective joint response. To that end, in late 2022 the Pentagon awarded four tech giants – Microsoft, Google, Oracle and Amazon – a $9bn contract to develop the infrastructure for this bold effort (defensescoop.com, 7 December 2022). But, unlike in the old cold-war days, it’s not at all clear how much of this money would trickle down, Keynesian-style, to ordinary Americans. When it comes to AI, the labour costs accrue either to the star engineers – and we are talking hundreds, not millions of them – or to the numerous low-paid contractors who toil to help train the AI models. Most of them are not even in America, with OpenAI relying on contractors in Kenya to prevent ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot, from showing obscene images and text. As for cloud computing, it’s also not clear how its expansion would help. Building data centres is expensive and their positive effects on the economy have yet to be seen. They do tend to drive up the cost of real estate. And the environmental costs of both AI and cloud computing are not trivial. So the multiplier effect of pouring all this money into military AI might be a mirage. So perhaps this Cold War 2.0 would not feature a return to ‘military Keynesianism’. Short of AI leading to the much-awaited Singularity, merely dumping more money in the tech industry won’t suddenly bring Keynes to life. Perhaps we are more likely to witness the weird new regime of ‘military neoliberalism’ in which ever-greater government spending on AI- and cloud-related matters would widen inequality and enrich the tech giants’ shareholders.

Hello world. I'm Tomasino.

This is Solarpunk Prompts, a series for writers where we discuss Solarpunk, a movement that imagines a world where technology is used for the good of the planet.

In this series we spend each episode exploring a single Solarpunk story prompt adding some commentary, some inspirations, and some considerations.

If this is your first time here, I'd recommend checking out our introduction episode first, where we talk about what Solarpunk is, why you should care, and why this series came into being.

Tonight our prompt is about the Global South on a mission North. It is called: "The Expedition"

A group of doctors and engineers from a Global South country are sent on a mission in the North, helping the specialists there live in the world after The Great Internet Collapse, where the AIs will no longer make suggestions and the Clouds can't calculate the load bearing strength of a pillar.

What is the Global South?

The concept of the Global South and Global North are not strictly geographical. Indeed, a large portion of the Global South is above the equator. Instead the terms refer to a grouping of countries along a socio-economic and political boundaries.

The Global South usually refers to Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. The term came about as an alternative to "Third World" which doesn't devalue those it speaks of.

The Global North, then, usually refers to North America, Europe, Australia, and Russia. It's sometimes used in place of "developed countries".

Over the last 30 years the Global South has been on the rise politically, economically, and technologically. Some of that has been due to the migration of manufacturing and production, but there have also been major independent cultural shifts across the globe.

It's very difficult to make broad claims about the state of the Global South despite the term being designed to do just that. The digital divide is a key metric used to separate the two, yet internet use in Asia far exceeds many places in the Global North.

The term "Global South" itself had its origins in the late 60s in the context of Vietnam. "The dominance of the north over the Global South" was the phrase, referring to the long history of colonialism between the regions.

Culturally the south holds the vast majority of indiginous peoples, the dominant religious bases, and the lesser share of money.

Former West-German Chancellor Willy Brandt created a visual line, quite squiggly, across the world dividing it into the wealthy north and the poor south.

In summary: Being categorized as part of the "North" implies development as opposed to belonging to the "South", which implies a lack thereof.

Reliance on technology in the North as a psychological factor

It is exactly that concept that has taught the Global South how to live and work around instability in their infrastructure, whether that be political, economic, or technological.

It is a mentality that simply doesn't exist in the north, as evidence by the runaway march toward total digital economic dependence.

The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change wrote an article in 2019 on the state of economic infrastructure in the European Economic Area, stating:

Internet infrastructure services are both widespread and critical to businesses’ core functions, with significant volumes of economic activity dependent on them.

It continues:

[...] some infrastructure services, such as payments or cloud storage, can be thought of as critical infrastructure – any significant or prolonged failure of one of these could undermine the business’s ability to carry out its activities to a potentially existential degree, while possibly triggering a domino effect throughout the rest of the economy. It’s also important to note that many infrastructure businesses higher up the stack are themselves dependent on infrastructure businesses lower down the stack.

This is the main problem the Global North faces in our prompt. A rich, developed society run with fundamental infrastructure built online collapsing under the cascade of failures when that internet access disappears.

Picture a world only ten years in our future. Machine learning has advanced, AI has infiltrated many jobs. It may support a surgeon in their work, providing real-time data in the heat of the moment. Or it may be used in mechanical or civil engineering, providing simulation data that tests and retests the safety of bridges, pipes, or waterways. Students entering the field are taught to work with these systems, and learn to rely on them. Perhaps they learned the theory in school, but in practice you work with the standard tools of the trade. What's left is a gap of functionality. Either you have the tools or you regress to the basics, and practice with the in-between is lost.

Who can you turn to? Who would have the skills you need? Who can help?

Why is the Global South better for this?

The experts growing up in the Global South were forced to learn how to fix their own equipment, and to do so without expensive manufacturers' services. They hack, break, hotfix. They do what they need to make things work, whether it's with the technology or around it.

This type of free-form problem solving is a daily practice. There is far more experience with make-it-work attitudes.

Like Jugaad in India, the creative, inexpensive solution is the most effective because it keeps you moving forward despite your barriers.

This isn't to say that the Global South has no access or knowledge of modern technology. On the contrary, they not only need to know how to use those things, but deeply understand their functioning so they can be patched and maintained with parts never meant for the purpose.

That may mean knowing how to strip out DRM, Digital Rights Management, because a system was designed by people that only ever thought of it being used in the United States. They may need to bypass this or that check, or make a system work somewhere it wasn't intended.

Is it any wonder that Solarpunk found its start there?

We're talking about self-sufficiency here, not primitiveness.

Cuban doctors

Lets look at an example.

After the 1959 Cuban Revolution, Cuba established a program to send its medical personnel overseas, particularly to Latin America, Africa, and Oceania, and to bring medical students and patients to Cuba for training and treatment respectively.

This program became the backbone of what's been called Cuba's soft-diplomacy or doctor diplomacy. It's so successful, these traveling Cuban doctors have their own wikipedia page. But seriously, in 2015, Cuba had more than 50,000 health personnel in 103 different countries. That's more medical personal than all the G8 countries combined. Their work is focused on long-term, sustainable care in the most underserved populations around the world.

Imagine the life of a doctor from the Global South. This isn't her first time in the field, heading to some place desperate for her help. Her people call her a Salvager, dragging out what healing she can from hard-hit places. She knows she's walking into trouble, too. This will be hard. For every person who will cry for her help, there is another she'll have to convince. "We're just here to help," she'll repeat. Conditions will be terrible. They'll lack everything she needs, but she knows what to do to make do. That's her expertise, her experience.

What does that collapse look like?

So what might collapse look like in your story? Imagine all the "public-facing" internet failing. Yeah, some hackers can still get a local network going, maybe a server for a building, but no Facebook. No Amazon. A lot of doctors will say "No problem, most of our records are still on paper!" and then they'll laugh, until they realize their equipment is iOT, and won't work without a manufacturer's server running. No more cloud. No more Google search.

If that surgeon had become reliant on the AI assistant, well it's back to the basics again. Perhaps that's not so bad now, but in 10 years? In 20, when these practices become as commonplace as Excel in an office. Do you even remember using a green sheet? Manually tallying columns and checking your math again and again? How quickly the knowledge of the old way fades.

Then remember the domino effect. One system may be the basis for several more. Our economies are integrated, mixed things. Small disruptions can have major effects. How much worse would a major internet outtage be? Once it went from days to weeks, how many businesses would still survive? And without those functioning, what about food? What about heating? How far down the line do you really need to look before there is a total collapse?

But the internet couldn't really be disrupted, right? That's an extreme example for fiction. Is it believable?

We already see events today that mimic the same result. Ransomware attacks disable hospitals around the world.

It's not just their registration systems. These attacks also affect the machines themselves. Thanks to IOT and Global North thinking, MRIs, tomographs, even dialysis machines can all stop working when they can't get online. When an attack like this hits, sometimes patients need to be transferred to another hospital.

Imagine if it happened to all of them.

Writing ideas

How can we approach these situations with fiction? The setting of the collapsing North is dramatic and will give plenty of impetus for action. The team being sent to aid them is clearly our community protagonist. That's the easy part.

How can we level that up?

Let's lean into the misconceptions to illustrate how painfully wrong they are. The Northern leaders, professors, or administrators may be offended at the idea of these vagrants sent to save them. It need not be vicious or mean, either. These could be well-intending people who lack inter-cultural literacy. Now we have extra tension on top of the infrastructure. Hospitals need to operate. The metro needs to go, even if it hasn't been serviced in a month. The conditions are terrible, and the people aren't even greatful for their help.

Can you feel the struggle there? Just imagine waking up into that reality. How strong must your personal sense of ethics be to withstand it, to weather that storm time and time again.

Naturally, we initially focused on more captivating tasks. These last weeks, we worked on transitioning to MongoDB, a source-available database developed by MongoDB Inc. And, as of today, the migration is complete — we now fully own our data! If, for any reason, we were denied service, we could simply move to another provider — this has so many benefits that it's hard to write them all.

Still, all things considered, we don't want to hate on Firestore — it's terrific! We just value our sovereignty more than maximizing convenience and minimizing costs.

In practical terms, this means more flexibility and better performance for HEYHEY as our server and database are no longer in different regions.

Unfortunately, the migration script has updated everyone's unique ID, and while the old IDs are still stored, they will stop working soon. It was the easiest way for us to continue developing HEYHEY without being slowed down by this change. If you have a username, though, you have nothing to worry about — they will keep working!

Also, when our incorporation process is complete, we will release our biggest update: Shops. Stay tuned!
