I started "Britt Marie Was Here" by Fredrik Backman because my sister had given it to me for my birthday last year along with "Song of Achilles" and honestly, I wasn't expecting much but I'm 7 chapters in and I'm still recovering from the shock that was the first chapter, the way Britt Marie prides herself in things that she's already lost

The image of her priding herself as a wife and caretaker of her home only to peel back the truth that she had left home and she is alone now at a hostel, still staying up for the ghost of what she once had

#clover reads #fredrik backman #britt marie was here #the thing is too that he does this a LOT in this book #he puts up a lot of these motifs but the more you read the more layers he adds onto them #which makes you go back and reread scenes prior with a new perspective #the way she prided herself over balcony plants #but in the current chapter i'm in she talks about how love is no different from balcony plants. not even baking soda can make a difference #that the love got lost a long long time ago #all she's doing is trying to hope that the plants will regrow #i wouldn't be surprised at all if the balcony plants never grew again #no matter how hard she tried #anyways i usually don't chat about reading and this blog is just for quote compilation #but do you ever experience something in a book that it becomes so overwhelming you need to talk about it? #that's what this is lol

there's something so crushing seeing eleanor seem so happy now in hill house just because for once it listens to her compared to many people shes met before. people talk over her or dont seem to listen. she becomes so small compared to everyone else but the house listens that night it bangs on her and theodora's door. it listen to her and that finally gives eleanor the power she felt she didnt have.
