Thurfian was right about Thrawn
Tumblr media
After rereading Chaos Rising I can finally try to put into words what bothers me about Thrawn:
Thrawn was a danger to society & peace even before entering imperial service. He had genocidal tendencies from the beginning and *heavy sigh* Thurfian had a point. Nobody should give a gun or a battle ship EVER to Thrawn.
Thrawn & friends have little to no regards for the civil Syndicure
Chaos rising depicts the Chiss government as divided at least into the civil Syndicure and the the military Chiss Expansionary Defense Force. The military is somewhat independent but gets controlled through laws and hearings by the civil Syndicure. During the book, the Syndicure is shown as plagued by infighting, snobbish, conniving, unable to make the right long-term decisions, meddling with military affairs, etc. The heros of the story on the other side predominantly belong to the chiss military. We witness them disrespect diplomats. At one point Thrawn suggests using the diplomat status as cover to spy under. They set up a huge scheme to trick the Syndicure into declaring war to circumvent military doctrine. And also 50% of the book is about how to ignore laws that are designed to ensure peace in the most spectacular way.
50% of the book is about how to ignore laws
Thrawn, his enablers (and author Zahn) have a worrying tendency to willfully misinterpret laws. Laws are written with intend. One can disagree with the content of laws and argue against them. But especially for those in power laws are designed to prevent misuse of power and define what societal servants like military officers can and cannot do. Thrawn and his friends, who literally have warships at their disposal and have the ability to start a war without ever being legally empowered to do so, constantly disobey that civil societal control. And the no preemptive strike / "DO NOT ATTACK UNLESS ATTACKED FIRST"-law is pretty clear. What Thrawn does would in real life lead to rightful removal from post, court martial and public outrage so fast that one could write a 3 book thriller about the court case instead. Yet to see Thrawn's undermining acts legitimised by the story and framed as necessary defense, is extremely problematic. Unelected governmental servants of the executive branch like the military or the police force in many countries are not mandated to make decisions of grand societal impact for a reason. Thrawn might see himself as a defender of his people. But his people deserve more than Thrawns paternalistic actions that have the potential stir up an internal governance crisis about who controls the military.
Everything is allowed in war?
To understand my last argument its best to read this first (Memories VII):
Tumblr media
Thrawn does not differentiate between the general civil population and the government of the people he wages war against. He has no qualms wiping out a whole people if he considers it justified. But a subjective opinion and need for revenge is no basis for military action and essentially genocide. Even if Thrawn got stopped by Ba'kif that time someone who thinks like Thrawn and shows no remorse, should not have the power to act on his wants. Take his command away!
All of this leads to the conclusion that Thurfian as a member of the civil Syndicure had a point when considering Thrawn as dangerous and someone who should not be in charge of military assets. And even if it is depicted as mean and guileful, the removal of Thrawn is an understandable action later in the series.
Why does this matter?
Thrawn is a somewhat popular fictional character. The books are read by most as light fiction. Therefore most people will not think twice about the underlying themes and arguments in the text. I don't even think Timothy Zahn as the author was intentional in putting that in there. But the themes of unquestioned pro-militarism, anti separation of power & civil governmental oversight, military action over diplomatic approaches, little regard of binding peace ensuring law, and extreme negative attitudes towards the foreign and other are in there. And those things exist in real life and get enforced unconsciously by stuff like that.

A historical What If I am wondering about
During the World War II, Pope Pius XII was ideologically critical of the Nazis. Under his leadership various Catholics took some measures to rescue Jews and the Pope did publicly condemn the holocaust (but in somewhat vague terms). Some people have claimed that he “did nothing”, which is not true. But I do wonder how things would have turned out if he had chosen a different form of resistance.
What if the Pope had declared that all members of the NSDAP and everyone who helped in the attempt exterminate Jews and Romani is excommunicated? And in addition, if he had declared all oaths to the Nazi regime void and urged the Catholics serving in the German military to desert?
In response, the Nazis would of course take measures against the Catholic Church to bring it under their control, appoint bishops loyal to their rule, imprison clergy loyal to the pope, end the Vatican as a state, etc. This would reduce the ability of the Catholics to render aid clandestinly, which could very well lead to more people dying. The question is: would it have been worth it? How many Catholics would have openly acted against the Nazis and what impact would that have had?
This What If, more abstractly, is the question of which alternative is better when evil is commited:
1) high chance to aid victims clandestinly, some public opposition to the evil, low risk to oneself
2) low chance to aid victims clandestinly, high public opposition to evil (but still low chance of success), high risk to oneself
I do think this is a difficult choice and I think it is understandable that Pius XII chose 1. But I fear this won’t be the last time the Church has to make such a choice, so it is a relevant question if 2 would have been better.
(Addendum 1: To answer these question, it would probably be worthwhile to look at other instances of Catholic resistance to atrocities.)
(Addendum 2: Some of the instances in which Catholics hid/rescued jews deserve their own criticism. In particular the cases in which they rescued children but refused to return them after the war.)

cartoon network needs to start letting comic nerds run their lineup again. i miss turning on the cartoon channel™️ and seeing an action drama so beautiful and convoluted and fucked up that it rivals dc and x-men's wildest plots

Heyo! As a Canadian, are there any particular ways we can help Palestine? Also, who are the companies actively shipping shit to israel?
Hello! Thank you so much for the question. I'd first like to take the opportunity to state that the federal government in Canada right now -the Trudeau Government -has been terribly consistent with supporting the IOF. For DECADES -since the creation of the settler state (which should not be a surprise to anyone, of course), Canada has a LONG 'diplomatic' history of being pro-Isnotreal. For folks who don't know/aren't aware, since we often hear about/talk about the US's imperialistic policies and actions against many communities around the world (which, again is understandable given the billions in military aid they give to Isnotreal and the sheer amount of militaristic aggression and violence the US unleashes daily to people they deem a 'threat' to their empire) -but I always remind folks to not forget that Canada is equally awful and problematic.
The Trudeau government, like many MP's across party lines, have supported the IOF and the Trudeau government has denied genocide 'allegations' against Isnotreal at the ICJ. Trudeau is also the one who advocated for a "humanitarian pause," after stumbling on his words a few months ago, and has, from time to time, 'condemned,' the IOF military for going 'overboard' when he trickles in his little empathetic 'we are so concerned for the people in Gaza,' while in the same breath saying the IOF didn't strike hospitals... (side eyes).
These are some recent examples (the first in June, and December of 2023, respectively) -which shows proof that Canada exports weapons to the IOF (but often through the US -the article below addresses this). Since you asked about about which companies are shipping to Isnotreal, the only one I can reference is CN Rail [Canadian National Railway] (which is where some protests have happened), but there aren't any other particular companies I can reference because shipments are done relatively in secret, so there's not a strong/direct paper trail, so to speak. this is an except from the first article below:
"Canada doesn’t normally release many details on defence exports to Israel or other countries. Since 2015, however, the largest annual categories of shipments fall into three categories: bombs, torpedoes, missiles and other explosive devices; aircraft, drones, aero engines, aircraft equipment for military use and electronic equipment; spacecraft and components." "A 2020-2021 study by the House of Commons foreign affairs committee obtained records that shed some light on the goods Canadian firms were seeking permission to export to Israel, including transport vehicles, circuit boards for Israel’s fleet of F-15 and V-22 aircraft and components for radios." "The Canadian-made components that go into each F-35 don’t show up in Ottawa’s records of military goods exports because they are shipped to the United States, where the aircraft’s manufacturer, Lockheed Martin, is based, and Global Affairs Canada does not publish the full value of annual military exports to the U.S."
It is very concerning how the Canadian government operates this way, and we should all be demanding more transparency about arms transfers to the US. Project Ploughshares, the research committee that they spoke about in the first article, is a resource I would look into if you want to learn more about this. They focus on "disarmament efforts and international security specifically related to the arms trade..." I've attached their website below. You can also access previous webinars, reports, and commentary on their page on these topics.
There were 2 successful direct action protests in Canada, one in Winnipeg and the other in Montreal, in November and December of last year, respectively. Both of whom were blocking railways in an effort to raise awareness about Canada supporting and sending arms to Isnotreal.
This also happened recently:
Now, what can be done on our ends? Plenty -sharing and creating posts about what is happening -and telling the world we won't remain silent on the genocide happening in Gaza.
This is the most updated BDS movement list for you to boycott companies and brands that either profit off of or indirectly support the genocide of Palestinian people:
Oxfam also created this small article about what we can do to help which I find is a great start:
Some of the actions include emailing the Prime Minister (they have a template for you to work with), and I wanted to also include emailing your MP's (Members of Parliament), to demand a ceasefire.
There is also a current petition in parliament right now you can sign -it's a demand to a ceasefire, and also demands an investigation into Canadian arms deals/sells in Isnotreal -and for more transparency into this, generally speaking (you can read everything the MP outlines below). This is open until February 19th, 2024. I may also make a separate post about this too:
There are some petitions on change.org I know people have set up, so you can take a look there of course. There is also a source that Oxfam links -they have a section of current events/resources where you can take action. The most recent national march for Gaza was in December 2023 (it took place in Ottawa, on unceded and un-surrendered Algonquin territory -Parliament Hill), and I am sure more will be planned for those able to attend/what is accessible to you.
I know this was quite long, but I hope this offers some direction and clarity, if not encourages more people to look into some of these topics and issues more deeply. Thank you once again for sharing this today. I will also be updating my page soon.
As always, free Palestine!

Steven Universe Anon here
Y'know what's funny? Rebecca had the absolute guts to put in genocidal dictators/"space Nazis" in her CHILDRENS SHOW
And Viv does nothing but put gay people and sex workers in Hell 💀 She has murderers/cannibals/rapists/hardcore drug addicts down there, but those are the obvious, safe options. (I'd also say it's risky to put drug addicts down there too)
But she has no actual balls to tackle anything heavier than that. I know the argument is "God/Heaven are obviously massive dicks and who they pick and choose is unfair. Gay people shouldn't go to Hell and that's the whole point" but like... it's just a bad look.
And I have issues with the way the Diamonds were handled, but they were never forgiven. They're actually complex characters who are grieving from their loss, but they're also horrible horrible characters. But, at least Rebecca actually gave them SOMETHING to work towards being good. Like Yellow Diamond repairing gems, and White Diamond going down to those she used to deem as lesser beings. I feel those things were rushed (because of CN I'm sure), but at least Rebecca tried.
She also never flipped out at any critism and handled things far more maturely.
I don't see Viv doing anything of that nature in her "super mature R rated show".
Full disclosure, I've never liked when people refer to the Diamonds as Nazis. That's not cool, that's a real thing that killed real people. But yes, the Diamonds are genocidal dictators and complete monsters. They're alien rocks that carve up everything around them and take it for themselves. It's the only thing they've ever known how to be.
What Rebecca did with them was incredibly ballsy, because she allowed them to be monsters, and to explore why they are the way they are, and ultimately to have them make the conscious choice to try a better way of living, all without making excuses for them. They're capable of loving immensely, and it's that love that brings out the best in them, and they do put the work into changing, but Steven's never really comfortable around them at all.
Steven Universe was so ridiculously good for what it was. I don't think Viv's capable of creating something with that many layers.

The 10 Biggest Mistakes Arknights Has Made
10. First run of SSS
This was just a catastrophe, the gamemode was so unbalanced it was nigh unplayable at times. Pinch Out could maybe be here but I'm mad they made us play through the shitty version when it was already fixed in CN.
9. Destroying the space-time continuum (letting you use Alters along with their original versions)
I'm petty, but I also think preserving the continuity of reality is important.
8. Banishing Liduke to do Endfield stuff only
Where are you, Liduke, we need you.
7. Dobermann's American accent in English dub
Frankly, I'm offended by this, they couldn't have gotten ANYONE with a South American background for her?
6. Everything about Skadi, the Corrupting Heart
She has unleashed too many abominations into the fandom, I wish she never existed now.
5. Not letting big women be big
You seriously want me to believe Mudrock is 160cm??? That Hoshiguma isn't taller than twink ass Elysium and Gnosis???
4. White woman dreads Gavial
Cringe. There's no other word for it, this makes me cringe, it's embarrassing.
3. Squandering the cool idea of a post-joining-Rhodes Island Ch'en alter just to sell lazy cheesecake to horny gachabros
Really feels like they had a cool idea in mind and then someone from marketing said "we need to do seasonal alts, turn your upcoming alter into cheesecake." And I want to give them this out because otherwise it means they were all on board with doing this to one of the most prominent women in the game and story.
2. Dropping the Taran genocide plot
You already know what I think about this.
1. The Entirety of Hypergryph Korea
Our Father who art in heaven- please take all of the suffering of lesbians and give it to Korean incels.

chloe stans (mostly the tiktok ones) have changed over the years. They used to be kind and consistent now they randomly bring up genocide when proven wrong. the fandom has changed so much, we used to just want akuma! lb and cn back in 2016-2017 now we have...uhm... whatever those weird fans do nowadays.
Like, comparing her to Felix? I get bringing it up when pointing out the double standards in the narrative but not in Chloé’s defense lol

Outpourings of shock and sympathy flooded Canada’s political landscape in the days following Hamas’ October 7 surprise attack on Israel. Parliament’s Peace Tower had the Israeli flag projected onto it, while the CN Tower shone blue and white at the top of every hour. Leaders of every political party, federal and provincial alike, issued statements condemning Hamas’ terror attacks in the strongest terms. Not to be outdone by his peers, Justin Trudeau declared, “Let me be very clear: Hamas terrorists aren’t a resistance. They’re not freedom fighters. They’re terrorists.” Full stop. Predictably, hardly a word of sympathy was uttered for Palestinians in Gaza, who were almost immediately being bombed, and soon had their water and power shut off. Ontario MPP Sarah Jama dared to mention Israel’s occupation, calling for an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation. She was promptly reprimanded by her party and forced to issue a more “balanced” statement—one decrying Hamas unequivocally—amid cries for her resignation. The crime of regarding Israel with anything other than reverence bears a heavy price. [...] The purpose of journalism was once to provide people with clarity and facts amidst uncertainty; to furnish them with alternative narratives that are not politically motivated, but are motivated rather by the discovery and dissemination of truth. Yet if you looked to the media for such answers following Hamas’ attack, what you instead found was journalists amplifying the mainstream political narrative. In some cases, they offered suggestions, thinly veiled as questions, as to what the government should do with Canadians exercising their freedom of expression in support of Palestinians. “What do you say to Canadians,” CBC Power & Politics host David Cochrane asked Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, “who might go to a protest that critics say is purporting to celebrate what Hamas has done? I mean, should these protests be happening? There have been some calls by others to maybe find a way to prosecute this over supporting terrorism.”

[The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.]
CN: mental illness, trauma, (internalized) ableism, references to self-harm and suicide, graphic gore, body horror, violence (including murder and torture), off-page sexual violence (including experiences that involve children), abuse (including child abuse and off-page domestic violence), mentions of transphobia and racism (including references to slavery and genocide), animal death, vomit
“For anyone worried you might be the villain in your own story. Maybe you are. I think you deserve a happy ending, anyway.”
Oh. My. Gods. This. Book.
I knew from the first page that this was going to be a five star read, but I never expected that I would love it this much.
“The Witch King” used to be my all-time favorite book, and I still absolutely adore it, but “Godly Heathens” is on another level. I already know I’m going to reread this book at least once before it comes out in November, and many, many times after that.
If you’re looking for a book with…
villainous main characters
reincarnated old gods
a t4t4t non-monogamous love triangle
a trans- and Native-majority cast
amazing mental illness representation
… then “Godly Heathens” might be the perfect book for you. It’s definitely the perfect book for me, and I will probably try to force everyone I know to read it as soon as it comes out.
I’m trying so hard to write a review that does this book justice, but I literally have no coherent thoughts right now, so please just trust me when I say that this book is absolutely incredible.
Please pre-order “Godly Heathens” or request it at your local library if you can!

While I personally disagree with the Forgotten Realms' strict interpretations of their vampires as this anon wishes that BOTH angles could be possible (a vampire struggling and mourning their loss of humanity and vampires who embrace their newfound monstrosity). Especially since they've done it before.
One of Strahd's enemies, a sun elf turned vampire in the older Ravenloft editions named Jander Sunstar, was never directly given an Evil alignment and was clearly empathetic and remorseful regarding his condition. He shows up in 2e as a CN vampire with noticeable CG tendencies, 3e labelled him CE but his personality reflected that less, I feel. He technically is a CR13 creature in 5e as well (Monster Manual after all).
All that said... Ascended Astarion is clearly the latter example. He wanted power. He got power. Power doesn't corrupt---it reveals a lot of the time. If you, Tav, don't encourage him to see that you DON'T need to be a dominating power hungry monster (aka. all he's known and seen from Cazador)... then he becomes a power hungry monster. 🤯🤯🤯 SHOCKING.
It feels like a lot of woobifying and wanting him to still be better than he actually is. Having your cake and eating it too, if you will. Plenty of vampires can be neutral or even good in behaviour with enough discipline and they have been in the setting. If anything, they are probably just the Planes and Detect Alignment spells always pinging them as Evil. But... Ascended Astarion is not that LMAO. I'd even argue he starts the game as NE or CN, and no shit he does. Why would he think to show any vulnerability when he tells himself that killing SEVEN THOUSAND INNOCENT SPAWN IS JUSTIFIABLE because HE had no power and he DESERVES to do this. In a lot of ways, I can still see someone being sympathetic and wanting him to have that chance, not perhaps realizing the gravity of what that does to his soul.
Almost like... he committed a horrendous act and became a worse person for it. The curse and added Infernal component just adds to it and as interactions are as they are ingame for Act 3... like, WHY are people so shocked by the consequences of their own actions?
Sorry for filling your box with random thoughts. Your takes are thought-provoking and fun to read so I hope this is okay!
oh god i see a big anon message and start sweating but i'm so glad you're at least here to discuss and not preach kkjgkshg
i feel like the point of vampires being monsters isn't just a d&d thing, its just a general mythos thing. the good thing about d&d is that you are well within your right to create whatever story you want with your group, the rules and guides are there to just give you some basics. but obviously there are outliers within every race/monster/class. that's what makes stories exciting. so yes having someone like sunstar is an interesting juxtaposition to strahd but he is also an outlier, an exception if you will.
do i believe vampires can be good? no. do i believe they can be neutral and work towards a better alignment/not becoming genocidal dickwads? absolutely. there is nothing that says vampires can't drink animal blood for sustenance, there is nothing that mentions they will die if they don't fuck with humanoids, there is nothing that makes it so they have to have spawn/consorts/puppets. so with that in mind, do as you wish with your own vampires.
some races are meant to be evil for lore/gameplay purposes, that's just part of it. drow are naturally going to align to evil, but that doesn't mean drizzt can't exist to break the stereotypes and work towards something "better". goblins are also the primary evil bad guys in every low level campaign, but that doesn't mean they can't work for something "better".
my point was more general there, that people like to take away everything that makes vampires vampires (in every universe, not just d&d) and twist it just so their little babyboy can be slotted into the "good ones" category which is what i despise. astarion will never be good aligned no matter what happens. he is a chaotic neutral at best.
but yes, exactly as you said. not only does the game constantly hint to, point to and expressely tell you what is going to happen when he gets these souls, and give you very clear answers POST ascension/spawn of who he is and what he would have/has become, but you would have to be willfully ignorant to deny it. you can understand why he would want to get power, you don't have to approve of it or encourage it. i feel like people are missing that difference, it's as though they are trying to convince others of why astarion wants this outcome, and i feel most people can understand that. the problem is what happens after it and what it causes not only to him but to others around him.
ty for the morning discourse, i'm typing this with one eye open.

Since you also believe that Team Ro cared much about each other, what are your thoughts on an AU where Itachi, after Shisui's death and between the time Danzō brought up the massacre thing but before Itachi does do it, he instead found himself in desperate need of an advice and did the only thing he could think of: go to his Taichō hoping to find any sort of help from one of the very few people he could trust
OH MY GOSH SO MANY CHOICES
CN: mentions of suicidal thoughts & genocide
I wanna say that Kakashi quietly goes and assassinates Danzo & the other anti-Uchiha elders in the middle of the night. But that would have consequences. If he does it anonymously, he risks Danzo being martyred and the Uchiha scapegoated and punished.
So he leaves his own lightning chakra everywhere.
He then confronts the Uchiha with Danzo's head to show both that he's a friend, and that he's serious, and tells them that if they do try and overthrow the village and instate Uchiha-rule, they will be executed. He'll help, in fact, because one clan imposing rule over all the others ain't great. But now there are three council spots opening up, and he's just made himself Konoha's public enemy number one.
He holds out his wrists to Itachi, still holding Danzo's bloody head up by the hair. "If you take me in," he says, toneless, almost bored, "it'll put your clan in better stead."
Itachi feels a bit sick. Danzo won't be the only one headless by the end of today, and Taicho must know that, he must, but he did this anyway.
It shouldn't be a surprise. He's always been a risk-taker, throwing himself into the line of every kunai like he can't bear to commit seppuku but lives only in the hope someone else will do it for him.
Somehow, that motivation would be almost as hard to accept as if Taicho just did this out of some misplaced sense of kindness.
Itachi's hands tighten into fists. "I had a mission," he whispers, voice shaking far more than he would like. I never asked you to interfere. I never wanted you to take the fall for me. I'm not a child, I don't need to be saved -
But a part of him lets itself relax, in a way he hasn't since he was first informed of his family's coup. Deep down, he knows that he is a child. And he did need to be saved.
He just wishes this wasn't the price.
Kakashi-Taicho presses his wrists forward a little more determinedly, one brow raised. "And now you have another," he says.
Itachi ties his hands together, using special ANBU finger-locks so he can't make seals. He takes him in, as he's supposed to. As Captain wants him to. As his family needs him to.
But if the ropes are tied a little looser than they should be, and Itachi staggers into the ANBU compound a half-hour later, head bleeding from a (self-inflicted) kunai scrape, mumbling sometihng about the traitor having escaped... Well, that's no one's business but theirs.
#
OR.
Or.
Another alternative concept for you...
Kakashi offers to do the job instead of Itachi, so Itachi doesn't have to live with the burden of that guilt.
Honestly... I'm not 100% sure he'd spare Sasuke, unless Itachi specifically asked him to.
Itachi still has to go into hiding as the massacre gets pinned on him, but Kakashi accompanies him into life as a nukenin out of some weird messed-up sense of loyalty and responsibility towards his teammate. Maybe they'd both infiltrate Akatsuki together... All while Itachi is growing up and dealing with some very complicated emotions about how Kakashi murdered his entire family... for him?
(And Kakashi is having some very confused emotions about the orange-masked idiot who keeps staring at him for uncomfortably long periods, but that's another story).
There are a lot of directions that this idea could go, and all of them would be really fascinating to explore!

There is a story idea I have been thinking about for some time and unlike many others of my story ideas it is one I would feel capable of writing with my current skill level.
But I am afraid that this story will be too weird to be accepted and will brand me as weird. Because the story would handle a pretty thorny theme without treating it in the way that is socially accepted. More about that under the cut.
The story would be loosely inspired by the myth of Hades and Perspehone - but I'm not sure if it has more similarities to that myth than to other bride kidnapping stories; CN for forced marriage/bride kidnapping and threat of rape.
Summary
Soft Sci-Fi setting. A Skilled Warrior wins a great victory for his empire. Is rewarded by the emperor with gifts, but he would prefer to be given the Emperor's Daughter in marriage. Emperor rejects this because social norms have changed in favor of free marriage choice, Emperor's Daughter rejects this because she isn't interested. Skilled Warrior kidnaps her with the intention of forcing her into marriage and brings her to a location beyond the reach of the emperor. The Emperor's Daughter has a limited time window to convince the Skilled Warrior to change his mind.
Much of the first half of the book would be taken up by the debate between the two. And here is the problem: To have this be a debate, rape cannot be treated as axiomatically wrong. Instead, a potential rape victim would need to convince a potential rapists that it isn't in his best interest to rape her. This is far from how the issue is normally discussed in the present, where some crimes (rape among them) are treated as so evil as to be beyond discussion.
She then succeeds in convincing him to release her, by arguing convincingly that the joys of a consensual marriage are greater than the joys of a forced marriage and that a consensual marriage is more conductive to achieving his religious and societal goals. Which is different to how "redemption" is normally handled in media - there is no emotional "oh no, what have I done!"-moment, instead the "redemption" goes like "I see now that my actions were based on faulty reasoning, so now that I know this I will change my actions".
And then, some time after the Emperor's Daughter is released, she would contact the Skilled Warrior with the offer: "Visit me and present your argument why I should marry you." The second half of the book would largely be that debate, in which he ultimately convinces her of marrying him. There are two aspects of this that people might consider problematic: that she ends up marrying her attempted rapist, and that this is explicitly framed as a rational argument instead of, for lack of a better word, vibes-based (as love generally is in modern stories).
The point (or at least a point) of the story would be to analyze how the selfish aspects and the selfless aspects of love relate to each other. A possible title I came up with would be "A Dispute of Desire and Affection".
My worries about the story
I get the feeling that the story would feel pretty weird to many people and if it ever gets some amount of prominance would get much criticism. Presenting immorality as understandable, only misguided and open to logical argument is quite different from the more vibes based morality that I get the impression is common; but that is something I think public discourse is on the wrong path. I think loosing the ability to rationally argue against evils like rape, slavery, and genocide is actually quite dangerous. So writing a story like that should be good, shouldn't it?
But what I fear most is people using the story to psychoanalyze me...
(I have wondered if I could tell the story more explicitly as a retelling of the myth of Hades and Persphone, that way I could just say "all the problematic elements are from the original text, I am just engaging with them". However, I don't think it would work because a) there is not really place for Demeter in this story idea while in the original it is her action that gets Persephone back, and b) rape is probably too normalized in Greek mythology for the way it is treated in this story. So I am doubtful this could work. - But maybe I should take a closer look on what changes would be required and what advantages and disadvantages would come with that.)
I wonder if my worries on this are rational, or if the perspective of public rejection just scares me on an emotional level.

Modi and co using Sanatana ploy to divert attention; will face cases legally, says Udhayanidhi
He also launched a strident attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he was "globe-trotting", afraid of facing questions over the Manipur violence.
Tumblr media
CHENNAI: Under intense attack from the BJP over his alleged anti-Sanatana Dharma remarks, DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Thursday accused the saffron party leaders of “twisting” his statements and vowed to face all cases in this connection legally.
He also launched a strident attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he was “globe-trotting”, afraid of facing questions over the Manipur violence.
“For the last 9 years, all your (BJP) promises are empty promises. What have you exactly done for our welfare is a question currently being raised in unison by the entire country against an unarmed, fascist BJP government. It is in this background that the BJP leaders have twisted my speech at the TNPWAA conference as ‘inciting genocide’. They consider it a weapon to protect themselves,” he said.
What is surprising is that those like Union Minister Amit Shah and Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states were demanding action against him based on “fake news,” Udhayanidhi said.
“In all fairness, I should be the one filing criminal cases and other court cases against them for spreading slander while holding respectable positions. But I am aware that this is their mode of survival. They don’t know how else to survive, so I decided not to do that,” he said.
He was one of the political heirs of Dravidian stalwart, the late CN Annadurai, the founder of the DMK.
“Everyone knows that we are not enemies of any religion.”
“I would like to quote Anna’s comment on religions which remains relevant even today. If religion leads people towards equality and teaches them fraternity, then I too am a spiritualist. If a religion divides people in the name of castes, if it teaches them untouchability and slavery, I would be the first person to oppose religion,” he said quoting Annadurai.
He said DMK respects all religions that teach all lives are born equal.
“But without an iota of understanding about any of these, Thiru Modi and Co are solely dependent on such slanders to face the Parliamentary elections. On the one hand, I can only feel sorry for them. For the last 9 years, Modi has been doing nothing. Occasionally he demonetises money, builds walls to hide huts, builds new Parliamentary building, erects a Sengol (sceptre) there, plays around by changing the name of the country, standing at the border and making the white flag work,” he lashed out.
Has there been any progressive scheme from the Union government in the last nine years like the DMK’s “Pudhumai Penn” or the Chief Minister’s breakfast scheme or the Kalaignar’s women’s rights scheme, he asked. “Have they built the AIIMS in Madurai? Did they take forward any knowledge movement like the Kalaignar Centenary Library?”
“Afraid of having to face questions about Manipur in India, he is globe-trotting along with his friend Adani. The fact is, the ignorance of the people is the capital of their theatrical politics,” he claimed.
“Thiru Modi and co are using the Sanatana ploy to divert the attention from the facts including the killing of more than 250 people in the riots incited in Manipur and the Rs 7. 5 lakh crore corruption,” he charged.
There was a lot of work for the party workers, including preparing for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, he said and asked them to focus on that. “I would like to inform that I will face the cases filed against me legally with the guidance of our party president (TN CM MK Stalin) and on the advice of our party high command,” he added.
