no kiss very fine morning ready in 55 minutes - had Mr. Husband about Bates’s estimate for A-‘s engine at Water lane mill - H- said the order was  not yet positively given but he was of the same opinion as before - the new people would do the engine well, and A- would save £100 by employing them even tho’ B- had brought down his estimate to £300 + £29 (vid. top line of the last p.) - However H- did not like the responsibility of ordering the engine, and preferred waiting till Mr. Harper came - told H- I would have the meer levelled again - and told him I thought of turning the old coach house into a brew house and pulling the present brew house down - H- said that would be easily done and without much expense - H-‘s H-x blacksmith here with his boy and they 2 under H-‘s directions drilled a hole in the oven door to make a vent to let out the steam at the pleasure of the cook, the oven being in bad reputation and wanting as H- said only the means of letting out the steam without opening the door - Had Mosey and paid his bill for railing about the house and for Mark Town, and John Oates, and Jonathan Mallinson for the new gates for A. Green at Mytholm - Mr. Jubb came at 9 ¼ - with him while he saw my aunt’s legs - going on very well - the sore of one quite healed and that of the other very nearly healed - better to set an issue - this to be done the next time Mr. J- comes - breakfast at 10 ½ in ¾ hour - off to H-x at 11 ¾ - down the old bank to Mr. Parker’s office he said he had had the £4,000 since the 13th and hoped I should not object to date the bond that day - no! signed the bond dated the 13th instant for £4000 at 4 ¼ p.c. to Mr. Wainhouse - told Messrs. P- and A- to let both A- and myself have each our bill up to the present time -asked they could prove the letter to A-‘s tenant Lister the surgeon - yes! turned to the copy of it - clearly a permission to stay if he paid £40 per annum rent - said that as he had returned no answer A- would take his silence as consent and if he did not pay the additional rent would make distress for it when due - Messrs. P- and A-  smiled but did not deny that this might be done - Mr. P- said Farrer had said he would gladly pay A- more rent for the courtyard and would make an opening thro’ it for the Hatter’s fold people if she would let him set the gate so as to open into the Black horse yard - went with Mr. P- to the spot - then to Farrer’s house and saw himself - said he had better make A- an offer for the Hatter’s fold cottages - to make a reasonable offer, and then there would be a chance of A-‘s agreeing it - but to make up his mind, and let Mr. Parker know - A- to sign the Bouldshaw coal-lease some day soon when Mr. P- to call upon her here - from Mr. Parker’s went to the Bank - having paid Mr. P- on account of Northgate and William Green’s cottage £105, and having received of him Mr. P- £45 in country notes, paid into the bank £3850 and left my banking book to be settled up to the present time and called for it after I had been at Whitley’s - bought at Whitley Bentley’s little book on the history of the Halifax Gibbet law - and bought also a little work by Watt on Joint Stock banks returned up the old bank and back at 2 ½ - A- had set off about ½ hour before on her pony to Cliff hill - I out from 2 ½ to 6 - Mark Hepworth himself and yesterday and today and his one horse cart, and Frank and my own gray horse one horse cart at the cutting (levelling the court down to the level of the garden walk) away in front of the north parlour - they got thro’ into the garden yesterday Robert Mann + 5 - dinner at 6 ½ - got up from table to go to Robert Mann and co. for a few minutes to shew them where to put the 2nd thorn at this end of the wood (Trough of bolland) on the new cart stuff on the north side on entering the wood from the house - they had planted one large thorn just before I went to them (since 6pm) both the thorns taken from the opposite side of the road - A- and I walked out from 8 to 9 - then with my aunt both of us till 10 - very fine day - John Booth returned from Market Weighton this afternoon where he had taken Marian’s things in the carting - he entered my service .:. today

2024 Trevor Hudgins Award Top 15 Watch List Released
Kansas City, MO – The National Awards Committee and Small College Basketball are proud to announce the Trevor Hudgins Award Top 15 Watch List for the 2023-24 season. After the announcement of the creation of the award in November, 2023-24 marks the inaugural season for the award. The award will be presented annually to the senior who has had the finest overall career within Small College Basketball. John McCarthy had this to say about the Top 15 Watch List:
"Congratulations to all 15 players on the Trevor Hudgins Award Watch List,” mentioned McCarthy. “This is, obviously, an elite group of players that have had tremendous collegiate careers, entirely at the small college level. Thank you to our National Awards Committee for their insight on many players from throughout the country." Considerations for the Trevor Hudgins Award are overall career statistics and achievements, team achievements, awards, and personal character. The player must have played his entire career at the small college level. This is the highest award given to a four-year (or five-year) player within Small College Basketball. The video of the finalists will be released on Friday April 5, and the award winner will be announced through a video presentation on Monday April 8, at halftime of the NCAA Division I National Championship Game.
The award is named in honor of Northwest Missouri State’s Trevor Hudgins, who had a historic career with the Bearcats. He led the Bearcats to three consecutive NCAA Division II National Championships. During his career, Hudgins started in every game and never missed one. He also never lost an NCAA Tournament game, leading the Bearcats to a remarkable 17-0 record in the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Hudgins was named the NCAA Division II Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons in 2021 and 2022. He holds both the NWMSU scoring and assists records and finished his career with 2,829 points, which ranks first all time in the 110 year history of the MIAA.
The Trevor Hudgins Award is sponsored by Northwest Missouri State University, Northwest Missouri State Alumni Association, the Scribner Family Foundation Fund, Windmill Benefits and the Kansas State Credit Union.

@gumnut-logic 's FABFiveFeb Challenge
Prompt Two - Gordon [2/2]
A part two, because it's Valentine's Day and Gordon Day and because I couldn't do this challenge without getting my girl in somewhere, could I
---
["how did you do that?" (Sorta)]
---
Tumblr media
---
If we make it or we don't we won't be alone
---
An explosion hangs, frozen, in the middle of their living room, and they creep around it -- Gordon and the people his father trusted -- staring and eyes averted all at once.
In the distance someone is crying, wailing, and Gordon can't tell from here if it's Alan or Scott and he doesn't really want to know. Doesn't know what he'd do with the information if he did. Doesn't know how to help anyone, least of all himself, and a fine rescue operative he's gonna make.
Just standing there. Beached.
Not that anyone else is doing much better.
Brains, a little man with a terrible stutter and an IQ higher than every remaining Tracy combined, is muttering to himself, head in his hands, as though he can theorise his dad back to life. Kyrano looks fifty years older, his face gaunt and his hands shaking as he struggles to lift a teacup to his lips. Shock, Grandma had said, eyes fiercely bright and brandishing the teapot like a weapon. It's shock. Shock doesn't seem like the right sort of word to Gordon. Not big enough to encompass everything his father was and now suddenly, violently isn't.
Kayo is back too, refusing to meet Gordon's eyes and hovering over her father as if he might disappear into thin air if she dares to blink.
Maybe he will. Nothing seems impossible to Gordon now, except maybe tomorrow.
"A bad business," says the man Gordon doesn't know, shaking his head. "Terrible, terrible."
The man, British and with jowls to match, had arrived in a navy blue Bentley equipped with VTOL accompanied by a dour looking grey-haired man in a chauffeur's hat and a solemn young girl who's kept her hands neatly folded in her lap the entire time they've been there.
John is supposed to be coming to speak to them. Or Scott. Somebody who knows what to say. Somebody who knows why they're here.
No one has appeared, and the teapot's shaking in his grandmother's hand. The wailing has faded to sobs. The dry, painful sort that come when the pain outweighs the ability.
"Most distressing."
Understatement. Another Brit speciality.
"Excuse me," he says in his best media voice, gently pitched, calm as can be, "I think I'm going to be sick."
---
He retches over a cliff edge, nails digging into the dirt and knees ground raw against stone. Tears track their way over a grubby face and he rocks back into his heels, twists weeds through his fingers and tries to remember how to breathe the way his coaches taught him.
Yesterday. God, yesterday. A lifetime ago. Behind him he hears the scuffle of feet, and he scrubs at his eyes. He hasn't seen a brother, yet. He can't. He doesn't --
He hasn't any words for any of them.
He doesn't need them yet. Yet. Because it's the girl, shoving her way through the undergrowth, blue eyes bright, her lip between her teeth.
He looks up and she looks down and -- oh.
And Gordon is broken and Gordon is wrecked. Hollowed out and mentally howling and about thirty seconds from launching himself into the ocean and letting it carry him away, but Gordon is also not blind.
"Penelope," she says, and some part of him takes that word and locks it away. Marks it for later, highlighted and underlined. "I'm so pleased to finally meet you. I'm just awfully sorry about the circumstances."
She's older than him, a bit. Not enough to make it weird or anything, but enough that he doesn't quite know how to take the hand she rests on his shoulder or the look in her eyes.
"You've heard of me, then."
"Your reputation precedes you," she says, and then, "My father worked for your father. It's my intention to work for you and your brothers."
And there it is. The first outright admission of what Gordon's known since that first, awful, moment. This is his life now. This island. The machines beneath. This girl.
"You an engineer?"
"Hardly," she scoffs. "My duty is to smooth the way for International Rescue. To benefit the parts of the world that engines alone cannot reach."
"Yeah? And how do you do that?"
"I have my ways." She says it with the hint of a smile, and he oughtn't like it -- it ought to feel wrong. Gross, in this place of abject misery. But it doesn't and he does and he tries one for himself.
His face creaks, but his heart lifts, just a tiny bit.
"Kayo will like you."
"Everyone likes me." She tosses her hair over her shoulder and drops down next to him. "That's the secret."
"To what?"
She does smile then, and it's warm. Warmer than the sun on his back. The warmest he'll feel for a while  "You'll see."

Oberlin BPI: A Chat with Ian Plansker
Tumblr media
During the past two weeks at Oberlin Conservatory, the annual Baroque Performance Institute brought in nearly 75 people, ranging in age from the 14-year-old former boy soprano to the 92-year-old Baroque violinist, intent on honing their skills with the institute’s 20 internationally acclaimed faculty.
Oberlin’s Baroque Performance Institute is a two-week-long workshop with a focus on the performance of period pieces with Baroque instruments and voice. BPI offers expert coaching and master classes, and concludes with a student-performed concert. Participants range in experience—from seasoned performers to those new to the world of Baroque performance.
We spoke with one of the younger participants, 15-year-old harpsichordist and composer Ian Plansker, who got the opportunity to perform in and hear a read-through of the opera he composed over this past year. He wrote The Spectres after attending the 2018 BPI. (portrait by Oli Bentley; performance photos Dale Preston)
What drew you to start composing in the Baroque style?
When I first started composing, it was because I saw composition as a different and perhaps more effective way to alter the course of music in history. Not only do I find it very mentally stimulating and entertaining in a sense, but I also see it as a very effective way to make my mark on music and hopefully bring a lot of joy to other people. In seventh grade, I wrote a piece for my school’s orchestra and the joy that I saw people experience was such an enthralling moment that I was really encouraged to keep composing.
In terms of writing in the Baroque style, I think it came more or less with my fascination with that era of music. I find there is so much color and diversity of sound in Baroque music, and I sought to capture that in my own composition, which is really why I started writing in that idiom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How has the BPI influenced you as a musician?
Before attending Oberlin’s BPI, I knew that I really enjoyed period performance but I had no idea that it was such a viable career in today’s world. After attending BPI and being encouraged by all of the fantastic faculty there, I learned that it’s definitely a viable career. The community in the historical performance world seems a lot more welcoming and open to me, less competitive, and I find that really inviting. They’re all so smart; you can have countless conversations. There’s so much to learn and so much to know in the historical performance world. I had no idea there were other people in the world that would sing Rameau opera chaconnes with me at 1 o’clock in the morning!
So let’s talk about your opera, The Spectres. What influenced your writing?
I knew that I wanted to write some sort of large-scale vocal piece in the Baroque style at some point. I wasn’t entirely sure that a performance would be possible. But, I figured I may as well try writing something for BPI and see what could happen.
I took a lot of inspiration from the “ballad operas” of 18th-century England, which was a genre coined by John Gay and Johann Pepusch. They are operas that combine a lot of aspects of plays within them—so you’ll have musical numbers and then acting, and then musical numbers. The reason I chose that style specifically was because when Gay was writing ballad operas, he was writing them more for the people and less for the aristocrats. That’s how it previously was in the Drury Lane and Covent Garden theaters in England. I thought that would be a great way to, perhaps, start a new trend in writing historical operas because I think that would be a great thing to have in the historical performance world. I wrote it over the course of three months.
How did the read-through of The Spectres feel?
It was amazing! I had no idea that the singers we would be working with were as expressive and as skilled as they were. And, all of the violinists and the gambists were terrific, as well. Everyone was very enthusiastic about doing it, which is really what I love to see when I’m doing these sorts of projects. When the orchestra members have a good time and enjoy playing the music, I know that message becomes apparent to the audience and that energy transfers between the two.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What advice would you give to aspiring composers?
Don’t give up! The first year and a half, everything I wrote was abominable. I look back and it’s filled with countless errors. I think the biggest thing that helped me improve was just to continue writing. I learned from my mistakes. Also, a very important thing is to learn the tools of composition. Even if you are going to write in modern styles, I think if you read the treatises and the texts from what was considered proper composition of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, you can start to go in a new direction that is unique to yourself while still maintaining an overall sense of coherency in your music. That can help you create more powerful work.

A tribute to college football’s greatest floppers
Tumblr media
Let’s appreciate the young men who instill some theater into our sport.
Flopping makes lots of people very mad, no matter which sport it happens in.
Life is better if you pick your battles, though. There’s no rule that you have to get mad about players pretending things happened that didn’t really happen. You don’t get mad about play action passes, do you? They aren’t real passes! The quarterback is a fraud and a liar!
I realize it’s frustrating to see your team get unfairly flagged, sure. But whenever it happens to anybody else, it seems the most emotionally healthy reaction is to laugh. So let’s try and laugh!
Qaadir Sheppard, Ole Miss
Does this remind you of anything?
Tumblr media
Because it looks exactly like The Rock selling a Stone Cold Stunner to me.
Tumblr media
And now Sheppard wants his hardware:

Johnny Adams, Michigan State
An example of a more subdued effort.
youtube
Seemingly faked injuries: always a tricky topic
Fans immediately lose their minds whenever their team is moving the ball but gets interrupted by an unusual number of defenders on the ground between plays. Using injury delays intentionally to stall an offense has happened before, of course. Cal admitted this one:
youtube
But plenty of those injuries that fans were certain about were actually legit.
This big fella hitting the deck in order to deal with one of his shoes falling off, however, was both a flop and an actual emergency:
youtube
Whatever happened here
This one was too confusing to say Michigan QB John O’Korn definitely flopped. We had eight different theories at the time, and I’m sticking by the one about the staffer on the left hitting O’Korn with the Force.
The O'Korn flop deserves an Oscar pic.twitter.com/fdj0Kfhany
— Clay Wendler (@ClayWendler) October 8, 2017
William James, Chapman
Lots of players flop, and defenders fake injuries, but none of them can go full SOCCER ANGUISH quite like a punter can.
youtube
Rashaan Gaulden, Tennessee
In 2016, the man who’d become a legend by flipping off a horde of Bama fans got a Florida player ejected for hurtling Back And To The Left after being tapped on the face mask. That makes him a flipper and a flopper, I’m afraid.
Tumblr media
Daniel Bituli, Tennessee
This is one of the silliest ones, for two reasons:
Bituliu’s gently waving hands during his long, leisurely plummet to the turf. Hello everyone, this is your captain speaking, and we are currently on our descent approach to the ground. We’ll be landing shortly. The weather in Lexington is angry.
Both players were ejected for this because the entire rosters had been hit with unsportsmanlike flags earlier in the game.
Incredible flop. pic.twitter.com/HEn61DjyaI
— Scott Charlton (@Scott_Charlton) October 29, 2017
Bradley Chubb, NC State
A notorious goofball, the eventual first-rounder turned a moment in a chippy Syracuse game into the scene from Hot Rod where the guy’s falling down the side of a hill for so long, it goes past being funny and becomes not funny and then becomes funny and then repeats that whole cycle two more times and ends up funny.
Tumblr media
Kenyan Drake, Alabama
This against Michigan State was a noteworthy flop ...
I hope Alabama loses. pic.twitter.com/yTT00oKFKd

... but:
Which was the worse flop?

Bret Bielema, Arkansas HEAD COACH
HEAD COACH.
Bret Bielema appears to instigate a penalty on an Alabama player, flops and celebrates. http://t.co/S4xrEkN7wjpic.twitter.com/TkB2ufUUNb

The HEAD COACH did that.
Jamal Adams, LSU
And now, the GOAT.
Note the complete lack of hesitation once he’s nudged by Ole Miss’ QB. BAM.
Tumblr media
Adams trusts his instincts. He also trusts gravity. That instant reaction time is what sets him apart from other floppers. There is no deliberation. It’s time to flop. DOWN WE GO.
Watch him in action against Florida two weeks later in 2014, with his victory lap after this one continuing to 2018:
I've always admired and learned from greatness... @KingJames thank you for showing the way! pic.twitter.com/2A4vOPeMu7

OK, potentially I’m preparing a correlation at this point, but take note of me out and about. It is a suspicious coincidence which during the first decade about Starbucks’ everyday life, there was furthermore the your pregnancy of a substantial study with humanistic education by Donald N. Aspy and Botanica N. Roebuck. This learn spanned the particular 1970s as well as focused on student-centered learning, an element of which is college choice.
Today, I’m never equating typically the import regarding weighing the options are in caffeinated beverage using one’s option in how to display screen knowledge of your articles area, but it surely seems to people that sooner or later, there was your shift inside expectation in your culture past school of which soon became reflected inside school in addition.
Right from “Just Ask Us: Small children Speak On Student Engagement” by Heather Wolpert-Gawron According to the university student engagement online survey, student option is listed as one of the most hiring strategies a good teacher makes it possible for in the classroom. Want to know how to participate students, enthuse them, as well as bring out their effort? Wish ways to recognize organically? Let them have a express in their choices. In a world that less than listens to one another, listen to this students. In the system which can be a ton of top rated down, let your classroom become one that allows for voices so that you can trickle upwards. We have, with our very classes, the mind that will solve the problems about tomorrow, but for give them training means we must give all their neurons to be able to solve the of today.
Student solution builds property in the learning.
Student preference allows students to display their learning in how that they sense best signifies their information.
Student option enforces correct differentiation.
The educational Benefits of Learner Choice
John Bentley (2016) of the Profit Institute associated with Education (BIE) is an professional in pupil choice mainly because it is a seriously rooted take into account project-based discovering, the method at the heart of your Buck Initiate. He feels that student choice furthermore redefines the position of trainer from information authority for you to learning instruction. He affirms that
engagement is a open fire that can swiftly die out there when issues get taking on. That’s in which it’s important to build in learner voice plus choice and also concepts for sustained issue and assess and rechnungsprufung. With pupil voice plus choice, educators are handling the work with students possibly not controlling it again. If a college or squad wants to obtain a certain angle on a activity they can— given it aligns with the purpose of the assignment…. Students frequently respond well, liking the liberty.
In fact , pupil choice is essential to BIE that it features included them in the rubric it works by using to assess contraptions of investigation to ensure that scholar choice is encouraged and made use of. The rubric itself advances the belief that
Pick + Agent = Knowing
term paper writing services It suggests teachers to assess whether “Students have for you to express words and choice on crucial matters (questions asked, text messages and assets used, shed pounds work with, goods to be made, use of time frame, organization connected with tasks)” (Davis, 2016).
From “Just Ask Individuals: Kids Chat Out on College student Engagement” by just Heather Wolpert-Gawron That ambiguity connected with student preference can bully any coach, but can be described as surmountable dread and a dread that must be challenged. In terms of generating evidence of awareness, the intense structure of “do this, for example this” simply as successful as “what way might best be good enough? ”
Together with research en retrait up what are the students currently have long acknowledged. Results with a 2010 learn show that if
students got a choice of groundwork they documented higher intrinsic motivation for you to do homework, felt more capable regarding the fantasy, and conducted better within the unit experiment compared with every time they did not have a relatively choice. Additionally , a phenomena suggested that will having selections enhanced home work completion times compared with as soon as no selections were given. (Patall, Cooper, & Wynn, 2010)
The theory connected with consuming information and facts in a single, teacher-prescribed way, also may not play into the good points of each and every individual. The good news is that there is guidance to choose from to help professors select the correct elements of their valuable teaching by which to offer selection.
In fact , homework proves of which student decision increases equally engagement plus motivation intended for tween, young adults, and in basic fact, all age group levels. As per Robert Marzano, “When granted choice simply by teachers, trainees perceive class activities seeing that more important. Solution in the classroom been specifically linked to rises in college effort, project performance, and subsequent learning” (Marzano Exploration, n. debbie. ). Marzano goes on in order to report this granting scholars choice straight aligns using student proposal. He promotes teachers to provide choice inside following:
– Tasks to accomplish charge cards Ways to article a few. Establishing their own learning objectives
This usually promote a lot more ownership into their learning and also outcomes. Marzano further advocates the following:
Being a choice of mission to pupils, a tutor can provide many different task alternatives on an assessment and ask college students to respond for the one that pastimes them many. Similarly, a teacher supplies students together with the option to pick out their own business format. The two main most common report generation formats tend to be written and also oral information…. However , college students may also elect to present material through discusiones, video studies, demonstrations, or even dramatic presentations. To give learners a particularly potent choice, a good teacher may ask individuals to create their very own learning goals and objectives. When getting students the chance to design their own individual learning objectives, a mentor should store students to blame for both their own self-identified understanding goal and also teacher-identified studying goals regarding unit.
Enabling students a number of choice of their learning is actually clearly exhibiting successful. Around 2008, a meta-analysis has been conducted simply by Patall, Cooper, and Velupe (n. m. ) in which examined 41 studies for the topic. “Results indicated that providing alternative enhanced innate motivation, energy, task operation, and perception of competence, amid other influences, ” as outlined by its authors.
But all of our goals for the students are certainly all helpful. We need individuals to learn steps to make decisions, how to weigh possibilities, and how to supporter for their thoughts. Therefore , if we are to support develop college students into people, we need to comprise of choice in the form of vital tactic toward which will goal.
Alfie Kohn (2010) believes which will
the brain benefits of manipulate are, if perhaps anything, further pronounced. Everything else being same, emotional modification is better with time for people who practical knowledge a sense of self-determination; by contrast, couple of things steer more dependably to melancholy and other different types of psychological soreness than a a sense of helplessness…. The fact remains that, whenever we want small children to take duty for their own personal behavior, we have to first allow them to have responsibility, and many of it. The way in which a child understands how to make actions is by generating decisions, definitely not by following manuals.
School is a place to aid train scholars to handle your options that lifestyle throws at them; whenever anything, you should be encouraging any excess opportunities as they possibly can for students to function that muscle mass in the gym that is certainly school.
To get ideas for easy methods to offer selection in your in-class, check out Heather’s companion document, “What Giving Students Pick Looks Like in their classroom. ”

Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/Photos Police Handouts“I’m teaching a bunch of little brats next year.”—Jeffrey Epstein, 1974-75 Dalton School YearbookIt took a clandestine FBI-NYPD joint sting operation to arrest the elusive convicted sex offender Jeffrey E. Epstein on Saturday July 6th on the tarmac of Teterboro airport in New Jersey (a story first broken by The Daily Beast). Simultaneously, a sledgehammer was used to break the entry to his massive $77 million New York City townhouse on East 71st Street. Police recovered hundreds, possibly thousands, of nude images of young women and girls—an automatic legal problem for a man who is on multiple sex offender registries. Epstein’s case may be one of the most extreme cases of organized child abuse in modern history.Epstein is without doubt the wealthiest individual on any sex offender registry in the United States (and he is at Level 3—at greatest risk of abusing more children). On his registry entry, the following residences are listed: his $7.8 million 70-acre private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands (his primary residence owned by his Delaware-based LLC, L.S.J.), his Paris apartment on Avenue Foch (one of the most expensive addresses in the world), his $15.5 million Palm Beach estate, his $77 million New York City townhouse (a gift from Victoria’s Secret founder Leslie Wexner), and his $10 million castle/ranch in New Mexico. At the bottom of his residences is another island in the Virgin Islands, Great St. James. Epstein purchased it in 2016 for $18 million and was actively (and without permit) developing an even larger compound on its 165 acres—that is, until his arrest this past Saturday. As far as vehicles, his offender registry entries list two Gulfstream jets (though his lawyers say he sold one of them in June), two helicopters, nine Mercedes-Benzes, nine Chevy Suburbans, three Cadillac Escalades, three Harley-Davidsons, one $375k Bentley Mulsanne, a jet-ski, and other assorted items. He has wined and dined American presidents, princes, elite academics, socialites, corporate CEOs and other VIPs. His alleged victims were little girls, often economically destitute or runaways or orphans—from sixth graders to high-school sophomores. Because his alleged crimes span multiple decades, his victims likely number in the hundreds—or more.* * *“Unnoticed by almost everybody, travelling with her was a greying, plumpish, middle-aged American businessman who managed to avoid the photographers.” —Mail on Sunday, Nov. 15, 1992 (London edition)That businessman was Jeffrey Epstein. In the early 1990s, British newspapers that followed British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell (alleged to be Epstein’s chief procurer of victims) tried to figure out who Epstein was. The Mail on Sunday asked in 1992: “But what is he—property developer, concert pianist, math teacher, corporate treasure hunter, stockbroker, merchant banker or globe-trotting businessman?” No one seemed to know.Given Epstein’s apparent mystique, I checked New York City’s birth, census, and marriage records to be certain about the facts. Epstein was born Jan. 20 1953 in Brooklyn, NY. His parents were Paula (nee Stolofsky, 1918-2004) and Seymour G. Epstein (1916-1991) and they were married in Brooklyn in 1952—shortly before Jeffrey Epstein’s birth.Epstein grew up during the 1950s and 1960s in the Lafayette neighborhood around Coney Island, as documented by James Patterson, John Connolly, and Tim Malloy in their 2016 book on Epstein, Filthy Rich. Epstein attended the now-shuttered Lafayette High School, a working-class high school that produced a significant number of professional baseball players. Epstein’s mother, Paula, was a homemaker while his father, Seymour, worked for the New York City Parks Department as a groundskeeper and gardener. During their retirement years, Epstein’s parents (as well as several maternal aunts) resided in nearby properties he purchased in West Palm Beach. In 1991, Epstein’s father passed away at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio at the age of 75. His mother passed away in 2004 at age 85 in Palm Beach.Epstein has a younger brother, Mark (“Puggy”), who has joined him in real-estate deals throughout the years. Mark operates a real-estate business, OSSA Properties, which owns some of the properties—including the apartments in the 301 East 66th Street building—where Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged sex slaves and other employees were housed (real-estate ownership between the brothers may have commingled).Jeffrey Epstein graduated from Lafayette High School in 1969 at age 16, having skipped two grades. He was “chubby with curly hair and a high, ‘hee-hee’ kind of laugh,” according to Filthy Rich. In the fall of 1969, Epstein started at Cooper Union and studied there for two years until the spring semester of 1971. Many writers say he attended New York University (NYU) after Cooper Union, but they rarely give specific dates. I decided to verify through National Student Clearinghouse records exactly when Epstein went to college and where. Cooper Union does not participate in the National Clearinghouse, but NYU does. It turned out that Epstein was enrolled at NYU between September of 1971 and June of 1974. Thus, most of Epstein’s college study years were spent at NYU. I verified that he did not graduate from NYU with their registrar. In a 2002 profile in New York magazine, Thomas Landon reported that Epstein studied at NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. It is not clear why Epstein attended two institutions of higher education but did not graduate from either. When Epstein joined the board of Rockefeller University, he misrepresented his educational and employment background; a press release stated that he had “studied physics at Cooper Union in New York and then joined Bear Stearns, becoming a Limited Partner until 1981.” Between Cooper Union and Bear Stearns, Epstein studied at NYU and was a teacher for two years (two unreported and significant events). When a convicted sex offender facing sex-trafficking charges was first employed as a teacher, it bears at least some scrutiny.* * *After the summer of 1974, Epstein began working as a teacher of mathematics and physics at the Dalton School in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It has been reported that he began there in 1973, but this is incorrect. I searched the 1973-74 Dalton yearbook and there is no mention of Jeffrey Epstein. I then searched Dalton’s school newspaper and found in the September 1974 issue that “... Mr. Epstein, who will also teach physics, [has] also joined the department this year.” Epstein also confirmed that he taught there between 1974 and 1976 in a deposition. In the United States, there are various schools that educate children from the social upper classes—Kent School, Horace Mann, Miss Porter’s. Dalton is among that set. These schools are often restricted to children from the “old money” stratum in society, with a small number of scholarship students or athletes from non-elite backgrounds. In 1974, Dalton was run by headmaster Donald Barr—father of Attorney General William Barr, whose Justice Department recently began a review of Epstein’s 2007 non-prosecution agreement for the Palm Beach child sexual assault charges. Writers have noted the interesting coincidence. However, Donald Barr resigned in turmoil in February of 1974 (according to the March 14, 1974 issue of The Daltonian) which was seven months before Jeffrey Epstein began teaching there that fall. While it is possible that Donald Barr may have hired Epstein, if he made personnel decisions long in advance, the Dalton School lost four math teachers (according to The Daltonian) prior to the 1974-75 school year. Therefore the school may have hired Epstein, in part, out of an urgent need to fill vacant positions—even though Epstein did not have a college degree.Peter Branch was the acting headmaster after Barr’s departure and he may have hired Epstein. Full verification would require access to Dalton’s personnel records, if they still retain them. I put a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request into the State of New York Department of Education and they reported having no teaching license on file for Epstein—this may suggest that he was not planning on a career in teaching. Unlike public schools, it should be noted, a private school like Dalton does not require its teachers to possess a state teaching license or certificate. While at the Dalton School, Epstein was the coach of the math team. In competitions with several local schools, Epstein led the students to victory in one instance and to second place in another. At a February 1976 math meet, the Dalton team competed against Ramaz and the Manhattan Talmudic Academy with “Boss Epstein watching from the sidelines…” (The Daltonian March 5, 1976). At another match up in April 1976, Epstein told his team “a victory would be as easy as Pi.” The paper reported Epstein would be starting a “math-track team” the following year due to his “unique philosophy of integrating physical exercise with spiritual and mathematical stimulation.” The Dalton School students and families are comprised of some of the wealthiest families in the United States—unlike Epstein’s own. But this access may have created an opening for him.As a young man from a working-class neighborhood in Brooklyn (equipped with a deep Brooklyn accent), Jeffrey Epstein at Dalton likely had to be a “quick study” to gracefully flow among the social upper class. Vicky Ward’s 2003 Vanity Fair profile of Epstein deemed him “The Talented Mr. Epstein”—drawing a parallel to Matt Damon’s character in the 1999 film The Talented Mr. Ripley, where Tom Ripley cons his way into the upper class through fraud and misrepresentation (and plenty of piano playing). To wit, the April 1975 issue of The Daltonian covered a Parent-Teacher Association event, “the first parent-faculty musical in recent memory,” noting that “Mr. Epstein proved himself to be the ivory show man on the piano.” Was Epstein wooing and dazzling the parents as a means of gaining access to their rarefied world? It seems to have worked because a parent wondered what he was doing there and put him in touch with the chairman of Bear Stearns, Ace Greenberg (whose children also attended Dalton; Epstein may have tutored them). After the 1975-1976 school year was finished, Epstein informed the school he was not returning and began his career on Wall Street at Bear Stearns. After just four years, on August 1, 1980, Bear Stearns published an advert in The Wall Street Journal listing all the people who had made limited partner, including Jeffrey E. Epstein (along with people such as Larry Kudlow, former CNBC commentator and current director of the National Economic Council). Epstein, it seemed, was on the path, to accumulating the economic riches necessary for entry into the one percent. Obtaining the social graces required for acceptance by the social upper class would come much later with the help of several socialites, but mostly Ghislaine Maxwell.* * *Epstein was permitted to plead guilty to charges of soliciting prostitution in 2008 in the State of Florida. However, his victims were children, and it has been widely pointed out, cannot give consent, and therefore cannot be prostitutes. (Epstein’s lawyers tried to tarnish and humiliate the victims at the time by calling them “prostitutes,” and, as Vanity Fair revealed, Epstein reportedly smeared the underage girls in private as “prostitutes and strippers who’d already been indoctrinated into the sex world.”) Such lax charges in the Florida case, compared to what he is now facing, were hashed out in a deal with Florida State Attorney Barry Krischer, in conjunction with Alexander Acosta (who just stepped down as President Trump's labor secretary over his role in the Epstein saga). The deal was protested by the highly professional Palm Beach police led by Chief Michael Reiter and the late Detective Joseph Recarey. Epstein’s 2019 charges are for crimes committed in New York and Florida between 2002 and 2005. However, there are allegations against Epstein from earlier time periods (such as Maria Farmer’s 2019 sworn affidavit that she and her 15-year old sibling were assaulted by Epstein and Maxwell in various locations in 1996—allegations that were reportedly nixed by an editor from Vicky Ward’s 2003 profile of Epstein). One thing to keep in mind is Epstein was a school teacher and would have had possible access to victims there as well. There are no reports that he did anything at Dalton school, but he was asked about his relations with students in a deposition in 2009 and here is what he said:Deposition His answer about the ages of his students is noteworthy. He replies “Mostly old—mostly 17 and 18.” This tells us that Epstein thinks that the ages of 17 and 18 are “old.” He is asked what subject he was teaching, and he answers truthfully, physics and mathematics. The attorney asks if any of the girls he was teaching were under age 17 at the time, and Epstein answers that he does not know—this sounds genuine. Things take a turn when the attorney asks Epstein if he had any sexual contact with any students at Dalton. Epstein answers the first time with a question, “Again?” He is asked a second time and again answers with a question, “While I was a teacher?” The attorney says yes, let’s start with that question and Epstein gives a solid “no.” The attorney presses “How about after?” and Epstein says “Not that I remember.”In summary, Epstein revealed that he feels high-school students aged 17 to 18 years are “old” and he that he does not remember if he had sexual contact with Dalton students after he was a teacher there. The final time he is asked, he reads from a statement in which he claims that the attorney’s law firm is engaged in fraud and then pleads his Fifth Amendment rights. Questions about sexual contact with Dalton students appear to be sensitive for him. Epstein depositions are extremely difficult to read because he pleads the Fifth to almost every question—as he eventually does here.* * *Julie Brown of the Miami Herald has done a significant amount of research on the Epstein case with her and her colleagues’ award-winning Perversion of Justice series. The extensive reporting in the Miami Herald, The Daily Beast, and by independent journalists like Ed Opperman, Pearse Redmond, William Ramsey and others has likely influenced law enforcement to consider the new evidence uncovered by the press—including possible new locations where recruitment or abuse might have occurred.Related to Epstein’s deposition above, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who accused Epstein of sexually abusing her as an underage girl and loaning her out to his famous friends, claimed that Epstein “lost interest” as she got older and sent her to Thailand to bring him another victim, at which point she says she escaped from Epstein.Another alarming detail about Epstein is reported in Vicky Ward’s 2003 Vanity Fair article. She noted that Epstein left a paperback copy of the Marquis de Sade’s The Misfortunes of Virtue lying on a table at his 71st Street townhouse. Why would Epstein have left this book out in plain view? This obscene novel (even Napoleon ordered its author jailed) is about a 12-year-old French girl, Justine, who travels alone across France and winds up in a monastery and is forced to become the sex slave of monks where she endures repeated sexual assaults and is ordered to participate in orgies. She escapes but suffers similar abuses and encounters as the story follows her life until the age of 26.Justine may have been a pedophile’s fantasy story in which the victim somehow learns “virtue” from what she endures. Justine almost parallels the life of some of Epstein’s alleged victims. What is even more tragic is that in the course of her reporting, Ward found two of Epstein’s victims and their mother. Ward says they detailed in 2003 how Epstein sexually assaulted them in the mid-1990s—including the time when one was allegedly held captive for 12 hours at mogul Leslie Wexner’s Ohio property after she says Epstein and Maxwell assaulted her. (Wexner has not responded to the allegations.) Perhaps their stories might have been able to deter or expose Epstein earlier, if they had been published when the girls first came forward. We can expect a trove of information about Epstein to continue to emerge now that he is in jail. Indeed, the Miami Herald reports that at least a dozen new victims have come forward since his arrest. Epstein and his accomplices may have seen his victims as little girls—but now they are strong, brave women fighting back today.Thomas Volscho is a sociology professor at the City University of New York, College of Staten Island. He has been researching the case of Jeffrey Epstein for a book he is writing.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Jeffrey Epstein Dodged Questions About Sex With His Dalton Prep-School Students
