Gods & Monsters
Tumblr media
Spiciness: 3/5
Romance: 4/5
Overall: 9/10
I just finished reading this book, and it was a significant step up from the second book. If you haven't seen the post about the second book, you should read it and caution spoilers ahead. The pacing in this book is phenomenal. We have plot twist after plot twist, and honestly, I love it. It keeps us on our toes, expecting one thing but then getting something completely different, which is impressive. They wanted to discuss various themes in this book. It didn't have as much of a religious theme as it usually did in past books. It was still there but less prominent than the past ones. The themes in this book are more about feminism and just Lou coping with everything that has happened with Ansel's death from the past book. She is possessed by Nicolina, revealed in the past book, which keeps you on the top of your toes until she eventually gets exercised. Reading was something else in this book. He's always been a comforting character and does something nobody would've expected. It gave us a chance to see them fall in love again, all over again, which is so beautiful, and they just like they let you see how even before they fell in love, and we didn't know that she was a witch chance to say that he knew that she was a witch. He would've fallen in love with her, so even though their relationship was based on a lie; we saw that he loved her, which is a beautiful thing in my opinion and a significant spoiler I'd like to say when Ansel comes back for the epilogue, and for when Lou was in melaconique Oh, I started crying like I'm over here. My eyes are swollen, such touching sand between Ansel and Lou because you say Ansel was in his final moments like you; you saw that he wanted to help and tried to protect. Still, in reality, he ended up dying; he's an entirely different perspective; when he told Lou that she feared living a life, I started crying because I was like, oh my god, this is so crazy; how is a dead person to get a towel in life person I had a life, but this is a thing that you see all the time when a deceased person or like a ghost or spirit comes back from I don't know like the dead I guess even if it's like a little like a dream I've seen the same not only in like books but also and TV shows, but that's a whole different other conversation. Even in the epilogue, where we see Ansel's point of you and we know the wedding, we see we meet a significant character overseen, and once you realize who that character is, it's so crazy. Some deaths are impactful. I don't want to say who, so I'm sad they are presumed dead. I hope that the duology from Celie’s point of view is as good as this one. I love Celie as a character in this book. She was given so much more character development than in the previous books, which I am also ready for. Even if we get to see her point of you, I want to see what happens with Coco and Bo, like we never were given that closure if they ended up getting together. Like, do they still just banter? Are they so get like I want to know, also, what happened between that time gap between the final battle and the epilogue? Are we ever going to figure it out? Are we ever going to be told? I don't want to get into what happened in the epilogue because I still have many questions, so maybe I may want to say what happens in that blog, but I don't want to spoil it.

Thanks to the Fable app and the publisher for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
✩ 🧛🏻🩸Review:
Mahurin’s newest release is one you’ll want to sink your teeth into!
Picking up six months after where “Gods & Monsters” left off, “The Scarlet Veil” follows Célie Tremblay, the first female Chausseur, as she investigates a string of murders in Cesarine—all of the bodies drained of blood. When she stumbles upon the body of an old friend, however, the investigation becomes personal. Determined to avenge her friend, Célie attracts the attention of the killer and learns that he has special plans for her.
I want to start off this review by talking about my love for Célie. I’ve always admired Lou from the “Serpent & Dove” trilogy for her courage and brazenness. But it wasn’t until I read from Célie’s point-of-view that I felt seen. As Mahurin so beautifully puts it, “she’s softer, more sensitive, even emotional” and she isn’t less strong because of it, as “strength comes in all shapes and sizes, and soft girls aren’t weak.” Célie is such a special character to me for that reason. I am the sensitive girl that feels so deeply. I see so much of myself in Célie and I’m so grateful to Mahurin for that.
Another aspect of the book that I love so much is Célie and Michal’s relationship development. They are actually enemies turned lovers! Despite Michal being a vampire and Célie being a human, the two have fangtastic chemistry. Célie fights against it because she believes him to be a monster and she despises that she even feels drawn to him. Her inner turmoil creates sexual tension that is unmatched and left me craving more long after the novel’s end.
As with her other novels, Mahurin’s world-building in “The Scarlet Veil” is captivating. She does a beautiful job explaining away the absence of the Éternals in her previous works and transporting the reader to the Isle of Requiem. I really enjoyed learning about the history, customs, and abilities associated with Mahurin’s vampires and could not get enough of the nightwalkers making up the ensemble cast.
The element of mystery woven into Mahurin’s dark and fantastical world with the added bonus of vampires make this book my favorite of hers! It is so special and I hope that others will love it as much as I do!

The Lost Book of the White:
“First of all,” said Ragnor, “I am not going to take naming advice from someone who could have chosen any name in the world and went with Magnus Bane.”
Gods and Monsters:
“Ah,yes. King of the forest, the horned god.” Nicholina rocked back and forth, still laughing maniacally. “Out of all his names, he chose Claud.”

yeah yeah you can talk about reid's character development and the difference in the way that he talks about witches from s&d to g&d, but the real character development is the way that some of reid's thoughts are just curse words

Blood & Honey-
Spiciness-🌶️🌶️
Romance-❤️❤️
Overall-6/10
⚠️Spoilers ahead read with caution, like for real do not read ahead because I am talking about major spoilers⚠️
So I just finished reading blood and honey, and I have a lot of feelings towards it, to be frank. The pacing in this book is kind of terrible. The first couple of chapters is slow. We have a whole lot of fluff at first, and then the final chapters are happening just super fast. This book has the second-book syndrome. Don't get me wrong. There are a lot of enjoyable occurred in this book, but it just happened super slow at the beginning, and then I don't know where it paces up. I don't know where I feel like the pacing should've been a little bit better. I expected more. We met a lot of new characters. We met one of them, my comfort character Claude Deveraux. She is hilarious. I love him. He has this energy been reading about him like it's just very calming, and you're just enamored by him.
We meet Coco’s aunt and the blood witches. We meet the werewolves. We also met troupe de fortune. All these eventually become allies, and we see them in the battle at some point. We see Louise becoming a little bit darker. She has to sacrifice a lot of her memories to do magic throughout the book, which makes her a little bit darker, and when I mean darker, I mean she's a little bit more irritable. She becomes a little bit more ruthless. She justifies it by saying she's protecting her family, which I can't explain, but once she accidentally burns Coco, she snaps out. This does happen throughout the book, though, up until the battle. Then Reid is coping with the death of the archbishop and trying to process the fact that he had to kill the Archbishop for Lou Lou and Reid have a lot of fights throughout the book and unspoken conflicts. In the battle, one of our favorite characters dies, and it was heartbreaking because I was crying like a baby. Morgan kills Ansel as a distraction to flee, her punishment from Claude. And the last plot twist that blew my mind was that Nicolina and cocos aunt did a whole 360. They were working with Morgan this entire time, and Nicolina possessed Lou.
