Ooku: The Inner Chambers

Watched this anime on Netflix within 24hrs and I have so many mixed feelings. Lemme just say them and if you’re willing to listen, well read….great! (Possible spoilers??)

FIRST, I hateddddddd this show for the fact how it got me so invested. I know that makes no sense but it honestly was so heart-tugging and also thought provoking as a viewer. (I actually found myself sneaking to watch an episode at work…ahem- ANYWAYS). The way this anime series was written and portrayed was utterly amazing. Honestly when I feel like I’ve been to a funeral at the end of a series that means it was a great show and that is due to a plethora of creativity, writing and consideration of important themes.

SECOND, Yoshimune???? My girl- excuse me, liege came in with a mission and I loved every minute of it! And it was literally minutes because we didn’t see much of her….I was quite upset about that. I actually believe I overall like her more than Iemitsu/Chie….*shrugs* not that I did not enjoy Chie and her development throughout the series but in general, Yoshimune brightened up the series in a way we didn’t really see after we truly delved into Ooku history (which was like episode 3-10).

THIRD, the complex history of the Ooku….was a whirlwind of emotions, politics, and culture/tradition for sure. But the history did show a bit of realism even in the face of an alternative history of what-could-have-been. As a viewer, certain questions came in my head like…“what if no one challenged tradition in the face of desperation to survive?” to “what if Arikoto and Iemitsu/Chie could have just had that one hope among them as a couple in that bedchamber become a reality…?” How much would any of that changed the way things played out? It makes you consider how truly people’s actions and responses have brought good and bad consequences to our world today…not just Edo in the series.

FOURTH, Arikoto and Chie honestly did what they felt was right for others which is selfless in ways that are absolutely admirable…but also, there’s things I absolutely wish they would have done differently. Watching the screen and happy for them one minute and on the verge of tears the next is a feat not every writer can do. Outside looking in….you, as a viewer, can see cracks in their logic…but then, it makes you have sympathy and maybe even empathy for their choices driven by the sake of their beliefs and those who greatly influenced them. It’s such a touching, romantic, but incredibly SAD story between them but one thing was always clear is that they were deeply in love with each other until the end. ❤️

It’s a reference to a line on Schitt’s Creek. If you’ve not watched it, in the episode ‘olive branch’ David is given a box of chocolates (among other gifts) and at one point offers to give the chocolates back, as he still has most of them left. He later admits, “I was lying about the chocolates, I ate them all”

I felt far too seen in that moment to not use it haha. My spouse literally hides the chocolate in my house because otherwise I would absolutely devour it all in one sitting!!

“What’s this?”

Conrad drops the newspaper clippings he was shuffling through, turning to face The Fix. He dangles a small circle of woven thread. Conrad’s eyes flick over the pipe it’d been hanging from. Over the months, he’d completely forgotten about it.

“It’s—Well, it’s silly…” Conrad shrugs, trails off. The Fix doesn’t put it down “Okay, uh… It’s a friendship bracelet. I made some for me and Justin, but I bought too much thread. I didn’t want to waste it. So I made a third… just in case.”

“Just in case?”

“Yeah.” Conrad shrugs. Then, quietly. “In case someone like you came along.”

The Fix nods. Swallows. Conrad turns away, embarrassed. 

He doesn’t notice until they’ve left, ready to meet up with the others, that The Fix actually wears it. It’s much too small to be a bracelet, of course, but it sits on the Fix’s pinky.

Just right.

what im realizing about lime more and more (and especially in contrast to taffy) is how uhhh not vocal he is about how he feels when it comes to romantic emotions (which i know isnt a big surprise but ive been meditating on it A LOT recently, and actually working it into his character a lot more. i am increasing the romantic muzzle on him)

so SAME I WANT HIM TO SO BAD!!!!!!!!!! and it would take SO MUCH for him to work up enough guts to say it to her (even if its a short 2 second sentence or something)

but what sucks is that mochi will still think hes just saying it to be nice or to make her feel better, so shed smile and say like "haha thanks" to move the conversation away from it, but he could TELL RIGHT AWAY that she doesnt believe him and essentially dismissed it and it PISSES HIM OFF SO BAD!!!!! HES LIKE "I was struggling for THREE DAYS to figure out how to tell her or if I should tell her and I get a shitty 'haha thanks'??? Shes just brushing it off???!!"

which would actually probably lead to a really cute moment because the irritation would fuel him enough to grab her arm and DRILL IT INTO HER HEAD that hes not kidding or saying it to be nice or something. think full on, youre-the-most-beautiful-thing-ive-ever-seen-in-my-life-any-guy-would-chop-off-his-own-arm-just-to-speak-to-you-for-five-seconds-youre-so-drop-dead-gorgeous kind of rambling, the whole time her face is like. slowly increase the saturation slider to red.

and it starts getting into DANGEROUS territory for him because hes not necessarily filtering anything hes saying and it starts to sound a little less like "You are an objectively pretty girl" speech, and sounds more like a "I am attracted to you" kind of speech

#(any guy would chop off his arm just to speak to you for five seconds--) meanwhile oscar and coco eavesdropping #and oscar is like (uhhh im pretty sure no one would do that. what is he saying??) #at the end of it he looks down and he didnt even realize he started holding her hand instead of her arm #rips his hand away so fast and ends it with (but idk) just in case #by the way this happens before he realizes he likes her #so afterwards hes like (what the hell was i fucking saying...?? where did that all come from??) #and mochi is.................... #he altered the chemistry of her brain from that moment onward #whenever shes zoning out she starts flashing back to that #(he thinks im pretty....)
