lately i have been thinking about code name verity once again. what if we met on a world war 2 airfield and our friendship was forged in the fire of bombs and blood and death you invited me into your world in a whimsical scottish castle and i invited you into my world in the sky and you were an interrogator and you were almost chocked to death by a prisoner and i held you while you cried and in those fleeting moments in each other's arms everything was beautiful in spite of the horrors but then we crash landed in france and you got captured by the nazis and you thought i was dead and you told the story of our friendship to keep me alive in your head while you committed one final act of heroic self sacrifice and then you asked me to kill you via homoerotic code so you didn't have to get tortured to death and after i shot you the story you wrote about us was the only thing keeping you alive to me. and we were both girls.

For as many tv/movie adaptations of WWII stories that exist, it boggles my mind that no one has adapted Code Name Verity (or any of the other books by that author) yet. It has everything you could possibly want in a story: spies, plot twists, interrogations, unreliable narrators, tragedy, lady pilots, and a central female friendship that’s actually an epic love story.

"Queenie, herself again, took hold of Maddie’s hand and squeezed it tightly. She walked all the way back across the airfield without letting it go. Maddie closed her eyes and flew again in the ethereal, pale green light. She knew she would never let it go."

HISTORICAL FICTION
#1: Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
This is SUCH A GOOD BOOK. I just finished reading it. It's about a British spy who gets captured by Nazis. It’s told by the spy telling a story to her captors. It has so many plot twists. It’s also in a series if you want to continue with the characters; I’m reading them in this order:
#2: Rose Under Fire by Elizabeth Wein
#3: The Enigma Game by Elizabeth Wein
#4: The Pearl Thief by Elizabeth Wein
#5: Lovely War by Julie Berry
I love this book. It’s told by the Greek goddess Aphrodite, about two love stories, each taking place in WW1 and WW2. It’s a beautiful story.
#6: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
This book is a classic. A German girl becomes friends with a Jewish man, and also as the title suggests, she steals books. Also recommend watching the movie after!
WRITTEN IN THE ERA
#7: 1984 by George Orwell (1949)
I haven’t read this one yet, but from what I hear it sounds really good. From what I know, it’s about a closely monitored dystopian society.
#8: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier (1938)
This one is on my book list. I’ve seen both the 1940 and 2020 movies. It’s about a woman who marries a guy, and everybody is still obsessed with the guy's last wife (Rebecca). It’s crazy. SUCH A BIG PLOT TWIST AT THE END.

Currently reading Great Circle and it's bringing back Code Name Verity feelings. I read that book EIGHT years ago, it shouldn't be able to still mentally destroy me every time female pilots in WWI are mentioned 😭
