Codex Week Day 2: Shelter From The Storm

The durasteel bars across the windows survived the Separatist’s assault and even the 212th and 501st’s counter-assaTult to reclaim the building, but the glass hadn’t been as lucky. After they’d put metal sheets over them, but the fit isn’t perfect and the wind is icy cold where it whips through the gaps. Cody walks quickly, hands curled into fists to protect his fingers, fighting down a shiver. His dress greys are damp from the humidity and a days worth of sweat and struggle to keep the wind out as successful as they had when dry that morning.

The building was a barracks long before they arrived, even if there’s little of the local army left to live in it. The 212th have gratefully taken over the unused space, revelling in the luxury of having a dedicated building without having to build it themselves. The corridor Cody has been housed at the end of is lined with dim orange lights, each struggling to make do with the meager share of the power they’ve been allowed.

Cody stops outside his door, rubbing at his face, pulling himself straight until he feels the stretch up his legs and over his shoulders. Whatever illusion of alertness it gives him fades the moment he relaxes again, weariness seeping back into his limbs and settling like a heavy fog over his mind. He knocks, even though it’s his room, and lets himself in. 

Rex looks up from Cody’s desk, the furrow of his brow smoothing out as the hard line of his frown softens. Cody’s own mouth smiles back before he fully considers the action. Rex looks away again, back to the datapad on the desk in front of him. Cody rubs at his face again. The room is tidier than when he left that morning, Rex having cleared some space on his desk, abandoned mugs gathered in one place if not removed entirely. Half of Cody’s kit is still scattered across his bed, but the stuff on the floor has been moved.

It is hard for Cody to describe what he and Rex are to each other.

They are more than friends. It may have started that way, but that is far too casual a term for the depth of their relationship now.

They are more than brothers. After all, nearly everyone who Cody interacts with is; brothers-in-arms or brothers-in-blood, the lines are blurred when the whole GAR shares the same.

They are more than superior and subordinate. They remain professional while on duty of course, respecting the chain of command protects their men under them, but in private Rex is one of the few with whom he can let down those walls.

They are more than lovers. They have shared physical intimacy in the past, and will again, but that is almost incidental next to all else they have shared: thoughts and emotions, fears and dreams, whispered plans for After.

They are…partners, perhaps. Equal, supportive, a pair. ‘One when together and one when apart’, for all that the latter is unfortunately the more common state of affairs.

In the end, Cody doesn’t really care what people call it. He just knows that he is Rex’s and Rex is his. In every way they can be.

Oh yes definitely! I don't have much atm beyond dot points but I'll put some good ones below. This is the one I'm leaning towards the most for Codex week so I really hope the brain cell lets me finish it.

Rex needs a certain edge to his play and Cody knows exactly how to give it to him

“lighten up, bees,” I said to myself. “ease up on the existential throttle. have some fun!” lo and behold: yet more sad human rights-adjacent woe: charity gala edition, courtesy of a snippet for @codex-week:

Rex blinks. Cody looks—relaxed. He doesn’t think he’s ever seen it, even flushed and leaning against the bar at 79’s; lying on his stomach on the floor, playing sabacc with the other officers as they wait for orders; talking shit on the sparring mats. Even the odd glimpse Rex has caught of Cody’s, erm, personal life—it’s all sharp teeth and predatory anticipation; he knows because it’s made him swallow hard and wish he were strong enough to look away.

It’s not entirely gone, but now: this, too. The dress grays are enough of a novelty that they don’t register to Rex as a uniform, blending in as clothes with the gowns and robes and headdresses of the other guests. He hadn’t really recognized himself in them when he’d fidgeted in front of the mirror at the barracks, and then he’d been too busy flipping Fives off for his hooting and heckling to think about it. But now, the easy angle of Cody’s hips, the breadth of his shoulders as he leans in, attentive, to the woman next to him.

For the first time, Rex sees a man. Cody has always been a soldier, his C/O, something outside and beyond the world as he knows it for himself. But now he sees Cody has a shape outside of the armor—still powerful, still lethally graceful—but flesh as a blessing, not a blight; a garden to cultivate for pleasure, not merely a field to ruin through harvest. This man, crystal glass in hand, earnestly answering a senator’s question: he could be real someday. He looks like he belongs.

And it shouldn’t surprise him, and it mostly doesn’t, on Cody’s behalf. Rex just hadn’t realized until now: he’d also thought of himself as a clone first, and a man second.
