Happy Celiacaversary to me!! 9 years ago today I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. 💚 I can’t believe it’s been that long! About 3 million Americans have celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that’s triggered when they eat gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and other grains. It is the protein that makes dough elastic and gives bread its chewy texture. But when someone with celiac disease eats something with gluten, their body overreacts to the protein and damages their villi, which are very small finger-like projections found along the wall of the small intestine. When the villi are injured, the small intestine can’t properly absorb nutrients from food. Eventually, this can lead to malnourishment, as well as loss of bone density, miscarriages, infertility -- even to the start of neurological diseases, or certain cancers. The only “treatment” for people with this disease is to avoid gluten in their diets. #celiac #celiacdisease #glutenfree #coeliac #coeliacdiseaseawareness #celiacdiseaseawareness #smallintestine #gastrointestinal #gastrointestinalproblems #glutenfreecauseihavetobe #coeliacdisease #celiaclife #glutenfree #glutenfreegoodlife #glutenfreelifestyle #glutenfreefoodie (at West New York, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmK-HKbr01L/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Separate toasters, separate chopping and cutting boards. One area of the kitchen is gluten free only. All gluten food stored away from the gluten free. We label certain containers and wipe down surfaces more than a normal household probably does. And toast pockets… because these, my friends are genius. She can use the toastie machine safely and if she goes somewhere say for travel or uses someone else’s kitchen (at sixth form college they are allowed use of a kitchen for meals) she can at least be safer. Just some of the things we do as we navigate #glutenfreelife #coeliacdisease #coeliacfriendly #glutenfree #inourkitchen #inmykitchen #freefrom #wemakeitwork (at Richmond, Surrey, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClI6szsr6-N/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

No Glu-10. If you're celiac or gluten intolerant, and love beer, there are some very good gluten-free beers out there! Conventional beer is not gluten-free, however, there are alternatives made from non-wheat and non-barley ingredients that are safe for celiacs. As far as beer goes, there is always a solution! Cheers! 🍻 #mrbeerteedesigns #beer #beerstagram #instabeer #celiac #coeliacdisease #glutenfree #glutenfreebeer #celiacathlete #beerlover #beerloverathlete #beerandsports #football #footballer #footballgear #footballshirt #beerglass #homebrew #brewer #glutenfreebrewery #beernerd #drinkcraft #beersnob #beerporn https://www.instagram.com/p/CWOOU8aqmMy/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Today is National Gluten Free Day!! I have Celiac Disease and that means I must live #glutenfree (no wheat, barley or rye) or I will become very, very sick if I ingest even the tiniest bit of it. 20ppm (parts per million) or less is what FDA says is the limit. The good news is that there are so many #gf options. After 9 years plus of being #celiac, I've become quite the pro at figuring out what I can eat. #glutenfreecauseihavetobe #celiacdisease #coeliac #coeliacdisease #glutenfriendly #glutenfreelife #glutenfreelifestyle #glutenfreeisforme #whatkellyeats #gfree #glutenfreefoodie #glutenfreefoodiesofinstagram (at West New York, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnXOlVHJ2-_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Coeliac Sucks
Yep that’s right. Being a coeliac or celiac sucks.
It sucks big time.
And it even sucks more if you’ve lived most of your life undiagnosed (like me) and now you have to change your lifestyle & food preferences for tasteless, plain food that tastes that cardboard.
I used to live the most care free eating existence. I would have whatever I felt like whenever I wanted, I’d dine out at any restaurant without a care in the world and any takeaway chain was on the menu. I didn’t have to worry about hidden ingredients, if I was going to spend the rest of the night with a tummy so bloated I looked 8 months pregnant or spend a good 30 minutes on the toilet with runny poo.
I loved my pre coeliac days, life was really good then.
But now my eating life resolves around checking food lists, finding gluten free alternatives and making sure that I always have gluten free flour in my cupboard. I now have to budget for an extra $50 a week because gluten free food is so overpriced I need a pay rise to survive. Actually that’s a good idea, why can’t us coeliacs get a supplement from the government to help us pay for our food?! I mean why should we be punished and have to pay more, we’re already on a life sentence of boring food alternatives.
As you can see, I’m not a very happy coeliac. I want to be able to eat whatever I want and not have to worry if I am going to hurl it up afterwards or have my stomach inflate like a balloon. I spent 40 years eating whatever I wanted and I am not adjusting to this new phase of my life.
I have however, been given my marching orders from my gastroenterologist (facing word for dr who looks down your throat & up your bum). The orders were go compleltely gluten free now or risk life threatening illnesses in the future. I have two young children so the threat of possibly not being around to meet my gran babies scared me a little, as you can imagine.
So here I am at 41, going completely gluten free and hating life. Ok I may be a little dramatic. But I hate living knowing that a little sense of my freedom has been taken away. The freedom to choose & eat whatever my taste buds decide on.
It’s going to be a tough road but I’m on it now and I refuse to give in to my cravings, however delicious and gluteness they may be.
Coealic sucks but who knows, maybe along the way I’ll start to enjoy things.
Fingers and toes crossed

And oooh, nice Disney just took a crack at people who are gluten free, contributing the the dangerous atmosphere of pretending gluten free is a diet or a fad, not a serious allergy or intolerance which can kill people or cause them permanent internal damage?
(I used to work in a restaurant that was entirely gluten free to coeliac could eat there safely.)
