Open<3

Six days into December and the winter chill had well and truly taken root. He was sat inside The Southern Bean Coffee Shop, his hands tightly clutched onto a takeaway cup filled with hot chocolate. Knowing the ceramics of their dining mugs would steal some of the much needed heat away from his needy talons, he’d opted for the disposable cardboard hybrids, which were now burning his fingers to the point that the places with the most contact had began to go a little red. He’d been daydreaming for some time and hadn’t officially taken a single sip of his drink; sat on a stool leaning against a small table that faced the window. Every now and then he would stir, look at his watch and then drift off again. Every time he checked, it was never as far along as he was hoping.

He’d drifted off into memories for a while longer and returned to find someone had sat beside him. He looked at them, wondering why they’d chosen so close when there were plenty of other seats. His mind began to freestyle, wondering if they had malicious intent or knew something he didn’t. “What do you want?” he finally blurted out, accusingly, before instantly regretting it and quickly prying his hands away from their heat source to fish out his mobile phone to try and bury his face into it to hide.

RFA+V, Saeren & Vanderwood x MC who is friends with her ex

Jumin

Okay, so in my headcanon, once MC starts dating Jumin...bean is going to want to know her entire life story.

And he will give his entire life story.

But this will also include past relationships.

Jumin is not so naive that he would assume MC never had any past relationships.

After the events of his route, he learned to not be so possessive and controlling over MC.

...But Jumin will totally want to meet his ex.

MC will have to assure him that the break up was mutal thing and no one was hurt.

MC’s ex is the one who is the most stressed. Jumin is a bit intimidating.

But after getting to know the ex and having Seven do a background check Jumin realizes how good of friends MC and her ex are.

Any friend of MC is a friend of Jumin.

Her ex is still a little scared of Jumin...

Yoosung

Can you say insecure?

Anxiety levels through the roof.

He should go meet MC’s ex and show how he’s her man!

...But what if he’s big and strong and is a totally better boyfriend then he is???

MC PLEASE DON’T LEAVE MEEEEEEE

But MC convinces Yoosung to meet her ex.

They meet at a mall and it is pretty awkward at first.

What really makes Yoosung relax a little is seeing MC and her ex interact. There isn’t that unrequited love feel. They seem more like siblings than anything else

Then the ex mentions LOLOL. They end up talking about that for most of the time.

After the hangout, Yoosung finally asks why they broke up.

MC explains that they made better friends than partners.

Yoosung could accept that~

Zen

So I have been playing around with this idea of my OC being a dancer and ends up being in a production with Zen. I may end up writing this but if not then here it is!

So the production is the “Romeo and Juliet but with Dancing” type of story. Y’know the ones where Juliet is a classically trained dancer where Romeo is more freestyle. This mirrors reality because MC has been trained as a dancer where Zen is self-taught.

MC is Juliet, Zen is Romeo but MC’s ex is the third point in the love triangle. He and MC grew up together, training in the same dance studio. They dated throughout high school but broke up when they graduated because they wanted to focus on their own careers.

Zen discovers this as MC squeals when she sees her ex and runs up to hug him.

Wow, Zen your eyes have gone from red to green!

This makes for a very...interesting rehearsal

Zen is trying to show off his own skills but...he is not the technical dancer that MC’s ex is...

....And they have been dancing for years. Zen knows there is something special about performing, especially with your loved ones.

When they have their break, MC takes Zen to the side and talks him through it.

When the performance is done, everyone talks about how real Zen’s emotions felt on stage...

Jaehee

Probably the most likely out of the RFA to actually have had a past relationship let’s be real

A little insecure about MC and him still being friends.

However, Jaehee and MC’s ex really hit it off.

She’s hadn’t really maintained a lot of longlasting relationships because she has been so busy with school and then working...and more working.

While she is still busy with the baker, she has made it a priority to allow herself free time to spend with MC.

This now expanded to MC’s ex.

She actually really enjoys having a friend outside of the RFA.

While MC is, of course, wonderful and she could not imagine her life without MC, everyone needs friends!

Someone to just have coffee with every once in a while.

Jaehee starts expanding her social pool by finding people interesting in other things she likes, like judo or musical theater.

Listen I just want Jaehee to have more friends, dangit!

Saeyoung

Already knew about the ex.

Seven will tease them about it nonstop when he and MC first meet up with her ex.

Luckily, her ex has a good sense of humor and teases Seven about it back.

It is kind of the normalcy that Saeyoung needs tbh.

Like MC’s ex does not believe the crazy stuff that has happened in the RFA. He’s just like “Saeyoung, you’re a secret agent? Well I’m the queen of England!”

To be fair, some of the stuff that happens in this series is...hard to believe.

He is just such a normal guy that it is kind of nice to be able to chill with him.

Making up for the brotherly relationship he was robbed of--whoops

“That is totally cool, MC”

Narrator: It was, in fact, not totally cool

While he would try to hide it as much as he could, V is a little possessive

His first instinct is just to internalize his jealously and pretend everything is fine.

MC picks up on that real quick.

Finally gets him to express his discomfort.

Explains that they dated in high school and once they went to college, they just grew apart. They are still friends but they do not have any romantic feelings for each other.

Still may not want to be friends with the ex

But calms down a little, especially after MC smoothers him in love and kisses

Saeran

Never crosses his mind that MC would have a relationship before meeting him.

“MC, fairy tale princesses don’t have ex-boyfriends! T_T”

It didn’t come up in MC’s research. It was a very lowkey relationship that did not go anywhere.

However, Saeran has never been in a relationship before and the fact that MC called someone at some point “boyfriend” makes him very insecure.

It requires a lot of explaining about how it was barely a romantic relationship but they still kept in touch.

Saeran doesn’t to hold MC back from having a social life outside of him. However, there is still that linger fear that he isn’t good enough for her.

So it takes some getting used it.

MC eases Saeran in but introducing him to her purely platonic friends and then working her way up to her ex.

I don’t think Saeran will ever be comfortable enough to be friends with MC’s ex but he will respect and trust MC.

Vanderwood

“I don’t approve of this, MC.”

MC: *blink* *blink* “excuse me?”

They have kind of an argument about this.

“What if he’s a spy for the agency?”

“He’s not a spy for the agency.”

“YOU DON’T KNOW THAT.”

“VANDERWOOD!!!”

He’s honestly kind of a brat about it.

“But Vandy he’s my best friend.”

*Vanderwood smirk* “I thought I was your best friend.”

This guy I swear.

Has to be dragged in order to meet him.

It was an unusually quiet afternoon. When Mingi – your loving, towering teddy bear of a boyfriend – had come over mid-morning with stale coffee and fresh donuts, you’d expected some sort of adventure. However, he simply handed you your cup of coffee, dropped the donuts off in the kitchen, and collapsed on your couch. So, there you were, curled up in your arm chair, still wearing last night’s pajamas – one of Mingi’s old t-shirts and sweatpants – as soft music played from the television speakers. Mingi was still sat on your couch, feet now propped up on the coffee table, his nose buried in a book you’d let him borrow.

There weren’t many days that you two had like this: quiet, simple days. With Mingi’s busy life as an idol, and your relationship needing to be kept secret, it seemed all your time was spent hiding in dark corners or running around avoiding anyone who looked remotely like they had a camera on them. You smiled softly to yourself, watching fondly as he pushed his glasses back up his nose. Pretty, you thought. That was one of your favorite words to describe Mingi: pretty. Though he often grumbled when you voiced your opinion out loud – his face turning pink, his eyes dropping from yours – there was just something about the word that felt right. Yes, he was cute; yes, he was sexy; yes, he was even beautiful; more than that, though, he was just… pretty.

He blinked in surprise, reeling backwards, face scrunching cutely at something he read. You giggled at his reaction. Wide-eyed, he looked up from the pages, almost as if he’d forgotten where he was and who he was with. “What?” he managed after a quiet moment. You shook your head, biting your tongue at calling him pretty.

“What? Seriously, jagiya,” he whined, pouting cutely. “What is it?”

“You’re just… pretty,” you finally said, smile breaking across your lips.

Mingi groaned, hiding his quickly reddening face in his book. You laughed at him, knowing that he secretly loved the word. Despite his protests, he loved being called pretty – it was evident in his sparkling eyes and the small, twitch of a smile on his lips. Simply, his pride wouldn’t let him admit it.

After a moment of watching him squirm, you turned back to your own book. Your giggling and his embarrassment slowly died as time dragged on, pulling the sun across the sky until the only light outside were the dim streetlights.

You’d long since put away your book, somehow convincing Mingi to do so as well – though admittedly much later. He’d grumbled and complained, though you’d insisted that if he was going to spend the night, the two of you were having a movie night. Complete with cuddling and pizza. You’d taken it upon yourself to notify Hongjoong of Mingi’s stay at your place (as the leader, he was the one who held ATEEZ’s only cellphone), promising him with a groan to “keep it PG.”

After hanging up on your conversation with Hongjoong, giggling to yourself at the thought that he was now loudly declaring to the others of Mingi’s absence, you went back to clearing the middle of the living room. Pushing the coffee table out of the way, you created a space large enough for the two of you to lounge. Some generic pop song was blaring now through your phone speakers. You bopped along to the beat, tossing blankets and pillows in the center of that space and making a makeshift nest. Through the music, you heard Mingi’s voice – low and soothing – drifting in from the kitchen.

“Yeah, two extra-large pizzas. One cheese, one supreme… Uh, hold on one second—Jagiya!” he shouted in your direction, head popping out from the wall of the kitchen. “You want a drink?!”

A warm feeling gripped your chest at the goofy look on his face. “I’m good, thanks!” He nodded, disappearing once more.

“No, no drinks—”

The song on your phone changed, the tune almost instantly recognizable. The voices of your boyfriend’s members came into the room, the sound bringing a bright grin to your face. You danced to the sound of your boyfriend’s group, giggling at your freestyle choreography. The other boys, who’d become good friends of yours since you’d begun dating Mingi, would have been incredibly disappointed at how you butchered what little of the choreography you knew. That thought turned your giggling into full-on laughter – the image of the disappointed looks on Yunho and San’s faces playing across your mind; you could almost hear Hongjoong, Yeosang and Seonghwa’s exasperated sighs; Wooyoung and Jongho, while less judgmental than the others, you knew would still find your actions the slightest bit tiring. It was no use denying it, you simply were not a great dancer.

When the song came to its end, your sides were aching. Before the next song could get to far, you calmed yourself down enough to turn it off. “Well,” The sudden sound of your boyfriend’s voice made you squeak. “That was something.” Mingi laughed at as you jumped, whirling round to face him. He was leaning casually against the back of the couch, smug grin on his face.

“How long were you standing there?!”

“Long enough to know that choreo I taught you didn’t stick.”

You blushed. “Well, you know I don’t dance.”

He didn’t respond, his expression softening, eyes glowing with warmth. His lips curled silently around a word with such fondness that your heart fluttered in your rib cage. You narrowed your eyes at him, cheeks growing pink as you asked him to repeat himself. “I didn’t say anything,” he refuted. Whining, you threw a pillow in his direction. He caught it with no problem, laughing at your cuteness. “Alright, stop with the projectiles.” He tossed the pillow back to you, fondly watching as you knelt to rearrange the nest from which you took it.

“I said you were pretty.”

Your face flushed at the word, the warm blanket of the compliment settling over you. You’d never been good at taking them; they made you squirm, much like they did Mingi. “What,” you laughed, attempting to brush off his kind words with humor, “when I was dancing like a fool or—”

“Yes,” he quickly stopped you, “when you were messing up the choreography that I’ve taught you a hundred times. When you were reading your book earlier today. When you tried to be discreet about throwing away the coffee that I brought because you didn’t want to hurt my feelings, but it was cold and undrinkable. When you told me to go order the pizza in that bossy tone of yours. When you’re fussing over blankets and pillows, making a place for us to sit. When you’re simply sitting there.” The sincerity in his voice made your face grow even hotter. You dropped your eyes from his, looking instead at a stain on the edge of the couch. “I always think you’re pretty,” he finished quietly.

A smile twitched at your lips, your fingers running nervously through the carpet. “I always think you’re pretty, too.”

You heard him laugh before he said, in a sweet, whispered tone, “I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

The doorbell rang and your soft moment was broken as you bounded to your feet and raced for the door, shouting, “pizza!” Mingi’s laughter followed you as you paid the delivery boy, stealing the boxes from his arms. When you shut the door, your boyfriend was stood behind you, ready you help you carry them to the kitchen. The two of you served yourselves wonderfully large slices of greasy pizza before cozying up in the nest you’d made in the living room.

Mingi’s eyes glimmered like stars in the low lighting of the room as he turned on the television. You thought to yourself once more, as you munched on a thick bite of cheese pizza, how pretty your boyfriend was. When he turned back to you and your eyes locked, a mile-wide, dopey smile spread across his pretty face.

“What do you want to watch, jagiya?” he asked.

“Whatever,” you replied, snuggling into his side.

“Whatever?”

“Uh-huh.”

“Zombieland!” he exclaimed, happily munching on his pizza. You groaned, elbowing him lightly in the side before conceding to watch the post-apocalyptic flic. Mingi laughed as the opening credits began to play. He wrapped an arm around you, pulling you firmly to his side.

In IR lore, what are the personalities of your personas? Basic likes and dislikes?

Kristen: Goggles is An Child and behaves as such. She's very cheerful, very curious, a bit mischievous and also 100% obsessed with making fanwork of her internet family... like a goddamn weirdo. She'll usually be hanging out with everyone, spot some sort of inspiration, squeak with joy and then rush off to write or draw. She's also the defacto leader of the Smol Squad, which is composed of herself, Shyner, Jojo and Chi-chi, and she's usually the one squeaking out ridiculous plans in muppet for dumb shit like stealing cookies and trying to trap people in fanfiction scenarios. She likes to help and can often be found doing such things as assisting Xander in his many schemes or just popping up to provide shit like charts or hold things for other people- basically whenever it would be funny to have some goddamn muppet backing something up.

She loves plush toys, particularly Crockernanner, and also loves sugar, star decorations, and cuddles. She likes being picked up and loves attention, and she's pretty consistently attached to at least one person, often her big brother Split if she's not with the Smol Squad. She is in eternal war with Phill since he bullies her constantly, and will occasionally try to set up elaborate traps for revenge only to fail miserably. Also she's a huge weeb. She does not like to sleep and will often go days without it before being dragged off by some bigger person to take a goddamn nap you ridiculous child. She is also very afraid of thunderstorms, she doesn't like loud noises or the dark.

She also has... various flaws and problems. But those are spoilers and I have no idea when/if we’ll be doing story stuff with IRsonas so I don’t want to give too much away with that.

Sorry this is very long, I think about my child a lot.

Jojo: JoJo is also a very happy child... like, stupid happy all the time. Like, they don't really have a concept of being angry. they're either manic happy or a bit sad. They love to find any way to make anybody smile or laugh, whether it be a somber happy, or a crying fit of laughter. They thrive off of happiness. They're a bit mischievous as well, and will try to play pranks and swipe things to chew on. They'll just appear in random places you'd never expect. like, in the pantry, the vent, or in your drawer. They chew things all the time to keep their dragon teeth sharp! They do tend to come off as obnoxious and kind of useless sometimes? But that's ok.

They love happiness, rocks, swimming, sandwiches, Vanilla coke, coffee, pianos, stars, ghost stuff(horror genre), and laughter. JoJo is pretty similar to Goggles now that I think about it x_xJoJo is best friends with Phill, and will always be on him in some way. Like his leg, back, holding onto his scarf by their teeth, etc. They're also very close with Goggles and Shyner, and Scott (even though Shyner tries to chase JoJo off with knives, JoJo will take it as a game of tag or something)JoJo doesn't like being yelled at or being told to go away. They get spooked easily by loud noises. They always get paranoid when they think someone is mad at them and will go to ungodly lengths to make them not mad or slightly annoyed with them, which sometimes makes people more annoyed with them than they were before.

JoJo is just an exaggerated version of me XD

Atwas: Atwas is fairly easy going. They make light of things often, and often hide serious sentiments behind jokes. They’re the type to roll with goofy and silly situations, and are very “yes and” type that enjoys escalating things in the name of light-hearted fun. They enjoy playing pranks, especially ones that take advantage of their hologrammatic nature (being able to enter and ‘possess’ electronics is something that they take advantage of often). Being technically in the cloud and a part of the internet at all times, they will often chime in with fun (often unrelated or humorous) metrics about situations and people as they occur—and often forgets that having a HUD isn’t something everyone has access to.

Being ‘technically’ invulnerable, atwas isn’t phased by the more dangerous things that go on in the IR tower, but usually prefers being a spectator or commentator as opposed to being an active participant in general shenaniganry. They don’t have any particular animosity towards anyone, and will occasionally help manage technical parts and functions of the tower.

They enjoy things like tech, cold weather, tea, fun statistics, darkness; and aesthetics like Film Noir and Retrowave.

They dislike things like excessively hot weather, being interrupted, getting too personal, having to put in a lot of “effort”, and being out of the loop.

Shyner: Shyner can easily be summed up to a tsundere in denial, and is the definition of an agent of chaos. If something goes wrong, she’s the one pouring a trail of kerosene to let the fire spread. She's loud, impulsive, and really doesn't give two shits. While quirky and charismatic, she’s also sarcastic and witty, reveling in the amusement of making fun of others. She’s often stubborn and impatient, thinking highly of her own beliefs and angered by those who dare to challenge her ideals. She also lacks a filter, and enjoys garnishing her words with colorful profanities. Filled with gripes of past trauma, she’s engaged in a constant internal war of turmoil and grief. She’s incredibly cautious and closed off around those she doesn’t trust, and can be very selfish. Despite this, she’s loyal to the few people she cares about, going out of her way to put them first if a dire situation were to arise. She’s also very sneaky and mischievous, often finding amusement in spying on others. Her MBTI is INTP-T.

Her hobbies include stargazing, ghost hunting, spying, and Satanic worship. She enjoys melancholy vibes, horror movies, animals, thunderstorms, and has an unhealthy obsession with sweets. Yes, this child will stab you without hesitancy if you take her cookies. She dislikes seafood, big crowds, kiddie leashes, and is afraid of experiencing intense emotion she doesn’t understand.I love my satanic smol bean very much. If I may be so bold as to dive into the nitty-gritty psychology, Shyner possesses many flaws, a lot of which I personally struggled with growing up. She is a reflection of my past self, some gripes with my current self, and the perception of how I could have turned out if I hadn’t met my family at IR. Hiding behind the exterior of being a merciless bully, she still has an intense internal desire to be a good person, but gets frustrated and often derails herself in the process of fighting her desire to act on impulse. She keeps most relationships with people at arm's length, fearing that if someone were to think highly of her, it would only be a matter of time before they’re disappointed. If we were to go full-fledged story mode, she would most definitely have an intense character redemption arc, making the revelation that being shitty to those who care about her isn’t the way to run from her problems and hide away from her own sense of self-insecurity/hatred.

Phill: Phill likes mischief, bad jokes, sexual undertones, Jojo, sexual overtones, bullying Kristen, and the colour pink. That's it xD

Jojo: :D yay

Alex: Alex don't give a shit but is for whatever reason the bossman and is also as powerful as silver age Superman, just don't try actual murder of the crew and he won't yeet you into the sun

Moon: 2019 Moon is an idiot. If we didn't know any better, we would assume he was born from nothing but an old head of lettuce in Satan's refrigerator. Think like Scott from Monster Prom, but different. He knows his right from his left, but the compass is still just "NESW" to him. Impulsive, lovable, and kinda loud, this muscley dumbass will do practically anything you tell him to if he finds it enjoyable. When paired with a few people, he works well as a second to many dynamic duos. Brodingles and Moon/Split and Moon are two really good ones, dangerous shenanigans ensue. Can and will rap like a beast, any challenge to a freestyle will result in a career ending and a death being sentenced. Extroverted people pleaser, definitely shooting high to perform and when adapting to a character, goes a little too hard. This man played Gander in Charlottes Web and didn't stop making goose sounds for months. Did I mention he's also a disney princess? Singing, animals, mortal enemy falling to their death? Everything

Dawn: ToonWolf/Dawn's personality falls within the confines of recklessly adventurous who doesn't think things through entirely. They like to try and rope others into going on various hikes, treasure hunts, mythic/cryptid searches, etc. Unapologetic sailor mouth. They will fight for friends and family. Various animals, trinkets, treasures, and cool but useless garbage are brought back to the tower often (oops theres a liiiiiiitle bit of hoarding). Sometimes those animals consist of dogs, cats, lizards, bears, wolves, The Great Noble One, horses, lions, elk, you get the idea (Can I keep them?Pleeeeeeeaaaaaaaaseeeeee??????????).

Overall they are most comfortable and relaxed in/around water and likes a whole lotta things including sailing, swimming, adventure, stargazing, animals, mythology/legends, friends, family, and drawing.

They dislike waking up early, limitations, being talked down to, boredom, desert/hot/humid/dry weather, coffee, and the movie "Cube"

Tex: Tex is an avid cryptid detective + has a surprisingly good intuition when creating conspiracy theories about them to follow. Mm lots of memes and disguises. Smart, but usually just off on their own thinking about other stuff.Totally has a wall in their room dedicated to figuring all the cryptids out with like, red string and everything.

My Favorite Music Projects of 2018

Black Panther The Album - Various Artists: Loved this album for the variety of the music yet cohesiveness at the same time. Favorite tracks are “The Ways”, “Bloody Waters”, “Paramedic!”, “King’s Dead”, “Big Shot” and “Seasons”

Swimming - Mac Miller: The funny thing about this album is that I had skipped his album before this but what compelled me to listen to it was was his Self Care track. I heard it and immediately said I was buying the album the Friday it came out and it is probably the album I felt got me the most since Kid Cudi’s Man On The Moon albums. Favorite tracks are “Come Back To Earth”, “Self Care”, “What’s The Use”, “Perfecto”, and “2009″.

Die Lit - playboi carti: perfect “mumble” rap ignant shit. great foil to the Black Panther Soundtrack. Favorite tracks are “Long Time”, “Right Now”, “Shoota”, “Fell In Luv”, “Mileage”, “FlatBed Freestyle”.

Championships - Meek Mill: I was skeptical with all the features on the album but I gotta say this my favorite Meek Mill album. Favorite tracks include: “What’s Free”, “Trauma”, “Oodles ‘n Noodles Babies”, “Respect The Game”, “Uptown Vibes”, “Stuck In My Ways”

ASTROWORLD - Travis Scott: Just a fun album and I could feel the new shit he was into but also felt the influences of his previous projects without it feeling recycled. He grew but stayed the same on this one if that makes any sense. Favorite tracks are “Stargazing”, “Stop Trying To Be God”, “Houstonfornication”, and “Coffee Bean”.

Daytona - Pusha T: 7 tracks but they were all dope. That’s all I have to say. Favorite tracks are “If You Know You Know”, “Hard Piano”, “Santeria”, and “Infrared”.

Whack World - Tierra Whack: 15 songs, 15 minutes, all unique. This shit was refreshing and it made me want for more. Favorite tracks include “4 Wings”, “Fruit Salad”, and “Flea Market”

A Love Letter To You 3 - Trippie Redd: Didn’t listen to the project he put out before this but I gave this a shot after the fact and it’s definitely very solid. Favorite tracks include: “Topanga”, “Negative Energy”, “A.L.L.T.Y. 3″, “I Tried Loving”, 1400/999 Freestyle”

BALLADS 1 - Joji: I felt this one. The failure in relationships. heartbreak. heartache. Beautiful music. Favorite tracks include “Test Drive”, “Slow Dancing In The Dark”, “Yeah Right”, and “Can’t Get Over You”.

i am > i was – 21 Savage: A surprise near the end of the year and a welcome one. Love this album. Thought the year was over for dope shit but nah. Favorite tracks are: “a lot”, “out for the night”, “can’t leave without it”, “asmr”, “ball w/o you”, “monster”, “letter 2 my momma”

Head In The Clouds - 88rising: Great compilation of songs. Rich Brian, Joji, and NIKI were standouts on it and it had some great features. Favorite tracks include “Peach Jam”, “Midsummer Madness”, “History”, “Poolside Manor”, “Beam”, “Head In The Clouds”, “Japan 88″

Swervo - G Herbo & Southside: Herbo the most dope offbeat rapping nigga alive and Southside beats are all on point. Favorite tracks are “Swervo”, “FoReal”, “Pac n Dre”, “Huh”, and “Honestly”.

Isolation - Kali Uchis: Very solid album, dope ballads. A lot of shit to vibe to. Favorite tracks are “Miami”, “Flight 22″, and “Killer”.

Goodbye and Good Riddance - Juice WRLD: dope mixtape. Favorite tracks are “All Girls Are The Same”, “Lucid Dreams”, “Used To”, “Hurt Me”, and “I’ll Be Fine”.

Everything Is Love - Beyonce & Jay-Z: I’m not a big Beyonce fan but I really fuck with Jay-Z so I gave this a shot and it was way better than I expected. Favorite tracks are “Apeshit”, “Nice”, “Black Effect”, and “LoveHappy”.

Freddie - Freddie Gibbs: Solid, solid project and a smooth listen. Favorite tracks are “Weight”, “Death Row”, “2 Legit”, “Diamonds 2″

FM! - Vince Staples: Probably my favorite Vince Staples project . Very West Coast. Favorite tracks are: Feels Like Summer”, “FUN!”, “No Bleedin”

Reese Laflare - Reese Laflare: this is actually my first time hearing any of his music and I fucked with this album heavy. Favorite tracks are “Much Better” and “Big Mad”

Veteran - jpegmafia: another first time listen. I dug the experimentation on this album. Favorite track is “1539 N. Calvert”

Nasty - Rico Nasty: Another raw album. She beats you in the head with it. Favorite track is "Oreo"

Everything else I enjoyed:

California EP - Diplo: another dope EP, loved the Yachty/Santigold track “Worry No More” track and the Trippie Redd “Wish” track

Alien Boy - Oliver Tree: very interesting EP. Favorite tracks are “Alien Boy”, “All I Got”, and “All That”.

Amen - Rich Brian: soild first album. Favorite tracks are “Amen”, “Attention”, “Glow Like That”, and “Enemies”.

Supreme Blientele - Westside Gunn: gritty and hard as shit. Loved all the wrestling references. Smooth beats. Favorite tracks are “GODS Don’t Bleed”, “Brutus”, “Elizabeth”, “Brossface Brippler”, “Wrestlemania 20″.

Testing - A$AP Rocky: I was a little let down by this project. I did fuck with a couple tracks tho. Favorite tracks are “A$AP Forever(Remix)”, “Praise The Lord”, and “Buck Shots”.

Squidtastic - SahBabii: This project let me down a little like Rocky’s did. My favorite track of course is “Anime World”

Fire In The Clouds - Curren$y: just a dope album to drive slow or chill to. Favorite tracks are “Specialist”, “Spaceship”, “Pay Scale”, “Targa”, and “Never Stop”.

Free Lunch - Wale: One of multiple EPs he released this year but this one was my favorite. Favorite track is “Ungrateful & Thankful”

East Atlanta Love Letter - 6lack: first full project I’ve heard from him and really dug it

BORN AGAIN - Keith Ape: loved the beats on this project.

The Atlas Underground - Tom Morello: I listened to this cuz Killer Mike was on it and recommended it and it did not disappoint

On The Run - Young Thug: this EP was dope. I liked the “Sin” and “High” tracks on there.

Nuthin’ 2 Prove - Lil’ Yachty: This is actually the best he’s put out. Favorite track on this was “Yacht Club”.

FETTI - Curren$y, Freddie Gibbs, & The Alchemist: One of the most solid collabs this year. When most felt like a cashgrab, this felt like a cohesive album. Favorite track is “Saturday Night Special”

WHITE BRONCO - Action Bronson: What you’d expect from a Bronson album, dope lyrics and smooth beats. Favorite tracks are “Prince Charming”, White Bronco”, “Swerve on Em”, and “Brutal”

Oxnard - Anderson .Paak: Love this album. Favorite tracks include “Tints”, “6 Summers”, “Smile/Petty”, Mansa Musa”, “Brother’s Keeper”, “Trippy”

Some Rap Songs - Earl Sweatshirt: I liked the experimentation on this one like Jpeg’s. Didn’t like it as much as some hip-hop heads but I thought it was solid. Favorite track is “Playing Possum”

Loose- Jack Harlow: white dude got a lot of bars. only thing holding him back to me is at times he sounds too much like Drake. Favorite tracks are “Sundown”, “Nun Free”, “Slide For Me”, “Sylvia”, “Too Much”

DiCaprio 2 – JID: First time hearing this dude and I really liked this tape.

Mudboy - Sheck Wes: Interesting album. Favorite track: “Jiggy On The Shits”.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse – Various Artists: dope soundtrack. Favorite tracks include: “Invincible”, “Sunflower”, “Start A Riot”, “Hide”

Batfamily Hidden Talents (Headcanons)

Bruce:

Bruce’s best-hidden talent would be his knack for staying hidden. But y’all already knew that.

His second hidden talent is trick shots. After years of throwing batarangs and aiming grappling hooks, throwing ping pong balls into red cups is done naturally.

Probably realized that people actually make a living off of the hobby after Dick or Jason showed him Youtube videos on Dude Perfect's channel

Bruce just shrugged and said, "I can do that."

While he doesn't make Youtube videos or a living off of the talent, whenever he's feeling a little bit bored in the Batcave, he'll probably toss a crumpled piece of paper or two across the cave.

When everyone gives him the I'm-shook look, Bruce will most definitely shrug.

Dick

As the first Robin, Dick was under a lot of pressure to know all sorts of trivia on the American Robin.

”Tweet, Tweet, on the street.”

So he ends up just learning about all sorts of birds. Dick probably had an entire book full of facts and pictures about each bird.

Try’s to get one of his brothers to go bird watching with him.

Eventually coaxes Damian by convincing him he’ll take him to the zoo afterwards.

"Hey, that’s an Eastern Goldfinch! Did you know that they eat seeds from dandelions, sunflowers, and -”

“Tt. Shut up, Grayson.”

Once, when Jason got really mad at Tim, he just starting hardcore roasting him - rap style.

Tim was so confused, especially when Jason started yelling at him.

“You’re supposed to rap back! It’s a rap battle!”

Everyone is too scared to challenge Jason anyways.

Tim

Everyone knows Tim's addiction to coffee. It's no secret.

What everyone wants to know but too afraid to ask is how far Tim's love of coffee is willing to go,

The answer: Far. Very, very far.

Once Tim really needed to stay up to work on a case. This poor lil bean was already super sleep deprived.

Before he knew it, Tim had drunk 12 cups of coffee straight.

The only way the Batfamily figured it out was because the next morning when everyone woke up, Tim was throwing up in the Bathroom.

Alfred found a bunch of coffee pods littered all over Tim's study and immediately called 911.

Everyone mostly blamed the caffeine poisoning on Tim's lack of sleep instead of stupidity, as this guy is one of the smartest detectives alive.

To this day, Tim still hasn't lived it down. That and the chubby bunny challenge, which is another long story for another day.

Damian

Damian is a very introverted guy, and enjoyed doing things by himself.

He also has major anger management issues.

Drawing and painting help him cope with calming down and getting away from his crazy brothers.

Once Alfred notices Damian’s drawings, he started buying blank canvases and paint brushes for him.

When Damian is having a young day, or just really wants some alone time, he will usually paint a picture of Titus or Batcow.

Damian once even painted Bruce for his birthday. It hangs in Bruce’s office to this day.

Sometimes Damian will allow Bruce to sell his paintings, or put it up on display around the Manor or the Gotham Art Gallery. Otherwise, Damian keeps them in a special room in the Manor that only Alfred and him know about.

Happy December everyone! If you haven’t started your Holiday shopping yet, perhaps some of these ideas from my Holiday Gift Guide will inspire you. Also, my site is moving servers Monday so there is a chance it may be down but hoping it won’t. Just to play it safe, you may want to print out any recipes you plan on making Monday. If you’re new to my meal plans, I’ve been sharing these free, 7-day flexible healthy meal plans (you can see my previous meal plans here) that are meant as a guide, with plenty of wiggle room for you to add more food, coffee, beverages, fruits, snacks, dessert, wine, etc or swap recipes out for meals you prefer, you can search for recipes by course in the index. You should aim for around 1500 calories* per day.

THE DETAILS:

Breakfast and lunch Monday-Friday, are designed to serve 1 while dinners and all meals on Saturday and Sunday are designed to serve a family of 4. Some recipes make enough leftovers for two nights or lunch the next day. While we truly believe there is no one size fits all meal plan, we did our best to come up with something that appeals to a wide range of individuals. Everything is Weight Watchers friendly, I included the updated Weight Watcher Freestyle Points for your convenience, feel free to swap out any recipes you wish or just use this for inspiration!

The grocery list is comprehensive and includes everything you need to make all meals on the plan. I’ve even included brand recommendations of products I love and use often. Cross check your cabinets because many condiments you’ll notice I use often, so you may already have a lot of them.

And last, but certainly not least, this meal plan is flexible and realistic. There’s plenty of wiggle room for cocktails, healthy snacks, dessert and dinner out. And if necessary, you can move some things around to make it work with your schedule. Please let me know if you’re using these plans, this will help me decide if I should continue sharing them!

How Flow Profiling Impacts Espresso Extraction

While dose, yield, and brew time are the three main parameters that baristas should focus on when dialling in espresso, there are a number of other important variables. One of these is the rate at which water flows throughout extraction – known as the “flow rate”.

Changing the water flow rate is becoming more and more popular among baristas, as it provides them with a different kind of control. By altering the amount of water passing through the coffee puck at any given time, the barista can bring out some of the more nuanced and subtle flavours in the resulting espresso.

To further discuss flow rate and its effect on coffee profiles, I spoke with award-winning Mexican barista and owner of PalReal, Fabrizio Sención, as well as Lukasz Bertoli and Carlo Ciciliot, the co-founders of Emo Design Studio.

Flow Rate And Flow Profiling

The flow rate of an espresso machine is a measurement of how much water passes through the grouphead while the pump is active. Most commercial machines have a flow rate of between 250 and 500 grams per 30 seconds (g/30s), but the ideal range is between 200 and 280 g/30s.

It is advised that you calculate the flow rate of each grouphead a number of times in order to achieve accurate results. To do so, remove your portafilter, get some scales, and grab a receptacle for the water. Engage the pump for a set period of time. Once it’s finished, you divide the total weight of the water by that time to figure out your flow rate in grams per second (g/s). For example, 300 grams of water over 30 seconds means your grouphead has a flow rate of 10g/s.

Understanding your machine’s flow rate will help you to fine-tune how the water and coffee interact during extraction. Greater control over how the water passes through coffee will enable you to pinpoint specific levels of acidity, sweetness, bitterness, and body to create a unique espresso shot. This process is known as flow profiling, or flow control.

Mexican barista Fabrizio Sención co-founded several cafés in Guadalajara, and came seventh in the 2010 World Barista Championships. He explains why flow profiling is so important: “Flow control allows you to target totally new extractions and discover the full complexity of the cup. You can refine existing recipes and potentially find undiscovered ones.

“It benefits how we approach and extract espresso, and helps us to ensure that all the grounds are evenly saturated with water.”

The Relationship Between Flow and Pressure

The pressure your espresso machine produces will dictate your flow rate. To understand how pressure affects flow in your machine, you need to understand what causes resistance to pressure.

There are a number of things that limit pressure in an espresso machine. Alongside the diameter of the pipes themselves, you also have flow restrictors, which keep the pressure within the machine as constant as possible.

Beyond this, there is also the coffee puck’s resistance to water. The grounds themselves will affect how much water can pass through and at what speed. However, the puck’s resistance also varies throughout extraction. As pressure and flow rate increase, the coffee takes on more water and provides less resistance.

Generally, as the pressure increases, so does the flow rate. However, a sharp increase in pressure may compact the grounds, which will lead to a slower flow rate and affect extraction.

The pressure should generally be kept stable throughout to ensure that the flow rate does not fluctuate and affect the flavour of the espresso. The easiest way to achieve this is by using a machine with integrated pressure controls. The Dalla Corte ZERO, for example, comes equipped with a Digital Flow Regulation (DFR) system.

“With Digital Flow Regulation, you can control the amount of water coming out of the grouphead over the puck of coffee over a set period of time. This maintains constant and stable pressure,” Fabrizio explains.

How To Change Your Flow Rate

There are a number of different ways to control your flow rate. You can manually adjust the pressure by changing your machine’s flow restrictors, or by reducing the pump pressure.

However, manually tweaking a machine’s flow rate can be quite complicated, especially for new baristas. Using an espresso machine with dedicated controls makes flow profiling much easier.

Lukasz Bertoli and Carlo Ciciliot are the co-founders of Emo Design Studio, an industrial design consultancy based in Italy. They have developed a number of different products for the coffee industry, including the Dalla Corte ZERO.

They explain why it’s useful for baristas to have access to a dedicated flow control system: “On the ZERO, the flow rate can be changed from 2 to 10g/s through the dedicated touch screen, which is clearly visible on each single grouphead. Once the flow rate has been set, it remains constant throughout extraction.

“You can also use the control panel to change the machine’s general settings. This is useful for setting the coffee’s extraction time, the flow, the water temperature during extraction, the weight in the cup, and much more.”

How Does Flow Rate Affect Extraction?

Flow rate has a significant impact on every single phase of espresso extraction, including pre-infusion. Pre-infusion occurs when water first hits the coffee puck and it starts releasing CO2.

From the beginning of pre-infusion until the extraction chamber completely fills up with water, the pressure remains at zero bar. This doesn’t change depending on the pressure coming in from the machine or the water flow that has been set; pressure only increases once the chamber is saturated with water.

Fabrizio explains how controlling the flow rate allows baristas to achieve the desired flavour profiles during pre-infusion: “Pre-infusion for the first 12 to 15 seconds with a restricted flow rate allows coffee to extract more easily, even with light roasted beans or a very fine grind size.

“Controlling the flow rate means you can grind as fine as you want with medium to light roasts without sourness.”

Lukasz and Carlo explain that the ZERO is equipped with two different flow rate settings.

“The ZERO has two major flow control modes – fixed water flow and freestyle water flow. With the fixed water flow, the flow rate can be adjusted on the touchscreen, and fixed throughout extraction.” This helps a barista when they’re making the same beverage repeatedly, as they can fix the flow rate for a period of time.

Lukasz and Carlo add: “With the freestyle water flow setting, each lever on the ZERO has four separate steps. Each of these steps is set to a specific flow rate – 4, 6, 8, and 10g/s – giving the barista full control during extraction.” This can be useful at the end of the shot, as the flow rate of the coffee naturally starts to increase when the coffee puck is wet and its resistance is low. The ability to manually reduce the flow rate provides the barista with more control.

Both the fixed and freestyle modes on the ZERO provide the barista with greater control. Lukasz and Carlo say that these features “give the baristas the power to explore specialty coffee aromas”.

“The barista can use different coffees and set the best flow profile on every single grouphead, as well as changing flow profiles with the same coffee to obtain different results.”

Useful Tips When Using Flow Profiling

You can also use flow profiling to inform your dose or your grind for an espresso. If the dose is too small, or the grind too coarse, then there will not be enough pressure to create the desired flow rate, causing it to under-extract. Similarly, there will be too much pressure if the dose is too big or the grind is too fine, resulting in over-extracted espresso.

If you want to further adjust the flow rate, you can also change the size of your portafilter baskets. Some machines, such as the ZERO, come with a filter kit designed to help you reach an optimal flow rate.

You can also adjust your flow rate to suit different roast levels. To tone down acidity and sweetness in light roasts, pre-infusion should last between five and eight seconds at a flow rate of 2 or 3g/s. For medium roasts, a five-second pre-infusion at 5 or 6g/s will extract more oils and increase the body, and decreasing the flow rate towards the end of the brew time will reduce bitterness to create a pleasant aftertaste. Finally, you can even minimise the bitterness of dark roasts by lowering the flow rate from 10g/s to 4g/s after pre-infusion. This will bring out more sweetness in the coffee.

Ultimately, it is down to the barista to experiment and find the perfect flow rate for each individual coffee. Fabrizio explains that it’s important to allow the barista to experiment: “I like to give baristas the freedom to find complexity and balance of the shots. Behind the bar, I advise fixing your flow to suit the coffee you are using. If you want to push the boundaries of your coffee and play with it, then go with freestyle extraction.”

Next time you find yourself experimenting with espresso, consider using flow profiling. Not only can it improve the flavour and balance of your shots, it could also lead to you unlocking hidden or undiscovered flavours in your coffee. This allows you to create a whole new experience for the customer.
