The time is here, and oh man, do I have a lot to say! Ever since this post was posted on my personal tumblr, on the fifth of may, I have been working like a machine on all things OUROBOROS. I had originally planned for this to just be a progress report/ announcement on what I will be working on now that I am free of the shackles of work, but, somehow, I managed to finish all bullet points, and more. So, let's get into it!

First off, the title.  Ouroboros becomes all capitalized OUROBOROS. Idk. It's neat. Next!

Art. Whew. I didn't think I could draw like this anymore- drawing has been more of a struggle than writing has been, forever, always- it was something I really strived to become good at, for a time. And I gave up. Only to pick it up again when I started ouro, and ever since I released that pressure, something just clicked and I have been churning out art like never before. I don't know if this is a fluke, a stroke of luck or if all that hard work I once did slaving away with menial art practice… but I'm grateful nonetheless. (A note on official RO art: I lost my ipad pencil somewhere on the lawn, lmao. I haven't been able to get a new one yet, so there is a slight delay here.) I am hoping that I get to make some commissions too, in the near future. Visit the forum to see some works in progress (amongst them, Yor's RO portrait!)

Onto the hellscape that is coding! I have been growing more proficient with CSS and html with the help of the ones that run so that we can walk; I have studied and researched and tested and tinkered until my eyes crossed, finding my way into this medium with the incredible guidance of the giants of whose shoulders I stand on. I will talk about this in detail on a later date. So I think it's finally time to reveal that yes, I am working on a twine version of ouro. I will develop it in tandem with choicescript; the porting over from one to the other isn't the herculean task I thought it would be.

Why am I doing this? Because I need to have a save system. I am continuing to write the whole alpha draft in choicescript in hopes that CoG will announce the ability to have a native save/checkpoint system, but if that doesn’t happen, I can’t publish this story without one. Unfortunately, I am not willing to code in a savesystem in choicescript myself, because this will be a large game, with far too many variables for that to be sustainable. Trust me, no one is more disappointed by that fact than me. If it comes to the point that twine publishing will be what I do, I will set my sights on writing a smaller game for hosted games.

Onto writing:

The best news out of this whole bunch is that I have worked so hard on editing and writing, that in the past month I have all but finished a two chapter update! I have a chunk of about 5-6 thousand words left to write, and I am going to buckle down over the weekend to see it through. I wanted to have it done so badly for today, but I lost three days of writing time last week due to still being weighed down with work. I hope it isn’t too disappointing to have to wait until monday for the demo update! I am going to post a link to an as-I-write updated demo on Patreon and Discord, if you want to see the ugly face of raw wip drafts. Otherwise I will post the demo update here on Monday with a comprehensive post!

And now!  the biggest news is… from now on, I am writing full time!

This is what I have been tossing and turning about every night ever since Easter. It started as a silly idea while talking to some friends and family about how I was looking for a change in career. And then, little by little, that idea whittled down to a plan, carefully carved by my partner and his whispers of a happy future, a finished dream project, and something to be proud of until the day I wither and die. 

Somewhere between then and now, I grasped a tiny sliver of bravery and held on for dear life. 

I quit my job as a teacher, and instead of accepting a cushy office job, I started behaving as if OUROBOROS and writing was my work (for all the moments I could afford). I have researched and tried different methods from week to week, and although I was still tired from work, I felt like I was onto something that could build into a sustainable future. 

I have no doubts that this journey will be bumpy and long, but sometimes all it takes is to take that first step, and do it with determination. It might all crash and burn and fail in a spectacular way, or with a whimper, but then I will know that I have tried. I will know that I gave myself the chance to be who I want to be, work on what means so much to me. 

And that’s it. I think the hardest part of formulating this post (I’ve written about 50 versions of it!) is getting to the point; the kernel of what makes it so special to me. So, in my heart of hearts, what I'm trying to tell you is that I'm gonna give it my all- and while I know the road to having a sustainable career in writing is rough and ever winding, I do know for sure that I am ready for a challenge, to pour my heart and soul into it until the day I rush out of the office screaming IT IS DONE. IT IS DOOOOONE!!!

Daniel was sick of it, of feeling like a let down and a dark cloud in the relationship. Max was so damn successful at such a young age, and it wasn’t his fault Daniel was washed up and out of his seat at 33. It wasn’t Max’s fault Daniel’s dream was crumbling, yet Daniel felt like this all had to be a burden to him.

The “R” word had been thrown around alot, but he didn’t feel ready for it yet. A year out he could handle, but retirement? At 33? It felt crazy, and Daniel wasn’t ready for it.

But then the seats on the grid were filled by younger and younger drivers and it made Daniel re-evaluate. Racing had been his life for so bloody long he didn’t even know how to breathe without it. But that wasn’t his only want in life, no, he wanted a family too. Pups of his own to call him Momma and snuggle into his chest for comfort. And his aging body was screaming it was getting late for him to start.

And so Daniel wasn’t ready for retirement, no, but he was ready for a year of maternity leave.

He’d anticipated it for a while now, when few seats were left and none truly appealed to him, whilst the pull to start a family grew and grew. He’d put a plan into action, but he hadn’t told anyone just yet. Max had a title to win - even if it was much easier than last season - he didn’t need another distraction. So Daniel had kept silent until now, until he announced that it seemed he wouldn’t be racing in 2023 and Max had won his second.

Now seemed like a time for celebration.

So the Monday morning they woke in their Monaco apartment in late morning, the double header exhausting them and no one yet demanding their attention. Daniel could slowly wake up and take a deep breath, his Alpha’s cosy scent beside him, the soft fabric of their bedding of the nest soothing on his skin. Smile happily as Max exhaled and opened his eyes with a blink and a groan.

“Morning,” Daniel murmured with a smile, turning to face his Alpha and run a gentle hand through his hair. “Double world champ.”

Max took a moment to stifle a yawn before grinning. “Sounds okay doesn’t it?”

“Very okay,” Danie agreed.

“Mm sorry it hasn’t worked out for you this year,” Max said, accent thick as it always was when the Alpha was still half asleep.

Daniel let out a shrewd giggle at that and pressed a kiss to Max’s head. “Max Emilian, you are a double world champion, you’ve achieved everything you ever wanted, and you’re sad that I didn’t find a seat?!”

Max frowned lightly. “I have what I always wanted right here,” he replied bluntly, squeezing his arms around Daniel, his response honest and plain in his usual Max way. And it still made Daniel’s heart swoop and his inner Omega coo so softly.

It took a minute for him to stop being a gooey mess before Daniel spoke again, untangling himself from Max to pull a toiletry bag from his nightstand. “I want to show you something,” he told Max softly, handing Max his packet of birth control pills and suppressant pills. “Its a present!”

Max just frowned at the packets for a moment. “I don’t think I need these?”

Daniel just rolled his eyes. “They’re full packets.”

Max just blinked at him.

“As in I haven’t been taking them,” Daniel continued slowly, trying to get Max to connect the dots.

“Isn’t that a bad idea if the season isn’t over?” Max stated, and Daniel sighed.

“Well maybe you have a point yes,” he sighed and ran a hand through his curls. “But I was thinking, if I’m not driving next season… we could consider the break a maternity leave.”

Daniel could practically hear the cogs whirring in Max’s brain, but eventually his eyes widened. “You really want that?” He asked softly, Daniel nodded and Max’s smile was brighter than he’d ever seen. “Like now?”

“Like now,” Dan agreed, and Max barely let him finish before launching himself at Daniel, kissing him passionately and giggling.

“I really, really love you,” Max promised, and the sincerity in his eyes made Daniel melt yet again. Not long now, Daniel hoped, and he’d get to make Max a Papa.

Hey! I saw you leave a reply on a blazed post about bigoted staff at Tumblr! Could you point me in the right direction to learn more? I do not want to support a website with where money is going into bigoted pockets.

Hi there, I'm assuming good faith here and will say that the simple truth of it comes down to tumblr being a company with a company's motivations, it's not a friend and there is many posts on here by black users detailing the countless ways the runners of this website are virulently antiblack. People's money going into checkmarks and the blaze feature could and should be tangible help spent elsewhere

It unfortunately doesn't take long to identify how this website let's bigotry run rampant and I could give an ocean of examples at the top of my head so I'll list a few

Blaze posts get vetted before they're approved for publishing and there's been many instances of posts by terfs being allowed to spread fascist ideology. There's also been nudes by white people put on people's feeds via blaze whereas clothed, sfw pictures of black people have gotten flagged, blazed or not.

There's many, many Nazis on this website whose blogs are allowed to stay up (some of which have even ended up on my dashboard via the messy "based on your likes" function which has put a lot of dodgy shit on my feed but a military aesthetics blog by a Hungarian Nazi was by far the most enraging) while black people's accounts get suspended for nothing.

When people were posting about Ferguson the tag on here got suppressed and now tumblr changed its icon to a black woman and put 'black women, take care of your mental health' or something in a header banner which especially given this site's track record is beyond patronising garbage

I can't remember the details but there was also an instance of a user getting their account suspended specifically for talking about (talking about, not threatening mind you) the tumblr of an avowed harry potter fan staff member who's likely still part of running the website.

Tumblr has seen a 125% profit increase through blaze and checkmarks and a lot of people who search for a sense of identity in consumption believe using tumblr or giving money to tumblr over other websites is doing good when tumblr is just another cog in the wheel of capital that couldn't give less of a shit about people. Many people on here in dire need of mutual aid for survival are forced to see people having spent an exorbitant amount of money for a bunch of checkmark icons next to their usernames which literally says nothing other than "money was spent on these!!". If it's someone's joy to show how much money they've given to a website people should in fact take issue with that and interrogate where that need comes from. The checkmarks aren't a "funny dunk" on Musk's twitter takeover it's a profit margin a company saw and used successfully.

My legendary wife simply responds to blazed posts especially from users with checkmarks by long windedly talking about bowel movements for example which is infinitely funnier and probably more effective to discourage people from blazing their posts than my attempts to appeal to someone's sense of reason but who's to say lol

Blog Post 2 (January 20, 2023)

After making my first blog post I continued to work on my Humans of New York poster. I kept the same text and paragraph I originally picked out. I did this because I found a certain sentence interesting. That sentence was “We were like cogs in a wheel.”. I ended up using this sentence as a header because I thought that it would catch the attention of people and make them want to read the poster. After experimenting and critiquing the first draft of the poster I ended up wanting to use a different picture. I thought overall the new picture fit the composition of the poster better. After printing out the poster I realized that I could probably make the text smaller. I also noticed some hyphens within the paragraph that should be fixed to make it easier to read and look better presentation wise. 

After reading chapter one of “Typographic Design: Form and Communication” I realized that typography goes back in history farther than I ever thought it did. I always knew that cuneiform was the first type of writing due to history classes I have had before but I never thought about it as a form of typography. I think this is mainly because of how far typography has come over the years and how different it is now compared to then when cuneiform was invented.

I had a great couple of weeks fixing bugs, exposing EXIF and other embedded metadata better, and making it easier for anyone to run the client from source.

EXIF

I added tentative EXIF support a little while ago. It wasn't very good--it never knew if a file had EXIF before you checked, so it was inconvenient, and non searchable--but the basic framework was there. This week I make that prototype more useful.

First off, the client doesn't just look at EXIF. It also scans images and animations for miscellaneous 'human-readable embedded metadata'. This is often some technical timing or DPI data, or information about the program that created the file, but, most neatly, for the new AI/ML-drawn images everyone has been playing with, many of the generation engines embed the creation prompt in the header of the output png, and this is now viewable in the client!

Secondly, the client now knows ahead of time which files have this data to show. A new file maintenance job will be scheduled on update for all your existing images and animations to retroactively check for this, and they will fill in in the background over the next few weeks. You can now search for which files have known EXIF or other embedded metadata under a new combined 'system:embedded metadata' predicate, which works like 'system:dimensions' and also bundles the old 'system:has icc profile' predicates.

Also, the 'cog' button in the media viewer's top hover window where you would check for EXIF is replaced by a 'text on window' icon that is only in view if the file has something to show.

Have a play with this and let me know how it goes. The next step here will be to store the actual keys and values of EXIF and other metadata in the database so you can search them specifically. It should be possible to allow some form of 'system:EXIF ISO level>400' or 'system:has "parameters" embedded text value'.

running from source

I have written Linux (.sh) and macOS (.command) versions of the 'running from source' easy-setup scripts. The help is updated too, here:

I've also updated the setup script and process to be simpler and give you guidance on every decision. If you have had trouble getting the builds to work on your OS, please try running from source from now on. Running from source is the best way to relieve compatibility problems.

I've been working with some users to get the Linux build, as linked above, to have better mpv support. We figured out a solution (basically rolling back some libraries to improve compatibility), so more users should get good mpv off the bat from the build, but the duct tape is really straining here. if you have any trouble with it, or if you are running Ubuntu 22.04 equivalent, I strongly recommend you just move to running from source.

If these new scripts go well, I think that, in two or three months, I may stop putting out the Linux build. It really is the better way to run the program, at least certainly in Linux where you have all the tools already there. You can update in a few seconds and don't get crashes!

misc highlights

If you are interested in changing page drag and drop behaviour or regularly have overfull page tab bars, check the new checkboxes in options->gui pages.

If you are on Windows and have the default options->style, booting the client with your Windows 'app darkmode' turned on should magically draw most of the client stuff in the correct dark colours! Switching between light and dark while the program is running seems buggy, but this is a step forward. My fingers are crossed that future Qt versions improve this feature, including for multiplatform.

Thanks to a user, the twitter downloader is fixed. The twitter team changed a tiny thing a few days ago. Not sure if it is to do with Elon or not; we'll see if they make more significant changes in future.

I fixed a crazy bug in the options when you edit a colour but find simply moving the mouse over the 'colour gradient' rectangle would act like a drag, constantly selecting. This is due to a Qt bug, but I patched it on our side. It happens if you have certain styles set under options->style, and the price of fixing the bug is I have to add a couple seconds of lag to booting and exiting a colour picker dialog. If you need to change a lot of colours, then set your style to default for a bit, where there is no lag.

next week

I pushed it hard recently, and I am due a cleanup week, so I am going to take it easy and just do some refactoring and simple fixes.

Make sure you’ve saved anything you were working on beforehand though. Hit the Restart Now button which is located under the Advanced start-up header. I’m going to do a little walk through; as it gets quite long, it will be under the cut.

First of all, make sure you have the newest version of the code installed.

In the customization panel, click the link “edit HTML” at the top of the page (Fig. 1).

This opens a new panel where you paste the code (Fig. 2).

After pasting the code, you should see that green button at the top that says “update preview” is enabled now (Fig. 3). Click on that.

A blue button which says “save” appears on the left of the green button. Click that to save the changes (Fig. 4).

Then, click on the left-facing arrow on the top left of the page (Fig. 2); this takes you back to the customization panel. Scroll down in the left sidebar of the panel, where the customization options are. The toggles can be found in the section “template options”. There, you will see the toggle “Header”, which allows you to disable the header (Fig. 5).

Next, you click on the blue toggle next to “Header” to disable it. It will turn gray (Fig. 6) and the full-page header will not be shown anymore.

As you can see in Fig. 6, the blue “Save” button is enabled again; click on it to save the changes so they go into effect on your actual blog.

What’s new in Moodle 4.0+

Moodle 4.0 is released in April 2022 and it contains significant UX and UI improvements desired by the whole Moodle community. In this blog post we have listed all of the improvements and new features related to Moodle courses.

New course tabbed navigation design

Prior to Moodle 4.0, all of the course management related options are hidden under the “Actions Dropdown Menu” which is only accessible by clicking the cog icon in the course header area. Moodle 4.0 revamped the old dropdown menu system and replaced it with a tabbed navigation system. The new navigation system contains all the contextual management options related to the current course page which is more intuitive to users.

New course sliding side panels

Moodle 4.0 added two sliding side panels on the left and right hand side of the course page.

Left Panel

The left panel contains the course index items. It not only provides a quick way for learners to jump to a specific course section or activity/resource, it also enables course teacher/admin to rearrange the course activities/resources by dragging and dropping them directly in the panel.

Right Panel

The right panel contains the course side blocks. Prior to Moodle 4.0 all of the side blocks were displayed on the course page which took up valuable screen space. Now users can toggle the panel to hide the blocks and focus on the course content.

Extra information for course activity

Moodle 4.0 displays extra information for each activity. For example, the assignment activity displays “opened date” and “due date” under the activity description

Thoughts on Thomas and Alastair reading red white and Royal blue together in modern AU.

uhm yES PLEASE

This contains spoilers for Red, White and Royal Blue. Enjoy!

Imagine them in bed right after dinner cause they're one of those couples who ditch their friends to read

Thomas coming back home with this book Matthew and Cordelia have been ranting about for the past weeks

And Alastair is weirded out by the fact that he has two copies, "Why would you buy two?"

Thomas just shrugs, "I didn't. Cordelia gave me hers, cause she told me you'd spoil anything the second you read it."

They settle in bed and Alastair waits until Thomas is ten pages in to start his, cause Cordelia wasn't wrong about him spoiling everything

Thomas is a calm reader, only crying when you're supposed to cry and reading a book without having to talk about it for the rest of your life

Alastair is the complete opposite

He frowns and screams at the books and always goes to Thomas to make him read single sentences before starting to rant about what fucked up shit the characters are doing

Thomas usually doesn't understand anything of what he says, but he also stops doing whatever he's doing, focusing all his attention on Alastair until he just storms out of the room to continue reading the book

Alastair is also a ugly crier when it comes to books

And a thrower

He once hit Thomas by mistake and it was because of a character's death. Imagine his guilt just adding to his grief and picture a very distraught Alastair while he's being coddled by his boyfriend

Alastair has laughed and chuckled way too many times in Thomas' opinion, but hasn't commented on anything yet

Until, "Oh my sweet jesus, bOY YOUR GAY IS SHOWING."

Thomas has to laugh at that and turns towards him, "What happened?"

Alastair is shaking his head in disbelief, "Alex is hating Henry with every fiber of his body one page and then he's brushing his posters the next? He's dumb."

"He reminds me of someone." he mutters

Alastair ignores him

"I'm living for Henry calling Alex out on his shit behaviour." Alastair whispers at some point, with a large smile on his face

Something hits Thomas on the leg and when he looks up he notices Alastair with his eyes and mouth wide, "The cAKE!"

"Homoerotic frat bro mishap - gotta love this woman."

"Tom," he calls him, "have you ever hate-read my wikipedia page?"

"You don't have a wik-"

"But, honestly, who does he think he's fooling? This boy is dumb dumb." He laughs, "Mad stupid."

From time to time Thomas just hears "Stan Zahra." or "Stan Ellen." and he just smiles

At some point Alastair just screams-laughs and goes "I'm going to thROW UP ON YOU, I'M DYING." before falling silent again without any trace of amusement seconds later

Thomas is startled when Alastair screech, "BABYY!"

"What?"

"ALEX IS SAYING HENRY'S SKIN IS SOFT."

Thomas is enjoying the book just as much, but he can't wait for the moment when they both realise they like each other, so he just keeps reading

"Alex was fAST starting to see Henry as a human being and not some kind of monster."

"Oh my god, why is Alex being such a dickhead-"

After a few minutes of silence, Alastair gasps, bringing his book higher and buring his face between the pages before screeching again.

"WHAT'S GOING OOON?"

Thomas snorts with wide eyes

"HE'S CHECKING FOR HENRY'S TEXTS!!!"

After a while, Alastair turns to Thomas, brushing his arm, "Are you liking it?"

He nods, "I like the fact that Henry uses capitals at the beginning of his texts while Alex doesn't, it's the little things."

During The Turkey Scene™️ Alastair just loses it and Thomas has to stop reading to calm him down

"Oh god Tom fucking finally-" he turns to Thomas, "Henry looks fucking rested for once."

Thomas nods again, "And Alex noticed."

That makes a wide grin spread over Alastair's face

Thomas understands he's reached the New Year's Eve when all he can hear from Alastair are gasps and curses

"NO. NONONO. NOO!" Alastair hits Thomas on the arm, "Alex just kissed Nora and Henry ran away."

Thomas smirks, "Just keep reading."

"THEY'RE KISSING. GOD YES. THEY'RE KISSING."

"NOOOOO!" Alastairs screams, "WHY DID HE LEAVE WTF?!?!"

"Thomas I'm breaking up with you if you don't tell me now this is gonna be fixed somehow in the next three pages."

Thomas just clicks his tongue, shaking his head

"Wha-" Alastair just huffs a laugh. He turns to Thomas, pointing to the book, "Baby have you read this? Alex is- He thinks he's what now?" He's straight up laughing now, "Straight?!"

"He did what with Liam?"

"This is literally the gayest shit I've ever read in my life."

"Nah ha, I don't believe it."

"How can he think he's straight?"

"Oh god they watched porn together- HE JERKED HIM OFF."

Alastair just hits his head against the headboard, "I didn't think I'd have to go through the who the fuck am I in this book. I THOUGHT IT WAS PRETTY CLEAR JUST BY THE FACT THAT HE FUCKING CARESSED HENRY'S POSTERS."

"AND THEN THIS NEVERENDING LIST OF GAY THINGS."

Alastair panicked for a short time when Henry was seen with that blonde but started screeching again after a moment

Thomas bursts into laughter when he heard Alastair mutters God save the Queen

"'I want you on the bed.' OH JESUS CHRIST THOMAS IT'S US."

"Tom?"

Thomas turns when he hears the hesitancy in his boyfriend's voice. Alastair's face is red and he's biting his lower lip

"You okay? What part are you reading?"

"No, uhm," Alastair scratches his head, "can we -" he clears his voice, "Can we make out?"

Thomas blinks a couple of times, "Sure."

A heavy make out session ensues before they both can start reading again

"We need to buy cupcakes tomorrow." Alastair mutters at some point, chewing on his lip

"Thomas this fucking book is the best thing I've ever read. I'm loving it so much."

Alastair closes the book around midnight, but Thomas knows he's not finished. He doesn't look his way thinking he's just gonna go to the bathroom

When Thomas senses him move around on the sheets and lay his head on hip lap, he closes the book too and look down at his boyfriend

"What's going on? We just made out."

Alastair grunts in his legs and looks up at him, "You're my match."

Thomas doesn't understand, but he smiles and leans down to kiss him

He resumes reading and realises Alastair had read more than him when he reaches Alex's and Ellen's conversation about matches. Thomas looks at Alastair once again and pesters him with kisses

It's around 3am when Alastair starts yawning

"Alas, you should go to bed."

He shakes his head, "No, I'm not tired, I wanna finish the book."

"The book will be here tomorrow."

"I don't care."

He drops the fight, knowing perfectly fine that he'll never win this

Alastair can be quite impressive when he finds something he likes - especially when it's books

"Fucking homophobes."

"I'm gonna riot if somebody doesn't let Alex call Henry right the fuck now."

"HENRY ASKED ALEX IF HE IS OKAY? BABY WE'RE WORRIED ABOUT YOU."

The end of the book is read so fast that Thomas can't keep up with him and is now more than 20 pages back

Alastair is a crying and screaming mess by the end of it and Thomas has never seen him so upset in their time together

He's just spoiled the whole book for him, but he doesn't care. He doesn't care that it's now 5am and they have work in a couple of hours, cause Alastair just looks his way with wide eyes and his mouth open as if he's just realized something shocking

"Oh my god, did Pez, June and Nora had a threesome in that hotel room?"
