more royal dragons, this time the ones from arc 2/3! these were really fun, and the previous designs helped me get comfortable with more detailed jewelry designs, so these are a bit more extravagant.
design notes under the cut!
RUBY: i didn't realize how young she really is when i read escaping peril the first time, i thought she was in her mid-twenties at least but apparently she's only 12/17? wild. anyways i made her ruby red with some orange accents to point to tourmaline. her tiara is meant to look like laurels, studded with rubies, and the gems on her brows and wings are citrine.
GLORY: i already had a design for her, i just touched it up a bit here. she's very pretty, but her scales are notably duller than my other rainwing designs. she has pouches she wears around her neck because she likes to be prepared and is trying to connect more to her culture. at least one of those pockets has snacks for silver. the flower on her ear is a plumeria india, one of my favorite flowers.
THORN: easily my favorite design in the set, oh my god i love how she came out. she has the same colors as my sunny design but desaturated, and almost the same markings. her jewelry is mostly gold with onyx and lapis lazuli insets. the design for the eye of onyx is inspired by @dragonsndoodles's design, which looks absolutely gorgeous and way more elegant than the graphic novel version.
SNOWFALL: i think i made her too round and soft-looking? idk i think she's cute though. i definitely had to get those pale sunset colors in there, and she has similar colors/markings to glacier. the tiara is one she found in the treasury after the racism crown™ was destroyed, and the shawl was a gift from luna as a thanks for helping her tribe. silk doesn't help much against the cold, but it sure is pretty.
WASP: SCARY BITCH. i had to mess with her colors a lot, i wanted to make her kinda greenish with red accents but it just was NOT working. i do like where i ended up though. i don't know that she would wear much jewelry, probably more armor than anything else, but i wanted to do hivewing jewelry so here we are. the neck piece was really fun to design. these are steel and gold with amber and peridot accents, and the cape is silk with gold embroidery. i have this headcanon of her having breath of evil growing out of her like a cordyceps fungus, and she uses the cape to cover the tendrils on her back.
SEQUOIA: ooo she was a challenge, i'm not great at designs with a lot of green or a lot of dark colors so she was fun. her colors are inspired by @daily-wof-designs, and the brown tones were pulled from pictures of giant sequoias. she wears braided leather straps hung with aquamarine, and the scarf might be silk? or some kind of natural fiber? i'm not sure. but it has leaf designs and is probably batik dyed (which is super cool btw look it up)

You've Got Me | Julian x Jenny Thornton
Warnings: Light Smut
Characters: Jenny Thornton, Julian
AO3 Link
Summary: Jenny had always imagined that she'd lose her virginity to Tom, that they'd give each other themselves for the first time on their wedding night, and that it'd be a night full of fumbling touches, inexperience giving way to genuine love. The fantasy had once excited her.
Now, as Julian's hot breath lit up the skin between her throat and shoulder, one of his hands resting possessively on her hip while the other one began toying with the waistband of her exposed panties, Jenny felt excitement, yes, but in the way a rabbit felt her heart pound when it caught the wolf's scent blow in from upwind.
---
Julian looked at Jenny with soft adoration, his eyes scanning the flushed pinks of her embarrassment, or perhaps eagerness. She sat on his lap, facing him, his legs between hers, dressed in the clothes she had entered the Game in minus the batik vest and blouse. Her shirts laid in a pile beside the replica of her grandfather's couch. When Julian helped her--urged her, rather--out of them, he unceremoniously dumped them to the side. As if he couldn't bare not to touch her, his hands met her waist, pulling her close so her near-bare chest pressed against his own fully clothed one, his mouth meeting hers in an open-mouthed kiss. Electricity sparked at the contact, and a chill bit her newly exposed flesh, even where Julian's hand caressed. The muscles of her waist clenched beneath his grip.
Jenny forced herself get lost in the kiss. A warmth spread throughout her body, pleading for something more. Making out–Jenny’s mind halted at that, making out was what horny human teenagers did, and although Julian took the appearance of one, some primal part within her screamed that this person, he is not safe!--was okay. This territory felt familiar enough to quiet the internal screaming. Kissing, even the light groping felt safe enough to enjoy. Sweet, safe Tommy had gone this far with her before.
But then Jenny felt her thighs clench tighter, holding onto Julian, and then he broke away to look at her, his beautiful blue eyes cloudy in the amber lights of her grandfather’s antique lamps, darkened with lust. Fear prickled her skin. She made herself look at him, and flinched. He stare was intense, just like everything else about him.
Julian reached up to brush his palm over her cheek, much like he had done in the Erlking's castle, and kissed her softly. Just one, small brush of their lips, and when he drew away again, Jenny noticed the room had changed--when had she closed her eyes, she wondered. Her skirt had ridden up enough for her calves to feel the change of fabric go from rough to something silken, a satin bed sheet perhaps. She saw that the amber light was gone. Old, dusty light bulbs had been replaced by something dimmer, something colder. Her breath caught, a lump beginning to harden at the base of her throat. The light flickered like candlelight and whatever dancing rays Julian saw in her face, he must've liked them because he smiled. His genuine smile—not a smirk, without a trace of cruel mirth or superiority—left Jenny feeling even more undressed.
"Beautiful," he said softly. In any other circumstance, that otherworldly tone would've made Jenny swoon, but her body tightened, and the warmth she had felt in the pit of her stomach pulsed. She felt it feverishly, bordering on nausea. Her hands tensed, gripping his shoulders tighter. He returned the gesture, giving her sides a squeeze.
For a moment, she hoped her palms weren’t noticeably clammy.
He leaned forward, aiming for her neck. Jenny gasped, his hot breath juxtaposing with the cold she felt increasing everywhere else on her body. She became aware of every breath she took, her chest beginning to heave and press harder against Julian’s arhythmically. Swallowing her nerves, she tried to speak around the growing panic stuck in her throat. To her ears, she sounded so small. as small as a skittish mouse. "I’ve never done this before." She felt embarrassed--more embarrassed, rather. He probably knew that already. He had watched her for the better part of her whole life.
She swallowed.
"I know,” Julian laughed. He sounded much lighter, happier than he did during the Game. Why wouldn’t he, she thought, he had won, and now he was claiming his prize. He kissed higher, between her thunderous pulse and the underside of her ears—Jenny could feel how hot her face was, surely she must be bright red, how strange it was to be too hot and too cold all at once—and said, “Don't worry, I’ve got you, Jenny.”
Another kiss, and this time Jenny felt him suck at her skin. Her gaze flew skyward, eyes fluttering, and she moaned.
“That’s it,” he encouraged, "I've got you." Another kiss, a hint of teeth. "I'll make you feel good." Jenny bit her lip. His bite felt like a pinch, followed by a soft, coaxing tongue. The kisses were coming too fast, she thought. Julian inhaled deeply. "Tommy can't ever touch you, not like this—”
Nails lightly dug into her sides, and Jenny jerked in Julian’s hold—
“Never.”
His mouth traveled lower, teething nipping at her skin, his grip tightening more. His hips shifted beneath her, and then Jenny really did feel herself swooning.
Julian wrapped his arms around her waist and hips, and in one fluid motion, Jenny found herself beneath him. She looked at the new ceiling above her; it was so far from the exposed pipes and wooden planks she knew to be in her grandfather’s basement. Teeth pulled at her throat, and Jenny stilled. Julian was getting angry again.
Interlocking her ankles behind his back, Jenny pulled his hips closer. Resting her palm on his chin, she took another shaky breath and forced herself to gently raise his head so she could meet his eyes. His own were half-lidded, his dark lashes were heavy. He didn’t look tired at all, though.
No, he was ravenous.
She racked her brain to find something to say. She didn’t want to be broken in this way, by a possessive and violent demon that believed himself capable of loving her, even holding her life and the lives of her friends hostage just to have her—own her. Her eyes stung when she agreed, “Yes, you’ve got me, Julian.” Beneath him, she lifted her head to brings her mouth to his, hers and his breaths warm and heavy. “You’ve got me.” And she kissed him, hoping he didn’t see the stinging shine in her eyes.

How Natural Dyes Are Made And Used To Create Beautiful, One-Of-A-Kind Projects
Natural dye powders are made from dried and ground plants, minerals, and other natural sources. They are a great eco-friendly and biodegradable way to gently add beautiful hues and patterns to your fabrics, yarns, paper, and other crafts. Unlike synthetic dyes, these natural dye powders have been used for centuries to create color while being gentle on your skin and the environment.
Natural dye powders can produce a range of hues, from vibrant to subtle, depending on the source, mordant, and dyeing process used. This article explores how natural dyes are made and used to create beautiful, one-of-a-kind projects.
Tumblr media
How To Make Natural Dye Powders
Making your natural dye powders can be easy and enjoyable. You can use fresh or dried plant materials like flowers, leaves, roots, bark, seeds, nuts, berries, or even insects to produce dyes. Experimenting with different combinations and ratios of these ingredients lets you create custom colors. Common sources for natural dyes include indigo, madder, turmeric, cochineal bugs, marigold flowers, and walnut hulls.
The dried petals and leaves are chopped and crushed to increase surface area and release more color. They are completely dehydrated to prevent mold and bacterial growth. Drying time varies based on the type and size of the material. The dehydrated materials are then pulverized into fine powders and sifted to remove large pieces and impurities. Different powders can be mixed to create new colors. The powders are stored in airtight containers like glass jars, plastic bags, or metal tins, labeled with the name and manufacturing date. For the best preservation of color and quality, the powder containers should be kept in a cool, dry, dark place.
How To Use Natural Dye Powders
Natural dye powders and synthetic dyes share some similarities in how they are used - both require preparing the fabric or yarn, dissolving the dye powder, and soaking the material in a dye bath. However, natural dyes have some key differences and helpful tips to know:
Before dyeing, wash your fabric or yarn to remove any dirt, oil, or residue that could hinder dye absorption. You can use natural dye powders on natural fibers like cotton, linen, wool, silk, or hemp, but synthetic fibers such as polyester, nylon, or acrylic will not readily absorb the dyes.
To achieve the best results, select an appropriate mordant such as alum, iron, copper, or vinegar to help the dye bond to the fiber and improve colorfastness. Most natural dye powders require a mordant, though some like indigo and walnut do not. Follow the instructions for the mordant and dye to determine the proper amounts and application method. Different mordants produce different color shades and effects.
To create a vivid dye solution, dissolve the natural dye powder in hot water, using enough liquid to fully submerge the material. Stir the solution thoroughly until the powder dissolves evenly. For brighter, more intense colors, add salt or vinegar. Use a pot, bucket, or jar for mixing the dye bath.
To dye your material, immerse it in the simmering dye bath and soak for at least an hour, stirring occasionally. The dyeing time, temperature, and pH of the bath will affect the shade and dyeing effects. You can also use techniques like tie-dye, shibori, or batik to create patterns and designs.
Rinse the material in cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess dye, then wash it with a mild detergent. Hang the rinsed and washed material to dry in the shade or indoors, avoiding direct sunlight or heat that could fade the color.

Some Tips And Tricks In The Dyeing Process
Let's find out some tricks to get the best results from your natural dyeing:
Experiment with different dye powders, fabrics, mordants, and methods to create your unique colors and patterns.
Label your pots, spoons, and other utensils to avoid cross-contamination and confusion.
Wear rubber gloves, apron, and mask to protect yourself from stains and fumes.
Use stainless steel, enamel, or glass pots and utensils, as they are non-reactive and easy to clean.
Avoid using aluminum, iron, or copper pots and utensils, as they can alter the color and quality of your dye.
Keep a record of your formulae, measurements, and results, so you can replicate or modify them in the future.
Have fun and enjoy the process of natural dyeing!
