Ok so I’m rereading The Darkest Minds and have decided to share my personal headcannons about the characters and story and yeah

It is mentioned multiple times in book 1 that the kids in the camps were in a “camp diet” meaning that they got very little food because there were so many kids and so little people producing it. (Chubs was actually chubby before he came to camp and after just a year or so he’s whip thin) Ruby was at the Thurmond for 6 years from the age 10-16… she is extremely undernourished and most likely had her growth stunted

All colors have a certain twitch or tic they have and as the color goes up from green to red, it gets more intense or prevalent. Greens canonically have a certain slightly dragging walk, blues might have a habit of drumming their fingers or tapping, yellows bounce their legs a lot and have occasional muscle twitches, oranges have a certain type of echolalia or repetitive motion when doing a task, and reds canonically tap and twitch violently.

After 6 year in a camp Ruby can not get enough of the radio or listening to music. Multiple times she just stays back in Betty and leans her head against the radio to better hear and feel the beat from songs.

All camp kids have dealt with their food being stolen or taken so they’ve developed the habit of hunching around their food and eating as fast as they can. By the time Ruby joins the Betty group they’ve began to break that habit themselves but it takes a long time for Ruby to break this, especially with her time spent in the League.

Cole Stewart can and will use his abilities to cook food when he's lazy. Because of this he has grown used to eating burnt food

Ruby opened up to Zu after a while about the year that she too went nonverbal while at Thurmond. It helps Zu feel a lot better about her own response to trauma and her coping

im rereading ita and honestly there’s no point to Cole’s death. The entire thing just gets overshadowed by everyone hoping it’s not Liam, being mad at Clancy, and worrying about Ruby.

If Cole hadn’t died, he would’ve absolutely dominated the room, when Chubs made his speech. Could have made everything easier, and he definitely would have found Ruby quick as lightning, what with all his connections.

Because after re-reading (the first 3/4 of) In the Afterlight, and noting down all my thoughts along the way, I realized that my notes marked a slow disintegration of my sanity and my faith towards the man, the idiot, the legend, Liam Michael Stewart.

A question that’s been bouncing around in my head for a while is: did Clancy Gray love Nico?

I’ve been debating this internally because literally no one in my life wants to read or have in depth discussions about TDM, so I have to have them with myself.

Post-East River we’re of the understanding that Clancy Gray is an evil little weasel(he is) that cares for no one but himself. Of course throughout In The Afterlight we’re given a different perspective, he might be a piece of shit and he might be selfish but he does think about other people and what would be right for them(even if his methods are corrupt). Until the end of ITAL I didn’t think there was anything that Clancy truly loved other than power. I never thought that he felt any genuine romantic feelings towards Ruby. I think he liked her, but more importantly I think he liked her power. And he never held anyone else close enough to care about them.

But then there’s Nico… We know that Nico was in love with Clancy, that’s not a debate. He literally tells Ruby in ITAL. But does Clancy love Nico? Nico has been there for Clancy since they had been roommates and were experimented on together at Thurmond. In ITAL through Clancy’s memories we see Nico caring for him in a way that Ruby describes as loving/yearningly. Nico is willing to do practically anything Clancy. And during their time together at Thurmond, Clancy is extremely protective over Nico. It’s interesting that Clancy would choose to care for someone when he expressly believes that colors other than orange are less than. And Nico is green, the bottom of the food chain, I’m sure in Clancy’s opinion. And if we know one thing about Clancy Gray, it’s that he craves power and control. But Nico doesn’t have power and Clancy doesn’t want to control him, so why would Clancy keep him around?

Obligation? Kindness? Love? Towards the end of ITAL when it’s revealed that Clancy has been controlling Ruby in her sleep and having her send messages to PSFs to inform them of their location, we see a conversation play out between Clancy and Nico. Nico had been deeply hurt by Clancy’s second betrayal and is expressing his anger towards Clancy. Nico is begging him to call off whoever is coming and Clancy seems to almost give in. This of course is surprising to both readers and Ruby as Clancy seems to always be putting on a facade. Of course we know how it ends but it’s the fact that Clancy almost gave in to Nico’s pleads that is interesting to me.

To answer my own question: did Clancy Gray love Nico? Yes. Did he love Nico romantically? That could be debated. I think that Clancy loved Nico, but I also think that Clancy never knew how to love the way that Nico might have wanted. In another universe they might have been happy.

alexandra bracken really wrote the lines, “he would have fought to the death. he would have fought until he flamed out completely.” and expected me to believe that this is where and this is how cole's story ends.

like i REFUSE to believe that cole james stewart, the boy who spent his entire life protecting others (even before IAAN happened), or fighting iaan in different ways (getting nico out, training the other kids, training ruby, and looking out for the kids in the league) meets this kind of end.

like there's just no way that's how it ends for him. throughout ita, we saw glimpses of his growth but there was SO MUCH potential for his arc. him coming to terms with his powers, him bonding with lucas, him helping other red kids which we know he would've done, him reconnecting with his family, him BLOOMING.

i'm sure he would've gone through one of the most mind blowing character arcs ever and come out stronger than ever.

because at the end of the day, that's what he does. he stumbles, he falls, he breaks but he fights back.
