Concept for “Daredevil: Born Again”:
The first episode reveals that around the end of season 3, Matt Murdock was snapped out of existence by Thanos. When he’s brought back five years later, that’s when we get the opening credits. In a way, Matt was literally “born again”.
The rest of the episode is Matt trying to figure out what happened to his friends and allies. What he learns is:
1) Nelson & Murdock shut down. Foggy accepted a job at a larger firm while Karen Page moved to a different city.
2) Frank Castle is still on the loose and it’s speculated that he was the mysterious Ronin who wiped out New York’s criminal underground. We later learn that Frank was working with Clint Barton during his Ronin period, hence the rumors.
3) Luke Cage is a community leader who has given up crime-fighting. He says that he wasn’t getting anywhere beating up low-level criminals, especially since the Blip exacerbated problems in his community, so he’s shifted his focus to politics. Helping him is Misty Knight.
4) Jessica Jones is, reluctantly, working for the Daily Bugle. She says that she needed the work since Alias Investigations shut down during the Blip years.
5) Danny Rand is still missing. Colleen Wing says that the last she heard from him was that he was going to Ta Lo to deal with some “unfinished business”. Colleen also says that even though she still has her Iron Fist powers, the leaders of K’un-L’un don’t recognize her as the Iron Fist since she didn’t go through the “proper rituals” aka punch a dragon in its heart. She says that the leaders may have chosen a new Iron Fist, hinting at the arrival of Lin Lie aka the current Iron Fist from the comics.
After catching up with his friends, Matt decides to start over. He joins the firm that Foggy is working at, leading into the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “She-Hulk”. But just as he’s getting his life back together…he learns that Wilson Fisk has been freed and is rebuilding his empire (events of “Hawkeye”).
Episode 1 ends with Matt realizing that despite everything he did in the original show, Fisk and his criminal empire is still a threat. But things are going to be different now due to how much the world has changed post-Blip.
(Side note: Imagine this episode taking place before the events of “Echo”. The rest of the season is after Matt and Maya’s journey).

DEFENDERS' SAGA: the DAUGHTERS OF THE DRAGON series we deserved but never got... Claire Temple, NIGHT NURSE, is the awesome thread that links all the individual Defenders' series, beginning with DareDevil, then Jessica Jones, Luke Cage & eventually Iron Fist & The Defenders. she's mortal, moral, courageous, trained & medical, & committed to helping New York's injured & needy. Claire's such a wonderful character, casting & performance. Mercedes "Misty" Knight, is a tenatious & dedicated Detective, who's not afraid of Harlem & it's underbelly, & who throws herself into Cottonmouth & Luke Cage's fued, only to immerse herself in bigger & bigger corrupt practices. she's fearless, fiesty, fun & unstopable. she's mortal. Colleen Wing is young, poor, moral, & also mortal. her training & skills & wits are her three points for survival. her dedication to her craft & students & her community is indefatigable. she supports & bands with Daniel Rand & The Defenders because her ethics pitch her in oppposition to The Hand & their lethal practices. These three mortal women find themselves entwined with several enhanced individuals, & after their educated skepticism & ethical distancing from them, Claire, Misty & Colleen dedicate their skills, energy & abilities to enhancing the cause. they join the fight against their better judgement. their ethics & morals fuel the best of their intentions & actions. they are us audience in amongst the mele. they are our eyes & ears & dilemas. and they are TREMENDOUS. the characters, actresses & we audience all deserved a spin-off from the Defenders that developed Night Nurse, Misty & the Daughter of The Dragon: instead of just cancelling products that "don't work" (aren't viewed "enough") developing a 6-8part Daughters of The Dragon or similar, centering around Claire, Misty & Colleen could've KICKED-ASS! so many perspectives & experiences & skills & connections, with Claire expereiencing new symptoms & side-effects from a new pathogen, Misty investigating it officially, & Colleen tracing the clandestine activities, could've been an immense series covering Hell's Kitchen, Manhatten & Harlem. Imagine a multi-female-lead series!!! 3 women. 3 slam-dunk individuals who took no shit from anyone. can you IMAGINE! i really wish production houses & studios would listen & learn instead of just abandoning. hey-ho. maybe D+/Marvel will realise what they had & resurect Claire, Misty & Colleen after DD:Born Again is a HUGE SMASH HIT?

Modern AU Wessa HC-
What would be their take on some of the 'cultural zeitgeisty' series/novels/fantasy series? And maybe if they have different opinions what/where would they be? Or would any of the convos about novels prompt a certain type of banter?
So like:
Terry Pratchett / Discworld
ACOTAR/ Crescent City
Tolkien's LOTR
Fifty shades of grey!
What else...
Fourth WING BAHAHA
Samantha Shannon's novels
Laura Thalassa
'One Day'
Nicholas Sparks novels!
Atomic Habits
Colleen Hoover novels
A Cruel Prince
Lessons in Chemistry
Those kind of things! Obviously not specifically but I just listed them to give an idea. This is literally MY FAV thing to dream up about. What they would think about whatever novel I'm currently reading.
Things they would like: Discworld, LOTR, Samantha Shannon, Laura Thalassa, Nicholas Sparks, The Cruel Prince, Lessons in Chemistry.
Things they wouldn't like: Acotar/Crescent City/Throne of Glass, Fifty Shades (though Will would find it supremely hilarious), Fourth Wing (genuinely there is nothing to like), Colleen Hoover
I have never read the others so can't judge. Some of the ones on this list I also haven't read but know enough about to know they're Good (Discworld, thanks @themimsyborogove) or Bad (Fifty Shades). Also, ngl this is just whether I like them or not. I imagine that they have good taste, just like I do.

im more than halfway done reading fourth wing now and i gotta say i am SO sick of the weak fragile woman x strong emotionally dead man trope in all recent new adult/romance books.
it’s part of the reason i despise colleen hoover books lol, all she does is write spineless women who chase and boring two dimensional men who say “don’t fall for me” (sorry if you like her).
where is my representation? i need strong woman x strong man, man chases woman.
my old work besties loved chasing men, and that could never be me lmfao i am the prize. men chase me. i can’t even imagine a world where i would chase a MAN haha.
wishing those girls the best lol.
other than that, i like the world that yarros has written, but it’s not amazing. i’ve seen it before. her story is intriguing though, and it keeps me going, i want to know what happens next.
her side characters, and even the love interest, are so bland though. they mean nothing. even the main character is not very fully developed, she reminds me of bella swan.

Pretty please make your Marvel and RK crossover idea a reality with an HC when you have the time. PLEEEEEASE 🖤
Thank you for the Ask. Sorry for the delayed answer but I hope this fits!🧩🧩🧩
CW: Some spoilers ahead if you're yet to view the following series.
ReiKasa x Marvel Cinematic Universe Crossover Headcanon #023
Tumblr media
Reiner and Mikasa both are very profound in terms of their raw strength and savior energies. In cross fandom universes, they would be the ultimate superhero couple. Well, Reiner very possibly would begin as an anti-hero from Marley who would eventually discover an initial kindred spirit type of camaraderie before it develops into an intense battle synergy & palpable chemistry with the all-Eldian super heroine, Mikasa Ackerman. From two opposing forces, Reiner and Mikasa would somehow find their stars aligned in the cosmos that would bind them together as each other's ride or die. With that in mind, these 3 pairings from the Marvel Cinematic Universe would best be embodied by ReiKasa in their own special ways.
1) Thor & Mighty Thor (Jane Foster)
Tumblr media
Apart from sharing similar physique - buff and sturdy body frame and roguish facial shape and hair, Reiner embraces Thor's honor, pride and an almost fallen out of grace moment in his life as he goes through a period of lost and searching for himself. Thor finds himself allying with the Guardians of the Galaxy in order to save the remaining humanity from Thanos (which more or less had an almost similar ideal as SnK's big bad, Eren Jeager), same as what Reiner did in SnK's final arc when he allied with the surviving elite members of the Survey Corps.
Meanwhile, Mikasa would embody the Mighty Thor's relentless fight for the greater good even if she knows that by doing so, she would be sacrificing the most important part of herself all for humanity. This resonated so well in SnK's canonverse. Mikasa has a steely resolve to save humanity at all costs, the same way Jane Foster did as the Mighty Thor. If Mjolnir had chosen Jane as the one worthy enough to wield it, the Founder Ymir had chosen Mikasa to be the one who eventually eliminates the Titan curse & liberates her from her 2,000 years worth of inter-dimensional self-imposed imprisonment.
Traits: The couples shares resilience, bravery and impeccable teamwork.
And just imagine, Thor!Reiner holding Stormbreaker standing back to back with MightyThor!Mikasa wielding Mjolnir as the God & Goddess of Thunder?
💯 Fresh & Epic!
2) Iron Fist (Danny Rand) & Colleen Wing
Tumblr media
Dubbed as the daughter of the Dragon, Colleen Wing is a martial artist and instructor. Similar to Mikasa, who's of Japanese blood (Hizuru in SnK), both are exceptional blade wielders and hardened fighters. Where Colleen used Chi manipulation, Mikasa was blessed with awakened Ackerman powers that blessed them both with superhuman strength. Both bear a strong character based on discipline, and both prefer to fight their own battles rather than have someone else do the job for them. Mikasa & Colleen uphold a specific code of conduct - loyalty, courage, veracity, compassion, and honor above all else.
Meanwhile, Reiner and Danny, were both blessed with amazing powers from a mythical legend. Both were forced to survive through a rough childhood and intense systematic training as children. Danny inherited the power of the Iron Fist through the heart of K'un-Lun's mythical beast, Shun-Lao the Undying while Reiner inherited the power of the Armored Titan through his predecessor.
Traits: The couples are very in-sync in battles with complementing styles & moves. And yes, exceptional tag team energy.
3) Moon Knight (Marc Spector/Steven Grant) & Scarlet Scarab (Layla El-Faouly)
Tumblr media
Marc Spector (Moon Knight) is a character which is well known for his DID, whereas he has 3 identities/alters which draw similarities to Reiner's duality in the series (despite SnK's guidebook stating that it's fictional 'schizophrenia'), where it was shown that Reiner dissociated heavily that he had two sides - Warrior and Soldier. It may not necessarily be a different consciousness but it involved something as equally complex. Both Marc and Reiner's psyche began to split due to a traumatic incident when they were younger and both are/were in military. Where Marc Spector (one of the alters) was chosen as an avatar by the Egyptian Moon God, Khonshu, Reiner was chosen to wield the Armored, one of the Nine Titans in his universe.
Layla is Marc's (& Stephen) wife who works together with her husband to stop a villain & an ancient deity from unleashing judgment & destruction upon humanity, very similar to Reiner, Mikasa and the Alliance's combined efforts to stop Eren Jeager's the Rumbling through the ancient Founder's will. Layla, (spoiler alert!), is also a chosen avatar by one of the Egyptian Goddess, granting her many abilities including superhuman strength, agility, durability, stamina and reflexes, which are similar to Mikasa's Awakened Ackerman powers.
Traits: The couples have distintinctive battle prowess and deeply care about the other. Despite the challenges and separation, they persevered to protect mankind through the powers that were bestowed upon them.
----
It's a bit shorter than usual but thanks again for the fun Ask! 💕💯

I got to 'Facade' (The Death of Element Girl) in my reread today, and I keep getting stuck on how despite the fact that it's one of my favorite issues, it's probably for the best that it's almost certainly not gonna make it into the show. Like, it's such *good* comics craft; the lineart and the paneling and *especially* the colors are so well chosen, and it's so fucking heartbreaking, and in so many ways it's a shame we won't see it onscreen (given Death's speech about locking the universe behind her was transposed into 'The Sound of Her Wings', I think we can be fairly confident they're going to leave it out assuming there is a season two) but also, it's the kind of precious to me that means I don't necessarily want to see it raked over the coals by the larger public consciousness. If you want this tender, bleak, awful story about one woman's life-ending despair, you have to earn it. You have to be willing to care about the comics as transcendent art in their own right, and be willing to accept them at their darkest and cruelest. Because yeah, I think the message that Death is willing to assist a catastrophically depressed young woman kill herself instead of trying to talk her down is a very 90s kind of cynical, and doesn't age particularly well and isn't the message "we" (fandom, society, various outgroups likely to care about Sandman, you name it) need these days, but 'Facade' is an incredible piece of tragic writing nevertheless. And honestly, one can easily see the larger narrative parallels and imagine Death remembering her choice to help Rainie kill herself rather than talk her down when the only choice she has left at the end of 'The Kindly Ones' is to help her brother kill himself because she's too late to talk him down. It hurts. It's the kind of bleak that honestly doesn't mesh well with the parts of the show that have changed (and yes, there is something to that, that *change*, isn't there?) in adaptation. 'Facade' goes hand in hand with '24 Hours', and clashes particularly discordant with the somewhat defanged (imo) '24/7'. I don't think the modern show only audience would particularly enjoy it, and part of me is glad that I don't have to defend something I care about as art and story so much in a cultural moment where people are seriously suggesting that tragedy is unnecessary to great storytelling. I appreciate it a lot, I guess, and while I'm sad it won't make it to the big screen, it means the story gets to stand alone, and be only what it is. Every difference in story between the original issues is a deliberate adaptation choice, and the choice not to portray 'Facade' is in itself, adaptation as much as any other choice. But it's good, and well-crafted, and worth reading for all it is also devastating, and I do recommend it.
'Facade' is issue #20 of The Sandman, written by Neil Gaiman, penciled by Colleen Doran, inked by Malcolm Jones III, colored (phenomenally) by Steve Oliff, and lettered by Todd Klein. Element Girl was created by Bob Haney and Ramona Fradon.

Imagine Misty and Colleen babysitting your and Danny's kids:
Tumblr media
Colleen wanted to warn her that she probably shouldn't have said hell, that the kids would be repeating it all night, but she knew Misty didn't need anymore attitude. Instead she watched the kids look from one another, not understanding what they did wrong. Not only had they gotten into the paints, but the glitter as well. You'd tried to put it on a high enough shelf where they could only get to it if an adult helped them. They were your kids though, creative as they were cunning, and found a way to get it down themselves. Misty wasn't sure how she was going to explain this or clean it up, but she had to do both by the time you got home. You'd warned them more than a few times that, as much as you loved them, they could be a pain in the ass. They got into things they weren't supposed to and said all the words you told them not to. Misty joked that sounded a lot like you, but she never imagined this.

Preference: Marvel (The Defenders)
— how they react to you wanting to join them on their missions
Characters: Colleen Wing, Frank Castle, Matthew Murdock, Mercedes Knight
Warnings: mentions of violence
Requester: @brayinghorses / @dukesimagines
Request: “That's ok!!! Preference Marvel: How they'd react to you asking to join them on their missions, Frank Castle, Matt Murdock, Colleen Wing, and Misty Knight?”
A/N: I hope you like it!!!
Colleen Wing
Tumblr media
Colleen would be surprised, and although she would hesitate at first because she doesn’t want you to get hurt, she would appreciate the extra help. Especially since the two of you get along so well, she knows you would make a great team. She would want to make sure you’re prepared for anything first, and would insist you rigorously train with her in her studio before she thinks you’re ready to hit the streets with her.
Frank Castle
Tumblr media
Frank wouldn’t take you seriously, but once he realized you were being serious, he would immediately turn you down. His particular line of vigilante work is too dangerous for you, he’d insist, and he’d think it would ruin you, and he doesn’t want that to happen. You’d have to work really hard to prove yourself to him before he’d reluctantly agree to bring you with him on one mission, and eventually let you tag along on more.
Matthew Murdock
Tumblr media
Matt, like Frank, would turn you down almost immediately. He’d be afraid that you’d get hurt, or get yourself into trouble with the wrong people, and he wants to protect you from those threats, not let you run straight into it. However, if you kept pestering him about it, Matt would reluctantly agree to let you tag along on some of his missions, but not before the two of you train together non-stop, and Matt won’t go easy on you in training.
Mercedes ‘Misty’ Knight
Tumblr media
Misty would appreciate your help, especially as a fellow detective, but she would have some reservations. She knows she’s involved in more dangerous  business, takes more dangerous cases than anyone else in the precinct, meaning she has more enemies and more targets on her back that you’ll also have by helping her. But after seeing your determination, Misty would let you on board, knowing you’ll be of great help to her.

REASONS WHY COLLEEN LOVES DANNY
Most importantly he respects everything about her - her boundaries, decisions, opinions
even in an argument
he makes her happy like no one she’s ever met
he’s always aiming to make their relationship better
he brought adventure to her life
the literal sunshine in her life
he doesn’t hold grudges
he makes tea for them every morning without a thought
their mid-afternoon calls when she’s busy and doesn’t have time for anything but she makes time to listen to the run down off his day so far
his offer to bring her favorite for lunch
he wants to take away all her pain
the smile he gives her after he’s done kissing her
the way he kisses the top of her head
his smell
he challenges her to be better - whether it’s deliberate or coincidental
sparring sessions
he would kill/die for her
his innocence!!
the way his face lights up hen she walks into the room
he puts the water on her nightstand when she forgets so it’ll be there when she wakes
he’s saved her life
he gave her the Iron Fist, his everything, confessing to her that he would give it all up just for her
the way he strokes her face so delicately
date/ movie nights
he always lets her have the last piece
making dinner together
“I love you Colleen, always”

Tell Her You Love Her
Matt Murdock x fem!reader
Word Count: 2.5k
Warnings: grief, season 3 spoilers, injuries,
Author’s Note: how many times can maya write the same idea? Who knows! All i know is the next time is gonna be smutty idc. Something about these recent matt fics have been giving me peace.
Summary: Colleen calls you to help with how Danny is dealing with Matt’s final words. Just before Matt comes back from the dead.
Song: State of Grace (Acoustic Version) (Taylor’s Version) by Taylor Swift
I don’t own these characters. They belong to author/director/creator
(not my gif)
Tumblr media
You wrapped your jacket closer to yourself, shivering in the cold. Hell’s Kitchen was always cold at night. If Matt were here, he would tell you not to walk at night at all. The thought sent a deep sadness into your chest. It was almost like you were trying to defy him, trying to get him to come back and yell at you. You shut your eyes hard, not slowing your walk.
Stop thinking about Matt.
Matt’s dead.
Regardless, you walked up to his apartment and stepped up the stairs. You unlocked the door with the key he had given you and shut it behind you. You didn’t bother turning on the lights. You liked it dark sometimes, trying to imagine how he felt in it. It made you feel closer to him.
You put your bag down and walked further in. You looked down at the bills you had just grabbed, flipping through them.
You and Matt had talked about moving in together before he died but then things got more and more dangerous. He wouldn’t let you get any closer, in fear you would get hurt. But the day he died you ended your lease and moved into his apartment. You didn’t want it to go to anyone else.
You took off your jacket and slipped off your shoes. Shower. Then sleep.
You repeated that to yourself in your head a couple of times before your phone rang. You let out an annoyed groan and picked it up, not even bothering to look at the ID.
“Hello,” you spoke, surprised at how loud your voice was.
“Hey, is this Y/N?”
“It is, who’s this?” “Colleen Wing. We met, briefly, back when Matt was fighting with my boyfriend Danny.” You nodded to yourself, remembering her face. She was nice. Badass. Helpful.
“Yeah, Colleen. Long time, how are you guys? I keep meaning to call Danny but..life,” you muttered. She cleared her throat and you imagined her scratching the back of her neck. How does one talk to someone who lost their boyfriend?
“We’re good. Well, I’m okay. This was probably stupid actually, I’m sorry-”
“No, no go ahead. What’s wrong with Danny?” She took a deep breath.
“He’s always been a bit much you know but ever since that fight with everyone...he’s been going at it extra hard.” You nodded. You leaned against the window, looking out through the murky glass. “I think it’s because Matt told him to protect his city. I don’t know why I called you. I guess I..”
“You want me to tell him what Matt would have wanted. Get him to back down a bit.”
“Yeah. Now you get why I shouldn’t have called.” You shook your head, looking down at your feet.
“No, I think you called just the right person. You guys are living at the karate place now? Can I stop by tomorrow?”
“That would be great. Thank you. Thank you so much.” You hung up the phone and leaned against the cool window.
===
“Come in,” Colleen said, ushering you inside. You looked around. They had really cleaned the place up, made it a home. You wrapped your arms around yourself, trying to hold yourself together. You had convinced yourself you had needed to come in person to have this conversation but you were now slightly regretting it.
“Your place looks wonderful,” you said honestly. She smiled, walking past you to the small kitchen.
“Thanks. Danny and I did it together. Danny!” Danny came walking around the corner swiftly but stopped when he noticed you. You smiled weakly.
“What are you doing here?” he asked happily. He wrapped his arms around you and you hugged him back, laughing in surprise gently.
“I was in the neighborhood.” Danny pulled away and looked to Colleen.
“Did she call you?”
“She may have,” you admitted. He nodded slowly.
“I’m fine, I promise. I’m sorry you came all this way. Do you want some tea?” You shook your head.
“No thank you. I wanted to come. I haven’t seen either of you since...all of that.” He nodded and walked behind the counter to where Colleen was. He put his hand on the small of her back. “I don’t know all the details of what’s going on but I can say, objectively, you’re not alone out there Danny.” You leaned against the counter.
“Matt and I are di-”
“I don’t think you’re that different. I see a lot of his annoying traits in you.” Danny rolled his eyes, laughing dryly. “Like how you just go head first in, not caring about how that’s going to affect Colleen. It’s always act first, think later right?” Danny was silent. “Listen I came down here to tell you, Matt wouldn’t want you to strain yourself. Stay safe. Get shit done but stay safe.” There you had done it.
Danny nodded.
“I’ll try. I have to run, I have work but it was nice seeing you.” You gave him a thin smile and grabbed his arm as he tried to walk past you.
“I’m serious Rand.”
“I know. Thank you for coming.”
He walked past you. You turned to Colleen. You knew what emotions she was going through. A part of you didn’t envy her worry. A part of you would give anything to worry like that again.
“It was worth a shot,” she muttered. “Thank you for coming.”
“Of course. I enjoyed getting the air.” You pushed yourself off the side of the counter and backed up a bit.
“Are you sure you don’t want some tea?”
“I’m okay, I should run.” You started to walk to the door. “Colleen?”
“Yeah?”
“Stay with him. He’ll move really really fast and eventually he’ll get to the point where he won’t want you involved for your own safety. Push anyway. You won’t regret it.” She nodded softly.
“I’m sorry about Matt,” she said. You looked away from her, blinking the tears from your eyes.
“Me too.”
===
You sat on the couch, holding a cup of coffee in your hand. You flipped through a book, the only noise in the room being the noises of the city and your voice.
“I’m sure Marci will be fine,” you said into the phone, putting your book down.
“I hate that I have to ask you about this,” Foggy said.
“I still think you should date Karen. I like her more than I like Marci.”
“You are impossible sometimes you know that?” You smiled a bit and shrugged.
“What can I say, Foggy bear.”
“I’m hanging up the phone.” You laughed gently but paused. The door knob was turning. Foggy heard your laughter cut off and did not, in fact, hang up the phone. “What?”
“Someones trying to get in,” you whispered.
“What?”
“It could just be the landlord, I didn’t take Matt’s name off the deed,” you whispered. You got up and tried to lightly walk on the hardwood floor.
“Grab a knife. It could be one of Matt’s old enemies.”
“They should know by now. Daredevils dead.” You looked out the peephole but didn’t see anyone. You opened the door and a man fell onto the ground. He had a black scarf over his head and he was wearing an all black outfit. You stumbled back.
“Well? Who is it?” Foggy asked on the phone but you had dropped the phone.
“I didn’t think you were gonna be here,” Matt muttered, looking up at you from where he was laying on the floor.
“You heard my voice from downstairs I’m sure,” you breathed. “It didn’t stop you.” “I was already on my way.” You picked up the phone and put it to your ear.
“I’ll call you back Fog.” You hung up and pocketed the phone. You kneeled down, not touching him. He was breathing heavily, facing the ceiling, hand on his chest. Even in the darkness of the apartment, you could see his dried sticky blood.
You slowly reached your hand out and your fingers touched his arm. He was real. He was here, right now, with you.
“Say something,” he said.
“I’m gonna fucking kill you.” You hit his arm but didn’t put much effort into it. “I’m gonna murder you and put your six feet under the ground. I’m gonna kill you. I’m gonna kill you. I’m gonna…” your voice sizzled out into a cry. You put your hands gingerly on his arm. “Matty where have you been?”
He sat up, reaching out and grabbing your hand with his. It made you sob. He was there! He was alive!
“I was gonna do something much more theatrical. Crash through a window.”
“You would’ve paid for it you fucking asshole.” He laughed dryly at your attempt to make fun of him.
“I didn’t want to do this but I need something,” he said.
“Yeah?”
“I need an article from Karen and information from Foggy. They don’t know yet, I’m going there next.” You looked at him and pulled the scarf up off his face. His eyes. You never thought you would see them again.
“What do you want from me?” “I could use a kiss.” You laughed dryly and put your forehead on his shoulder, tears streaming down your face. He was laughing too. It was the most beautiful sound in the world.
“Are you serious?”
“No, no. I need someone to stitch me up and I didn’t feel like going back to the church.”
“You were in a church this whole time? Fuck I should have gone to every single church and checked. I thought about it. But you were very dead and I thought that was slightly pathe-”
“I missed you. I’m in danger. I shouldn’t be here. I missed you so much.”
You put your hand on his cheek, your thumb trailing to his lip. You outlined the bottom of it, taking in every single detail.
“That’s a lot of things,” you whispered, barely audible. You stared at him and gently, slowly, you moved forward to kiss him. It was like the clouds had parted. Like your very own personal Christmas morning.
When you pulled away you couldn’t think of a thing to say that would give this moment justice. You just were there, your fingers on his stubble. You couldn’t quite do anything but appreciate the feel of him underneath you.
You both sat just in front of the door of his apartment, simple bodies holding so many emotions.
Your phone rang. You picked it up, putting it to your ear.
“Are you alive?!” Foggy yelled into your ear. You chuckled lowly, your laughter mixing with Matt’s. Matt put his forehead on your shoulder. You put your hand up on the nape of his neck, massaging his skin.
“Yeah I’m okay Foggy.”
“Who the hell was it?”
“The landlord. I used the dead boyfriend card and he left me alone. Sorry I had to let you go so quickly.” You could hear a sigh of relief on the other end of the call.
“Jesus, don’t do that. I thought one of Matt’s old enemies had you hostage. Wait, how do I know for sure you aren’t being held hostage? Give me a sign.”
“I’m not being held hostage.”
“That doesn’t prove anything. I’m coming over.”
“No!” Matt sat up straight. “No. I’m going to sleep, I’m exhausted. I’m alright, I promise. I promise on Matt’s crumpled ashes.”
“You love to use that card.”
“Yeah well. I’ll talk to you later Foggy. Tell Marci I said hello.” You hung up the phone.
“Oh good God, he and Marci are dating again?” Matt questioned.
You’re one to talk. You were dead ten minutes ago.” He nodded.
“I will apologize for that for the rest of our lives but right now I think I need some gauze and a band aid.”
“Yes sir.”
====
Matt faced the window, ear to the noises of the city. You washed his blood off your hands.
“Danny Rand has been working very hard to keep your city safe,” you told him. “Not hard enough,” Matt muttered. You walked over to him. He extended his arms and took you in. You wrapped your arms around his waist. “I’m still so mad at you.”
“I know.”
“I might strangle you in your sleep.”
“I’ll deserve it.” He put his chin on your head. You stood, only illuminated by the moonlight. “This was selfish,” he whispered. “Being here.”
“I think you deserve to be a little selfish.” Your phone rang. Matt laughed.
“You are very popular.”
“Let it go to voicemail.”
“No. I like to eavesdrop.” You rolled your eyes and put the phone to your ear.
“Hello?”
“Y/N hey,” Danny said into your ear. “I wanted to apologize for earlier. I’ve been thinking about what you said. You’re right. I’ve been trying so hard to keep it together I didn’t even think about what leaving Colleen would do to her.” He paused. “She’s strong but my death would hurt her.” Matt rubbed your back.
“I’m happy to hear that.” You paused. “Tell her you love her.”
“I do. Every day. And for what it’s worth...Matt loved you. A lot. Like enough for a building to fall on him.” You smiled.
“I know.” You hung up and tossed your phone on the couch. “How was the eavesdropping?” You looked up at Matt.
“Danny’s right.” He paused. “And I’m sorry.”
“I won’t get tired of hearing that.”
“I know you won’t.”
“Let’s go to sleep. You look like you need a good eight hours. Or twenty four.”
Matt had a lot to think about. Fisk breaking out of prison, the FBI, getting Karen to write the article, getting information from Foggy, etc etc. But for a moment, he just agreed.
“I’m gonna let you lead me to bed. It’s been a while since I was in here, I might run into something. Did you redecorate?” You giggled and grabbed his hand, leading him to bed.
“Nothing is unmoved except for those hideous counters.”
“Oh you wanted me dead so you could do that.” “No comment.”

X-Men Abridged: 1979
The X-Men, those globe-trotting mutants that have sworn to protect a world that hates and fears them, are a cultural juggernaut with a long, tangled history. Want to unravel this tapestry? Then read the Abridged X-Men!
(X-Men 117 - 128, X-Man Annual 3) - by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, Terry Austin, George Perez
Tumblr media
See Jean? Dark Phoenix is nothing: this is how you turn evil properly. (X-Men 123)
So, these things have been getting longer. Whoops.
Last year, plotlines tended to bleed over in one another, but this year is a lot more arc-based, jumping from location to location. This is basically X-Men: World Tour. After hitting Antarctica and the Savage Land, our team of merry mutants visits Japan, Canada, Egypt, Scotland and even a theme park! (And really, both Murder World and Disney Land are run by capitalist scumbags who pretend to be in it for the art, the only difference being that Arcade purposefully murders his guests.)
But, before we check in with the X-Men, we return to the Institute. See, there’s a mutual misunderstanding that wouldn’t be out of place in a Shakespearian tragedy: Jean and Charles think Beast and Jean were the only survivors of their fight with Magneto in Antarctica, while the rest of the X-Men believe they were the only survivors and Jean and Beast perished. Since the X-Men have been trapped in the Savage Land, nobody has been able to clear up the confusion.
With their grief driving a wedge between her and Charles, Jean leaves the mansion to deal with her feelings on her own. (She’ll end up on Muir Isle.)
Tumblr media
This is adorable! And, if the whole "Empress of the known Universe "-thing blows up in her face, she can always become a barista at Starbucks. (X-Men 117)
Lilandra successfully persuades Xavier to leave Earth as her consort, now that there is nothing left for him. Xavier agrees, but not before having a flashback to the time he met another telepath named Amahl Farouk in Egypt. (The Shadow King isn’t relevant just yet, but he’ll become an important villain later on.)
The X-Men, meanwhile, cross a treacherous ocean on a raft and are picked up by a Japanese vessel. The Japanese do not allow them to call anyone, for some reason. Sure. When they finally dock in Japan - six weeks later - some arms dealer named Magnum Moses has put Agarishima is on fire. Like, literally an inferno of such big proportions that even Storm can’t do much.
What follows is an uninspired, slipshod adventure. For some reason, Misty Knight and Colleen Wing are there too, because the president needed American detectives to investigate Magnum Moses (?) and for some reason, Misty doesn’t know Jean thinks Scott is dead, nor does she mention she just saw Jean to Scott. AUGH. It will take almost a year for Scott to figure out Jean isn’t dead and it becomes increasingly more contrived. I get that Claremont needed to isolate Jean to make her susceptible to, er, a certain someone’s machinations, but holy fuck do I have to suspend my disbelief for all of this bullshit.
The only good things about this little arc are:
Sunfire is still a dick.
Wolverine meets Mariko Yashida, a Japanese girl who actually reciprocates his feelings, as opposed to Jean. I’ve mostly been ignoring his budding feelings for Jean, because I stopped finding love triangles interesting since I was 16 and watched The OC, so I can only applaud this development. Mariko brings out Wolverine’s soft side and it’s very adorable. Later on, she moves to NYC for some reason and they start dating.
Tumblr media
There is something sweetly disarming about calling Wolverine ‘beautiful’. (X-Men 120)
Anyway, Magnum is holding Japan hostage: either they give him what he wants - I think that might be money, sorry, wasn't paying attention - or he sinks Japan by activating the fault lines and you guys, I am sooo bored. Unsurprisingly, the X-Men stop him and for once, it’s Banshee who gets to play the most important part.
Tumblr media
It’s a good thing I was terrible at science, otherwise I might have to point out that earthquakes and sonic waves don’t work that way! I simply get to be entertained by little rascal Colossus, plugging his ears like a toddler, and Sunfire’s gritty determination to not be impressed by some silly screaming Irishman. (X-Men 119)
Banshee pays a steep price for the victory, however: his vocal chords end up damaged, leaving him effectively powerless for the remainder of the year.
Oh, and here’s interesting fact about the above spread: you may or may not know that Chris Claremont and John Byrne were notoriously terrible at working together; this issue became a particular sore point between the creators. See, Byrne wanted to run the above panel without the sound of ‘Kra-Koom’, believing the art was strong enough to convey the destruction. He was livid when the finished product ended up containing a sound effect after all. I get your frustration, man, but if you want a writer who knows how to say less with more, you should maybe not work with Claremont?
(One of the reasons Claremont liked being so verbose and descriptive in his scripts was because otherwise, the artist would fill in the blanks using his own imagination. It’s no wonder these two found it hard to work together.)
On the flight to the US of A, Colleen Wing hits on Cyclops. It has to be the jawline, right? It can’t be the personality. All of a sudden, a snow storm causes their plane to be diverted to Calgary. The cause of this delay is Alpha Flight, who want their Wolverine back!
Tumblr media
When even the narration is all “and they think they’re equal to any team of superheroes”, you know you’re a bunch of C-listers. Ugh. (X-Men 121)
Vindicator, previously known as Captain Alpha. He changed his name after accidentally shooting Moira that one time, which is exactly the kind of hollow gesture this dude would make. Ugh. If you think his new-found remorse won’t let him threaten an airplane chock full of innocent passengers, you would be wrong.
Shaman, doctor by day, magic user by night. Him and his magical little pouch are to blame for the snow storm.
Sasquatch, Canada’s answer to the Hulk. (Hilariously, the theory on why he turns furry instead of green is because he’s closer to the Aurora Borealis and this somehow messes with the radiation?)
Snowbird, a young Arctic goddess. Precious. To be cherished. Barely there for this adventure, sadly.
Northstar, an arrogant, hot-headed speedster, the twin brother of
Aurora, a lover, not a fighter. Together, they have light powers.
Vindicator and Shaman hog most of the spotlight, so Alpha Flight continues to be the ever-loving worst. They’re really wasting Northstar’s first appearance here. Here's why they suck:
Alpha Flight accidentally smashes a plane and keeps threatening to drag Wolverine back to the military against his will.
They push the cover price of the comic to a whoppin’ 40 cents.
Johnny fuckin’ Hudson even provokes Storm into an attack in the middle of a mall.
Shaman lets his blizzard get out of control.
After Storm fixes this mistake for him, Northstar has the gall to knock her out, “because she’s obviously the strongest”. Like, you’re not wrong, but damn, y’all a bunch of unpleasant superheroes.
To stop the fight, Wolverine decides to turn himself in. The X-Men leave, but while flying back, they already make plans to save their teammate. Wolverine saves them the trouble, casually sauntering into the cockpit while claiming that pulling a fast one on them was the easiest thing ever.
To be fair, I understand why you’d want to put a country between yourself and those bozos.
And finally, the X-Men are home! Xavier left them the equivalent of a Post-It saying “off to space”, so they try to pick up their life as best they can. None of them contact Jean’s parents, make an attempt to visit her grave or happen to see Beast on TV and by now, my suspension of disbelief is stretched so far that it could replace Reed Richards on the Fantastic Four.
Ororo, meanwhile, makes a little pilgrimage to Harlem, to the building she grew up in before she moved to Cairo.
Tumblr media
I have failed you as a recapper, because I have absolutely no idea how to parse this scene. (X-Men 122)
I think I’d have to write a full-on thesis before I could properly analyse this, because so many things intersect here: poverty and racism, the boundaries of a superhero comic, confronting a (shared) past. I can’t even fully gauge if this is a clumsy, privileged attempt at tackling a serious topic or rather, a valuable moment in a comic that continually tries to expand on its themes of racism, exclusion and prejudice. One thing I will note is:
Luke Cage delivers the sort of trite conclusion that they’re superheroes: they’re better at fighting Galactus than at fixing the human condition. Point is, he kind of has to believe that, doesn’t he? It’s the sort of blind spot we all permit ourselves: you can’t fix everything. None of us have the power to fix the earth, or humanity, or the economy, or whatever: if you’re lucky, you can maybe tend to your own garden and leave it better than you found it, ensuring some happiness for yourself and a few loved ones.
Chasing bank robbers is easy. Superhero stuff. But here? Who do you attack here? These kids, or the system that failed them? You can’t really punch a needle exchange into being. Maybe that’s the appeal of superhero comics: there’s a clear villain, which is so sorely lacking in our day to day lifes. There, we are ruled by systems that are rooted in inequality, patriarchy, gender...
But Storm isn’t like Luke Cage, not in this regard. Before she became an X-Man, she used her powers to help people that came to her. And the whole point of the X-Men - other than beating up villains in colorful spandex - is that they want to change the system. They want to fix things, they want to fix a dark part of human nature, the part that hates which we fear.
Storm doesn’t really respond to Luke Cage here, but we know she’ll keep fighting the good fight, despite insurmountable odds. You can’t fix mankind, I don’t think, but you can sure as hell try.
*coughs*
Anyway!
Black Tom and Juggernaut hire Arcade… to kill the X-Men! I’m not sure why? I thought these two usually attempted to solve things on their own and Arcade’s fee is, like, a million bucks, so…? Maybe Black Tom asked his boyfriend what he wanted for his birthday and Juggernaut clenched his fists and said “I WANT THE X-MEN DEAD” and things escalated from there.
So, Arcade is a subtle villain. While Scott and Colleen Wing are on a date, this happens:
Tumblr media
I can’t decide which is funnier: kidnapping people by sneaking up on them with A GARBAGE TRUCK or the fact that Spider-Man deduces this is Arcade’s doing by the noise alone. (X-Men 123)
Spider-Man doesn’t really figure into the rest of the plot, by the way.
Arcade successfully kidnaps all of the X-Men (and their dates: Colleen, Amanda and Betsy). Who is this Arcade? Well, he is an assassin who lets his victims run through a gauntlet of some sort, testing them with potentially deadly results in his Murderworld. He’s like a discount-combo of Saw and the Joker, except a lot less competent and a lot more spoiled rich kid. He barely kills anyone, ever, until maaaybe Avengers Arena, some forty years later.
Tumblr media
Arcade veers heavily to the silly side of the silly-to-sinister scale, but he at least commits to a theme. Bonus is that trapping your heroes in a bunch of ricocheting balls fubars them ever-so beautifully. (X-Men 123)
This whole adventure is very silly and has very little bearing on the overarching plot, but it’s a fun enough romp: Cyclops nearly gets squashed by a hydraulic press, Nightcrawler gets attacked by bumper cars with chain saws attached to them, stuff like that. The absolute best part is when Colossus is hypnotized by an illusion of the KGB and becomes THE PROLETARIAN.
His insignia is Vladimir Lenin, y’all.
After various shenanigans, everybody is freed from their respective booby traps, everyone except Colossus. See, Piotr has been feeling down, torn between the exciting new loyalty to the X-Men and the more dutiful loyalty to his family and his motherland. (Also, he’s been feeling like a failure because he came up short a couple a times, aw.) Those feelings are exactly what Arcade has been abusing, but when Colossus comes in for the kill, Storm gives the most heartfelt plea:
Tumblr media
I’m not crying, you’re crying. (X-Men 124)
Arcade’s all: “Eh, can’t win ‘em all” and yeets the X-Men out of Murderworld. The story has barely any other repercussions, except we stop seeing Colleen Wing and Betsy (Piotr’s date) after this. To be fair, being kidnapped by a super villain is a good reason to stop seeing someone.
Even more inconsequential is the adventure in the Annual. The only important thing to glean from there is that, when Thor is unavailable, Storm is a suitable substitution. Couldn’t agree more.
The quality of the comic has been steadily ascending throughout the year and ends on a supremely high note: Proteus. Because I think it might be Claremont’s best work so far, I’ll be dedicating a full post to that. (Man, that 10-picture-limit is a real bummer, huh?)
Ugliest Costume: I don’t care, I just want someone to cosplay the Proletarian.
Best new character: There’s actually a few options - Snowbird, Northstar, Proteus - but both Jean-Paul and Narya don’t really show their best sides this year, so I’m going in a different direction. My pick is the Shadow King. He is a very effective foil to Xavier, perhaps even moreso than Magneto. I know I rag on Xavier and his cavalier attitude to bending others to his will a lot, but imagine if you had his powers: wouldn’t you just make people do whatever you want? Just, like, all the time? The Shadow King is an effective reminder of what Charles would have been like, had he been immoral. (Well, more immoral.)
Tumblr media
No matter how cool your psychic battle may be, this is what it looks like to the rest of the world. (X-Men 117)
Turns evil: Colossus, for the first time!
What to read: 117, 125 - 129.

JOCKEY (2021)
Starring Clifton Collins Jr., Molly Parker, Moises Arias, Logan Cormier, Colleen Hartnett, Daniel Adams, Vincent Francia, Marlon St. Julien, Danny Garcia, Ryan Barber, Martin Bourdieu, Aki Kato, Richard Lull, Scott Stevens, Carl 'The Truth' Williams       , Michael Ybarra, Joe Johnson, Daillon Luker,          Oscar Quiroz, John Shumaker, Willie Whitehouse, Stacey Nottingham, Bryce Donaldson and Colleen Hartnett.
Screenplay by Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar.
Directed by Clint Bentley.
Distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. 95 minutes. Rated R.
There is a certain amount of cosmic synergy in the fact that long-time character actor Clifton Collins Jr. may finally reach some level of stardom for playing the lead character in the melancholy drama Jockey.
After all, his character, Jackson Silva is an aging journeyman horseman who has been on the circuit for years. He’s reached some minor levels of success and occasional high points in his career, but mostly he’s had to scramble for a buck and to survive. Now, finally, the potential of a huge win is within his grasp, if only he can hang on to it and perform to the best of his abilities. Unfortunately, his body, which he has been neglecting for years, is starting to break down.
With the exception of the deteriorating body (I assume), it is pretty much a parallel story to Collins’ own acting career. He’s had occasional high points – playing killer Perry Smith in Capote and appearing in such acclaimed films as Babel and Sunshine Cleaning and having a substantial role on the HBO series Westworld. However, he’s rarely had the opportunity to carry a film, and in recent years he’s worked steadily, but mostly in small roles in barely noticed films. (Other than Jockey, his 2021 output included After Yang, Breaking News in Yuba County and a bit part in the critically acclaimed Nightmare Alley.)
And now he has the opportunity for that big winner which has eluded him for so long.
On the plus side, Jockey is a triumph for him, the type of lived-experience performance which will make award nomination committees stand up and take notice. (He’s got almost no shot to win Best Actor, but I’d be shocked if he isn’t at least nominated.) On the negative, Jockey is a bit too morose and cynical to become anything other than a cult arthouse favorite. Which is fine, it was never expected to be anything else, I imagine.
Plus, it is a film about the sport of horse racing in which barely any actual racing is shown. And yet, it exudes a bittersweet elegiac quality which is surprisingly effective.
Jockey tells the story of an older man who is nearly at the end of his career ride, and yet he wants to stay in the saddle a bit longer. At the very moment that he is handed what may very well be his last chance for the gold ring, a young man enters his life. Gabriel (Moises Arias) is a groom and aspiring jockey – and he may just be Jackson’s son from a long-ago relationship. Jackson must decide whether to take the youngster under his wing or to save him from the life which has been so hard and often disappointing – and yet addictive to Jackson – before he is also pulled down the rabbit hole.
Jockey does not sugarcoat the world of horseracing. It shows it as a physically and emotionally taxing lifestyle in which the few victories are mitigated by a constant barrage of defeats. It is a dirty, sordid way of life which breaks more people than it creates. Yet it is fascinating for the hold it has on them.
Jockey is visually poetic – it almost feels like a long-lost Terrence Mallick film – at the same time it is often emotionally devastating. And riding on Collins’ hard-earned performance, it deserves its time in the winner’s circle.
