'For now, they had a plan, hoping it could bring a smile to your face.' ;
Coming home to his daughter's hugs had become an everyday thing if Rick didn't have to work overtime, but if the flicker of sadness in her eyes was anything to go by, something had to have happened while he was away.
“Mrs Bedford was saying bad stuff to mama while we were at the park.”
It was the same thing she told her brothers when they got home from school, and just like them, it was enough for Rick to get the whole picture.
Ah, Mrs Bedford. Or as the neighbourhood youngsters, children and teenagers alike, like to call her 'the modern witch of the road', and not in the cool way. Her husband was no better, always bugging you at any given opportunity. The worst part was Mrs Bedford always antagonized you for it, even if she knew you didn’t entertain her husband’s behaviour. It was also extremely hypocritical of her, considering she herself has tried to make her move on Rick. A lot. Only to be met with disappointment each time.
Her children were just as bad, too, to put it lightly.
“What did she say?” It was the green light Irene needed before she explained what had happened to a T, courtesy of her father’s eagle eye. Unlike most days, it was just you and Irene visiting the park since your sons had football practice.
The two of you were feeding the ducks when Mrs Bedford came up to you.
“You on your own?” Was the first thing she asked you before you questionably said ‘yes’, despite Irene being there too, and the little girl realized Mrs Bedford wouldn’t have gone off on a tangent about you and your ‘possibly tainted history’ if her father or brothers were around in the first place.
“I don’t know what you did but I can see it in your eyes, Flag. You’re no saint. You can fool the others with your little flower shop and your so-called angelic kids, but not me.”
Though Mrs Bedford knew nothing about your powers or your time in Belle Reve, instead, spewing hate out of jealousy and hatred for you for being the favourable neighbour, she wasn’t completely wrong. You have hurt people, you’ve even killed some, but they were for the greater good. Since your freedom from hell on earth, you’ve barely used your umbrakineses. It wasn’t until the birth of your children, to which all three of them gained your abilities did you realized you couldn’t run from who you really were—it wasn’t right nor fair to them.
Then, telling them your story as a criminal and how their dad was once your enemy was another thing. You weren’t sure what reaction you were expecting, but it was certainly not amazement and sparkles in their eyes. As they grew older, they began to make sense of how their parents somehow knew people like Aunt Harley, Uncle Robert and hell, even Nanaue.
And at that point in time, Mrs Bedford reminded you of Waller, turning you into submission as you could do nothing but listen to her make a mockery out of you for turning over a new leaf. Irene had to watch your face drop as the woman insulted you, and she knew she had to tell her family about it.
Irene insisted that she was fine about heading home early, even if you tried to convince her otherwise. She wanted nothing more than to do something about that glazed look in your eyes.
As soon as you stepped foot into the living room, a tear rolled down your cheek. You couldn't help but apologize to her, to everyone if they were with you then. You weren’t entirely sure if it was because you seemed weak over a bunch of words or their fate of ending up with you as the wife and a mother of their family.
Irene shook her head, hugging you with her face in your tummy.
"You're not a mean person, mama. You're the nicest and coolest mama we could ever ask for, and we love you."
It was simple, something you've heard of thousands of times in your lifetime, but you very much needed it today.
Ever the sweet girl, she accompanied you as you lay in your bed, telling you random stories about what she painted during art class or what she ate at lunch, anything but the time Mrs Bedford’s son, Kyle pushed her off the swing while his older brother, Blake laughed and praised him for doing so. You didn’t need to know that.
Not yet.
You listened with a warm smile, embarrassed but nonetheless thankful for how observant she was of your feelings before eventually dozing off.
Irene was careful yet quick to jump off the bed, running downstairs to shush Richie and Ethan as they returned home.
The more she explained, the brighter their eyes unnaturally glowed. Richie was starting to look like their father as he crossed his arms, listening to her like a police officer, while Ethan seemed like he was already thinking of ways to counter the Bedford’s undignified acts.
Basically, the Bedfords were not the greatest people. Each and every one of them.
Though they had a myriad of ideas, they weren’t sure how much their father would appreciate it, even if it was for your sake. Still, they thanked Irene for being there for you, promising that something would be done, no matter what it would be.
For now, they had a plan, hoping it could bring a smile to your face.
After an unexpected nap, you came down to find your kids huddled on the couch, whispering and hushing each other. Curious, you approached them.
Ethan was the first to notice you, offering you a grin before showing you what was in their hands, “Look, ma, I think we got it.”
You leaned in to take a closer look, only for your breath to hitch at the sight of life on their palms. There, they showed you the differing mass of shadows they conjured, a tougher one you just taught them about a week ago. You have always loved this trick as a kid, and it only aided your sanity when you were by your lonesome in the penitentiary. In a way, you were replacing what life truly was by making your own, even if they were temporary because there was no telling when or if you’d ever be free.
Yet, here they were, prompting joy and pride as they held the wispy animals of their choice; Richie with what seemed to be an adorable little puppy, Ethan creatively emulated a bioluminescent jellyfish and Irene…
Oh, Irene.
She scarcely remembered how much you loved making her laugh by conjuring butterflies when she was still very little if not for the twins confirming it.
The butterfly was as small as her hand, but the wings were majestic, idly flapping before flying over to you, leaving cloudy black trails and landing on your outstretched finger.
You stared at their creations ever so lovingly, already on the brink of tears. You were just as mad at yourself for doubting your worth, and your potential, just because of the things you had to do in the past, for the sake of the person you were now.
You embraced Irene in a tight hug before pulling your boys in as well. You sniffled, absolutely joyous and blessed to be surrounded by the most loving people. Nothing could deter you from this, not even as the shadow puppy yipped and chased the jellyfish and butterfly in excitement. Your cat, Tofu, must’ve heard the commotion, too, as she came from the kitchen to check, only to be frightened and jump on the couch with you as the puppy came running to her.
Rick finally arrived about two hours later, coming home to hear laughter before he saw Irene running across the room, followed by Tofu and the shadow puppy in tow. The jellyfish laid on Richie’s head like a nest whereas the butterfly decided to make Ethan’s shoulder its home as they hung out with you on the couch.
“Daddy!” Irene greeted him before running over to him. He didn’t question the questioning look she gave him just yet and instead, hoisted her up, laughing as Tofu and the puppy pawed at his bootlaces.
“What’s going on here?” He raised his brows, amused by what could be described as a fever dream of a sight.
“The kids learnt how to make little lives.” You giggled, allowing Rick to sit next to you as you scooted over.
“And I got a new hat,” Richie gestured to the jellyfish, who he has now dubbed as Jelly. As if it understood, Jelly immediately floated away, leaving Richie’s hair flattened, “Never mind.”
You shared a laugh as he deadpanned before you turned to Rick, “Was work okay?”
“Yeah, the usual. Decorated the place today, actually.” He took his phone out of his pocket, opening his gallery and showing you and the kids the spookily tacky decor that furnished his workplace.
“Did you really paint ‘dead inside, don’t open’ on the entrance door?” The twins gawked.
“Fitting, ain't it?” Rick joked, prompting smiles and chuckles from you once more before falling back on the couch, “But at least I’m off tomorrow, so I was thinking we could eat out for dinner.”
“Oh! We should head to Pop’s since they’re also offering their apple betty.” Ethan suggested.
“Well, I think that’s a good idea, so,” Richie trailed off, raising anticipation from the rest of you before jumping off the couch and running up the stairs. Ethan and Irene simultaneously gasped before the former took his sister out of Rick’s arms to chase their brother together. You and Rick could only watch with delight as Tofu and the shadow creatures followed them too.
“Everything okay?” He wanted to know, but he wouldn’t pry if you weren’t ready to tell him.
“Yeah,” You nodded, gazing down for a moment before continuing, “Something happened earlier but…”
“Richie! You better not lock the door or I swear to God!” Ethan’s voice rang out from upstairs, followed by Irene’s ‘language!’, and you couldn’t help but shake your head in amusement.
“It’s all good now.” You reassured him. You knew you could’ve told him, but it wasn’t worth dwelling on. You had children to nurture and a husband to take on the world with.
“The Bedfords?” He guessed. If it wasn’t them, then it had to be Mr Walker.
“The Bedfords,” You confirmed with a tight smile, “I’m just more upset that Irene was there to hear it.”
You didn’t explain any further and Rick took it as a sign to drop it. If they were able to make you this upset, then it was best to ask the kids instead.
“I’m sorry,” He pulled you to his chest, planting a slow and gentle kiss on your forehead. He rubbed your back, sighing at the very mention of that family. Rick loathed that they were influential enough to be one of the higher-ups of the school’s PTA, though he was confident that money was involved in it too. He hated that they were reasons why you’d come home ranting about how Mrs Bedford bugged you again, or when he had to make sure Mr Bedford knew he was making a promise and not an empty threat whenever it involved their kids and his, "You know I can talk to them."
It would do no good, but it was worth trying.
"No, you know how the Bedfords are. Don’t worry, okay? Not now,” You kissed the inside of his palm before pressing your lips against his, soft, sensual and safe. Rick moved forward, deepening the kiss as held the nape of your neck. You pulled away but not before nuzzling his nose, “We should be celebrating.”
He nodded, though he knew it would only linger in his mind for a while. Still, he adhered to your wishes, standing up before offering you his hand to get ready, “Right, right. Shall we?”
You snorted, placing your hand in his the way a princess would when a prince asks for a dance. Unexpectedly, he twirled you around, wrapping his arms around you he pulled you in, chest to chest. You playfully smacked him, though it did very little to wipe off the pleased look on his face as the two of you headed to your room.
Tumblr media
You and the boys were the first to head out to the front yard, chatting and evaluating the decors of the houses while waiting for Rick and Irene.
“What happened today?” He asked his daughter quietly as they stood at the front door, helping with her shoes while she slid on a jacket.
“Mrs Bedford was saying bad stuff to mama while we were at the park.” She whispered back, swinging her arms as she watched her father tie her shoelace, “Like, really mean stuff. No one was around except us so she was kinda loud, too.”
Rick fumed, clenching his jaw as he could already hear and picture whatever nonsense she loved to spit out.
“Mama got kinda quiet when we came home, and then she started crying. About how she’s sorry she was a criminal and how we’re ‘stuck’ with her powers.” She added. If anything, she and the boys thought your abilities were the coolest thing to have ever happened to them.
He shook his head—who wouldn't crack after being subjected to their ways for so long? He hummed, hiding the seething resentment by ruffling Irene's hair.
"Can you help me distract your mother while I talk to the boys for a bit?" She nodded diligently, skipping over to you before Rick called out to his sons, "Need some help, boys."
They rushed over, glancing at you before Ethan spoke up first, "She told you?"
"Yeah." Rick replied as he locked the door.
"Can't we do something about it?" Richie asked with a frown.
"You boys are not punching Blake again." Rick reminded them with a small smile.
"You didn't seem to mind it," Ethan mirrored his father's amusement, "He was yelling at our teammate and encouraged his troll brother to push Irene off a swing."
"I'm mad, too," Rick was more than mad, but he couldn't let his emotions run wild, "Look, we'll think of something, alright? For now, just make sure she's happy."
That's all they ever wanted.
The drive to Pop's was a lively one, and so was the dinner itself. Though you knew you'd be thinking about Mrs Bedford's words every once in a while, the smiles and laughter of your family were already a welcoming distraction as it is.
Tumblr media
Midnight rolled around, and everyone had returned to their rooms with sore cheeks and a full stomach. You were the first to slip under the covers after a shower, hoping you wouldn't be too tired as you waited for Rick, though it didn't work.
By the time Rick got out of the bathroom, you were peacefully asleep, your face just a breath away from your husband's pillow as his scent soothed you like no other.
Rick smiled to himself, changing into his PJs before sitting on your side of the bed. The dip roused you from your slumber just a little.
"Rick?" You murmured, fluttering your lashes tiredly.
"Forgot to get some water," He caressed your cheek before bending down to kiss it, "I'll be back."
You mustered a closed-eye smile and before you knew it, you drifted off once again, lulled by the way he patted your back.
Once the coast was clear, he moved off the bed, silently slipping out and closing the door before heading over to the twins' room. He knocked on the door, just enough for them to hear before doing the same with Irene's door and headed downstairs.
Rick sat down at the dining table with a glass of cold water, arms crossed and lost in his own thoughts before hearing light footsteps approaching.
Richie, Ethan and Irene carefully pulled their chairs back before taking a seat, and just like that, the discussion began.
But it didn't seem like they were getting anywhere and at some point, they just started shit-talking.
"Man, I wish coach would just kick Blake out." Ethan groaned, his head falling back.
"Tell me about it. He's shit at quarterback." Richie clicked his tongue.
"Boys." Rick warned them, partially because his youngest was listening.
"Sorry." They apologized but Irene didn't seem to mind.
"How about…" She chimed in, tapping her finger on her chin, "We scare them?"
"Like…?" Richie cocked his head, hoping she'd say more than just that.
"I don't know, I just thought it'd be cool since it's Halloween and stuff. And, well, maybe we could use our powers, but I know mama and daddy wouldn't want that." She shrugged, pouting because she hadn't thought it far enough.
"It would be a miracle to scare them without using our powers in the first place," Richie sighed, looking over to his father, "What do you think, dad?"
No reply.
"Dad?" Ethan followed suit as the three of them raised their brows.
“How far are you in your shadow puppet practice?” Rick asked out of the blue, staring ahead as though imagining whatever idea he had played out.
“Uh, pretty far, I think? Ma taught us how to merge our shadows into one if we wanted to make a bigger animal.” Richie answered, earning affirmative nods from his siblings.
“How big?”
“Like, this big!” Irene opened her arms wide to let him know just how big of a monster they would be able to make if they wanted to. They haven’t, there was no reason to, but the more their father asked, the more it piqued their interest.
Rick thought it through for a moment. It has been a while since he has seen you make that one particular lifeform, but it was worth a shot. If it were able to render Waller speechless, then it’ll definitely make the Bedfords piss their pants.
No actual attacks, and definitely no killings. But he’ll make sure they shudder at the mere thought of Halloween. Put the fear of God in them. They had it coming, too, stomping on other neighbours’ happiness for years just for the fun of it.
He just had to play it safe.
He slowly broke into a sinister smile.
“You three ever heard of a hellhound?”

Rick Flag x Reader
Plot: You were always at odds with a certain Colonel. Will Christmas change things?
Genre: PG-13, Colleagues/Neighbors/Enemies to Lovers (wow so many tropes in one haha) Christmas theme (again)
A/N: Big thanks to @the-slumberparty for letting me not forget my writing roots in times of writer’s slump/block! 2nd piece for sleepover event to hopefully end the year right. Enjoy and please reblog/comment!❤️
Tumblr media
Prompt: “I never hated you. I just didn’t want you to know how much I liked you.”
***
“Motherfu-”
You yell in pain as the infirmary doctor at Belle Reve patches up your injuries. “Sorry, I wasn’t-”
The doctor waves away your apology nonchalantly. He brushes a strand of grey hair off his face before applying more iodine to the angry looking flesh on your knee. Hats off to him, he does quick and efficient work. The doctor sends you on your way with a month’s worth of painkillers and advice to rest.
“Thanks doc, but I don’t think that’s in Waller’s dictionary. At least not for us.”
He doesn’t refute your statement and simply prepares to see his next patient. Bag of medicine in hand, you limp to the office as quickly as you can. You want to get out of the penitentiary and lay in the comfort of your own bed.
You acknowledge Emilia and John who congratulate you on another successful mission. Even Amanda Waller, who you had to submit your report to despite being on the brink of death gives a subtle nod to the quick thinking that you displayed on the field. But knowing her, she probably was just happy that she could continue using her soldiers.
Including the ridiculously handsome Colonel who had marched into the shared office space, not sparing you a glance. He shoves his belongings into his bag and he is gone as quickly as he came.
You frown. You have no idea what’s his problem. Ever since your first day, it felt as if like he’s had it out for you. And the best part? For no good reason. He was civil with everyone. Everyone but you. He was downright rude and a jerk.
Emilia gives you an empathetic smile. The two of you leaned on each other, being one of the few females in an environment that wasn’t exactly sunshine and rainbows. She comforted you after Rick blew your head off for almost ruining the mission when all you did was to rescue two innocent children in the crossfire.
“Cheer up! At least it’ll be Christmas soon. Things will be different.” She says. “Any plans?”
You shake your head. “Not that I can think of. I’m just lucky that I survived this mission.” You sling your bag over your shoulder and bid them goodbye. Emilia was right, at least it was that time of the year. Maybe things will be different.
***
It looks like the doctor had clearly outdone himself. Your injuries were healing nicely and you could even step outside your house for a jog. Dressed in your running gear, you leave your apartment and step into the pleasantly cold weather.
Making your way round the block, you arrive back at your apartment. You think about what you wanted to do next with the treasured free time that you have. Perhaps you’ll order in from that Korean restaurant, pull out a Disney movie and be a couch potato for the rest of the day.
Yeah, that sounded excellent.
Deep in thought about what you should pick from the menu, you don’t notice that one of the stitches from your more severe wounds snap, causing a patch of red to blossom at the side of your stomach. The lift dings, signaling that this is your floor. Thank god no one saw you. They knew who you were but most of your neighbors were under the impression that you were an outdoor educator.
Clutching the side of your stomach, you willed yourself to take the steps forward needed to get to your door. Easy does it, you think. Unfortunately, your vision starts to spot and the floor starts to shake. This unnerves your usually calm demeanor as your breathing quickens. As if it was an eternity, you reach the door. All you needed to do was to get the keys, unlock the door and-
And…
***
You blink, shifting uncomfortably on the sofa. To be exact, your sofa.
How did you get inside? You can’t remember anything after the jog.
“You’re awake.” A familiar voice can be heard and a flop of messy blonde hair comes into vision. You don’t know how Rick Flag got into your house, let alone knew that you lived here.
“Rick?”
“Yeah, it’s me darlin.”
The name somehow wakes you up and you attempt to sit upright only for Rick to gently push you back down. “I just did your stitches for you. You don’t want to burst them again.” He tells you and your cheeks heat up. Rick did your stitches, which means he saw you- Stop it!
“How did you know where I lived? How did you even know I was coming back home?” You focus your attention on the important moments. “Are you stalking me? I could sue you for workplace harassment.”
Rick lets out a deep chuckle that has butterflies bursting in the pit of your stomach. “Yeah, you do that. Though I don’t think there’s any issue with me coming to this building seeing as it’s my home too.”
You let yourself process this. “Wait… you’re the neighbor from five-oh-two?” You wanted to mentally slap yourself in the face. No wonder Mrs Jenkins told you that neighbor five-oh-two was supposedly a private contractor. That he had weird, odd hours. That apparently you should have met him since you and him leave around the same time in the morning for work.
Rick smiles. “That’s me.”
You almost let your defenses down until you realized that it’s been eight months since you moved in here and you’ve met everyone on your level except one. Until now.
This reaffirms the fact that Rick Flag hates you for no good reason and has wants nothing to do with you outside work. Even if he is your neighbor. Fine. Two people can play that game.
“Thanks for fixing me up. I’m not sure why the stitch burst open but I’ll let Doctor Shaw know when I get back to work.”
Rick catches on to your sudden frostiness. His expression softens for a moment before it is replaced by the brooding look that you have grown so accustomed to. “Sure. Uh… have a good Christmas.”
That was oddly civil.
You nod stiffly, closing the door as he steps out your house.
You really need a glass of water.
***
Christmas. The time of jolly good cheer.
You walk down the shops that are adorned with bright lights and Christmas decorations, mood improving significantly.
Okay, the steak that you had for dinner also played a part in the great day that you had. You also decided to treat yourself, purchasing a lovely sweater. Bag in hand, you continue down the pavement. If only every day could be like this. Not throwing yourself into life or death situations, not having criminals as your field members, not having to deal with a tyrannical boss at work and most importantly…
Not having to see Rick Flag twenty-four seven.
Even if he may be disarmingly handsome and everything that you wanted.
A loud honk and bright flights come flashing at you and instead of ducking for cover, you stand there like a deer in headlights, as if waiting for the truck to hit you.
A hand reaches out and grabs you by the arm, pulling you back to safety where pedestrians continue on their way. You find yourself staring into the sea foam eyes of the Colonel who does not look pleased one bit. In fact, he looks positively seething with rage. Rage that was about to be directed at you.
“What were you thinking? Are you trying to get yourself killed?” He grips you by the shoulder tightly and you would have swatted his hands away if you weren’t still recovering from the shock of it all. “Are you injured anywhere? Do you need me to take you to the hospital?”
You shake your head slowly and Rick sighs with relief. Apparently, he only just realizes what he is doing and removes his hands as if like he had touched something that he shouldn’t have. This annoys you and is also enough to tip you over the edge.
“What’s your problem?”
Rick’s brows furrow in confusion before his face twists in disgust. “Is this how you thank someone for saving you from almost being hit by a one ton truck?”
“No, this is me asking if you have a problem with me.” You refuse to back down. “Because it’s either you pretend to be worried or save me from a ‘rookie’ mistake I made on the field and proceed to humiliate me publicly!” You raised your voice. “If you hate me, make it clear. I can’t do anything about work but I can make myself disappear when we’re outside.”
You proceed to turn around to be on your way when Rick holds you by the wrist. He hangs his head, surprisingly defeated by your words. You want to twist yourself out of his grasp, but his sad golden retriever appearance is making it very hard for you to be the villain here.
“Please,” Rick pleads. “Stay.”
An internal you battle, you relent and let him take you to a nearby cafe. He insists on getting you something, so you order a simple hot chocolate to calm your nerves. You remain silent, waiting for what the Colonel has to say.
“I’m sorry.”
You cock your head to the side, unsure if you were hearing things after that truck almost ran you over.
“I didn’t mean to do all of that.” Rick starts. “It was unprofessional and very unlike me. It was just that-” He inhales deeply.
“When I see you throwing yourself in danger or being in danger… my mind stops working. I’m so scared that one day, things will go wrong and I’m left alone again.” He grips the handle of his mug tightly.
“Remember when you saved those two children?”
“How could I forget?”
“You were amazing for that. You were fearless and brave. That’s what I wanted to tell you. But my fear became the better of me and I hurt you instead.” Rick recounts bitterly.
“I never hated you. I just didn’t want you to know how much I liked you.”
Rick can’t bring himself to look at your reaction. Perhaps a peek and he sees that your mouth is hanging open slightly. Oh, he’s done it. He’s really blown this to bits. Perhaps he can file in a transfer when he gets to work - yeah, as if Waller would allow that. Perhaps death would be the best option.
“Then say it.”
Rick stares at you, dumbfounded. A small smile is etched on your lips. “Say it you big dummy.” You laugh this time and his heart skips a beat.
“Okay, maybe I’ll say it first. Get the ball rolling hm?” You add playfully, enjoying the look on his face. “I lo- oof!”
Rick knocks his chair over from standing up to fast as he makes his way to you, engulfing you in a big and warm embrace. You freeze but only momentarily before melting into his hug that smelled like cinnamon.
“I love you Y/N Y/S/N.” He says breathlessly before giving you what was possibly the most mind shattering kisses that you ever had.
The Christmas lights start to dance around each other and the music in the cafe plays a slow jazz song. People trickle in and out for a nice warm drink and you are content with how Christmas has played out today.
Christmas could be different after all.

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus (Rick Flag x F!Reader)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Main Master List       DC Master List
Warnings: none, just pure fluff
Original Idea by @neon-supernova and in honor of it being December I decided to post this on the first to set off a month of festive fics (and others)
----------
Rick lets out a giggle as you hush him, nervously looking around the downstairs of your house. If your kids saw their dad as Santa Claus, it would ruin Christmas for them, and you are not about to let your big goof of a husband ruin it for them. “You gotta be quiet honey.”
“Don’t worry, darlin’. Quiet is my middle name.” You roll your eyes at your husband before returning to your task of laying down a light dusting of powdered sugar by the fireplace and leaving a trail towards the tree while Rick rocks on his heels, wearing a full Santa outfit, pot belly and beard included, though Santa probably wouldn’t have a wide shoulder frame, let alone be 6’2.
“Ok, so you’re going to step one by one and make a trail leading towards the Christmas tree, then you’re going to have to take a sip or two of milk and eat some of the cookies.” Rick goes from mockingly saluting you to falling pale in an instance, the thought of eating his kids’ cookies already upsetting his stomach. It’s not that they taste bad, as a matter of fact the dough tasted rather good, it’s the fact that you and your kids forgot to set an alarm and then got distracted with making decorations that the cookies burnt in the oven and if it wasn’t for Rick’s attentiveness, they probably would’ve burnt the house down. “They’re not gonna be that bad, chill out.”
“I don’t know, baby, they look like lumps of coal that Santa would give to a person who’s been naughty.” He jokes, moving toward the fireplace and stepping in the powdered sugar, looking down at his feet. “Is this good enough?”
“Yes Mr. Claus.” Rick offers you a smirk as he takes one step at a time, making sure to leave visible boot prints in the faux snow as he makes his way over to the lit tree with seemingly endless presents underneath. If there is one thing for certain, it’s the fact that Rick loves to spoil his kids. Coming to a stop in front of the tree, he looks at the cookies before looking back to you, a look of despair on his face as you stifle a laugh, unaware of a pair of eyes watching the interaction. “Go ahead, Santa, eat the cookies those sweet kids made for you.”
Rick visibly gulps and picks up one cookie in his gloved hand, inspecting it through cut out glasses before dipping it into the milk and taking a big bite, grimacing at the taste of burnt sugar before swallowing. If he’s being honest, he’s had worse. “Is that good enough?”
“Mmhmm, would you like your Christmas present now, or later?” Your arms wrap around his expanded torso, looking up at the former colonel with love as he adjusts his gray beard, impure thoughts running through his head.
“Depends, is it a naughty gift or a nice gift?”
“A nice gift.” You release one arm and reach behind you, pulling out two sticks as Rick’s eyes widen, glowing a soft gold from the light of the Christmas tree.
“Are you?”
“It’s not confirmed yet. I have a doc appointment on Wednesday, but according to this, yeah, I am.” Rick doesn’t hesitate to lift you into his arms and spin you around as you laugh in joy. When you and Rick had started dating and eventually got serious, you knew he always wanted a big family and now that he has time for it, you’re more than willing to give it to him.
“Oh sweetheart, this is the best Christmas gift ever.” Rick sets you down and drags you into him, pressing a soft but passionate kiss to your lips as you melt into him, a soft gasp causing you to break away and look to the stairs where a pair of feet can be seen running up the steps as you mentally curse yourself. You should have known John would be sneaking around, but Rick’s lips on your forehead stirs you from your thoughts.
“Hey, it’s okay. As far as he knows, I‘m just Santa. Now how about we get to bed? What says you, Mrs. Claus?”
“I think that sounds good. I love you, Rick.”
“I love you too, honey.”
----------
The next morning you wake up at the first peep of light through your bedroom window, only to see John standing at the foot of your bed, a stuffed animal in his hand and in his dinosaur Christmas pajamas.
“Hey baby, what are you doing up?” He doesn’t answer you, instead, he rushes over to Rick’s side of the bed and climbs on top of his dad, waking the retired soldier.
“Hey buddy, what are you doing up?” Comes Rick’s tired question, reaching up to rub the sleep out of his eyes. Judging by how dark it is still in the room, he probably guesses it's around 6 am.
“I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus.”
“Is that so?” John nods, clutching his rhino stuffie to his chest as Rick looks over to you with a knowing smile, one which you return. “Well, mommy was probably just thanking Mr. Claus for bringing you and Sophie all those cool gifts,” Rick sits up and tickles John’s side as the kid collapses into heaps of giggles in Rick’s lap, curling into his father as you roll out of bed and put on your robe, a soft smile forming on your face before heading toward the door.
“Okay you two, let’s go wake your sister and go open those presents and drink some hot chocolate. How does that sound?” John simply nods his head before bolting out the door and into his sister’s room, most likely bouncing on the bed as Rick stretches out while you raise an eyebrow at him. “You almost blew it.”
“Relax, will ya? Go set Sophie and John down by the tree and I’ll make us some coffee and them some hot chocolate.”
“Alrighty and Rick?”
“Hmm?”
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For sucking up and doing the whole Santa Claus get up.” Rick chuckles before making his way over to you, pulling you into his arms and pressing a soft kiss to your lips.
“No, I should be thanking you. You’ve given me a family and it’s something I never thought I would have until I met you, so thank you.” And maybe it’s your pregnancy hormones, but the genuinity of his words has tears welling in your eyes.
“I love you so so much.”
“I love you too.”

Standing at the bow of the catamaran, watching as the sun begins its slow descent below the horizon of the crystal blue Aegean Sea, you take a sip of champagne and lean back into the warmth of the firm body behind you.
You’d never believed in perfect moments until you met Rick Flag. That sort of thing was reserved for Hallmark movies and other people’s lives. Certainly not your own. But everything changed on that fateful day when Rick was wheeled onto your ward, and you’ve never looked back.
Since then, the two of you have enjoyed plenty of your very own perfect moments. Sneaking out to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks together on the hospital roof; reuniting in that same spot three months later and sharing your first kiss; the day Rick finally moved into your tiny apartment, where you celebrated with take-out and cheap wine, and he told you he loved you for the very first time.
And of then course, there’s right now.
“It’s so beautiful,” you marvel as Rick’s hand finds its way to your waist. Surrounded by the seemingly endless ocean, the view belongs on a postcard. It’s hard to believe this sliver of paradise is real. Sometimes, it’s hard to believe that Rick is real.
The trip to Greece had been Rick’s idea. An old friend of his owns a property on one of the small islands and he had whisked you away as a surprise. After taking extra shifts at the hospital to help save up for a bigger place, God knows you were in need of a break. A week away from work, with nothing but the sun, sea and Rick for company sounded like your idea of heaven and so far, it hasn’t disappointed.
You feel Rick lean forward, brushing his lips against the column of your throat. His breath is warm and sweet from the sparkling wine. “I hadn’t noticed.”
You can’t help the smile that tugs at your mouth as he pulls you closer, his broad hand applying the slightest amount of pressure to your waist.
“Don’t tell me this view is boring you?” you tease softly at his not-so-subtle move.
As content as you would be to stand here and admire the breath-taking view all evening, one thing during this trip has become painfully clear: while the slower pace of life has been a welcome change for you, Rick Flag was never built to relax.
You noticed it earlier today whilst watching him from the comfort of your sun lounger, sunglasses hiding the fact that you couldn’t take your eyes away from his body. And who could blame you? It had taken some gentle encouragement on your part before Rick was comfortable removing his shirt away from the privacy of your villa. Almost a year has passed since his injury and the operation that followed, but the scar across his chest has yet to fade. To ease his mind, you’d found a secluded spot on the beach, away from prying eyes and curious gazes, assuring him that scars or no, he is perfect to you. With a shy smile he'd allowed you to unbutton his shirt.
If you had your way, it would have remained off for the rest of the vacation.
Especially now that three days into the trip, his supple skin has turned golden in the sun. Combined with the muscle that’s gradually returning since he left the hospital, he looks more and more like one of the ancient Greek statues with each passing day. He’d laughed when you told him this, the sound like music to your ears.
But today, as your gaze travelled over his tanned, muscular thighs on display beneath his swim shorts, you realised his legs were bobbing anxiously, the paperback you brought along for him lying unopened by his feet.
Having been hospital bound for the best part of four months, you realised you could hardly blame him for feeling restless. In his position, the last thing you'd want to do is spend your free time on a bed of any description. Your suggestion of taking a walk to the marina was met with a grateful smile and when his face lit up at the poster advertising a sunset champagne cruise this very evening, you resolved to find more exciting ways to fill your vacation.
Carefully, Rick spins you around to face him. His hazel eyes are sparkling as they catch the last of the sun’s warm rays.  Running your hand along his white button-down shirt and feeling the steady, reassuring beat of his heart, your own chest tightens with love for the beautiful man beside you. You wish you could capture this moment and bottle it forever.
“I’m not bored,” he assures you with a wry smile, covering your wandering hand with his own. “Just wonderin’.”
Intrigued, you arch an eyebrow, prompting him to continue.
“What did I do to deserve you, darlin’?”
Your heart flutters, even as you try to rein in the huge smile blooming across your face. “I guess some things are just meant to be.”
“Couldn’t have put it better myself.”
Rick takes your drink and places it beside his own on the side of the boat. A flicker of nervousness crosses his face, and he clears his throat, but before he can say another word the sound of a motor, loud and startling, shatters the tranquillity of the otherwise perfect evening.
Twisting in Rick’s arms, you look out once more across the vast expanse of sea and spot a small speedboat rapidly heading towards your larger vessel. Some of your fellow passengers are similarly staring at the cause of the sudden commotion. There hasn’t been another boat in sight for hours.
You feel Rick’s hand tighten around your waist again and when you return to meet his gaze, his handsome face is drawn into a grimace. “You gotta be fuckin’ kiddin’ me.”
Confused, and more than a little concerned by Rick’s reaction, you glance back at the speedboat just in time to hear a whoop and a high-pitched cackle over the obnoxiously loud engine. As the smaller boat continues its fast approach, you’re finally able to make out the passengers, oddly familiar despite their current appearance. A tall, bearded man in a vibrantly coloured Hawaiian shirt stands at the helm, accompanied by a pale, bikini-clad woman with bright blonde pigtails. The reason for their familiarity suddenly dawns on you.
Although you only met them the once on Christmas Eve, you weren’t likely to forget the faces of Harley Quinn and Digger Harkness in a hurry.
“What the hell are they doin’ here?” Rick mutters from behind you as their boat pulls up next to your catamaran and Boomer kills the engine.
“Hey Flag!” Harley yells excitedly, standing up to wave and nearly losing her balance in the process. “Whoops! Long time, no see. How ya doin’?”
“Is it still Colonel, or should we call you Captain now, mate?” Boomer laughs, grabbing Harley’s arm to steady her as the boat bobs about in the water.
“Oh, hey there sweet'ums!” Harley’s attention drifts from Rick, landing on you instead. “I remember you. Looks like ya did a great job nursin’ old Flag back to health.” She nudges Boomer, clearly pleased with her joke.
“I don’t even want to know what you two are doin’ here,” Rick grumbles, having to shout to make himself heard. “Get yourselves back on dry land, then we’ll talk.”
“Aye, aye, Cap’n.” Both Harley and Boomer offer him a mock salute before the latter restarts the engine and the speedboat takes off across the waves once more.
Once they’re safely out of sight, you turn to Rick. The other passengers shoot a few bemused glances your way but otherwise continue to mind their own business. It doesn’t seem to assuage Rick’s embarrassment though.
“I’m so sorry about that,” he grinds out. “I have no idea what-”
You cut him off, rising onto your tiptoes to press your lips against his. He catches you in his arms, surprised.
“Don’t worry about them,” you urge, brushing your lips over the sweet spot below his ear. “We have another hour before we make it back to shore.” You kiss him again, tasting the salt of the ocean on his skin. “Enjoy the peace and quiet while it lasts.”
Tumblr media
To Rick’s irritation and your curiosity, Harley and Boomer are indeed waiting for you back at the marina when your boat docks. Rick has barely helped you onto dry land when Harley tackles him with a rib crushing hug.
“What’s this for, Quinn?” He grunts, offering you an awkward grimace over her shoulder.
The blonde eventually steps back, holding him at arm’s length for examination. “Do I gotta have a reason? Can’t I just be happy to see you in one piece?”
“You gave us a scare, y’know,” Boomer pipes up from beside you. He flashes you a toothy grin, a flash of silver gleaming under the floodlights of the marina.
Releasing himself from Harley, Rick takes a protective step towards you and links his fingers with yours. The gesture does not go unnoticed by his friends, who shoot one another a knowing smirk.
“Are we interruptin’ a romantic getaway?” Harley grins, hands flying to her painted red lips in mock surprise.
With his free hand, Rick pinches the bridge of his nose. “What do you want? You know I left ARGUS, right? Whatever trouble you got yourselves into now, I can’t help.”
“Oh, we’re not in trouble.” Harley pokes him in the chest. “We’re on vacation!”
“Vacation?”  Rick repeats, not bothering to hide the scepticism from his voice. “Bit of a coincidence, don’t you think?”
“Hey, when Milton told us he was lettin’ you stay here for free, we figured it was only fair we got to come along, too.”
“Dubois told you where we were goin’?” Rick stares at Harley in disbelief.
“Not in so many words.” She twirls the end of one pigtail. “Boomer might’a looked at his messages.”
Her companion grins. “Guilty as charged.”
A weary sigh escapes from Rick’s lips. “Here’s what you’re gonna do. Your gonna march your asses straight back to the airport and catch the next flight back to who the hell cares.”
Harley’s face falls and you tug on Rick's hand sharply, wondering whether you can persuade him to reconsider.
Boomer beats you to it.
“Ay listen mate, we ain’t your skivvies no more. You can’t tell us what to do. Harls wanted to check on you, but you moved away without tellin’ anyone. Had to track you down through Dubois.”
“It’s OK Boomer, he don’t want us here. Let’s go.” Harley links her arm through her friend’s and starts to pull him away.
“Wait!” You surprise everyone by raising your voice before turning to Rick. “Perhaps they could stay for a little while? It was a long way to come and there’s plenty of room in the villa.”
Harley’s crestfallen expression shifts into one of hope as she stares at Rick. “You won’t even know we’re here. Pinkie swear!”
Meanwhile, Rick clenches his jaw in obvious discomfort. “You sure about this? These guys are fuckin’ idiots.”
Unaffected by such a scathing assessment, Harley bounces on the balls of her feet. “Yeah, but we’re your fuckin’ idiots.”
Tumblr media
Rick wakes you the next morning before the sun has fully risen. You shoot him a questioning look as he presses a finger to your lips, but the intention is clear. Even with Harley and Boomer installed at the opposite end of the villa, he doesn’t want them to hear; his plans for today only extend to the two of you.
After disembarking from the sunset cruise last night with two extra guests in tow, you had suggested drinks at one of the beach bars, figuring that Rick likely needed some liquid courage to deal with such an unexpected visit, or at the very least, something to ease the shock.
Between them, Harley and Boomer managed to relieve the bar of two bottles of Ouzo and plenty of colourful cocktails, so it’s safe to assume they won’t be waking up any time soon. Still, amused by Rick’s attempt at stealth, you dress in silence and find yourself strapped into the passenger seat of the hired jeep just as the sun finally emerges over the crest of the hills.
“Where are we going?”
Rick flashes you a disarming smile, tapping his fingers against the steering wheel. “Somewhere they can’t find us.”
Somewhere turns out to be a stunning cove on the opposite side of the island, almost two hours’ drive from the villa. The beautiful stretch of white sand is completely deserted except for the two of you - your very own slice of paradise for the day.
Rick helps you out of your floral sundress, not missing the opportunity to gently caress your skin with his calloused fingers as he slips the thin straps over your shoulders. Then, once you’re both stripped down to your bathing suits, he lifts you into his strong arms.
Wrapping your legs tightly around his broad waist, you cling to him tightly as he begins to wade out into the sea. To your amusement, his expression rapidly shifts from one of thinly veiled lust to sudden shock when the icy water reaches his thighs.
“Fuck! Brace yourself, darlin’.”
It’s still early, so the sun has not yet had time to warm the sea and even though you’re expecting it, you can’t help but let out a yelp when the waves lap against your own skin for the first time.
Rick laughs, tightening his grip around you as he continues to move away from the shoreline. Once again, the sound tugs at your heartstrings, especially when you think of how far he’s come since those dark days when the two of you first met. You know with certainty you’ll never take that sound for granted.
As you find yourself submerging deeper under the surface of the water, you start to acclimatise to the temperature. Relaxing in his arms, you tilt your head forwards and press a kiss to Rick’s temple.
“Thank you for bringing me here.”
His eyes shutter and when he opens them, concern lines his face. “I’m sorry about last night. You sure you want those two idiots stayin’ with us?”
You lean forwards again, this time pressing your lips to the crease that has formed between his brows. “I know what they did for you, Rick. I know if it weren’t for them, you wouldn’t be here. We never would have met. The least I can do is to let them stay with us for a couple of days. They obviously care about you in their own... unique way.”
He pulls a face but doesn’t argue. “You’re too damn good, you know that?”
You spend the rest of the morning swimming in the crystalline blue sea. When Rick is finally able to coax you out of the water, he lays you down on the beach towel and hovers above you, a soft smile playing on his handsome face. Your eyes are immediately drawn to his chest, where a mouth-watering amount of golden skin glistens in the midday sun. Biting your lip, you meet his gaze. There’s not a soul around, and Rick is staring back at you with hunger in his beautiful hazel eyes. But there’s something else there, too. Something you can’t quite put a label on.
Reaching up, you clutch his shoulder and pull him into a kiss. His lips are warm and soft and as he gently eases his weight down, covering you with his huge body, your lower belly stirs with the beginnings of desire.
Rick deepens the kiss, groaning softly as you run your fingers through the damp lengths of his hair, but just before you can wonder if this is really going to happen, he withdraws, coming to kneel in front of you.
“I wanna talk to you about somethin’,” he begins. The same wavering note of tension is evident in his voice, just as it was last night on the boat.
You allow him to pull you into a seated position, but before he can continue, a speck on the horizon catches your eye, pulling your attention away from Rick.
He follows your line of sight across the expanse of white sand and as the two of you watch, the dark speck gets closer and closer, until you realise just exactly what it is; a person is hurtling towards the ocean – towards you. But it’s not just any person. It’s Boomer. And he’s completely naked.
“Oh my God!” Your hands fly to your face, covering your eyes as Boomer reaches your spot on the sand, but not before you see the abject horror in Rick’s expression.
“What the hell!? HARKNESS!” Rick launches himself up and starts storming towards the shoreline, where Boomer is thankfully now submerged beneath the surface of the gleaming water.
Climbing tentatively to your own feet, you wander over to Rick’s side and observe warily as the Australian thief bobs about beneath the waves.
“Crikey mate, s’a bit nippy, ain’t it!” Boomer exclaims, mischief sparkling in his eyes as he grins at the pair of you.
“What are you doin’ here?” Rick demands.
“Heard it was the ideal place for a swim.”
“Get out.”
Hearing Rick bark orders at Boomer, it’s not a stretch to picture him in the role of colonel.  Your chest flutters, and the desire from moments ago swiftly and surprisingly returns.  But when you remember the fact that Boomer, in all his naked glory, is barely a few metres away, the desire just as quickly dies.
Lacing your fingers with Rick’s, you squeeze his hand.  “Do we really want him to get out?” you mutter under your breath.
A flicker of understanding crosses Rick’s face. “On second thoughts-”
But it’s too late. Boomer is already wading back to the shoreline, heading straight for your vacated beach towel.
You avert your gaze, turning into the safety of Rick’s chest. His arms wrap around you protectively. You can feel his heart hammering against your cheek, a mixture of anger and frustration coursing through his body.
“Knew lettin' them stay was a bad idea,” he grunts.
Tumblr media
If Rick was annoyed about being interrupted on the beach, it’s nothing compared to his mood by the end of the week. Despite Harley and Boomer’s persistent presence, you’ve tried to arrange activities that will keep Rick and his restless body active. Unfortunately, everything you plan - from hiking through the island’s lush green hills, to rollerblading along the picturesque seafront - ends up being gate-crashed by the two ex-criminals.
Rick, already less than amused by the prospect of rollerblading, was left furious when Harley rocked up, somehow mistaking the activity for roller-derby. She had promptly proceeded to body slam into him at full speed, resulting in cuts and bruises all round, not to mention the greatest casualty of all: Rick’s wounded ego.
You find him later that evening, sulking in the bedroom. The soft orange glow of the setting sun illuminates the hard planes of his body, bare from the waist up, and you swallow the lump of desire forming in your throat.
He glances up when you enter, a frown creasing his handsome face. “I just want us to have one hour alone, is that really too much to ask for?”
Offering a sympathetic smile, you crawl onto the bed behind him and wrap your arms around his thick waist. His body is scorching against your own bare skin, still damp from the pool where you’ve been cooling off for the last few hours. “I’m sorry, babe. I was really trying to think outside the box. I had no idea Harley liked rollerblading. How’s your knee holding up?”
Rick merely grunts in response, but you feel him soften in your arms. Resting your chin on his shoulder and pressing a kiss to his jaw, you continue. “Tomorrow’s our last night. Let’s go out to dinner. We’ll invite the two of them, as well -” Rick stiffens at the suggestion, but he lets you continue. “-that way, at least we won’t have any nasty surprises if they do show up.”
After a moment to consider, Rick relents. “Not exactly what I had in mind for our last night, but sure.”
You brush your mouth over his jaw again, but this time he turns his head, causing your lips to meet, and what was intended to be a chaste kiss swiftly heats up. Before you can catch a breath, Rick is deftly manoeuvring you into his lap, and in a matter of seconds, he’s expertly drawing soft moans from you, his hands caressing every inch of available skin.
“Where are they now?” he asks roughly, between open mouthed kisses to your neck and chest.
Aside from sleep, this is one of the first moments you’ve had to yourselves since Harley and Boomer showed up on their speedboat, and you’re pretty sure Rick is thinking the same as you. It’s been a struggle to keep your hands off him, and while somehow you doubt his friends would care, you’ve tried to minimise public displays of affection.
“They’re out.” Your response turns into a gasp as his fingers slip beneath the waistband of your bikini bottoms, leaving you in no doubt of where he intends this to make-out session to lead.
Rick plucks at the strings of your bikini top, and it quickly falls away from your body. “For how long?”
“Who knows?” Who cares, you think, as he replaces the item of clothing with his hand, softly cupping and kneading your sensitive flesh. When he touches you like this, you don’t even know your own name.
“We’ll have to be quick.” His voice is a growl, deep and rumbling; you feel it in the pit of your stomach.
“I don’t mind.”
You’ve barely freed Rick from the constraints of his swim shorts when the villa door slams open and high-pitched giggling echoes down the hallway.
“Fuck!”
Tumblr media
The restaurant is beautiful. The food is delicious. Even the company, Rick has to concede, is uncharacteristically well-behaved. If he’s completely honest he had been disappointed by your suggestion of going out to dinner with Harley and Boomer because it had been his intention to finally get you alone. But the night is still young, and maybe, just maybe, his efforts won’t go to waste.
After the main course, Rick makes his excuses and slips into the bathroom. He doesn’t like leaving you unattended with those two idiots for long, but he needs a minute to gather his thoughts. He wants this to be perfect; it’s the least you deserve.
Scrutinising his reflection in the mirror, he takes a deep breath. There isn’t a single doubt in his mind that this is the right thing to do. Still, it doesn’t make it any less terrifying. Before meeting you, he never had to worry about rejection, never gave much thought to how others perceived him. But now, just like that evening on the roof of the hospital, he’s been rehearsing what he wants to say. And ever since the plane touched down on the island, he’s been waiting for the right moment. He just hopes he hasn’t waited too long.
Rick scrubs a hand over his jaw. He wonders if you see what he does. The shadow of fear that still follows him around. Because he knows just how precious every moment is, just how fleeting life can be. By some small miracle he was given a second chance and he doesn’t want to spend another second of that without you.
Squaring his shoulders, he gives his reflection a final frown. Man up, Flag.
He's barely opened the bathroom door when the sound of shattering porcelain causes his stomach to drop.  God, how he wishes he had the option to run. To turn on his heel and flee the restaurant without having to deal with whatever the hell he’s about to walk into. He’s tired. So goddamn tired of having to babysit those two idiots, but the knowledge that you’re out there, fielding the chaos alone, is enough to make him see red.
He strides back into the restaurant. For the briefest of moments, Rick wishes he had run.
Harley is now standing atop the dining table, an armful of plates in her possession. Cheered on by Boomer, she’s dropping the plates onto the floor and stomping her feet in time to the music. A crowd of restaurant staff have gathered around, waving their arms and shouting in Greek, but amidst the commotion, Rick’s gaze quickly lands on you.
Face creased in embarrassment, you’re tugging at the hem of Harley’s floral dress, trying to coax her down from the table. Your anxious eyes meet Rick’s across the room, and he doesn’t miss the way your shoulders sag with relief. He’s quick to join your side, cursing himself for ever leaving you in the first place.
“Get down. Now,” he barks over the shouting and the music and the smashing.
Harley pauses. In her outstretched hand she clutches another plate. She’s holding it out over the floor, where it’s ready to drop. Her pale face stretches into a wide grin as Rick snatches the delicate china from her grip. “Don’t be such a spoilt sport, Flag. We’re just havin’ a bit of fun! And it’s tradition, ain’t it?”
Rick offers the plate to one of the many disgruntled staff members, before rescuing the remaining dishes from Harley’s dangerous embrace. At the back of his mind, he’s calculating how much the damage is going to cost him. “This ain’t that kinda place, Harley. And I ain’t tellin’ you again. Get. Down.”
Boomer pulls a face across the table. “Lighten’ up, boss. The locals are lovin’ it.”
If you ask Rick, the locals are most certainly not ‘lovin’ it’. If anything, their fellow restaurant guests look terrified. And who could blame them?
Once the plates are safely out of Harley’s possession, Rick grabs her by the waist and lifts her off the table, before seizing Boomer by the scruff of his collar. He flashes you an apologetic grimace. “Excuse us for a minute, darlin’.” Then, without waiting for your response, he hauls his ex-squad mates out of the dining area.
With Harley and Boomer reluctantly in tow, Rick soon finds himself on the rooftop of the restaurant. The sun has almost set, the sky turning a brilliant shade of burnt orange, but he doesn’t have time to appreciate the view, nor his surroundings. The small area seems to be some special kind of dining area, complete with fairy lights and flower-covered trellis, but it’s currently abandoned. Perfect. He doesn’t want an audience for this.
“That’s it,” he tells the two criminals, coming to a halt beside one of the long wooden tables. “I’m done playin’ nice. The two of you need to leave. Now.”
“Why?” Harley pouts, arms folded across her chest as she stares Rick down.
Boomer slings his arm around her, presenting a united front. “Yeah, it’s a free country, ain’t it?”
“Why?” Rick pinches the bridge of his nose and shakes his head. “Cos you’ve ruined this entire trip. Every single moment we get alone, the two of you appear. And don’t get me started on whatever the hell that was back there. I can’t take it anymore. This was supposed to be perfect.”
“Perfect?” Harley scrunches her face in distaste. “Who wants perfect? If you ask me, that sounds kinda borin’-”
“I’ve been tryin’ to propose,” Rick blurts out, his shoulders slumping as he realises what he’s just revealed.
From the look on Harley’s face – eyes bright and teeth bared in glee - it’s clear there’s no taking it back. “You’re gonna ask her to marry you?”
“I’ve been tryin’ all damn week,” he grumbles. “But you guys are constantly interuptin’. Startin’ to think it was a bad idea.” Because clearly, with these two showing up, he still has baggage. Does he really want to subject you to this again? He might have left Waller and ARGUS in the dust, but he’s beginning to suspect that along with the lingering nightmares, he’ll never quite shake off the squad.
“Don’t be such a pessimist, Flag,” Harley chastises. “I think it’s a brilliant idea. Never had you down as such a romantic, tho’.”
Rick frowns. “Yeah well, I think the moment has passed.” Why on earth would you want to marry him after the performance back there?
“Never had you down as a quitter either, mate.” Boomer is clearly enjoying every moment of this. “But if you really are throwin’ in the towel, mind if I cut in?”
Rick no longer has the energy to respond. Revealing his true intention has taken the wind from his sails. He just wants to go home, hopefully with you in tow, and forget about this nightmare. Something tells him it’s not going to be easy, though. Because Harley’s cocking her head now, and Rick can practically see the cogs turning. A sure sign of trouble.
“Don’t go anywhere.” She grins at him, grabbing Boomer by the hand. “We’ll take care of this.”
Rick’s stomach churns. “No, wait. Harls. I don’t want you to do anythin’.”
But it’s too late. Short of chasing after them, his only choice is to continue hiding out here, or go back inside and face you. To try and salvage as much of this evening as he can. Tomorrow, you’ll be on the plane home. He wanted this trip to be perfect, but he realises this was just wishful thinking. Maybe there’s no such thing as perfect.
“Rick? Is everything ok?”
He spins around to find you standing at the top of the stairs, your brow pinched in confusion as you take in the quaint surroundings, and in stark contrast, his flustered expression.
“Where did those two go in such a hurry?”
He starts to close the distance, his chest already feeling lighter at the sight of you. “I am so fuckin’ sorry about them, I-”
“Stop.” You cut him off, your gentle fingers covering his lips. “You’re not responsible for them. Not anymore. And I managed to smooth things over with the owner. Just as long as they never come back here, we should be fine.”
As you stroke his cheek, your lips brushing over his own, Rick softens beneath your touch. The weight of the evening starts to fall away, and his hands find your waist, drawing you closer. It’s a struggle not to bury his head against your shoulder, to lose himself to the feeling of your soft, warm body. How many nights have you held him close like this? Chasing away the demons and the nightmares.
“It’s beautiful out here,” you remark, finally pulling away. But Rick has barely noticed. He only has eyes for you. “Do you think if I slipped them an extra-large tip, they’d let us have dessert out here?”
“I somehow doubt that, darlin’. Think we’re lucky they haven’t hauled our asses outta here yet.”
“True.” Taking Rick’s hand, you lead him towards the edge of the roof and gesture towards the horizon. “But it’s kind of perfect, don’t you think?”
Following your gaze as you look out across the town, Rick puts himself in your shoes; allowing himself a moment to appreciate the beauty of the blue and white buildings bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun, of the dark blue ocean sparkling in the distance. It’s one of the many things he loves about you. Your ability to look beyond. To see the good in people. To see the good in him. You know all of his secrets, all the terrible things he’s done, and yet you’ve never once judged him.
A comfortable silence wraps itself around the two of you. It’s almost a shame to break the spell, but the words are threatening to burst right out of Rick’s chest, and he wants to make sure he gets them right.
Slowly, he turns to face you. “I’ve spent this entire trip tryin’ to find the perfect moment. Maybe if I’d got outta my own head for just a second I would’a realised. It don’t matter what we’re doin’, or who’s around. As long as you’re by my side, everythin’s already perfect. So, I ain’t gonna wait any longer.”
Before you can ask what the hell he’s talking about, Rick drops to one knee and slips his hand into his pocket - thank god the small velvet box is still in there. He opens it up, revealing the delicate diamond ring he picked out months ago, that he’s been carrying around this entire trip. “Will you marry me?”
Your eyes instantly water, but Rick’s heart leaps. He knows it’s the good kind of tears, because you’re biting your lip and nodding your head, a huge smile brightening your beautiful face. “Yes. Yes, of course. Yes!”
With shaking hands, Rick slips the ring onto your finger. It’s a perfect fit.
Still grinning, you pull him to his feet, but before your impatient lips can meet, a thunderous boom fills the air. The two of you freeze, your eyes wide and mouths only inches apart, and then the night sky erupts in a burst of colours.
“Fireworks?” You look to Rick, your expression full of wonder.
He’s about to explain - this has nothing to do with him, but a high-pitched giggle can be heard from the street below. Rick shakes his head. Despite everything they’ve put him through over the last few days, he has to hand it to Harley and Boomer. Their timing is exceptional.
With your lips still only inches apart, you raise your brow to Rick. “I guess this means they’re off the hook?”
Words will be exchanged later, he has no doubt about that, but for now the only thing on Rick’s mind is you. Closing the distance, he presses his lips to yours just as the next round of fireworks lights up the sky. Maybe he was wrong earlier. Maybe the perfect moment does exist.

rick flag masterlist
Such a Tease
“Captain, come in!” the voice of Rick Flag came through your radio as you approached the outside gates of the enemy base with your squadron. “Are your troops in position?”
“We’re approaching the outer gates on the north side now Colonel,” you said, and the other men all looked to you for direction. “So far we haven’t run into any hostiles.”
“There’s been a change of plan,” Rick said, and you could hear the sound of fighting and chaos in the background. “We were ambushed on the south side of the building, and we need backup.”
“Copy that,” you said. “I’ll send my men around to help you and then I’ll continue with the original plan.”
“No!” you heard him shout. “It’s too dangerous to go forward by yourself-”
But you cut him off. “Colonel, if one of us doesn’t make it into the building to get the intel we came for, this entire mission will be a complete waste of our time.”
“Y/N!” he said, and the use of your name during a mission shocked you. “It’s too risky to try and do this by yourself, you won’t make it.”
“Rick, I need to do this,” you said before turning the radio off, and you knew that Rick was probably incredibly annoyed, wherever he was. You then handed your radio off to one of the other soldiers you were with, and he looked at you with a confused look on his face.
“Captain?” What are you doing?” he asked
You kept your gaze even as you addressed him. “Lieutenant, take the rest of the troops down to the south entrance and help Colonel Flag. You’re in charge from now until you meet up with him and the rest of his troops.”
“But what about you?”
You took a deep breath. “From what I just heard, a majority of the hostiles are at the South entrance of the building, which means that this entrance is likely unguarded.”
“With all due respect Captain,” the lieutenant said, and you knew what was coming out of his mouth next. “The Colonel said to meet him down at the other entrance.”
“The Colonel may mean well, but he’s kidding himself if he thinks we can get out of here on time with this ambush,” you said. “If he asks, tell him what I said, and if you can get Flag and his troops back to the jet safely and I’m not there, don’t worry about coming back for me.”
“But Captain-”
“That’s an order, Lieutenant,” you said, your voice firm. “Now go, we don’t have much time.” He gave you one last look before calling the rest of the men to follow him, and you were left with the task of breaking into the looming building in front of you.
The one advantage you had with this plan was the fact that one person was a lot quieter than an entire squad, and you managed to take out the two guards stationed at the entry point. The halls of the base were empty as you ran through then, trying to keep your footsteps as quiet as possible. It seemed that the rest of the people stationed here were dealing with Rick and the other men at the south entrance of the building, so you didn’t run into any trouble.
You were thankful that the command room only had two men inside, and you took care of them with ease as you headed to the control desk and plugged in the device you had brought. You weren’t picky in the intel you saved onto the drive, because you didn’t have time to review every single file on the database. It would be better to have more information than needed anyway.
It was the loading time that killed you, and you kept an ear out for any more hostiles as you watched the bar on the screen slowly fill up. You wondered how Flag was doing, and you hoped that you would be able to get the information you needed before the rest of the team left. You knew he was probably fuming at your decision to attempt to do this by yourself, and you would have to answer to that when you made it back, but you knew this was the right thing to do.
Right as you pulled the drive from the computer, you heard the door open and you were suddenly faced with five men, guns all pointed at you. “Gentlemen,” you said, tipping an imaginary hat in their direction before pulling out your own gun and pointing it at them. “I think this is all a big misunderstanding.”
But your adversaries didn’t seem to share the same inclinations as you, and soon you were sprinting through the halls of the base, all of them chasing after you. It was incredibly helpful that the control room had two entrances, or you would have been forced to fight.
Gunshots could be heard all through the building as you continued to run, hoping that they weren’t gaining on you. And when you felt someone grab your arm and pull, you almost screamed.
“Shut up!” Rick’s voice hissed, and he pulled you along.
You had no choice but to follow, and as the two of you raced down the hall in the direction that Rick had come in, you had a realization. “I told the lieutenant-”
“He told me about your stupid little idea,” he said venomously as he ran. “And it’s bad enough that you weren’t following my orders!”
“I got the data, so what’s the big deal?”
He didn’t even bother to respond as the two of you continued to run, and eventually you made it back to the jet safely. Your chest heaved as you collapsed onto the floor of the plane and tried to catch your breath, eyes closed as you were sure the other men stared at you. But you didn’t care what they all thought, because you had the data you had come for.
***
You had given your report to Waller and handed over the drive, so you really wanted to just be done with this mission, but you knew that wasn’t the case. Rick would be here any minute, ready to scold you about your dangerous decision and threaten to remove you from future missions entirely. This was not the first time this happened, but you knew he worried about you.
The exact nature of your relationship with Rick was hard to define. You flirted shamelessly with him and he often flirted right back, but neither of you had ever made a move. To you, that was a clear indicator that he was not interested in pursuing a relationship with you, and although you might have liked to be something more with him, you weren’t angry or resentful. You knew that he cared about you, which is why you often ended up on the other end of his lectures when he thought you acted recklessly, but it was never too bad.
When the door to your office opened and Rick stepped in, you immediately stood up and walked over to him. “I know you’re mad right now,” you said quickly. “But if I hadn’t gone off on my own we wouldn’t have the intel we so desperately needed, and-”
The look on his face silenced you, and he drew closer and closer before you really started to wonder what he was doing. You rarely kept the lights in your office on, preferring the natural light that came in through the windows, so the room was already slightly dark as he stared at you, gaze flickering down to your lips.
Your breath hitched as you stared right back at him, and your mind started to wander. In all your flirting, you had never kissed before, and right now you were really thinking about what it would be like to feel his lips on yours. “Y/N,” he said softly, and you were barely inches apart at this point. “Stop talking.”
You shrank slightly under his gaze, and it got a lot harder to keep your more salacious thoughts at bay, especially with the way his hands were resting on your waist. “Sorry.”
“What I wanted to say,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “Is that what you did out there was-”
Was he going to kiss you right now? You had been expecting a lecture (not a make out session), but you definitely weren’t complaining. You could hear the voice in your head finish his sentence, filling in words like “heroic,” and “commendable.” You instinctively closed your eyes, waiting for the final moment when his lips would land on yours.
Instead, you could feel him pull away. “Incredibly stupid and reckless,” he said, and you opened your eyes to see him standing there, a devilish smirk on his face. He knew what you were thinking, and this was cruel, even for him.
You didn’t even know what to say in response, but that didn’t matter, because all he did was offer you a wink and then walk back out the door, leaving you standing in the middle of the room, mouth still open in shock. You would definitely be getting him back for that.
- the end -

what do you long for?
Tumblr media
-summary; Rick doesn't know why he's drawn to you, perhaps because of the cloud of secrecy that surrounds you. He just wants to know who you are. -warnings; angst, death mention. -a/n; The Quiet American, Graham Greene.
The snow fell fast and heavy. It was freezing in the little trailer. Rick couldn't get the heating to work. You shook and shivered in your corner, quietly. You hadn't said a word since Rick opened the door for you. Now you were trapped. The snow was piling up. It was enveloping the trailer. You were sure this was the end. You'd die here, frozen and silent and practically alone. Rick gasped happily from the other side of the trailer. Your train of thought ended and you looked over. He was holding his hands over a hissing radiator, sighing with relief.
"C'mere," he grunted.
You wandered over. The radiator was warming up. You pressed your back against the wall and slid down it. The heat was slowly seeping into your bones. You smiled. Rick watched. That was the first time he'd seen you smile since you left. He mimicked your position. He rubbed his cold hands together and hissed. He watched you out of the side of his eye. You didn't move, your gaze was empty. You had zoned out again. Rick wanted to know what you were thinking about.
Rick had been on countless missions with you. You had been with him since the beginning. You came on every mission with him, always close by his side. You and Rick were the only ones who persevered. You were the only ones who survived. You were the only permanence in each other's lives. Yet Rick knew nothing about you. He knew your name, he knew that you were one hell of a marksman, but that was it. He longed to know about you. He wanted to know everything about it. It was almost obsessive, unhealthy. Rick longed for you.
"We'll get out of this," Rick said suddenly, making you jump. "We always do, don't we?"
You nodded.
"Waller better give us one hell of a break after this. I need a holiday."
"Where would you go?"
Rick liked the rare sound of your voice.
"Dunno. Somewhere hot," he joked.
You chuckled softly. The cold was still seeping into the trailer, but the radiator was hot against your back. You shuffled closer to Rick, just a few inches. He noticed though, and reached out for your hand. His finger tips grazed yours, and then you both stilled.
"The name on your jacket isn't yours," Rick said.
There was an army jacked flung over your shoulders. There was a Colonels' badge under the name. A last name Rick didn't recognise.
"My dads."
You didn't say anything else. You and Rick sat in silence. Eventually, you fell asleep. You slumped against Rick. He coiled an arm around your waist, holding you close and trying to keep you warm. When you woke up, Rick tried tirelessly to get you to talk. You could tell that fear was beginning to set in. He was worried. He didn't want to die with a total stranger. Sure, Rick was your best friend, but you knew nothing about each other.
"Poker," he said suddenly.
"What?"
"Let's play a game of poker," he said, pulling some old cards off of a shelf behind him.
"I'm no good at poker, Flag."
"Neither am I," Rick lied.
You watched as Rick dealt you both two cards, face down, then another three in the middle of you both. Texas Hold'em Poker, Rick's favourite.
"What are we betting?"
"Information," Rick grinned. "I win, I get to ask you a question and you have to answer. And vice versa."
You nodded. Rick won every round. After a few hours, he knew your birthday, all about your parents, and about your little sister back home. He knew all about your childhood, about the constant moving around. He knew about the almost engagement you had in your early twenties. He knew about the tattoo on your hip, about your fear of spiders. He had one thing he wanted to know, still.
"I fold," you said dejectedly.
Rick grinned. He laid his cards on the floor. He would have won anyway. He stared at you, you couldn't look away. You took a deep, shuddering breath while you waited for Rick's last question.
"What's something you long for?"
"What?"
You didn't expect it. It caught you off guard. You never wanted things. You didn't long for things. You couldn't. Not in this line of work. Rick repeated the question slowly, and offered a half-assed, although genuine, explanation. You had to think. You pursed your lips and furrowed your brow. You had to think for a long while before settling on something.
"From childhood I had never believed in permanence, and yet I had longed for it."
Rick looked at you. Your voice was quiet and on the verge of breaking. He knew where you were coming from. he understood the fear and honesty that coloured your words.
"And I guess I still do. I believed, when I first started this job that maybe I had found permanence. I don't anymore."
"Sweetheart-"
"Death is the only absolute value in this world," you cut him off. "Lose life and you would never lose nothing again forever."
Your stare was blank. You were expressionless. Your words were flat and emotionless and it was unnerving. Rick hated it. He hated this feeling of nothingness. He didn't know if you were sad or angry and it was killing him. So many years, you had been his friend. You always knew what he was thinking. You always had a plan. You always followed his orders. And Rick always knew what to say. Now he was speechless.
"Anyway," you said very suddenly, a false joy in your voice. "Let's go to bed, yeah?"
You picked up the cards and stood up. You didn't wait for Rick. You busied yourself with tidying. You cleaned until there was enough space on the floor next to the radiator for both of you. Rick stood awkwardly in the middle of the room as you lay down. You patted the floor behind you; an order. Rick obeyed and curled around you. You pulled the pile of moth-eaten blankets, sheets and jackets over you.
"Honey," Rick began, a hand reaching out for your hip.
"Go to sleep."
"Please, just- Look at me," his touch was soft, experimental.
"Go to sleep, Rick."
He tried being soft. You were being blunt. You weren't having it. Rick wasn't playing games. At the end of the day, he was your superior officer. He always had been. And you always obeyed.
"Lieutenant," he ordered. Your eyes shot wide open. "Turn around and look at me."
You couldn't start disobeying him now. You were probably going to die out here anyway. The snow was piling up against the trailer. The radiator was banging and hissing concerningly. Cold was nipping at the edges of the blankets. No one was going to find you out here, no one was coming for you. You turned around. It was awkward and you were squashed against Rick's chest, but you refused to move back incase the cold got you.
"Yes, sir?" You recite monotonously.
Rick wanted to tell you that everything would be okay. He wanted to tell you he loved you. He wanted to say that you were his best friend. That he'd be here forever. That death isn't the only thing that's permanent. He wanted to tell you that he'd die for you. And that every day he doesn't tell you he kills himself over and over. Living without you is hell on earth. He loves you. He'd kill his own team for you. he loves you. You and him are permanent. He loves you, he loves you, he loves you.
But he can't.
He let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. He shut his eyes and you watch, curious. He kissed you. You gasped against his lips, your whole body going stiff. Rick pulled away, mumbling an apology. You shook your head. You forced your hands away from your sides to pull him in by the neck. He was more than happy to kiss you again. Suddenly, the cold was indifferent to you. It was hot under the blankets, against Rick.
"We're gonna die out here," he pants.
"No, we're not."
"If we die, then. I don't wanna die without tellin' you that I love you."
You shook your head, again. Before Rick continued, you were tugging on his shirt, forcing his lips back to yours. You slipped your hands under the hem of his shirt, sliding up his waist. He was panting and whimpering into the kiss as you maneuvered yourself to sit in his lap. You gripped the shirt and pulled it clean off of Rick. You heard a bang. Both of you froze. The trailer rocked. You lurched out of Rick's lap, hitting your head during the fall. Neither of you made a sound, not even when you watched a set of sharp teeth sink into the metal of the trailer.
You reached for your gun. The door was ripped out. You sighed in relief, dropping the gun and running to your saviours. Rick stayed back, adjusting his pants while you leapt into Bloodsport's arms.
"I've never been happier to see you, DuBois," you muttered into his neck.
He nodded to a shirtless Rick. You watched as Nanaue chewed on what was left of the trailer's door.
Not another word was ever spoken of that night. You and Rick went on as normal. And every time he saw you shoot a wink as DuBois, or smile at him, or hug him. Every time that you looked at anyone who wasn't him, his heart broke a little. Every day, he killed himself over and over for you.

Midway City: Rules are Made for Breaking
Tumblr media
Inclusion of my OC Suzanna Walker AKA Fade into the Suicide Squad. She is a former colleague of Rick Flag, a childhood friend of Harley Quinn, a former member of the Joker's gang after his escape from Arkham and Harley’s transformation and now a member of the Task Force X team. She will also be getting up close and very personal with our favourite Aussie, Captain Boomerang.
Description
After the events of the 2016 movie what comes next for Fade
Midway City Part 4 of 4
Warnings
I think every member of the Suicide Squad is a warning all by themselves but to be clear there will be violence, swearing, a complete lack of morals or ethics of any kind at times.Spoilers!... and finally SMUT
Word Count: 6603
Tumblr media
“Rise and shine!”
Fade groaned, the noise muffled by her face pressing tightly against the thin mattress of her cot, her one slightly pathetic and stained pillow clamped over her head. It was a vain attempt to block out the steady stream of deafening obscenities spewing from next cell block over without much luck.
Removing her head from under the pillow, her dishevelled hair falling across her face she stared bleary eyed across the room, attempting to discern the source of the voice that had spoken.
A clearly amused Rick stood in the open doorway to her cell, the guards hadn’t bothered to lock it since they’d returned from midway, no point when she could just walk through it any time she liked.
With a deep aggravated sigh of the sleep deprived, Fade rolled over onto her back and swung her legs out to meet the dirty concrete floor with her bare feet, hands reaching up to rub her eyes tiredly as she responded.
“You’re back here quick, world gone to shit already? It’s only been a week”
Rick shrugged and offered a sigh that told her he was no happier about his quick return than she was, no doubt he’d hoped to spend more time with June now she’d been de-witched, courtesy of the Squad.
“World’s always in the shit, but the Squads not being assembled if that’s what you meant. Just a situation here to be dealt with” Rick muttered.
Fade chuckled in response, looking up to his face an amused smirk across her own “You mean Harley’s escape?”
Rick shifted to lean against the door frame, a grumpy look on his face though he eyed her thoughtfully “So you do know about that then? I had wondered”
Fade stretched making all the vertebrae along her back pop with a small wince of relief “I mean that was quite the bang, you think anyone doesn’t know about it?”
He conceded the point with a nod of his head and a thinning of his lips, cocking his head he paused to listen to the jabbering from the next cell block “That Boomerang?” he asked unnecessarily. The man was so loud you could instantly tell it was the Aussie from the accent, and the vibrantly colourful language.
Fade nodded, slumping back against the wall with a yawn “Yeah, he’s been raging since they brought us back and tossed him in solitary”
Rick arched a single eyebrow “That was a week ago”
“I’m well aware” Fade bit out testily “We’re the ones that have been sat here listening to him carrying on”
“He needs to calm down” Rick mused with a shake of his head “It was a mistake to square up to Waller like that”
“You think?” She responded with a snort of derision “Some people just don’t take to captivity that well”
Pulling himself upright again he jerked his head back towards the cellblock through the open door “Walk with me”
“Is that allowed?” Fade teased with another smirk and a raised eyebrow, though she nonetheless rose and slipped her feet into the ugly black crocs that were part of their delightful uniform.
Rick grinned, they both knew full well she could and did just get up and wander around wherever she pleased never mind getting permission “I’m allowing it” he stated unnecessarily.
Shuffling after the soldier with a chuckle, they walked in silence down corridor after corridor until they finally made their way out into the sunshine, Fade blinking back the sting from the harsh light.
Looking around her she realised they were in one of the smaller unused yards, though there had been some additions since she’d last wandered through here. Most notable was the dark green camouflage covered structure in the corner, containing a couple of chairs and a desk of some sort, looking rather like a temporary command tent. Sparing a glance for the rest of the yard she noted the new yet rusty, as all things were in this humidity, basketball hoop set up against the wall, a few weight benches, and some tiered seating across from where they stood, opposite the tent.
“What’s all this Flag?” she murmured, not sure why she was here.
“This is now your exercise yard, just for the task force” Rick announced arms wide as he indicated the new equipment.
Fade scoffed “We prefer Suicide Squad to that task force bullshit. How’d you get Waller to agree anyway?” correctly deducing that it would have been Rick’s idea. After the Squad stepped up and protected him, the city and saved June he’d softened towards them somewhat. He hadn’t forgotten that each one of them were dangerous criminals, nor was he stupid enough to believe he could trust them. He now simply recognised they were people and was treating them as such, Waller would have been content to shut them in solitary and throw away the key until they were needed. As a seasoned CO Rick knew having the squad interact with each other would build that comradery they’d all felt back in Midway, making the team more effective and he’d argued as such until she caved.
“I simply pointed out that a team functions better if they get to know one another a little. She came around after a little coaxing” he responded with a shrug, downplaying how hard he’d had to argue his case on this one.
Fade pursed her lips “So that’s why you’re back so soon, she wouldn’t allow it without your supervision I’m guessing?”
Rick snorted as she got right to the root of the problem “Spending Twenty-Four hours alone locked in a seven by eight concrete box would send anyone crazy and most of you lot are already questionable”
“Look at you Mr Boy Scout America going all soft on a bunch of scumbags” Fade smirked, but behind it she was genuinely pleased to see he was trying to do the right thing by the squad.
“Scumbags yes, but you’re my scumbags” He murmured, smirking at her as he added “Whether I like it or not”
She chuckled at that, turning her attention back to the yard at large asking, “So what’s the thinking we gonna have supervised playdates out here or something?”
Rick nodded thoughtfully “There’s an idea, maybe all he needs is a playmate”
“Who?” Fade frowned turning back to the smirking man at her side “Digger?” she asked eyebrows flying up as he nodded once “Where are you going with this Flag?” she challenged, arms folded across her chest, eyes narrowed to suspicious slits.
“I saw the way you two were looking at each other during Midway” Rick clarified with an incline of his head and wiggle of his eyebrow “GQ said you looked a little flustered when you came out of that alleyway by the bar and then there was the fact he came back when he didn’t have to. I assume you had a little something to do with that”
Fade snorted, here was the Flag she remembered during her time under his command, nothing ever seemed to escape his notice “Think you’re giving me too much credit there”
Fixing him with a teasing look she scoffed “Oh I see how it is, one walk on the wild side with the witch and the boy scout badge goes out the window huh?”
Chuckling he nudged her shoulder with his own “You’re hardly one to talk, lusting after a murdering, foul mouthed thief”
Fade snickered “He’s easy enough on the eyes, and fairly entertaining but it hardly matters. Can’t do anything when we’re locked in here”
“Remind me, can’t you walk through walls?” Rick pointed out, dismissing her argument.
Fade snorted “Voyeurism isn’t my thing” pointing to the cameras around the yard as she spoke.
“Just an obstacle to overcome” Rick responded conversationally with a shrug.
The tone of his voice told her he was up to something, frowning she side eyed the man “Not one I could overcome by myself though is it”
“I noticed you didn’t request a privilege after the mission” Rick murmured changing the subject and leaving Fade confused.
Shrugging she made her way to the bench nearby, sinking down onto it and stretching out her legs in front of her “What was the point, just not being put back under was good enough for me”
“Yeah, well they can’t now anyway as it turns out” he responded, dropping down onto the bench next to her, piquing her curiosity.
“What do you mean?”
“So that explosion was rather bigger than was really necessary” he explained, leaning his head back against the wall and closing his eyes, enjoying the warmth of the sun on his upturned face.
“Joker’s not known for being understated, go big or go home is probably somewhere on his tattooed hide” She snarked, irritated to be thinking about the man.
Looking round and opening his eyes at her tone Rick eyed her thoughtfully “Why didn’t you go with them?”
Fade glowered into the distance thinking of the last time she’d seen the acidic man before Midway “Joker and I have parted ways, you know that”
“Yeah, but you and Harley are still tight” Rick persisted.
Sighing deeply Fade ran a hand through her messy hair “Can’t always protect your friends from the dumb decisions they’re determined to make. Anyway, what’s this got to do with the explosion?”
Rick nodded remembering his original point “Oh yeah, so the device denoted right above some of the storage rooms downstairs and the roof caved in”
“So?” She muttered with an irritated frown, was he taking the scenic route to his point for a reason.
“It was the room they were keeping the neurotoxin in” he supplied with a small smile, waiting for her to catch on to what this meant which didn’t take long.
“So, it’s gone? All of it?” she whispered, not allowing herself to believe it until he said it himself
“All of it, except for the darts the guards already had made up but they seem to have been misplaced as it happens” he confirmed with a swift nod, a wide grin growing on her face “Nice!”
Her smiled dipped when Rick pointed out that it was possible to get more, they just needed to talk to the bat which left her frowning and confused “So why haven’t they?”
“Convinced them it wasn’t necessary” he shrugged still smiling.
“You did that?” she asked incredulous.
Slightly offended he frowned at her “I got some influence you know…” trailing off when Fade merely raised an eyebrow at him “Alright I convinced Lester not to record the loss, he owed me”
She twisted her body towards him curiously “What did you do?”
“Protected him against some people that would have otherwise hurt him” he smirked “Man likes to gamble with the wrong people”
Belatedly realising how this winding tangent had taken them quite far off course Fade attempted to steer him back “So what’s all this got to do with my lack of privilege request?”
Rick practically grinned at her now “I brought you something” reaching down to pick up the box she hadn’t even noticed he’d been carrying he passed it over. Watching her reaction as she opened the lid and stared confused at its contents, her eyes lifting back to his after a long pause “It’s remote-control car” She intoned dully.
“Something to play with” he stated each word carefully with a smirk on his face, only serving to confuse her further “Gee Flag you shouldn’t have” she muttered without enthusiasm.
Chuckling at her response Rick got heavily to his feet and retrieved something from his pocket tossing it to her as he turned to walk away “Here’s the batteries, enjoy”
He was halfway across the yard before Fade realised that they were completely the wrong type of batteries for the toy based on the box. Exasperatedly she called after him, but he just shrugged “My bad” offered her a shit eating grin and strolled back inside without a backwards glance.
With a roll of her eyes Fade considered heading back inside but when no one appeared to usher her away she decided to remain outside in the peace and quiet, rather than to have listen to Digger carrying on for another minute. She felt bad for the guy she did, some people just didn’t cope well to being cooped up and he’d been on solitary confinement for a week. Not even allowed out for his meals after he pissed of Waller royally back at Midway. It was his own fault and the rest of them were more than suffering for it too but still she wished she could do something about it.
She’d considered going to see him more than once but whatever that flaming witch had done to her had left her flickering for days.
Abruptly she held her hands out in front of her, realising she hadn’t flickered once since she’d woken, experimentally she phased in and out fully in control of her powers for the first time in a week.
Gleefully she leapt to her feet grabbing up her new toy and making for the door, pausing only to snatch the battery pack from the floor where she’d dropped it in her haste, only to sit back down and inspect the pack more closely than she had before. Not only where they the wrong type of batteries they weren’t batteries at all.
Glancing up and around Fade noted the location of the camera’s, carefully angling her body so the pack was shielded from view but slowly so no one would suspect she was up to something. Ripping the pack open two objects tumbled into her open hand, turning them over slowly a small smile bloomed on her face when she recognised them.
The first object was no bigger than a lighter, and closely resembled one, a cylindrical metal tube with a button on top that she recognised to be a small electromagnet device that would disrupt electrical equipment in a localised area. She judged by the size of this one it would cover a ten-foot square area at most but that would more than cover the square footage of a Belle Reve cell.
The second object was a simply two strong magnets stuck together which left her frowning, unsure of what use they would this be and then it hit her. The cell doors were steel, a extra strong magnet would be more than enough to either pull the locking mechanism open or more importantly hold it closed.
Jumping to her feet she stowed the contraband in her jumpsuit pocket, snatched up her new toy and returned to her cell via her personal shortcut straight though the nearest wall.
***
“Come on love, please, lemme out” Digger shouted, practically wailing at the guard stood outside his cell. He’d tried to befriend the bitch purely because she was the only human being he’d seen for a week, but she wouldn’t even give him the time of day let alone her name. She was wilfully ignoring him now, he even thought he saw her put in earplugs not long before she slammed shut the viewing slot in his door. He was going out of his mind with boredom staring at the same four bare concrete walls day after day with no one to talk to and nothing to keep him occupied. He wasn’t even sure how long they’d kept him in here or how much longer they intended to keep him locked in. More than once he’d railed about how this wasn’t the way to treat someone that just saved the world and demanded to see Waller. It did no good though, no one came, dropping onto his cot with a heavy flump he leaned forward head in his hands, elbows supported on his knees with a loud groan. Which is why he didn’t notice the new arrival not that he wouldn’t expected anyone to step through the wall of his cell.
“I’ve had a weeklong headache thanks to you” Fade declared as she stepped through the wall an aggravated but amused expression on her face, resolidifying she leant back against the wall, arms crossed over her chest.
“The fuck?” Digger yelped startled, flying up and off his cot he took two quick steps towards the door before he recognised his teammate and relaxed somewhat. Though he still clutched his hand to his chest over his heart with wide eyes dramatically “Jesus Christ Love! You tryin ta gimme a heart attack”
Fade rolled her eyes, but her smile widened despite his antics, it was good to see him “Firstly you don’t have a heart Digger so don’t make out you do, and secondly do you ever stop bellyaching?” she grumbled.
Calming Digger shrugged, ignoring the slight against him as if she hadn’t spoken, turning to look at the door and then back to her with a frown “How didya get in ere?”
She snorted sneering without any real bite “I can walk through walls, remember?”
He nodded like he had forgotten momentarily and then glared at her furiously “So why didnya make an appearance sooner then?” irritated that she’d left him alone when she could have made however long he’d been stuck in here more bearable.
“Only just stopped flickering after whatever that bitch did to me, didn’t want to get stuck in a wall” Fade explained with an ugly look on her face as she referenced the events of last week “Besides…” she smirked niggling him “Didn’t seem to be any point making trouble for myself, figured you’d eventually shut up” she rolled her eyes pointedly but only earned a scowled.
“Surprised ya decided I’m worth the trouble now” he spat glaring at her, becoming more incensed by the moment as she continued to smile serenely at him.
“Well…” she announced slipping off her crocs and dropping onto his cot crossing her legs underneath her “No one knows I’m here”
He snorted derisively and pointed to the camera above her head “We’re bein’ watched sweetheart, member?”
Answering him with a wide grin she glanced up and then back to him “See a red-light genius?”
His eyes snapped up at once, only now realising the tell-tale red light was indeed missing, returning his gaze to her gleeful face he raised an eyebrow in question.
“Seems they’re having some problems with their equipment today” she explained offhandedly the weight of the electromagnet in her pocket comforting against her leg.
“Can ya mess with electrical equipment now too?” he enquired, moving to sit on the cot next to her, letting go of his anger as quickly as it flared now he finally had someone to talk to and knew they weren’t going to be hurried away by the guards.
“No but this can” she shook her head and produced the electromagnet; he recognised the small device immediately having used them once or twice himself on various security systems.
“Where didya get that?” he asked at once curious.
“Ask me no questions and I’ll tell you no lies” she shrugged but continued to grin at him as she popped the device back in her pocket. Allowing her eyes to rake over him for the first time since she’d entered his space her eyes lingering on his bulging muscles and the tattoos she’d not noticed back at Midway. As suspected the man was solid muscle and she was very much enjoying the eyeful he was giving her right now clad only in his grubby tank top, jumpsuit tied at the waist.
He didn’t mind her ogling him in the slightest, the fact that she was being so blatant came as a pleasant surprise but otherwise he didn’t react beyond a raised eyebrow and a snarky comment “Only the first looks free love… What ya doin ere anyway? Not that I’m complainin”
Tearing her eyes away from the very male snack in front of her she caught and held his gaze as she answered “Thought maybe you needed some company, and a better outlet for your… stress” pulling her bottom lip between her teeth she allowed her gaze to drop pointedly to his crotch, bringing them slowly back up to his face.
A slow grin stretched his face as he leered at her but remained sceptical “Ya offerin to help… relieve some tension princess?” After days alone in his cell he wasn’t entirely sure he wasn’t hallucinating or if she was just messing with him, neither prospect was appealing.
“Well…” Fade stood with a smile and a shrug, making as if to leave through the opposite wall “If you’d rather continue sulking, that’s your choice. I can leave you be”
“Nah love don’ go” He all but shouted, leaping up to follow her to the wall. Crowding her against it and placing his hands either side of her head, pinning her with his body, looming over her with lust in his eyes.
Reaching up she wrapped a hand around the back of his neck the other wrapping around his bicep, pulling his lips down to hers, meeting in a feverish kiss that robbed them of breath. Digger’s hands left the wall to wrap around her body as the kiss deepened, one arm snaking around her ribs to slide up her back, palm between her shoulder blades locking her in place against his muscled form. The other skimming over her lower back and coming to rest upon her pert backside, squeezing her flesh harshly in a way that made her whimper into his mouth.
Taking the opportunity to slide his tongue into her mouth he groaned at the sweet taste of her, reigniting the already dimming memory from their brief Midway interlude. Despite being barely a week ago it already felt more like a dream than something that had really happened, but here she was in his arms again and he couldn’t believe his luck. When the need to breath became overwhelming, they reluctantly broke apart, both dizzy and lightheaded but unwilling to break away from one another, their foreheads meeting as they panted.
Dropping her hand from his arm she fished in her pocket for the magnets, pushing him back from her as she retrieved them with a firm hand on his chest. Approaching the door as he stumbled backwards, his evident arousal tenting the heavy material of his jumpsuit in a way that left Fade’s mouth dry and caused an overwhelming need to rub her thighs together.
The confusion was evident on his face “What’s that?”
Snapping the powerful magnets into place over the lock and viewing slot, she turned back to him with a small smirk “Just ensuring no one interrupts us”
“Ya really are serious, aren’ ya?” He asked, still not entirely convinced she wasn’t having him on.
Arching an eyebrow at him she stalked slowly towards him “What’s the matter? Is Captain Boomerang all mouth and no trousers?” she smirked, eyes flicking downwards once more.
Stepping forward he hauled the woman in front of him back into his arms crushing her to him , pressing his groin against hers, eliciting a small moan of pleasure from her that left him grinning “I’m both princess”
“I seem to remember someone promising me a real good time back at Midway” she purred, eyes alight with mischief but dark with lust, finally convincing Digger she wasn’t playing with him.
“Best hold on sweetheart, ya not goin ta know what hit ya”
Reaching up to wind her arms around his broad shoulders she teased him “Oh is the flash here?”
He growled lowly “Shut up woman”
“Make me” she challenged.
“Oh ya askin for it now sweetheart” he whispered lowly, as he claimed her already reddened mouth once more in a searing and rough kiss.
All at once they were back in that Midway City alley, caught between freedom and certain death, clutching at one another’s clothes as if they were the only thing anchoring the other to the world.
Wrapping his large hands around her upper arms, fingers digging into her flesh almost painfully he walked her backwards towards his cot. A sly grin across his face no doubt mirrored by her own expression.
Fade’s knees hit cold steel and then she was falling, thrust backwards from Digger’s arms a small squeal leaving her lips as gravity pulled her down onto the cot with a creaky thump, the rusty old springs objecting to the additional weight.
Recovering herself she looked up into Digger’s thoroughly amused face a low chuckle leaving him “That was a cute little noise darl, wonder what other sounds I can pull from ya before we’re done?”
Fade pulled her bottom lip between her teeth even as she rubbed her thighs together enjoying the sight of him looming over her, a small groan leaving her lips when he tore the tank over his head and flung it away, his broad chest now on full display.
He merely grinned lazily at her reaction when she rapidly pulled herself to her knees, settling in front of him and reaching for him once more. Wrapping his arms around her he pressed her to his bare torso bringing his mouth down to claim hers, thrusting his tongue into her mouth aggressively a low rumbling noise ripped from his throat. Fade’s hands skated over his overheated flesh, short nails gently scraping through the dark hair on his chest drawing rumbled noises of approval from the big man, her hands dropping ever lower, moulding to his abs, fingertips skating over the sensitive flesh topping his boxers under his knotted jumpsuit.
A small noise of aggravation left Fade when he dropped his hands from her body to grab her own, pulling them away from the sleeves of his jumpsuit that she’d just started to pull apart, chuckling at her reaction lightly he mumbled a teasing disproval “So eager for the Captain, aren’ ya Darl?”
If her eyes had been open Fade would have rolled them at him, there was no denying she was impatient. It had been sometime since she’d had anything more than her hands to keep her warm at night and she wasn’t even willing to do that right now with the pigs watching her every move on the ever present cameras.
When he dropped her hands, she reached for him again only to find herself suddenly constricted as Digger wrenched her own jumpsuit down her arms. The poppers holding it closed giving easily as he tugged the offending material down her body.
Twisting her arms free of the rough orange fabric, Fade’s hands closed around his biceps to steady herself as he ripped the garment down her body as far as he could, considering her position on her knees in front of him.
With a frustrated growl Digger broke away to frown down at her legs when he couldn’t remove the material completely, simply shoving her backwards her legs flipping out from under. Aiding him by lifting her hips he yanked the clothing from her body completely, chucking it over his shoulder into the same dark corner as his tank top.
Fade didn’t squeal at the sudden movement this time, but it did force a surprised giggle from her, his frown clearing now she was laid before him in only her own prison issue tank top and knickers. Digger licked his lips appreciatively, winking at her seductively as he knelt.
Rising onto her elbows with a questioning eyebrow arched at the man. Fade guessed his intent a second before he grabbed her legs and hauled her sharply towards him. Her body bouncing on the rusty cot, a surprised squeal issued from her matched by the springs protesting squeaks, until she came to a stop with her legs hanging over the end, feet now flat on the floor.
Placing his warm palms atop her knees he skated them upwards, leaving goosebumps in their wake, stopping only when his fingertips nudged at the elastic of her knickers. Thumbs hooking underneath the fabric to rub gentle circles over her sensitive flesh, so close and yet so far from where she wanted them. Fade clenched her hands into fists at her sides biting back a groan of annoyance, unwilling to give him the satisfaction, but he chuckled nonetheless. He could feel the tension in her muscles, see the way she shook as she prevented her back from arching off the thin mattress, the stress on her face as she fought to remain calm. He may have appeared calm, hands moving at a leisurely pace as he teased her, a man with all the time in the world but it had been some time for him too. Longer still since he’d had his hands on someone so responsive to his every touch, even as he teased her to distraction his control was being sapped, held in check only by sheer bloody mindedness and a stubborn refusal to be the one to break first.
Fade attempted to relax into his touches but the sparks shooting through her body with his every movement were proving hard to ignore, finally expelling a huff and a quiet whine “Stop being such a bloody tease!”
A triumphant grin played across his face, even as she glared down at him, once again propped up on her elbows though she too was smiling slightly. She was so touched starved every nerve ending was on fire with the tiniest movement, but she craved more.
Taking pity on them both Digger at last wrapped his fingertips around the side of her underwear bunching the material and pulling them swiftly down her legs. Once again lifting her hips and feet to help him, they too were tossed into the corner without a further thought.
With the barrier removed he pressed his bulk between her legs, forcing them apart with a hand on each knee, leering at her in a way that would make most women run for the hills, but Fade wasn’t most women, only finding his expression thrilling.
Still holding himself in check Digger leant forward slowly, bright eyes dark with lust boring into hers as she watched him. Turning his face at the last moment he deposited a chase kiss to her inner thigh, inadvertently brushing the hair of his mutton chops across her core pulling a delighted shudder from her with the contact.
Another dark chuckle rumbled from him as he repeated the action receiving the same reaction. Only when she huffed impatiently once more did he finally place his mouth exactly where she needed it. Licking a wide stripe through her folds pulling a high whimper from her with the motion.
Digger groaned repeating the action “Ya taste even sweeter than I expected Darl”
A metallic clanging from the door snapped them both out of their lust fuelled trance, the female guard stationed outside the man’s cell demanding attention.
Rearing back on his knees Digger glared the door barking a terse “What!” hands once against resting on fade’s knees.
Slumping back onto the bed with a quiet huff Fade attempted to stop her legs from quivering and control her breathing, resolved to do something nasty to the woman on the other side of the door at the next opportunity.
“What’s going on in there Harkness?” she barked through the metal.
“Talkin to me now are ya love? Thought you pigs just liked to watch the cameras?” Digger hollered back, turning his head slightly to wink at Fade, chuckling lightly at her murderous expression thought feeling no less annoyed by the interruption.
“The camera doesn’t seem to be working at the moment” Came the reply, the woman ignoring the insult.
“So, open the bloody door and look for yourself then! Ya don’ usually stand on ceremony do ya!”
There was a scuffling from the other side of the door and some muffled cursing that had Fade shaking with silent laughter hand clamped over her mouth to not give away her presence to the guards.
“The doors stuck!” the guard responded irritably.
“Well, what do ya want me to do about it? Don’t open from this side member, call maintenance or somethin” the man was starting to enjoy himself now pleased the woman was as frustrated as he was earlier.
The guard could be heard talking into her radio, unable to make out the exact words they could both tell she was repeating herself, getting more and more aggravated by the second. Digger looked round a wide grin on his face and he realised at the same time Fade did that the signal jammer must have taken out her radio as well.
“Dammit the radio’s out too” the woman shouted through the door “Stay put I’m going to have to go get Maintenance myself”
Digger snorted “Where the fuck dya think I’m gonna go?”
The was a pause followed by string of obscenities and the sound of boots as she stomped away down the corridor, leaving them alone in relative privacy.
“That was a bonus” Fade giggled, silently thanking Rick for making sure the jammer would cover just outside the cell as well, not doubting for one second it was deliberate.
“How long ya reckon we got till she gets back?” Digger questioned squeezing her tender flesh with his fingers, eyes locked on her exposed core as he licked his lips, the action making Fade Squirm in front of him.
“A good forty-five minutes I reckon. Maintenance is on the other side of the prison and they’re not quick as a general rule” she responded breathlessly.
“Good enough” he muttered, dropping back between her legs, and thrusting his tongue between her folds without preamble, lapping at her clit like a starving man.
“Fuck” Fade all but screamed, falling back onto the bed her back arching in pleasure as he licked and nibbled, sending sparks of pleasure and pain shooting through her body.
Slipping a finger into her core, her walls clenching at the intrusion, Digger groaned the vibrations against her sensitive core making Fade whimper even louder. Adding a second finger he plunged them into her over and over, immediately setting a frantic pace with his mouth firmly attached to her clit. Clutching at his unruly curls with one hand fingers wrapped tightly around his tresses she pulled another groan from the man with the painful yet pleasurable pressure she was exerting on his scalp.
It took almost no time at all for Fade to fall apart, crying name all traces of tension wiped from her body by his surprising skill. Through hooded eyes she watched Digger rise from the floor a satisfied smirk on his mouth along with her release. Swiping a hand across his mouth he made short work of his jumpsuit, pulling it down his muscular legs along with his boxers and stepping out of it towards her. Forcing her up the cost he followed her the spring objecting to the additional weight as he positioned between her legs above her.
Fade had barely had time to get an eyeful of his impressive length standing proud against his belly before he was on top of her, hands pushing her tank up and over her head, ripping her bra from her body with practised skill.
Palming a breast in his large hand, the other arm wrapped around her holding her tightly against his chest, lips falling to hers with a newfound urgency.
Fade whimpered at the onslaught to her senses, still dizzy from her previous climax and overwhelmed by the man above her in the most delicious way, her own hands clutching him to her as he invaded mouth with his tongue.
Releasing her breast Digger reached down between them, positioning himself so that the tip of his cock was pressed against her still quivering core.
Stilling suddenly, he wrenched their mouths apart with a disbelieving groan, Fade whined at the delay clutching at his shoulders and rolling her hips against him in encouragement.
“What’s the matter?” She murmured opening her eyes to see him frowning down at her.
“I don’ want to get ya into any trouble” he muttered, Fade’s lust drunk brain racing to catch his meaning, a mirthless chuckle bursting from her when she caught on.
Capturing his face in between her hands she smiled at him clarifying “You honestly think this didn’t occur to me before I came in here? How cruel do you think I am?... I have been so firmly irradiated I glow blue and walk-through walls. Trust me pregnancy is not an issue”
Both eyebrows shot up at her words but he then he nodded and grinned “Thank god for small mercy’s” slamming his length into her he drew a long-drawn-out moan of pleasure from them both as he filled her.
“Finally” Fade hissed relishing the feeling of being full of him, something she’d been daydreaming of since the moment she’d laid eyes on him outside Midway.
Clenching around him involuntarily she squeezed him so tightly that he groaned, forehead falling against hers, eyes shut tight as he went rigid in her arms “If you keep doin that, I’m not gonna last long love”
She chuckled in response and clenched around him deliberately, even harder than before rewarded with another groan from him “Best make it hard and fast then, I can always come back tomorrow for round two”
Leaning back slightly he opened his eyes, a smile spreading across his face as he realised there was nothing stopping them from doing this whenever they wanted, now they had the tools “Alright then darl, hold on ta somethin”
Drawing back, he pulled himself from her body and then slammed back into her hard enough to shift her up the protesting cot a little.
“You can do better than that” She challenged even as she whimpered.
With another dark chuckle he drew back and thrust into her even harder, hips snapping against hers harshly. Not pausing to let her recover he repeated the motion again, over and over until he was pounding her into the thin mattress.
The vulgar sounds of skin slapping against skin mixed with his grunts of pleasure serving to push Fade rapidly to the brink. Her back arching into him, breasts pressed against his chest, hands clutching at any part of him she could reach, a litany of prayers to deities she didn’t believe in falling from her lips.
A sharp gasp was the only warning either of them had when she reached the precipice and toppled over the edge. Waves of pleasure crashing over her body leaving her shaking in his arms, his own body reacting to her climax as he came deep inside her with a guttural groan, slamming his mouth onto hers to swallow her continuing moans as he pulsed within her.
They remained like that for as long as they darted risk, bodies intertwined, kissing gently, hands skating over the others overheated skin soothingly. Only separating reluctantly when they heard voices coming down the corridor towards Digger’s Cell.
Dressing quickly Digger pulled her back into his arms for another scorching kiss as the new arrivals started messing with the door.
Leaving him to discreetly remove the magnets from the door and keep them safe Fade murmured “See you tomorrow” as she slipped through the wall. Leaving the good Captain with a smug satisfied smile on his face humming a little tune to himself.
Hurrying through several walls she didn’t turn the signal jammer off until she was a good distance away, then returned to her own cell with a broad smile on her own face thinking of tomorrow.

You’re dancing in the bedroom alone while he stands in that door’s threshold. It isn’t long before he puts down his travel bag and crosses both arms, noticing you.
“Partying without me? Where’s the cooler, darling?” He chuckles to himself as soon as you glance over one shoulder and gape. The biggest smile reaches your face. You then cut off the music, almost running towards him.
As he embraces you for the first time in months, you’re short enough that your own face can only reach the middle of his clothed chest.
“Hey, Baby.” Smiling again, you look upward towards this beautiful man, hoping to notice those perfect hazel eyes once more. You’ve committed them to memory for the rest of your own life.
“Missed you.” He clips his words and lifts you in the bridal-style way, no longer allowing your steps to even move along that bedroom’s carpeted floor. That Southern drawl first killed you. Not to mention that an old-time charm lined his manners, rare nowadays.
“Missed you too.” You tell him right back. In an effort to keep holding him, you wrap both arms around his neck and lean inward, guiding his lips straight towards your own.
He’s home. Safe and sound. You think to yourself.

I'm a believer...
(Rick Flag x June Moone)
Tumblr media
Author's note: So, this is my first time writing something for Tumblr, or rather, something that isn't in an RP format, so I'm definitely not confident with this at all. After rewatching Suicide Squad, I got throw into such a moonflag mood, so I came up with... whatever this is. Enjoy?
-
For Rick Flag and June Moone, the Midway City mission had been an exhausting twenty four hours… A crazy twenty four hours, full of worry and fright. The Colonel spent his time dealing with trying to control a group of murderers and misfits, petrified he'd lose the love of his life if he couldn't pull this off. And there was June, tucked away in the witch's subconscious, equally as petrified that Rick would die at the witch's hand because there was nothing she could do about it. But both of them knew that there was so much more at stake her other than their relationship… The more the two of them thought about it though, they realised that neither one of them wished to live without the other, a fear of vulnerability if one of them were to go, neither one wanting to leave their first proper partner.
But thankfully, Enchantress had been defeated, and now they were finally safe and had each other. That was all that mattered.
As the squad left the subway station with Waller, Rick would hold June closer than ever; scared that if he were to let go, June would slip through his fingers once again. There wasn’t a lot of talking amongst the group… Of course the majority of them were all rather proud of themselves for saving the world and wanted to boast about it to each other, throwing around playful insults and banter, just simply enjoying each others company in this newly formed, close-knit family each of them now had. But with Waller appearing out of nowhere the way she did ruined the vibe for each of them. Because at the end of the day, she still had control over each of those bombs in their necks, and she really wouldn’t hesitate to set at least one of them off even now the shit show was over. Amanda was a reminder that none of them were free - not even Rick and June.
“Boomerang, you mind if June borrows your coat?” Rick took a glance over at the Australian as he broke the silence among the group. There was no way he was going to just let June walk out with barely any clothes on, and the way he saw it, it wasn’t like Harkness needed the damn thing anyway, as soon as they’d all get on a chinook back to Belle Reve, he’d be back in prison scrubs, bitching about being locked up once again. “Jesus Christ… Don’t worry, we’ll have it cleaned for whatever mission you get signed up for next. Just give her the damn thing...” Flag would say, a little bit annoyed by how Boomer seemed to have frowned at the request, so he wouldn't quite give the guy a choice. At the end of the day, Flag was still a bit wary about Harkness, they did have... history. And with Boomer being… Boomer, Flag would still forever see him as a liability regardless of whether the selfish idiot had a bomb in his neck or not. He wouldn't and couldn’t trust him fully. But setting their issues aside for a moment , Flag was actually grateful that Captain Boomerang gave up his coat and handed it over, but it wasn’t really just that he was grateful for… He would never openly admit it, but he was mainly grateful for him making the choice to rejoin the squad after they left The Golden Tree bar and headed for the station. George took part in helping him to save June. Without him, the group wouldn't have been able to locate the Incubus's position inside, and Rick wouldn't have had access to Enchantress' heart.
-
It would be a good couple of hours before the couple walked through the door of their hotel apartment hand in hand. And as soon as the door was shut behind them, June would hang up the alcohol and sweat smelling thick leather coat on the hooks on the wall opposite her and head right for the bathroom, once Rick’s boots were undone and kicked off, he would follow behind. There was a comfortable silence between the two of them, they didn't really need to speak.
Once the two of them were in the bathroom, they stripped each other down, desperately wanting to get the dirt off and the gross clothes they wore, wanting to just relax under the warmth of the water. As they got in and the shower was turned on, Rick took a glance at the side of her face as she began to budge the dirt out of her hair with her hands. To him, June was the pure definition of beauty, her features looked like they'd been carved so delicately by angels. He loved the softness of her voice, the way her fingers were always smooth as they'd glide down his back when she held him… Damn, he really thought the world of her…
Thinking back to something he'd said to Floyd before the squad came face to face with Enchantress, he decided he meant every word he said. He didn't see love as a real thing, he rated it with UFOs and all that impossible crap, he never had seen any proof of it, until he met her. His June... That's when his mind would change for good, that was the moment when he would become a believer. He couldn't help his next movements, he would come in from behind and wrap his arms around her waist, dipping his head so he could press light kisses on her left shoulder. Rick had no intentions behind it other than to love on her, he simply wanted to take a moment to truly appreciate her and soak in just how lucky he felt that she loved him in return.
They took their time, but finally, the two of them would dry up and leave to the bedroom to dress themselves. Rick going for nothing but some long, dark blue cotton pants, and June wearing one of his t-shirts and a pair of her usual underwear. Now they were both comfortable, he'd sit June at the dressing unit by the window in their shared bedroom. He'd stand behind her, reaching over to grab both the hair dryer and hairbrush that was left on the surface. Rick may have come across as a complete asshole to everyone else, but when it came to June, he was softer, loving even. He left the soldier at the door and found himself wanting to love and look after her, so he'd taken to drying her hair and brushing it through every once in a while. With June's long, soft, dirty blonde hair, Rick would happily brush and play with it for hours on end if she'd let him. It just provided him such comfort… "You alright there, soldier?" June's voice would pull him from his thoughts, making him look through the mirror at her as he stood there. "Yeah... Yeah, I'm good, real fuckin' tired though."
"That I don't doubt. You've been a busy man…" June's voice would quieten as she'd watch his reflection, "Rick… I want to really thank you." she'd say just as he'd lean over to the left to plug in the hair dryer. Rick would stop a moment before turning and looking at her properly. His expression was blank, but only for a moment, he didn't know why but her saying such simple words took him aback. "You don't have to thank me…" He'd answer with a soft shrug, trying to act casual about it. "There ain't nothin' I wouldn't do for you. You know that."
"I'm serious, Rick." And with her saying that, he couldn't help the small smile that crept up on his face. "Yeah, I know. And so am I." Once he'd plug in the hair dryer, the exhaustion would creep up on him fast, forcing him to yawn. Covering his mouth with his hand to mask the yawn, he'd see her stand out of the corner of his eye and he soon felt her right arm around him, pulling him in the direction of the bed behind them. "Alright, soldier. I think it's bedtime, don't you?" He'd place down the hairdryer and willingly be pulled to the bed, far too tired to protest like he usually would.
Once June sat herself down and rested against the headboard, she'd pat her lap and hold her arms out to him, waiting. Rick would of course go to her, laying himself down on the mattress and resting his head on her lap. His now droopy hazel eyes looking up at her, soaking up as much of her face as he could see. It wasn't long before he felt himself drifting away on her, but he was determined to keep his eyes open. The Colonel couldn't settle... Yes, her lap was more than just comfortable and she was warm, but he didn't feel safe... Given that he'd taken all of his firearms with him to Midway, there was no longer a handgun on the nightstand at the side of his bed anymore, and that simply made him feel uneasy. He'd spent every night sleeping beside a gun for months on end just in case the witch decided to attack. But no matter how much Rick would try to extinguish that worry and tell himself he shouldn't have to worry anymore, that it was just him and June now and forever, there was still a fear in the back of his mind that Enchantress would return, thirsty for revenge with every intention to do the very same thing he did to her… crush his heart.
June knew what was going through his mind, she knew exactly why he was fighting sleep, so once she began to massage his scalp with her small fingertips, she'd whisper, "Baby… it's going to be okay. She isn't going to come back, I promise. She's gone for good. You saved me from her…" Looking down at him, she knew she couldn't blame him for feeling such a way, this wasn't the most comfortable thing for her either. So she would continue to quietly reassure him, doing all she could to get him to take a well deserved rest, as the poor soldier hadn't had a decent sleep in months… Now it was time to finally rest. And thankfully, it wasn't long until he gave in and let sleep take him in. June's voice was enough to convince him, it wasn't the words she spoke. It was just her voice, and just her voice alone.
Despite the worrying over the now impossible, Colonel Stick-Up-His-Ass had finally found refuge in someone, and now he knew that there was no way she'd be taken away from him, he couldn't have been happier… He was free to admit that he was a believer.

October/Early November Story Prompt 3: Crying and Grief with Minor Revenge
Warning: This story contains Death and Sadness
Words: 786
Ship: Rick Flag/F!OC
Before reading this story, I just wanna say that this story introduces a certain character that I've been wanting to do for a while now, and I'm glad to announce that this character is in this story. 😍
And here's the actual story down below 👇🏽
They'd come in late while staying in the back under the shadows of the trees like a vampire during the daylight as the service progressed.
It was a beautiful funeral after all.
All the chatter and praises among families and military officials are very well deserved.
She, on the other hand, wouldn't like it regardless of how much attention she received, and how deeply protected she was with the country. She wouldn't feel it was worth it after getting murder by another traitor in Task Force X. She had to protect her boss/secret admirer from that back-stabber who was planning on assassinating him, especially after Waller found out that he miraculously survived his fatal stabbing in Jotunheim. Nobody knew how he came back to life with only him knowing what happened.
Now, it was time for him to mourn for her.
His vision is still blurry from his tears as he wanders into her apartment. The place looked pretty clean with the expectation of gifts and "We Will Miss You" cards scattered in the living room.
He enters her bedroom as he begins to sob uncontrollably. He sinks down to her bed as he weeps his heart out.
"Why do you continue to mourn her?"
The Enchanter questions from the reflection in the bedroom mirror. He still had that sexy charming "sweetheart" vibe on as he still dons that white loincloth that shows off his thick body.
"Why bring us here? Making our hurt worse. You don't even know the girl."
The warlock prods are more curious than truly annoyed.
"Fuck off," Rick snapped as he takes out his handkerchief to wipe his eyes and nose.
He then goes to her closet to find that uniform she always wear. He needed to smell that Lavender scent she had. Or was it Japanese Cherry Blossom? Either way he needed that scent of hers for remembrance. The scent was smelling faint as he tried his hardest to catch that faint aroma.
Maybe he was right. He doesn't know her.
I mean, there are some things he remembers about her like her favorite coffee being White Chocolate, her love of dark colors, her habit of holding people's hands while walking, her loving the smell of cologne, or her nice little hugs she gives to him in any mood. He remembers how she gives him food that looks so unhealthy for him yet it was his secret weakness, and personally appreciates it. She was the nicest girl he has ever met, and now she's gone.
He needed to remember her, even if it's the littlest things he could remember like her natural smell.
He could feel the Enchanter growing restless in the back of his mind, but he pushed his 'other half' away for now as he once more buried his face in his dead admirer's uniform to hide his tears. He recalled that last hug being so warm and necessary that he knew that she loved him without needing to say it.
"She took her from us."
It was the first time the Enchanter had shown anything other than disgust, anger, and feared curiosity when it came to Rick Flag's secret admirer. Was he really caring about Rick's own love for her?
"She had wanted to help me, and I can't believe I took the bait again," he recalls with a broken sob. "I'm so fucking stupid."
Enchanter sighs at him.
"So what? We take our revenge on them," the warlock insisted. "They took what was ours. They deserve to feel our pain."
Rick looks up, catching the reflection of his other half in the mirror. Enchanter put his muscular arms around his chest which is an odd yet surprising show of attempted comfort from a Warlock.
"She wouldn't want that," Rick admitted.
"She'd want those responsible to be held accountable for what they did," Enchanter growled as he reminded him.
His reflected hand smoothing down Rick's dirty blonde hair as they held eye contact through the help of the mirror's reflection.
He nods once in quiet agreement as the comforting scent he'd thought he'd lost tickled his nose once more. It was Japanese Cherry Blossom.
"You know you're making me jealous with your good looks," Enchanter admitted.
"Oh please," Rick responded. "I wish I had your body and looks. You look more shredded than me."
Enchanter giggled as he replied, "Well, maybe I could eat a bunch of bodies, and souls to make me fat and sloppy, and you look more stunning."
"Maybe we could bond some more soon?"
Enchanter nodded as he promised, "Yes, we should. It'll be fun."
Rick smiled as he nodded.
"You should rest now, Colonel," Enchanter coaxes. "Tomorrow we take our revenge."

» ❛ fun lil’ trivia about the flags ༉‧₊˚
Irene and the twins have an eight-year age gap!
Richie’s full name is Richard Flag the Third.
Although identical, Richie has certain mannerisms that resemble his father. The same case applies to Ethan, the younger twin, who picks up more of your quirks. Despite that, Richie, usually the photographer of the group, encourages (and even adds to) Ethan’s odd photo ideas.
Sporty ahh kids. All three of them. Need I say more?

Off Course
Rick Flag x Reader
Plot: Rick does everything in his power to find you, even if it means going off course again.
A/N: Research recruitment is stressing me out so... here is the product of my stress? Please excuse my brain as I wrote this in one go🤡
Genre: PG-13
Tumblr media
"I have to find her, Harley." Rick packs the last of his belongings into a backpack, putting a cap on his head. "It's because of me, she's missing. Please understand."
She twirls her strawberry-blonde hair, following him like a lost puppy. As Rick prepares to leave, she plants herself in front of the door, arms outstretched.
"Harley..."
"I'm not stopping you from leaving, stupid." She says as if it's the most obvious thing in the world. "When you find her, you'll need this," She places the rumpled picture into this hand.
"Thank you."
"Hey, anything for a friend."
***
Kowloon, Hong Kong
It's difficult, but Rick succeeds anyways. No one knows that he disobeyed orders to carry out a mission on his own. He slips through the bustling crowd, carefully navigating his way around according to the intel given by a local contact he met two days ago.
Laughter fills his ears and he sees couples and families lining the street stalls. He can't lose focus now.
Turning into a smaller alleyway, he continues straight before hitting a dead end. He compares the photo with the run-down shop. Rick hopes that he'll get results.
Pushing the door open with a loud creek, he can't help but shiver at the sight of stained blood painted on the walls. It didn't matter if it used to be a butcher shop, there was something sinister about this place.
Rick sees a set of stairs that lead to the basement. His soldier instincts are screaming for him to retreat but he moves towards it. If there's any chance... he has to take it.
As he descends the stairs, Rick strains his ears to alert him of any activity. He hears a couple of weak whimpers.
Drawing out his service weapon, he raises it in front, preparing himself for whatever he was about to find.
"Please... I have children... I won't tell anyone about this if you let me go."
Rick waits in hiding and sees a pudgy figure stepping out in an apron. He forces himself to stay calm at the sight of the pig mask that the man was wearing.
"Pyg will make you perfect again... Pyg will rid of all imperfections!"
What a psycho.
Rick's had enough. He starts to make a move from his hiding place. He clicks his gun, before putting it to the man's head.
"Drop it before I blow your sorry brains out."
The Professor snorts, breaking out into uncontrollable wheezing. Rick forces the tip of the gun on his temple, showing that he meant business. Oh hell, what was he even doing here? He shouldn't be making the same mistake again.
A man that couldn't turn a blind eye to people in need of help.
"What a pleasure to finally meet the Colonel himself in the flesh!" Pyg squeals. "How about I introduce you to my children?"
Rick finds himself being hit squarely in the jaw by one of Pyg's victims. He forces the image of what the demented psychopath has done to them. He had bigger issues at hand. Sure, they were lobotomized but they were still civilians. He couldn't make a move.
"Heads up!"
A black figure zooms from above before kicking the Professor in the head, knocking him unconscious.
"Looks like I'm late to the party again."
Rick is given a pistol.
"They’re pellets that I designed. Enough to knock them out but it won't kill them."
The Colonel didn't need an invitation. Together, the two had swiftly taken out every hostile with ease. Soon, he stands over a pile of unconscious bodies. The mystery person gets off the phone and Rick moves toward them. Maybe they have some clues.
"Hey, thank you for saving me back there." The person looks at him impassively through their mask. Rick feels at a loss but he has to try anyways, he has wasted too much time deviating off course. He thought he would find you here.
"I was trying to find someone but I ended up in this mess," he gestures, chuckling a little at his current predicament. "I was hoping you could help me to find this person." Rick proceeds to take the photo from his pocket-
"You mean this girl?" The person holds up the familiar photo.
"What? How did you?"
The person removes their mask, and Rick is frozen on the spot. You stand in front of him, heavily battle-scared, tears rolling down your cheeks.
"You dumbass." You sniffled. "You could never walk away from a person in need could you?"
Rick snaps out of his shock, striding over to give you a big embrace. He buries himself into the crook of your neck, refusing to let you go. He is afraid that if he tries to see your face, you'll disappear.
"I'm sorry." He apologizes. "I'm so sorry... if I didn't leave you back then..."
"Rick, I'm here." You gently look into his eyes. "I'm not going anywhere." Dredging up old memories that would only hurt both of you was useless. Besides, you never blamed him. In fact-
"I knew you would come and find me eventually."
The sound of sirens pierced through the air. You turn to him and smile.
“Perhaps we should take this somewhere else. We do have a lot to catch up on, don’t we?”

Admittance Is the First Step (Rick Flag x F!Reader)
Tumblr media
Main Master List       DC Master List
Requested by @11thstreetvigilante : “What you see in me is what I want to see in myself” with Rick? ❤️
Warnings: Alcohol consumption, language, talk of death ideation, Rick is depressed, reader is in love, angst with happy ending
Word Count: 1.4k
----------
Rick grimaces as he chugs the drink down, setting the empty glass on the bar and signaling for the tender to fill it up for the fifth time. It’s nine o'clock on a Tuesday and he could swear that he’s the only one in the bar save for the local prostitute hanging out in the back.
“Thought I would find you here,” you set your bag down on the counter as you slide into the seat next to Rick, placing an order for a gin and tonic to the bartender who immediately gets to work on the drink. “Thought you would be heading home by now.”
“Can’t.” Rick doesn’t miss the way you cock your head to the side, confusion written all over your face but with him not providing any more details you decide not to press the issue. It’s always like this whenever he comes home from a mission. He will put the prisoners back in their cell, finish up whatever report he needed to do for Waller and then drink away his sorrows immediately after, which has led to many late night phone calls for you to pick him up, except this time he didn’t call, it was a gut feeling.
Sighing, you scroll through your phone in silence. On the nights like tonight where he’s locked himself up in a bar, he typically doesn’t do much talking and you know he would rather drink in quietness than in noise and you can’t say you blame him, after all, some down time is definitely needed after dealing with people like Digger Harkness and Harley Quinn.
Rick will never admit it, but he doesn’t want to be sitting in silence. He wants to be able to talk to you, tell you all about the mission as you lend an ear where he can talk to you honestly and without the ears of Waller and her lackeys. He doesn’t know why he trusts you as much as he does, afterall, anybody who works for Waller obviously does not care for their life, but for some reason, Rick feels like he can trust you with anything. Maybe it’s because you’re always there to patch him up after a mission gone south, or maybe it’s the way that you’ll stay with him in the darkest parts of the night when he can’t sleep, or maybe it’s the way you have always said positive things to him in an attempt to soothe him.
“Lost 4 people today.” The words are quiet and if the bar was noisy, you probably wouldn’t have heard them, but you did and your heart drops. One of the many things that you love about Rick is that even though all those felons have committed several heinous crimes against humanity, he still showed them human kindness despite the rest of the prison staff treating them like scum. “Could’ve been avoided if I had only listened to Waller instead of my own gut.” Rick picks up the glass and drinks the amber liquid in a second. If it burned going down, he made no notion of it. “I should’ve listened.”
“You took a risk, Rick. Not all of them are going to pay off, but you got the remainder of the team back to safety and you got yourself to safety and that’s the most important thing.”
Rick scoffs as he leans forward on the bar counter top, turning his head to the side and eyeing you up and down, dressed in your normal clothes. “You know, sometimes I wish I don’t make it back at all. I sometimes wish that I’ll die or be kidnapped on a mission just so I don’t have to face everybody after another failed mission.” The admittance stops your heart. Sure Rick gets depressed after missions, it’s hard not to, but you have never heard him say that he “wishes to die”, not once, not ever.
“You take those words back. You have no clue how much you mean to these prisoners.” To me, you think to yourself as he rolls his eyes and glances down at the empty glass, tugging his bottom lip between his teeth as he muses over his words.
“What would even happen if I die? Pretty sure Waller would find someone to cover my spot and that’s that. Would anyone even shed a tear? I work day and night, I go home to an empty apartment, I have no one in my life that I care to share joy with. I mean I have been living at the prison so much that the only thing in my fridge is a case of beer and pizza from two weeks ago.”
Holding the tears at bay, you slip out of your seat and slip your arms around his waist, nuzzling your face into his back as you sniffle. How can he really not notice the way you care for him? How can he not notice the way he makes life for the prisoners so much better? “You’re so fucking stupid, Richard.”
Rick freezes in his chair. “Excuse me?” He turns around in your grasp as you let go of him, crossing your arms across your chest as if you’re hugging yourself.
“How the fuck can you not notice how much you mean to the squad?”
“They don’t care about me. They only care about getting time off their sentences.” You shake your head in disagreement, wiping tears out of your eyes as Rick raises an eyebrow. Why is she crying?
“Rick, stop kidding yourself, you know that’s not true. Think about all the times they have gone back for you because they know you would go back for them. Even though they’re assholes, they adore you. But beside the point, how the fuck can you not notice how much you mean to me?” All is quiet in the bar as the bartender and prostitute watch on in entertainment and in curiosity as to what’s going on. “I love you, Rick. I love your smile, I love your eyes, I love your voice, I love the way you command people, I love your terrible terrible jokes, I love the way you doodle on my notebook periodically even if I can’t make out what it is sometimes. I love the way you help others, I love the way you put yourself on the line for innocents, I love the way you don’t let people talk shit about your squad, I love the way you trust me enough to open up about your day, I love the way you allow yourself to be vulnerable around me, and I really love the way you’re yourself when you’re around me. I love you, Rick Flag, and I am not going to let you talk about wanting to ‘die’ or wanting to be ‘kidnapped’ because if something happened to you, I just know I would not survive.”
Rick doesn’t make a comment on your monologue and a little part of your mind is eating away in denial that he’ll return the feelings. Rick’s lip twitches upward for a second as he looks to the floor, finding his shoes all of the sudden fascinating as he takes in your words. He supposes he’s always known about your feelings, but now with them out in the open, he knows that he feels the same way about you. “What you see in me is what I want to see in myself.”
Your eyes soften as you take a step forward, unlocking your arms as they fall to your side awkwardly, not knowing really what to do with them as a thought pops into your mind. “Then let me show you. Move in with me.”
“What?”
“Move in with me. I have plenty of space at my house. That way you will always be able to come home to a warm, inviting house with a warm meal cooked for you, so that you’re not living off cheap beer and stale pizza. Let me show you just how much I adore you. Let me help you start to believe that about yourself, because Rick, you are so much more than you think. Please let me show you that.”
“I’d take her up on her offer,” the bar tender quips, polishing a glass as the prostitute listens in with eagerness as Rick hangs his head. She does have a point, you could use somebody like her in your life. You could use a companion outside the office.”
“Ok. I’ll move in with you, and (Y/N)?”
“Yeah?”
“Thank you.”

Ignore this if you’ve already done 91. “Don’t go on that date.” “Why?” “You know why.” “Say it.” With Takeshi kovscs or rick flag- your choice! Babs :)
The Business of Misery | Rick Flag x Reader
Tumblr media
A/N: Thank you for the request @babblydrabbly 💖 I was in the mood for some Rick angst this evening!
Warnings: None
Word Count: 1,206 words
Tumblr media
It’s all anyone in the office can talk about. Rick Flag has a date tonight. You chew the end of your pen miserably, trying to drown out the sound of your colleagues taking bets on whether or not he’ll sleep with her. The conclusion, much to your chagrin, seems to be a resounding yes - it’s the new girl working on reception, after all - and in the words of John Economos: “have you seen her? Flag would be mad not to hit that.”
Hearing John’s crude comment, you chew through the pen with more force than necessary, cracking the plastic with your teeth and causing blue ink to leak all over your fingers.
“Shit.”
You push the chair out from beneath the desk, ignoring the curious glances tossed your way as you hurry out of the office and head to the bathroom. As if the day wasn’t already off to a terrible start...
Unfortunately, before reaching your destination you fly head first into a broad and solid chest. Large hands grip your shoulders firmly, steadying you, and as you peel yourself away from the human-shaped obstacle, you find yourself staring up into a familiar pair of hazel eyes.
“What the hell happened to you?” Rick raises an amused brow at the sight of your stained fingers.
“Got into a fight with a ball-point,” you grumble, attempting to side step the Colonel. He seems unusually chipper this morning, thanks no doubt to his upcoming date.
“Better the pen than Harcourt this time, eh?” He smirks, one hand still resting on your shoulder as you purposely ignore his joke. You and Emilia have never seen eye to eye, a fact that everyone working on Task Force X is well aware of.
“Do you mind?” You gesture towards the bathroom door, equally as keen to wash the ink from your hands as you are to get away from Rick.
He releases you, but not without a concerned look flashing across his handsome face. You hate the man’s ability to get inside your head. Even now, it feels like he can read your thoughts from a single glance. For both of your sakes, you hope that’s not the case. Studiously avoiding those hazel eyes now, you slip past him and into the sanctuary of the bathroom.
When you return, hands no longer stained blue, you’re more than a little disgruntled to find Rick waiting exactly where you left him.
“What?” you snap, not bothering to hide the venom in your voice.
You have to give him credit, he doesn’t so much as flinch at your tone. You suppose it's a skill that comes from working under Waller, not to mention the fact that having nerves of steel is pretty much an essential requirement around the prison. Considering everything he has to deal with, one pissed off ex is probably the least of Rick’s concerns right now.
“Somethin's botherin’ you, darlin’.”
You bristle at the pet name and that smooth southern drawl. “Firstly, don’t call me that. Not anymore. Secondly, it’s none of your business.”
He takes a step towards you, his large body towering over you in that way that still makes your pulse quicken.
“Tell me what’s wrong.”
“What makes you assume anything is wrong?”
“Cos you’re lookin’ even more murderous than normal.” His voice softens, almost imperceptibly. “Do I need to kick someone’s ass?”
If only he knew the truth. Would he kick his own ass, you wonder.
“Don’t you think you lost the right to jump to my defence when we broke up?”
Arching an eyebrow in his direction, you calculate how quickly you can make it back to the safety of your office. Rick won’t dare continue this confrontation with others around.
“Darlin’-”
Shifting your weight uncomfortably from one foot to the other, you focus on a spot over his shoulder, anything to avoid those goddamn eyes. “I told you, don’t call me that. Why do you have to make this even harder than it already is?”
“What are you talkin’ about?”
“Is it not enough that I have to hear about your love life from those idiots?” You point towards the office door. “You can’t just go around calling me ‘darlin’’ like nothing has changed.”
Rick’s face falls, but you refuse to acknowledge the tiniest amount of guilt prickling at the periphery of your conscience.
“Why don’t you tell me what I’m s'posed to do, then? Huh?” His gaze travels over you, confusion and pain etched in the lines of his face. “I ain’t just ignorin’ you every time we cross paths in these corridors. And I'm sorry if that don’t suit you, but as for my love life - you ended things with me, remember?”
Of course you remember. How could you forget? You’d grown tired of keeping your relationship a secret. Rick had insisted on hiding it from Waller, fearing that as her number one analyst she’d use your relationship as leverage over him. It seems that same fear doesn’t extend to Sally - or whatever her name is - on reception. You can’t pretend it doesn’t sting.
“I don’t want you to do anything, Rick,” you sigh. “In fact, I just want you to leave me alone.”
It’s a lie. A big, fat one. And of course, Rick sees right through it. He folds his arms, staring you down intently. “Tell me the truth, and I’ll leave you be. What’s got you so worked up? Is this about me goin’ out with Suzie tonight?”
Hearing confirmation of the date from Rick’s own mouth causes your chest to tighten; it’s no longer simply idle office gossip.
“I don’t give a shit what you do, Rick.”
A muscle in his jaw ticks. “I think we both know that’s not true. Tell me what you’re really thinkin’ right now. I dare you.”
“What I’m really thinking?” You can feel your face burning with a mixture of fear and frustration as Rick continues to stare at you, an infuriatingly relaxed expression settling across his fine features. “OK. Don’t go on that date.”
As soon as you’ve said the words, you wish you could take them back, hating the fact that he now knows just how much it’s affecting you.
His brow quirks up, but he doesn’t break your gaze, replying with a simple, “why?”
A beat passes before you answer. Except for the sound of your pulse ringing in your ears, a heavy silence hangs in the air. When you finally speak, your voice is an octave higher than before. “You know why.”
“Say it.”
Even if you wanted to, you couldn't hold back the words any longer. “Because I still love you.”
Rick closes the distance between you in a single stride, taking you firmly by the waist. “Good, because I never stopped lovin’ you either.”
Before you can draw another breath his lips are on yours, and he’s kissing you in that way of his that makes your heart soar, in that way that makes you feel like both of your lives depend on it – perhaps they do.
When he finally pulls away, cupping your cheek, his lips drift to you ear and he murmurs softly, “There never was a date tonight. Don’t you know that you’re the only one I’ll ever want? The only one I’ll ever need.”

Sweet Revenge
Rick Flag/Reader
Fictober Day 4 of 31
Words: 1,140
Summary: Weeks after your almost-kiss, you and Rick finally get a chance to talk, but you’re not going to let him off easy.
Note: This is intended to be a second part to this fic!!
Rick Flag Masterlist
Tumblr media
The punching bag barely moved as you hit it, eyes staring blankly ahead as you tried to release your frustrations.
“What you did out there…”
“Incredibly stupid and reckless.”
You couldn’t stop replaying that moment over and over in your head, the moment where you were sure that Rick Flag was going to kiss you for the first time, where instead he pulled away and left you looking like an idiot. You had succeeded in your mission, you had made it out of the enemy base alive, so there was no reason for him to act like that around you.
You slammed the punching bag once more, it swung farther out this time. The gloves on your hands blocked you from feeling most of the impact, and you were panting and sweating from your many attempts to get the frustration of your almost kiss with Rick out of your head.
Right as you were about to throw another punch, a voice interrupted your thoughts. “Something on your mind?”
Of course it had to be him. The universe had a particularly unique way of making you miserable, didn’t it? “What are you doing here?” you asked, your words a little angrier than you meant to make them.
“I wanted to see you,” he said smoothly, leaning against the wall. With his tight shirt and sly smile, you couldn’t help the little nudging feeling of attraction. “It’s been a while since we got to talk.”
You hadn’t technically been avoiding him, but your schedules happened to differ quite substantially for the past few weeks, which was a blessing and a curse. It was good because you didn’t have to deal with him directly in the days after your almost kiss, but at the same time you still hadn’t talked about it, hence why you were still annoyed and frustrated enough to need to train with the punching bag for a while. “I’m busy right now,” you said, hoping your clipped tone would scare him off.
“You’ve been training for the past hour down here.” You glared at him. “Come on, at least spar with me then.”
Sensing that he probably wasn’t going to leave you alone, you traded the gloves on your hands for tape and followed him over to the corner of the training area, where mats had been laid out and attached to the wall for training sessions. It wasn’t rare for you to spar with someone, but it would be the first time you sparred with Rick.
He blocked your first swing easily. “Is that all you’ve got?”
“You can’t handle all I’ve got,” you taunted, raising an eyebrow at him.
“Oh really? I’d like to be the judge of that myself, thank you.”
It was shocking, how easy it was for you two to slip into this quasi-flirting relationship. You wanted to be mad at him for the way he tricked you last time, but at the same time, there wasn’t much to fault him on. Other than being a dick move, you weren’t in a relationship with him, and he had never indicated that it was something he had wanted to pursue. You just happened to catch feelings for him, and it wasn’t his fault if he didn’t reciprocate.
He may have been larger than you, but you had speed as an advantage. You weren’t weak either, and you were able to land a few good hits on him using feints and other tricks. You were still at a slight disadvantage, but it wasn’t too much that you weren’t willing to try and fight for the upper hand.
At one point he grabbed you, pulling you back so that your back was up against his chest and his hands were on your hips. You struggled slightly, but his grip was firm, and you were slightly distracted by the position. He was so warm, and you could feel the heat pooling in your body as he leaned in close and whispered “do you give up yet?” with his breath just barely ghosting over your ear.
You weren’t an idiot, you knew this had to be some kind of set up to repeat last time, but you weren’t going to fall for it. In fact, you started to hatch a plan of your own. Sending an elbow into his abdomen, you were able to break free, but your distraction didn’t allow you too much time. That didn’t matter though, it still put you exactly where you needed to be in order for your idea to work.
He stepped forward, you stepped back, and you back was now against the padded wall of the training area, your chest and his almost touching. He wasn’t too close that he restrained your movement, and you could see the gears turning in his head when you smiled. “Why would I give up?” you asked. “I’ve got you exactly where I want you, you know.”
“And where is that?”
You leaned in closer, having to push yourself up a little to be able to reach his lips, and your voice came out hushed and breathy when you spoke. “Within kissing distance.”
This was it, the moment you had waited for, planned for. Right as he leaned in closer, you used your leg to trip him, at the same time grabbing his arms and turning so you were pushing him back against the wall. The smirk on your face was clear as day, and once he realized that this was your plan all along, he practically growled.
There was just one thing you hadn’t counted on, and it was him grabbing your waist and yanking you close to him, his lips on yours in a bruising kiss as he held you tight. There was no way to escape, but you didn’t want to. His kiss was intoxicating, and for a fleeting moment you wondered what the hell was happening, but at the same time the voice in your head was a little distracted.
When you finally broke apart, you were both panting, and you could see his lips were slightly swollen (you were sure yours looked the same way). “If you did this just to win-” you started to speak, but he cut you off.
“Darlin’, I could have easily won without this,” he said, a smile on his face. “I was just really tired of not being able to kiss you.”
“Well, why didn’t you do it earlier than, colonel?”
“Because I thought I could resist you.”
“Resist me?”
“Yeah,” he said, leaning down to pepper kisses on your cheeks and eventually moving down to your neck. You leaned back ever-so-slightly, trying not to let out a rather impolite sound as he kissed your skin, his hands still on your waist. “And I’ve never been so happy to be wrong in my entire life.”

I think every member of the Suicide Squad is a warning all by themselves but to be clear there will be violence, swearing, a complete lack of morals or ethics of any kind at times. Spoilers!

It was a sombre group that made its way back down to the lobby of the building, in yet another crazy turn of events Harley was gone and so was her Puddin’. As Fade had predicted the Joker had come for his queen, no one and nothing was going to get in his way. Lawton had surprisingly come through for his new friends, refusing to kill the woman even as she flew away from them. Fade was grateful but it hadn’t been enough to save her from Waller’s wrath, the fact that the woman’s chopper went down minutes later was poetic justice, but just meant that this never-ending nightmare of a mission wasn’t over.
Fade wasn’t even aware of the tears rolling silently down her cheeks, she only knew that her heart was broken over the loss of her oldest friend.
Digger wrapped an arm around her shoulder keeping her close as they made their way out onto the street, she was grateful for the warmth and the comfort. The man had pulled her to her feet and forced her to keep putting one foot in front of the other, without it she felt she might keel over at any moment.
The rainfall mirrored her misery beautifully, the water falling on her face to wash away her grief leaving an open wound gaping in her chest. She was so lost to it that she didn’t hear Digger quietly saying her name or notice that he was pointing to something a short distance from them until she heard a voice calling out “Hey guys’ I’m back! Did you miss me? I missed you all so much”
Eyes snapping round to the source Fade broke away from Digger, bolting towards the soaking wet and shivering blonde perched atop the black car. Jumping up onto the hood as Harley slid down the windshield into her waiting arms, each woman clutching the other to her.
Fade relieved to find her friend still alive, Harley seeking comfort against the sting of loss.
Rick paused wanting to give them a moment, but they needed to keep moving, catching his eye and nodding at him over Harley’s shoulder Fade pulled back, the women breaking apart with a quiet sniff and reddened eyes. Digger reached out a hand to help Fade down, not trusting her footing in her current state, rewrapping a protective arm around her once more as Lawton pulled Harley into his arms and set her gently on the ground “We’re glad you could make it”
Digger offered the woman a small smile as he attracted her attention “Hey craziness” tossing her the bat he’d snagged from the roof.
Fade held out her hand to the woman Harley lacing her fingers through hers, falling into step with the pair of them, as a trio they wended their ungainly way along the street following the course Rick laid out for them.
***
Fade wasn’t sure how long it took to find the downed chopper, but she was feeling far more herself by the time it came into sight, though a lot wetter than usual. Digger was no longer wrapped around her but had checked she was ok before he moved off, now walking with Diablo and Croc a short distance ahead. Her friend had merely raised an eyebrow when he’d left them alone, but not asked any questions. She was intrigued to understand what was going on, if anything, between her friend and the big Aussie, but it was all too painful to think about when she’d just lost the love of her life. Fade was grateful for her silence on the subject, she wouldn’t know how to answer her questions anyway. She couldn’t deny she found the man attractive, and he’d made it clear he thought she was too, but what intrigued her was that while his personality was abrasive on the surface, there seemed to be something more underneath. He was definitely a puzzle, but one she would have to figure out another time, right now her friend needed her.
Harley hadn’t said anything about what had transpired after she left them on the roof, but Fade knew that just meant she was still processing it. Just from the simple fact that the woman wasn’t gambling about like a bunny on crack told Fade she was hurting, especially as she hadn’t let go of her hand since they’d left the building behind. Fade kept her silence too, letting Harley deal with it in her own way but squeezing her hand gently from time to time to remind her that she was there, an answering squeeze telling her that she was doing the right thing.
They hung back as Rick and Alpha team inspected the chopper with Lawton, declaring Waller missing and moving out once again. Once again Lawton and Rick seemed to be disagreeing about their next course of action, though she felt he had a point this time. Heading directly to the source of the swirling ring of trash in the sky did seem blatantly idiotic, but they were also out of options.
The rain bucketing down out of the sky was obscuring visibility and generally making things more miserable than they needed to be, thankfully the rain itself wasn’t icy but being drenched to the skin wasn’t a pleasant experience. Faces screwed up against the driving rain no one noticed that Lawton wasn’t with them until the binder hit the car next to Rick, the clearly incensed man shouting at him to tell them all the truth.
What was left of Alpha squad and the task force gathered curiously, even Fade finally locating some interest in this evening’s events.
She watched Rick closely the man looked ready to snap, more defeated than she’d ever seen him before, stepping towards him his gaze snapped up to hers. The concern etched on her features finally breaking through to him, nodding he cleared his throat, a long overdue explanation finally forthcoming.
“Three days ago, a non-human entity appeared in the subway station. Waller sent me and a woman with incredible abilities… a witch. See nobody could get near this thing but the witch could” Fade frowned, the man looked on the verge of tears but she didn’t understand why, he had a personal stake in this that was yet to be revealed, that much was clear to her “Needless to say…” he continued “The whole thing was a bad idea, that’s how she escaped from Waller” He gritted his teeth glaring at Lawton levelling him with a ferocious look, sneering at the man “So now you know”
Fade looked at Lawton the man nodding along as Rick spoke eyes on the floor, finally lifting his head to declare “You can just kill me right now…” looking round he pointed to the building next to them, Fade glancing up to see it was some kind of trendy wine bar “But I’m going to have a drink”
He strode away without a another look in the soldier’s direction, Rick shouting after him, almost pleading with him “Deadshot I need your help!”
“No sir” Deadshot called back, pausing on the threshold to look back at him “You need a miracle”
Entering the bar, he disappeared from view, Fade looking to the others for their reaction.
Harley curtsied deeply and flounced into the bar after the assassin, Digger shot Rick a contemptuous smile before following, Diablo pulling Croc along with him as he too left.
The remaining members of Alpha squad shook their heads and continued along their path, they were soldiers after all and this was their mission, whatever their personal beliefs might be. Rick looked to Katana hoping for some support, but she wouldn’t or couldn’t meet his eyes, turning and heading into the bar after the criminals, a move Fade would have never expected. Leaving her alone in the rain with her former CO, Rick looked to Fade eyes dropping to the floor defeated. He’d been treating her poorly all evening, whatever his motivations might have been, he didn’t expect any support from her.
She sighed heavily, stepping forward to place a hand on his shoulder, the man’s head snapped up hope flaring in his eyes only to be extinguished a moment later as she too walked away.
Entering the bar, she found Harley playing bartender, pouring shots of whatever she’d laid her hands on first and handing them round. Lawton and Digger were propping up the middle section of the bar, Diablo at the far end, Croc taking up residence in one of the booths nearby. Pulling herself up onto the bar Fade swung her legs over placing her feet on the bartender’s side, she could see everyone from there and reach the good liquor on the top shelf.
Waving away the shot glass Harley held out to her, she instead reached up and grabbed down a bottle of single malt, cracking the top off and swigging directly from the bottle. It burned on the way down but in a pleasant way that reminded her she was still alive and helped shake off the chill of the rain permeating her very bones.
Even Katana accepted a shot from the pretty psychopath pouring drinks, but she refused to toast to honour among thieves as declared by Lawton, stating she wasn’t a thief and walking away from them, Fade sniggering at her reaction.
Lawton didn’t take it personally though he mocked her lightly, clinking his shot against Harley’s blue umbrella’d concoction and Digger’s can of beer before downing his shot.
As had been her way most of the evening Fade found herself zoning out, occasionally swigging from the bottle in her hand, half aware of the conversation but not really paying attention. Lawton was holding court for the most part, but then Diablo spoke up. He’d been the quietest out of them all so far, hanging back not wanting to get involved but based on what they’d seen back in the building he was also the most powerful amongst them. Judging by what he was telling them about his past and the groups reaction to it, he probably had the one of the most tragic backstories too due to misuse of the same powers, it certainly explained his reluctance to use them.
Fade couldn’t help but see the irony, she was sat in a room full of thieves and murders, herself included, even Katana couldn’t say her hands were clean whatever her reasons may have been. Yet none of them were comfortable with the thought of hurting women and children, she didn’t doubt some of them had killed women, when required, they’d probably even justified it to themselves as a necessary evil but the thought of killing an innocent bothered them all.
Fade eyed Croc as Diablo spoke, he was the only one she wasn’t sure of in that regard considering the man or beast, whatever he identified as, was a self-confessed cannibal. Perhaps he too drew the line at kids but then again he might consider them a delicacy.
It was Digger’s quiet question that brought her focus back to Diablo “and the kids?”
Harley the one to respond her voice shaking “He killed them” the horrified look on Digger’s face surprised Fade but because his eyes were watery too betraying the big Aussie’s bleeding heart for all to see. Scooting sideways along the bar slightly she leant forward reaching over to place a hand on his shoulder, offering and the same comfort he’d given her this evening. He looked up at her, blinked a couple of times and pulled her hand from his shoulder to hold it tightly in his own. Fade was distracted but looked up when Harley shouted at Diablo, his own eyes tearing as he thought of his family, confessing his sins to the rest of them. The blonde continued to have a go at him though the volume of her voice dropped, Lawton attempting to get her to leave him be, but she ignored him. Fade frowned Harley had a sharp tongue at times but this wasn’t her, this was her grief talking, her mouth running away with her before her brain could catch up.
It was Digger that was the one to silence her “Why is it always a knife fight every single time you open your mouth” he demanded coldly, glaring at her across the bar Harley’s eyes widening at the challenge, but refusing to back down considering the way he was talking to her.
Fade didn’t exactly blame him, but she extracted her hand from his immediately, not that he noticed. Letting her go without sparing her a glance as he continued, a nasty edge to his voice “You know outside you’re amazing but inside… you’re ugly”
Harley bit back straight away declaring in a whisper “We all are… We all are” her voicing rising as she repeated her words driving her point home.
Digger opened his mouth to argue some more but Fade cut him off testily, a look of loathing on her face as she defended her friend “That’s enough”
The Aussie raised an eyebrow at her shocked by the look of blatant hostility on her face, a nasty snarl gracing his own as he opened his mouth once more, eyes flashing with anger locked on hers.
The sound of the door opening attracted everyone’s attention, whatever retort Digger was going to make dying on his tongue as they watched Rick enter the bar.
Fade watched him walk across the room settling on the stool between Diablo and Lawton unsurprised, he wouldn’t have just walked away from them, they were assets and his responsibility, it would be his ass on the line if he just let them walk away.
It was Harley that addressed him first, shaking her head at him “We don’t want you here”
Rick looked up to her face and then around to the rest, the truth of her words reflected back to him everywhere he looked, even by Fade.
“Did you get to the part in that binder where I was sleeping with her?” Rick admitted his attention on Lawton. No one else had seen the binder but no one reacted to the new information, it made sense when you thought about it now she had the last piece of the puzzle, but the hypocrisy of it was what pissed her off.
“Unbelievable!” She muttered swinging herself from the bar and dropping down to the floor, adding “I need some air” for whoever might be paying attention to her.
Striding from the bar into the street she was relieved to find it had stopped raining at last, she never intended to go far but she needed a moment alone. Eyeing Alpha Squad who had apparently returned to wait for their CO she turned, disappearing into the small alleyway that ran between the bar and the next building, dropping down onto her haunches her back against the wall.
Shaking her head, she fumed quietly to herself at the man’s gall, the way he’d been talking to her all night grated on her. He’d been treating them all as freaks and degenerates, but yet whole time he’d been sleeping with someone just like them. Acting like he was somehow above them, but the whole time he was no better, a murderer for his country rather than money but a murderer, nonetheless.
The sound of hurried footsteps pulled Fade back into the present suddenly aware that she was somewhat exposed and on her own, which given the current situation could be potentially hazardous to her health.
Standing and peering out into the street she was astonished to see Digger march swiftly past “Hey Digger!” she called out as he moved out of her eyeline. Backtracking he arrived back at the entrance to the alleyway moments later, an apprehensive look on his face considering they’d been on the precipice of an argument when Rick had entered the bar.
Fade shrugged waving her hand indicating she’d moved on instead cocking an eyebrow at him “You trying get your head blown off? You know Flag won’t hesitate right? He proved that earlier if you remember”
Digger nodded at her acknowledging the wordless dismissal of their almost disagreement with a small grateful smile, explaining “Flag said we were free to go”
Fade hummed in response “Seems unlikely?”
Digger laid a hand on his chest over his heart, the other palm up in front of him “Swear on me mums’ life. Smashed the gadget that makes our heads pop right in front of us and everything”
She scoffed eyebrows flying up to her hairline in shock “Well shit. Didn’t know he had it in him, the explosive is still embedded in your neck though” she pointed out.
He nodded with a smile “I know a guy back at central city” frowning slightly he appeared to be considering his next words, finally opening his mouth his decision made “Fancy comin along for the ride?”
That took Fade aback, it was quite possibly the last thing she expected him to say, “You want me to come with you?” she clarified, wondering if she misheard.
He shrugged “Why not?” downplaying the request he continued “Someone with your skill set could come in handy in my line of work”
Fade smirked at him “Oh I see it’s my skill set you want to take advantage of… nothing else”
Chuckling he stepped into the alleyway away from the interested eyes of Alpha squad, crowding her to the wall “If there’s more on offer Darl, I won’ be saying no”
“You want to get up close and personal, do you?” Fade teased as he grinned down at her “How close were you thinking?”
Stepping firmly into her personal space he placed a hand on the wall either side of her head leaning down his lips a beath away from hers “Reckon this is a pretty decent start alright”
Pausing he waited for her to decide, he’d made it clear what he wanted but she needed to decide for herself. It was only a few seconds that they stared at one another, but it felt like an eternity until Fade leant forward connecting their lips her hands flying up to wrap around his shoulders pulling him to her and pressing her body against his tightly.
She felt him smile into the kiss, pushing her back against the wall, crushing her between the brick and his bulk, arms dropping to wrap around her, holding her tightly as their mouths moved in sync.
His lips were insistent on hers demanding the surrender she was only too willing to give with the way his hands were exploring her body. When one large hand slipped underneath her jacket, she gasped his hands cold on the warm skin of her back.
Chuckling at her reaction he slid his other hand under the jacket as well sighing he used her as a hand warmer, Fade squirming under his touch. Slipping his tongue into her mouth while she was distracted the kiss turned heated in a heartbeat. Plundering her mouth, he tangled his tongue with hers enthralled with her taste undercut with the whiskey she’d been drinking moments earlier.
Fade knew she needed to stop him, she was rapidly getting punch drunk on his kisses, if she allowed this to continued much longer, she suspected she’d agree to anything he might suggest.
Placing a firm hand on his chest she pushed him away from her, stifling her own whine at the loss of contact, the world rushing to them the stillness of the night buzzing in her ears as loud as the pounding of her heart.
Digger blinked rapidly appearing a little dazed himself, recovering himself enough to grin down at her “That a yes love?”
With a deep and somewhat regretful sigh she shook her head, stepping out of his arms as his face fell “You’re really going back?”
She paused at the entrance to the alleyway “I made Flag a promise, besides I can’t leave Harley”
He nodded disappointment and resignation on his face “Shame. You and me coulda had some fun. Reckon I coulda shown you a real good time” He leered at her, his roguish charm coming as easily as breathing.
Chuckling she nodded, but not willing to say goodbye completely “Maybe you still will sometime” a grin spreading across his face when he realised, she wasn’t saying no, just not now “See you around Digger”
“Later Darl” he called after her as she exited the alleyway leaving him behind.
Returning to the bar, sad that Digger was gone but not believing for one second that it would be the last she’d ever see of him, she reached for the door just as it opened from the other side. Lawton nearly knocking her on her ass as he exited the building “You running too?” she quipped, but the man shook his head “Nah we’re gonna get this shit done”
Fade smiled when Harley appeared behind him moments later a answering wide smile on her face and a determined look in her eye.
Rick exited next, stilling when he saw Fade surprised “You’re still here?” he asked disbelieving, despite her presence in front of him.
She shrugged “Couldn’t leave Harley could I”
“I can take care of myself” the blonde countered at once slightly put out.
“Oh, I know that” Fade retorted turning to look at her as the others filed out of the building behind Rick “I was more concerned about how many of the others you’d get killed in the process” She added sweetly, motioning to them with an incline of her head, Rick snorting and then quickly covering his laughter as the woman scowled at him.
Regrouping with Alpha Squad who were actually pleased Rick had managed to talk them round, they left Rick standing awkwardly in front of Fade, a hand scratching at the back of his neck betraying his unease.
“Look Suz..” he started but she cut him off not needed the apology “It’s Fade now… and don’t worry about it”
Rick smiled tightly but nodded relieved he was getting off so easily, he should have known better.
“You know I don’t judge” she winked at him turning to join the others.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” He called out hurrying after her and falling into step at her side, the group moving out with a nod of his head.
“So you’ve got a bit of a taste for the bad ones now” Fade continued, causally checking over her guns and reloading them as they walked “I don’t blame you, heart wants what the heart wants” She added slapping a fresh magazine into place with a reassuring click. Turning to look at him with a grin spreading slowly across her face she added “Then again we could be talking about something slightly further south of your heart” she dropped her gaze pointedly to his groin with an accompanying wink to finish off her point that had him barking out a loud laugh, several of Alpha squad looking around startled by the noise.
Stifling the noise quickly he grinned at her, more the man she knew right now than he’d been all night “I haven’t missed you” he declared.
Chuckling she nudged his shoulder with hers “Yeah, you have. Now come on let’s get this kamikaze mission underway”
Lawton snorted at her comment looking over his shoulder at her to ask, “In a hurry to die or something?”
Fade shrugged “I’m wet, cold, tired and let’s be honest, more than a little bored of traipsing around this damn city. If I die, well at least I know hell will be warmer than this” she finished with a smirk on her face, in no doubt where she’d end up if this mission ended badly for her.
Chuckling Lawton called over his shoulder “Meet you down there?”
“You’re on” she called back, turning to Harley as she fell back from the others to talk to her
“Where’s Boomer?” she enquired, looking over her shoulder as if the man would magically appear at her words.
Slotting her now reloaded weapons back into her holsters Fade explained with a small pang of disappointment, not that she blamed him “He took off”
Harley watched her friends face closely, spotting the flicker of emotion, a small smile springing onto her face in response, it had been a long time since she’d seen Fade interested in anyone. Even though he was gone she considered it progress “That’s a shame” she murmured still smiling even though Fade was now rolling her eyes at her tone.
“What’s a shame?”
Looking around sharply, at the familiar but unexpected voice Fade smiled in welcome, shaking her head. Harley merely shooting him a knowing glance as joined them, finishing his beer and tossing the can over his shoulder.
“You came back?” Lawton called out, acknowledging the return of the Aussie with a note of surprise in his voice.
“Yeah well, the crazy bitch is trying to destroy the world” Digger hollered back “So I figured I was screwed either way, might as well go down swinging”
Fade snickered as Rick tensed as his words “Hey that’s his girlfriend you’re talking about” she admonished him, earning a glare from the soldier “Could you not?”
“There’s no accounting for taste” interjected Lawton the disgust in his voice evident.
“Hey!” Rick reared up defending his love “June’s a good woman”
Lawton snorted at his misunderstanding “Hey I got no dispute it’s her taste I’m questioning, she went slumming with the likes of you”
“He’s got a point” Fade laughed out loud, grinning good humouredly.
“Shut up” Rick growled but couldn’t seem to prevent the smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
***
Getting to the swirling vortex of death hadn’t been a problem strangely, with no sign of any more of the bubble headed creatures that used to be people. Rick informed them when asked that Enchantress’ brother Incubus feeds on a person’s lifeforce, suggesting that with the city evacuated he might be snacking on their own army. Fade scrunched up her nose in disgust at the thought, though it did mean less bad guys overall it also meant the big guy was likely to be hungry by the time they got there. Despite having scuttled away as soon as he was free to do so, now Digger was back with them, he was actively participating. Producing some sort of surveillance boomerang when they were discussing how to best find out what was going on in the station without putting anyone in danger, up until that point the best suggestion was for Fade to go have a look, something she wasn’t too thrilled about.
She was impressed when he revealed he’d made it himself, not taking offense at her amazement he just smiled at her “I might talk rough love, but I’m not as stupid as people think”
Shooting him a quick smile they followed the others to the closest subway entrance, with the intention of retrieving the demo charge that Enchantress had come so close to blowing up Rick with earlier, but found the tunnel flooded.
Luckily for them it turned out that GQ and the remaining three members of Alpha squad were Navy seals before they joined ARGUS, I quick call back to base and their scuba gear was on the way, the four of them dashing off to the rendezvous point.
Now all they had to do was sit and wait, which was easier said than done, everyone was running on adrenaline by this point amped up and ready to go but instead they could only busy themselves with checking their gear. Fade handed Harley one of her spare Mags the blonde popping out the bullets one by one transferring them to her six shooter. She went to tuck the rest of the magazine into her bra but Fade just frowned at her and snatched it away, slipping it back into her vest securely with a shake of her head. It wasn’t as bad as tucking a loaded handgun into the waistband of your trousers, but it wasn’t exactly sensible either.
Fade checked over her guns repeatedly thumbing the safety on and off, ensuring it wouldn’t jam and then reloading. It was a nervous habit she’d developed over time, something she didn’t even notice anymore but the near constant clicking of her weapons had Rick chuckling, the sound drawing her attention. Snorting with amusement as she realised what she’d been doing, the woman checked over the guns one last time and holstered them with a smirk, but now she had nothing to occupy her hands or her brain.
Watching the others instead, she found they all had their own rituals, Rick and Lawton checking over their guns as she had been, though slightly less obsessively. Digger sharpening the already razer sharp edge of a Boomerang with a small whet stone and Katana talking to the smoking sword in her hands in hushed rapid Japanese, the emotion clear in her voice.
Fade already knew Katana’s backstory, but it was no less sad hearing Rick explain it to everyone else, somehow it hit different today. They might be nothing but a bunch of morally and ethically grey criminals, but none of them had to be here each of them had chosen to take on this fight, to protect something or someone. A quiet had settled over them that bordered on uncomfortable, each lost in their own thoughts. It was Digger that broke first, unable to bear the tension he made a snarky remark, as was his way “Yeah well… you know what they say about the crazy ones”
Fade chuckled looking up at the man to find he was staring at her, a strange look on his face that she couldn’t place, but she offered him a smile that he returned as Harley called “Huh?” making them all laugh quietly.
“Good to go” GQ called into the entrance they were clustered around, Rick responding back with an affirmative, motioning for the group to follow him with a clipped “Let’s move”
Entering the main hall of the train station through the devastated subway beneath they were able to witness first-hand the damage Incubus could cause. Dead bodies and ammunition casings littered the floor, while more of the black spikey substance they’d seen earlier hung from walls and the ceiling.
Moving quickly but quietly up the stairs, they darted behind the stone pillars surrounding the open area usually full of commuters, but today only containing Enchantress and her weapon.
The light show they could see outside was emanating directly from her like glowing smoke it was mesmerizing to watch her body undulating ceaselessly as they watched enthralled.
“Hey, everyone can see all this trippy magic stuff, right?” Harley murmured quietly, a nervous edge to her voice.
Lawton nodded as Rick asked, “Yeah why?”
Harley smiled at him relieved but still not entirely convinced, explaining “I’m off my meds” something that had Fade stifling a snort of laughter.
The sound of Enchantress’ voice calling out to them was strangely unnerving, despite speaking softly her voice not raised, each of them could hear her as clearly as if she was stood next to them.
“I’ve been waiting for you all night. Step out of the shadows I won’t bite”
Fade raised an eyebrow, did the witch seriously think anyone of them would fall for that, the next second biting back a yelp of surprise as Harley deemed it a perfectly reasonable request and trotted off towards her.
"Harley!” she hissed, lunging for her almost out of cover, but Digger wrapped an arm around her waist and dragged her back, holding her against him as Lawton did the same to Harley.
She stopped struggling to get to her crazy friend settling for shooting her an aggravated look that just had Harley shrugging.
“Why are you here?” the witch continued undeterred “Because the soldier led you? and all for Waller. Why do you serve those who cage you? I Am your ally and I know what you want, exactly what you want”
Fade shook her head as a strange buzzing sounded in her ears her entire body prickling all over but not unpleasantly. Closing her eyes, she felt a warm breeze on her face the warmth of the sun on her skin, a feeling of peace in her soul with only the sound of the sea surrounding her. Confused she blinked, opening her eyes to see the endless expanse of the glittering blue ocean before her, leaning back and twisting she realised she was stood on the deck of a massive sailboat, completely alone. The quiet comforting rather than fear inducing as she’d been trained to expect, she leant into the feeling, turning back to the water, and gazing over the wide expanse with a deeply satisfied sigh.
The sound of bare feet padding across the wooden boards drew her attention, but she didn’t turn, a pair of strong arms wrapping around her from behind, warm lips caressing the skin of her neck “So where to next Darl?”
The familiar cadence of Digger’s accent broke her from the trance, shocked that he would appear in what she guessed to be her most deep-seated desire. Jerking forward as she awoke from the witches’ spell, Digger’s arm still caging her dragged her back, his face buried in her hair as he muttered to himself with his eyes closed.
Looking to the others they all seemed to be locked within the spell, dazed expressions across their faces only Diablo was fighting, his face screwed up against the onslaught. A pained shout ripped from him as his eyes snapped open “Can’t change what I did and neither can you!”
Breathing hard he looked around, seeing only Fade awake and staring at him, she could only guess what the shaking and angry man had been shown. Pointing at Digger and Katana he turned to Lawton, Rick and Harley “Wake them up”
Twisting in Digger’s strong grip she fisted her hands in his jacket the best she could do in the confined space, shaking him roughly “Wake up!” he didn’t react, continuing to murmur to himself. Fade felt almost guilty waking him, his expression was so peaceful she didn’t want to tear him away from whatever he was seeing, but that wasn’t something she could allow him right now.
Reaching up she gripped his chin harshly and shouted again, louder this time but still nothing. Frowning unsure what to try, a wicked thought stole across her tired brain, if this didn’t work nothing would.
“Oh my god Harley! Put your shirt back on and stop kissing Katana” she all but screamed in his face.
Jerking awake so quickly it was almost comical Digger’s gaze cast wildly around, finally coming to rest on her upturned and grinning face. She expected a harsh rebuke or a furious complaint for tricking him, but he just gazed at her confusion clouding his eyes, hands bunching into the fabric of her jacket at her waist, seemingly unwilling to let her go.
“Digger?” She whispered gently, hand coming to rest over his chest, his heart beating wildly and erratically under her palm as he calmed slowly.
“You looked lovely in that dress” was his quiet response, Fade’s mouth falling open in surprise at his words “What dress?”
Her words and shocked expression seemed to clear the lingering traces of the spell from the man, shaking his head he let go of her abruptly, stepping back quickly and then around her. A pink tinge climbing his cheeks as he followed Diablo down the stairs into battle.
***
Groaning Fade sat up too quickly the tiles appearing to jump up and smack her in the face as she almost collapsed back down onto them. The last thing she remembered before everything went dark was being lifted up in the air, every nerve ending screaming her body taut and rigid feeling as though she was being ripped apart.
“Woah there love, steady now”
A familiar voice broke through the fog, warm hands propping her up against something just as warm but hard like the floor she was sat on.
“Feels like I got hit by a truck? What the fuck happened?” She muttered rubbing her face, peeling open her eyes and blinking rapidly up into Digger’s concerned face, confirming that she was leaning against his chest, propped up between his legs.
“She did something to ya darl. Stopped ya phasing or some shit, and then chucked you across the room” he explained, Fade nodding along it sounded familiar she just couldn’t remember it happening.
Looking slowly round Fade took in the darkened room, the earlier light show absent, chaos and devastation all around them “Did we win?” she murmured eyes straying to the panicked desperate witch surrounded by the others, Rick towering over her with her heart in his hand.
Moments later a devastated Rick crushed the heart he held in his hands falling to his knees and sobbing unashamedly, for the second time tonight Fade’s supposedly non-existent heart broke. She wanted to go to him, but her legs felt disconnected from her body, instead she leant into Diggers warm embrace, a single tear falling for her friend.
The man was surprisingly comforting though he’d had plenty of practise already this evening, making quiet shushing sounds to sooth her as she cried, she wasn’t sure why he was being so gentle with her but was too tired to question it.
A commotion by the steps drew their attention back to their fallen foe, only to see Rick rush forward with a surprised sob, pulling his lost love into his arms.
It took a moment for Fade to stop crying relief, making her tears fall even harder but it gave her enough time for her head to clear. Wondering how she had come to be tucked between Digger’s legs, in a far corner of the training station surrounded by debris, she frowned up into his tired face. “Did I land on you?” the only conclusion she could draw from their positioning.
“Sorta” he confirmed with a small wince rolling his shoulders, his aching joints cracking with the movement.
“What do you mean sorta?” she muttered still trying to make sense of what was going on
“He caught you babes” Harley announced, having bounced over to check on her now that June was once again up and about, lost love restored.
“You caught me?” Fade peered up into Digger’s face surprised.
Grabbing her friend under the arms Harley attempted to haul her to her feet, she was surprisingly strong, but Fade had to help her, pulling her shaking legs under her as Harley responded to her question matter of factly.
“Well, he cushioned your fall more than anything else, but otherwise I reckon you’d be splattered across the floor about now”
Standing upright on legs that still felt like jelly Fade raised an eyebrow at the Captain commenting “That was surprisingly selfless of you”
He barked out a laugh “What can I say sweetness I’m a nice guy”
“Yeah, I’m not buying it” Fade snorted a grin on her face as she held out a hand to help him up.
Miming an arrow to the heart he clutched at his chest “I’m wounded Darl”
“No, you’re not” she shook her head at him waving her hand in his face “Come on gimme your hand”
Reaching for her they were all surprised when Digger’s hand passed straight through hers.
Frowning Harley watched her for a moment as Fade stared at her own hands, watching herself fade in and out but without control.
“You ok babes you’re kinda flickering” she murmured taking a small step back from her, as though she was a bomb that might go off at any moment, instead holding a handout to help Digger clamber to his feet.
“Well, that’s irritating” she muttered still staring at her hands “Hope it goes away”
