MetaDede Week day 2: First meeting
Tumblr media
In my opinion I like to think that they met during childhood but got separated after a while and then they meet again during adulthood! Although they barely remembered anything they still felt familiar with each other

15 Day BL Challenge: Day 5: Biggest Flop
Here's the full list of challenges
I'll take this as being the show that I was greatly looking forward to and wound up being seriously disappointing. By this, I'm not talking about shows which flubbed the ending *cough Last Twilight cough* or shows which had a really cringe choice somewhere along the way *cough Fish Upon the Sky Episode 4 cough*.
That makes it tough to choose, because if something doesn't engage me throughout, I'm likely to drop it. Actually, if something doesn't engage me early, I'm likely to drop it. And it hardly seems fair for me to list something I abandoned by the first or second episode.
So, nothing immediately comes to mind. Let me take a look and my viewing history, and see if there's something that jumps out at me.
*** dead air ***
Okay, the series that I was most looking forward to, was disappointed in but stuck with till the end, and was ultimately least satisfied by is a toss-up between Color Rush and Vice Versa. Interesting that they're both science fantasy, a genre I love. Maybe because I have a higher bar for that genre I'm more judging about how well series do in it.
I can't say I get the love for Color Rush that seems to be pretty widespread. The series felt flat to me. It wasn't bad, it's just there wasn't much there there. The probe never seemed to be in danger, which took away a lot of the tension that I would have expected to be there. It would have been so much better if the mono Yeon Woo had been this close to killing his probe Yoo Han and somehow they worked it out. Or maybe that is what happened and the series was so flat I've forgotten.
Vice Versa, on the other hand, spent so much time in product placement that it was constantly a distraction. The usual complaint I hear about the series is that they spent so much time on the screenplay subplot and not enough on the difference between the two universes. Actually, that choice made sense: the mains had no idea whether they would ever get back to their own universe or whether the portkey idea was even true. What choice did they have but to make their way in the new place? The universe differences seemed random - a tide that goes out (or was it comes in) only once a month? - but that's also true of the film Yesterday, and I loved Yesterday. But every time they spent several minutes on a product placement, my interest flagged. And after Bad Buddy, there's no way GMMTV can't claim to know good product placement. The show got me caring enough about Talay and Puen to stick with it to the end, but it sure was a disappointment.
Do I go with Color Rush because I remember so little about how it ended? Or do I go with Vice Versa because I had so much invested in it only for it to just barely deliver?
I have to pick one, don't I?
*** open ending ***

Did you ever declare the winner of the ‘trash watch’ bls ?
The trashiest trash watch so far?
All My BL Series Trash Watches in order of most to least amount of marshmallows needed for the dumpster fires
Tumblr media
Don’t Say No - LeoFiat 2021 - can’t stop the trash watch, by green jello allegory standards alone this one probubly required the most marshmallows
RATING: 1000 of those tiny little marshmallows, required to be roasted speared onto willow switches, of course, for maximum PAIN
Tumblr media
TharnType 2: 7 Years of I Can’t Even - serious trash watch
RATING: 100 dumb yellow peeps, just that much trash
Tumblr media
Gen Y the series - the original trash watch & Gen Y 2 - The Glorious Trash Watch Reborn
RATING: 50 extras fat pink marshmallows and maybe some cheep chocolate and stale gram crackers because Gen Y 2 gave us s'mores... we didn’t ask for it, but they gave it to us anyway
Tumblr media
Enchanté Ep-by-Ep Watch Along - rose petal scented dumpster fire
RATING: 5 stale plain marshmallows, just I had such high expectations
Tumblr media
Manner of Death - This one was kind of hilarious since I spent most of the show trying to figure out what it wanted to be and if is was actually BL, but to be fair, so did it.
RATING: 1 box of Lucky Charms cereal, the marshmallows were hard but not unwelcome, no roasting because there turned out to be no dumpster fire
Tumblr media
Oxygen the series - the first one I did when this blog was under its old name
RATING: 12 homemade high quality fancy pants marshmallows dipped in milk chocolate, far too sweet, can’t stop eating, no roasting needed, may make you sick tho.
Tumblr media
Bad Buddy - Ep by Ep Snarkfest episode recaps (decidedly NOT trash)
RATING: 1 extra large rice krispy treat, you think you’re gonna hate it, but once you start eating it you can not stop.
Tumblr media
Light On Me - but I only picked up and started talking about it at half way through at around ep 8 also the opposite of trash
RATING: 3 moon-pies, marshmallow fluff stuffed chewy cookie of yummy, certainly no trash fire, eminently snackable, a little over processed tho
Tumblr media
Color Rush - watch me slowly lose my mind over one very short show
RATING: 2 scoops rocky road ice cream, oh the marshmallows are there but it’s not what you first think of when I say marshmallow

We're in 2023, and there are still people trying to argue that Katniss was aro/ace and never felt romantic/sexual attraction for Peeta... 🤦🏻‍♀️ I could write a long meta about this for the milionth time, but this time I'll do something different. I'll just show some quotes from the books.
If she was unable to feel romantic/sexual attraction and only ever had platonic feelings for him, what are all of these quotes supposed to mean?
"He gives me a smile that seems so genuinely sweet with just the right touch of shyness that unexpected warmth rushes through me." (The Hunger Games)
"This is the first kiss that we’re both fully aware. Neither of us hobbled by sickness or pain or simply unconscious. Our lips neither burning with fever or icy cold. This is the first kiss where I actually feel stirring inside my chest. Warm and curious. This is the first kiss that makes me want another." (The Hunger Games)
"So, in a way, my name being drawn in the reaping was a real piece of luck,’ says Peeta. For a moment, I’m almost foolishly happy and then confusion sweeps over me. Because we’re supposed to be making up this stuff, playing at being in love not actually being in love." (The Hunger Games)
[...]"His face takes on a special look when he concentrates. His usual easy expression is replaced by something more intense and removed that suggests an entire world locked away inside him. I’ve seen flashes of this before: in the arena, or when he speaks to a crowd, or that time he shoved the Peacekeepers’ guns away from me in District 11. I don’t know quite what to make of it. I also become a little fixated on his eyelashes, which ordinarily you don’t notice much because they’re so blond. But up close in the sunlight slanting in from the window, they’re a light golden color and so long I don’t see how they keep from getting all tangled up when he blinks.
One afternoon Peeta stops shading a blossom and looks up so suddenly that I start, as though I were caught spying on him, which in a strange way maybe I was. But he only says, “You know, I think this is the first time we’ve ever done anything normal together.” (Catching Fire)
"I don't know what I expected from my first meeting with Peeta after the announcement. A few hugs and kisses. A little comfort maybe. Not this." (Catching Fire)
“When Peeta holds out his arms, I walk straight to them. It’s the first time since they announced The Quarter Quell that he’s offered me any sort of affection. He’s been more like a very demanding trainer, always pushing, always insisting Haymitch and I run faster, eat more, know our enemy better. Lover? Forget about that. He abandoned any pretense of even being my friend. I wrap my arms tighly around his neck before he can order me to do push-ups or something. Instead he pulls me in closer and buries his face in my hair. Warmth radiates from the spot where his lips just touch my neck, slowly spreading through the rest of me. It feels so good, so impossibly good, that I know I won’t be the first to let go." (Catching Fire)
"I realize only one person will be damaged beyond repair if Peeta dies. Me.
'I do', I say. 'I need you'." (Catching Fire)
"I feel that thing again. The thing I only felt once before. In the cave last year, when I was trying to get Haymitch to send us food. I kissed Peeta about a thousand times during those Games and after. But there was only one kiss that made me feel something stir deep inside. Only one that made me want more. But my head wound started bleeding and he made me lie down.
This time, there is nothing but us to interrupt us. And after a few attempts, Peeta gives up on talking. The sensation inside me grows warmer and spreads out from my chest, down through my body, out along my arms and legs, to the tips of my being. Instead of satisfying me, the kisses have the opposite effect, of making my need greater. I thought I was something of an expert on hunger, but this is an entirely new kind." (Catching Fire)
"When I wake, I have a brief, delicious feeling of happiness that is somehow connected with Peeta." (Catching Fire)
"I sit next to Peeta on the sand to eat my rolls. For some reason, it's difficult to look at him. Maybe it was all that kissing last night, although the two of us kissing isn't anything new. It might not even have felt any different for him." (Catching Fire)
"I sit back on my bed cross-legged and find myself rubbing the smooth iridescent surface of the pearl back and forth against my lips. For some reason, it’s soothing. A cool kiss from the giver himself." (Mockingjay)
"I’m light-headed with giddiness. What will I say? Oh, who cares what I say? Peeta will be ecstatic no matter what I do. He’ll probably be kissing me anyway. I wonder if it will feel like those last kisses on the beach in the arena, the ones I haven’t dared let myself consider until this moment." (Mockingjay)
“Sometimes when I’m alone, I take the pearl from where it lives in my pocket and try to remember the boy with the bread, the strong arms that warded off nightmares on the train, the kisses in the arena. To make myself put a name to the thing I've lost. But what's the use? It's gone, he's gone. Whatever existed between us is gone." (Mockingjay)
"Despite what I feel for Peeta, this is when I accept deep down that he'll never come back to me." (Mockingjay)
"On the night I feel that thing again, the hunger that overtook me on the beach, I know this would have happened anyway. [...] So after, when he whispers, 'You love me. Real or not real? I tell him, 'Real'." (Mockingjay)
There's more quotes like that, but I think these are enough. Now, can you all please stop pretending that these quotes don't exist and accept the fact that there's canon evidence refuting the belief that Katniss was aro/ace and never felt romantic/sexual attraction for Peeta? 😑

ok so i was doing some research for my next meta post and got a little distracted
so i know we have multiple examples of threes and references to seven being a favorite but what about fours?
what made me notice it was this insistence that there has to be four archangels - i mean they are getting replaced left and right in season two - (besides in the Job minisode but that’s getting into what the meta is about so i’ll leave it for rn)
so i went on another rewatch journey of trying to notice fours and i’ve only got through season one these are some of the things i’ve noticed.
pls let me know if this has been touched on before i’d love to read it and if i missed anything(ik i haven’t got to season two yet in looking for fours) there is bound to be some
four archangels - gabriel, michael, uriel, sandalphon
four demon council - beelzebub, hastur, ligur, dagon
four horseman - death, war, famine, pollution
the four kids - adam, pepper, brian, wensleydale
four lights come down before the metatron appears in the portal
and then like the basics four directions and four seasons
but what i’ve noticed is that one of them is always off?? somehow?? like sandalphon is so visually different in colors than the others, dagon is the only lord of that group while the others are dukes/prince, pollution is a replacement of pestilence, and adam is the only non-human. The lights also stand out in this way because three of them kind of come down slowly together, though one is bigger than the others, but the last one rushes down alone
i just i’m having a lot of thoughts about what this could all mean but i could just be looking way to far into it

Legends Z-A Thoughts and Theories!
Okay, I was pretty quiet on my opinions for Scarlet and Violet, but I'm confident enough to be very pleased and optimistic for this! Legends Arceus was the strongest Pokemon game we had in a decade, and to see them continue this, bring back Megas, and take an extra year to hopefully make it non-buggy? Makes me so so excited!
On Megas:
It's a bit of a surprise to see Megas back, but honestly? Not too much of a surprise. Even ignoring the inevitability of Kalos remakes, Megas are the only gimmick Pokemon kept around in their spinoffs. It was in Mystery Dungeon, Shuffle, Smash Bros, Pokemon Go, and probably more I'm forgetting! So it was always in the back of Gamefreak's mind and I'm glad it's truly back again!
With Gens 8 and 9 bringing back cross-gen evos, I think they'll focus on only giving Megas to three-stage lines, to not quash the potential of 2nd stage Pokemon getting regular evolutions. So starters and Pokemon like Flygon can get Megas since they can't evolve further, but Pokemon like Tropius and Chimecho probably won't, in case they get evolutions in Gen 10 (That then get Megas)
I also don't think we fully grasp how many more Pokemon can get Megas now, too. Barely any of Gen 5 and 6 had Megas (Seriously only 2 Pokemon between the 228 Pokemon in those gens) and we've had THREE more generations since then!!
Note: We went from wanting a Dunsparce evo, to wanting a Dunsparce Mega, to getting Dudunsparce with mixed fan reception. Now I'm going to be a selfish deluded clown bitch and get my hopes up for a Mega Dudunsparce.
Speaking of starters and Megas, do we think we'll get a mish-mash of older starters for this game that then get Megas (Say, Piplup, Snivy, and Scorbunny) or will we get Megas for the three Kalos starters?
Megas may mean Mega Stones return as held items, and held items weren't in Legends Arceus- new gameplay advancement?
Legends Arceus gave us 7 new Pokemon (most of them cross-gen evos) and a dozen new regional forms. Do you think we'll still get regionals this game, or will the design team be focused more on making new Megas instead?
On the world:
It's been confirmed the whole game is only in Lumiose City- how big is the map?? Hopefully we really do get lots of sidequests, biomes for wild Pokemon, and traversal options.
When is this? We're redeveloping Lumiose City, but are we in the past developing it into its current state, or are we in the present/future developing it into a new solarpunk city? Or neither, and this is a "Paradox" game set in a timeline which doesn't quite match ours?
This doesn't have to be an isekai (as in, we don't have to be time travellers again per se), just keep that in mind!
The "Z" in the logo represents Zygarde, with the black color and green hexagons. So who's the "A"? It's green with green scale/leaf patterns on it. What does it represent? The "Chaos" to Zygarde's "Order"? Is it a 5th Zygarde form or is it a whole new Pokemon?
Meta thoughts:
This further confirms my theory that Gen 9 will last until 2026, where they announce Gen 10 on that year's Pokemon Day for their 30th anniversary, and that's great! I'm glad they aren't overworking themselves too much compared to Gens 6-8.
On them "skipping" Unova remakes: I don't see this as skipping. We've been long overdue for a Z version since Kalos is literally the only Pokemon region to only appear in one release (no third version, no remakes, no sequels, no ultras, no DLC). So we're simply making up for the "deficit" of a third version here, and we can go back to focusing on Unova remakes for Gen 10.
Do you think we'll get any final updates to SV to tide us over until the next LegendZ trailer around August? Maybe a small DLC, mythical reveal, or free update?
Pokemon Adventures skipped the last Legends game, so they'll probably skip this one too? I'm fine either way- at least by skipping it, they won't be too rushed and stressed, and they'll actually have the time to flesh out SV and catch up with ORAS/SM/USUM/SwSh in the full volumes.
But on the off chance they do adapt Legends Z-A, do you think we'll get dexholders named Z and A??
Note for the future- the Yoasobi Pokemon song BiriBiri has a part where they namedrop all the game titles- one part has the lyrics "ABC to the XYZ". Long shot, but if Legends Z-A does indeed have an ABC theming, this could be a crazy bit of either coincidental or intentional foreshadowing!

You have so many braincells bestie it makes me stim so hard in excitement. Your brain is wrinklier than a 16 year old Sphinx cat that has been sitting in a tub of water for Far To Long.
Tim is blissfully unaware of the biggest Arkham breakout in years as he lays curled up against Bruce's side while holding Dick's hand and watching Jason, Bart and Kon play cards. He thinks it's go fish, or maybe Uno. Judging by their faces though, he's quite sure that Jason is winning. This is by far the calmest and happiest he's been since before the Joker took him. Not so much as a pained giggle in almost three hours. They stay that way for another four without a single giggle.
Things are a bit ruined when Dani walks in, not realizing there is still blood on her hands as she says, "well, the Arkham stuff is delt with. How's Tim doing?" As he starts to give panicked giggles, she notices her hands and says, "oh don't worry kid! It's not mine I swear- the clown pushed his luck and-" she is cut off as Tim starts to full on cackle and shake as he cries, sounding almost exactly like the end of a certain flashback. Dani is now also panicking as she tries to make it better by saying, "it's OK! He can't hurt anyone anymore, he'll never get near you again and-"
Kon pulls her out of the room as Tim simply laughs harder, nearly breaking Dick's hand from how hard he is squeezing.
At least Joker has been delt with. For good.
Homie no yOU! You got so many folds in your brain it’s incredible.
Dani realized her mistake and rushed to wash her hands
It was too late. Tim was howling with laughter. His entire frame wracked with shivers as he clutched Jason’s jacket and Dick’s hand like a lifeline. He smile growing so wide that the cuts along his mouth started to reopen and split.
The cheerful sounds that everyone in the room now associated with pain grew louder and louder as some weird shit started happening.
Tim's eyes were momentarily squeezed shut as the clear tear tracks that seemed seemed have a permanent residence on his face started to flow with a strange green liquid. Dick gasped as Tim's eyes flew open and his eyes weren’t his normal blue but instead a bright toxic bright green.
The laughter grew to ear piercing shrieks of pure mirth. The Bats watched in a state of hopelessness and concern as the lights around the room started flickering wildly. Random objects around the room became encased in a bright green glow and started floating on their own volition as Tim howled.
Slowly more and more objects around the room started levitating as any lose item in the room started to swirl around the current residents like they were in the eye of a very spooky land hurricane.
Eventually the laughter slowly died down and in a very sudden motion, the green light left Tim's eyes and everything that was floating fell to the ground with a deafening crash.
For a long moment there was silence. Then Danny spoke up, his eyes were wide with shock and concern for the cackling boy cradled in Bruce's arms. “How did he die?”
The bats were confused. They didn’t understand.
“What?” Dick’s whispered as he gently squeezed his brothers hand, he will definitely have bruises from today but if it helped his brother it made it totally worth it.
Danny’s eyes flashed the same color as Tim’s were moments ago, “How. Did. He. Die.”
Tim's hands went towards his throat. Kon scrambled over to Tim and used his TTK to envelop his friend in a full body hug. Stopping his friend from clawing at his throat to make the laughter stop. The smallest whimper of relief between the laughter was the only sign of acknowledgement Tim gave as his shaking slowly ceased. His eyes still locked in place from where he saw Dani's bloodied hands, tears still glowing a bright toxic green.
Danny gestures all around the room to the hurricane of broken items. "This all says otherwise. He didn't have the meta gene and he feels like a ghost."
Bruce remembered what Joker said to him as he went on and on about his son, “The shocks and the chemicals took their toll.”
Looks like this is an even more complicated situation than they initially thought.

Oliver Queen had thought he’d seen it all; however this Fenton guy just seems to be full of fun little gadgets. And puns. So many puns.
No one knows anything about the guy other than he’s a mechanical genius. Just magically appeared out of the blue one day with inventions that make Dr. Freeze’s gun look like a toy, claiming that ‘he’s not gonna be here long today but needs to do some field testing.’
And now here's Oliver listening to this kid(it had to be a kid, Fenton didn’t look a day over 14) ramble about how much fun he had today and that he had to come back soon(not looking forward to that). Green Arrow took a good look at the kid.
He was short, maybe around 5’4 without the boots, and didn’t have much bulk, but clearly had a lot of lean muscle from what Oliver could tell from the fight, and black shaggy undercut hair. He wore a red hazmat suit with black gloves and red with black tinted lenses goggles. All covered with a lab coat that is definitely not OSHA compliant for mad scientist children, not with the way it was singed at the bottom and the sleeves had been torn off at the elbow, and the amount of sewn on patches - the biggest being the Fenton logo on his back. He was also lugging around a massive cannon that had Oliver bound to a lamp post with a glowing green net, but nets weren’t the only thing it could shoot, no it shot out so many things within the half hour they had been fighting that Oliver lost count. The kid also had some weird meta biology if the sharp teeth and pointed ears were anything to go on. But Oliver’s thoughts were cut off by a phone ringing. Fenton looked down and started feeling around his suit until he found his phone, a small Iphone with odd attachments with a green ghost case covered with stickers, stopped the alarm and moved his goggles up to rest on his head wincing as the rising sun shined in his eyes.
“Hoo bright. Alright that's it for today I guess! Thanks for playing with me Mr. Arrow, I think I'm gonna pick up some energy drinks and  a couple of snacks before heading home, I still need to write an English paper for Mr. Lancer and Jazz’ll finish me off if I don’t get home soon” Fenton grinned and started to punch in directions for the nearest convenience store on his phone. It was just around the corner from the street they had left the fight off on, nice.
‘Maybe I should grab some for Sam and Tuck’ Danny thought, ‘Oh wait I forgot!’ just as he was about to turn into the store he rushed back to where he left Green Arrow, who was trying to saw his way out of the Fentnet with his knife.
“Sorry! I wanted to do something before I left!” Fenton smiled and put his wiry arm around Oliver in a side hug and pulled out his phone and did a peace sign with the hand around Oliver. “Say Frootloops!”
Fenton pulled off Oliver and showed him the picture, Fenton had a Cheshire cat grin while he had a miserable expression.
“Ooph, probably not your best look but I think we look cool. And really, that’s all that matters at the end of the day. How I think we look.”
“You're a menace, what do you want?”
“You don’t know? I’m god’s playtester and I’m here for bug testing before the rest of the world sees my inventions. Consider Star City my testing sandbox. Anyway see’ya!” and Fenton was gone down the street.
And that was the day Oliver Queen knew that he needed to make sure that the world outside of Star City could never be exposed to Fenton. Especially the bat. If anyone found out his ego would never recover.

Sception Reads Cass Cain #39
Tumblr media
Batgirl (2000) #19 - October 2001 Writer: Kelley Puckett..........Pencils: Damion Scott Inks: Robert Campanella.....Colors: Jason Wright
Another memorable one shot story in what has become the definitive Cass Cain story mold. I don't think I'll have too much to say about this issue specifically. Those who were fans back in the day surely remember it, and if you're new to Cass's Batgirl run then as always for this early period it's a good book and I encourage you to go out and read the issue for yourself, especially since work has been busy this week, so I don't really have time to go through this issue in detail.
Still, by way of brief recap, this is the one where Cass is patrolling extra hard, determined that literally nobody in Gotham should die that night, when she's distracted by a news broadcast:
Tumblr media
Wait, whatever state Gotham is in has the death penalty? Then why do all the super criminals never yadda yadda cinema sins ding sound.
Tumblr media
The guy himself is super stoic about it. No sign of repentance or reflection or regret, but he's clearly accepted what's about to happen and determined to face it with some degree of dignity.
Tumblr media
But then cast abducts him mid-execution
Tumblr media
Only to be stopped by the mother of the woman he killed. I know I'm rushing through this summary, but just, the faces in these panels are so good. Cass's pleading and heartbreak, the woman's implacable stone-faced determination in the face of this demon-looking vigilante, the way the murderer, shocked out of his stoicism, can't bring himself to face this woman. Also just thematically, the metaphor here for Cass's own internal struggle with guilt, that no matter how much she's changed, no matter how much good she does as Batgirl, the man she killed, someone's son, maybe someone's father, is still dead, and she can never change that. It's extremely blunt and on the nose, but it works.
So anyway, back the murderer goes, only now that his stoic shell has broken he can no longer face his end with peaceful dignity. All Cass managed to achieve was to make his death more horrific.
And of course we find out that the reason Cass was so determined that nobody should die is that this was the anniversary of the murder she committed. Which of course is a very Bruce-like sort of sentimentality.
....
We've seen this sort of stand alone episodic one shot from Cass several times now. As much as I like the more serialized stuff playing with her various relationships to Bruce, Babs, the rest of the Bat family, or her dad, or her mom (as of yet unconfirmed by canon), these sorts of one shots really do seem to be the stories og Cass worked best in, the stories she was designed for even. While we've talked about this before, here a short bullet-point review of what defines a classic 'Cass Cain story' from her early Batgirl period
Stand alone story. One issue of the comic, one complete story. It might presume familiarity with Cass's character and background, but they're generally meant to be satisfying even if this is your first introduction to Cass.
Human focus. Cass's stories are concerned not with aliens and demigods and magic and science so fictional it might as well be magic and other larger-than-life comic book tropes, rather they're focused on relatable human characters, regular people trying to survive in a dispassionate world.
Somber tone. Cass's stories aren't upbeat action adventures where good triumphs over evil. The overall tone isn't fun, it's sorrow, grief, isolation, where light and hope are all the more precious for how rare and fragile they are.
'Street level' antagonists / no costumed criminals. This is arguably necessary to maintain the above focus and tone, but no super villains whose bombastic gimmicks and personalities would distract from the humanity of the everyday people around them. Even in the rare case when an enemy has super powers - "Meta" in issue 3, Kenny in issue 10, the cybernetic assassin in issue 18 - they're still dressed in more or less normal clothes and treated as regular people, not comic book super villains. And even then they're the minority of antagonists, usually Cass is fighting regular street thugs and mob guys, even though she's arguably the most explicitly superpowered member of the bat family, which in turn minimizes the length and importance of action scenes so the story can focus on human drama and personal themes.
Heavy thematic resonance. Cass as a character is about family - the family we're born to, or that we choose, and about the tension that results when a family member genuinely loves you and yet is still terrible for you or to you. And she's a character about doing the right thing even when it's hard, even when it doesn't seem to make anything better. And she's a character about guilt, about what it does to you, about how it can motivate you to do better while still hollowing you out inside, about how penance alone without the catharsis of absolution is a bottomless pit that will never be filled no matter how many acts of contrition you pour into it. These themes are the core of Cass's character, and her most iconic stories all relate back to one or more of these core theme in some way. "My dad's bad, isn't he" "Maybe he did [change], but my daughter is still dead"
Not every issue of Cass's book has fit into this description, but when she's not caught up in some crossover story or going through some significant shift to her status quo, these are the sorts of stories she's engaging with on a regular basis. Again, these are arguably the stories she works best in.
I've made no secret of the fact that, while I like modern Cass and I'm glad she exists, she doesn't really hit the same to me as Cass classic. And yeah, a big part of that is that her history and relationships just aren't the same. She doesn't have the same fraught relationship with her father, there are no parallels between David and Bruce, Bruce isn't particularly central to how she became a hero - he wasn't even Batman at the time. She didn't become a hero by stepping into a legacy role Babs had left behind, so there wasn't this close generational connection between her and Babs, or even any particular relationship between them at all until a good deal later.
She still felt guilty over killing someone, but it was something she was forced to do under threat, not something she willingly did only to suddenly regret it in the aftermath, so the guilt seems a lot more misplaced. Also everyone knew about it from pretty early on and forgives her for it, there isn't the same period of her actively hiding it sure that everyone would reject her if they found out like we talked about last time.
So yeah, so, so much of her history and relationships are completely different, but something I maybe haven't focused on enough is that her stories are different.
From the moment modern Cass is introduced she's tied up in global conspiracies, the league of assassins, people turning into monsters. She's on teams with super-powered allies fighting costumed super-criminals in serialized stories that take years to play out to any meaningful resolution. The concise, street-level stories focused on the individual humanity of the people involved and on connecting her stories to her history by thematic links... I haven't read all of modern Cassandra's appearances, but I've read enough of them to say that these kinds of stories either simply aren't present or are overwhelmingly in the minority.
Even in the 'Batgirls' title that sadly ended last year, with Cass, Steph, and Babs are working and living together, theoretically my all time dream book. But their interpersonal relationships are rarely the focus and their adventures are mostly fighting various larger than life costumed criminals. It was a fun book, sure, but even in itself that's a break from OG Cass's deliberately somber tone.
So I guess if there was one thing I'd like to see from modern Cass, apart from some sort of retcon restoring the OG David Cain with his difficult and layered relationship to Cass, it would be a return of the archetypical Cass story, because these are the stories that best highlight Cass's best qualities - her empathy, her compassion, her inner conflicts.

The monotonous thrum of his heart rate monitor was the single thing Shoto could ground himself with. His eyesight was blurry, his sense of self shaky, and his skin was raw – like all of his nerves were exposed to the world. Shifting his arms was not an option, as with every adjustment he made the bandages would dig into his burned flesh.
Where his body was in shambles, stitched together by dexterous but rushed medical attention, his mind was frayed. It did not help that he’s been in isolation for hours upon hours, bedridden and left alone to his thoughts. And those thoughts were anything but rosy.
Everything that had happened from the moment he stepped into Jaku City to where he was now changed his entire perspective of the world. The heroes had, essentially, lost. His father, the number one hero, was beaten. Bakugou and Midoriya looked to be injured beyond repair. And, his long lost brother who on all accounts had been declared dead was well and alive… and was Dabi.
This was not how this mission was supposed to go. Shigaraki was supposed to be defeated, the Meta Liberation army captured, and this uprising put to rest. Instead, it seemed that the heroes simply threw yet another stack of delicate kindling atop a raging flame. Really, all Shoto could do was lay atop the stiff hospital bed and think.
He thought of his loved ones. Of his mother, Fuyumi, and Natsuo, and how they too were left with this grenade of information and how they must be dealing with it. He thought of his friends and teachers, and how he had no knowledge of who had lived and who had died. He thought of the civilians whose entire lives revolved around Jaku City. Their local grocery stores, the coffee shop that became a ritualistic stop on the way to work, the parks and playgrounds where children would play make believe.
However, there was one thing he refused to think of – you. To him, you fell into each of those three categories.
Jaku was where your family lives, no, lived. He saw the all but destroyed sign of that flower shop you had mentioned working at part-time. He found street signs with names that he would hear drop from your lips as you tried to describe a story to the best of your ability. This was a place you had relished and thrived in. The mere notion of you having to fight for your life and those around you on the burning remains of your home was entirely too harrowing for Shoto to believe.
You are his classmate. You’re the girl who sits next to him in class and wakes up early to accompany him on morning runs. You have a blue spiral notebook that, while it holds notes, also provides a lined-paper canvas for doodles. Your bookbag sometimes slumps against his, which you always apologize for, but he never minds.
And deep, deep down, Shoto loves you. He wants to have you in his life after the both of you graduate. He wants to know you, really know you, and revel in all your favorites – color, book, animal, everything. He wants to hold your hand and lace his fingers with yours. He simply wants to be able to have the chance to love you.
What he does not want is for you to see him. Not like this, as the broken shell of who he had patched himself up to be. Shoto knew how who he was affected those around him. Maybe it was not directly his fault that his mother got sick or that his siblings existed in a fractured home, and why Toya became who he was. However, it was most definitely within his control how he behaved at the beginning of his time at UA. He was so hateful, so cold. His first iteration of his hero costume was the embodiment of his perspective – sheer ice. If he could go back and act differently, he would. Then he would have become friends with everyone faster and they wouldn’t have those preconceived notions.
But that was just who he was. Granted, Shoto accepted that fact and moved forward, striving to be the person and hero he wanted to be. But that didn’t stop him from driving people away. He was cold until he was warm, but he was warm until he became too hot. To others, he remained within those two extremities of his quirk – too mean and closed off or too much to deal with. You had always seen him in that happy medium of ‘warm,’ and he did not want to change that image of Shoto Todoroki.
Tumblr media
It must have been early afternoon since Shoto could hear birdsong, but the rays of sunshine reaching through the windows became stronger. The burning in his esophagus had been healing properly, as he was assured multiple times by the doctors and nurses who frequented his room. His speech was hoarse, but functional – a fact that he was not going to take for granted. Friends had come by to see him, assuring Class 1A’s safety despite Midoriya’s current condition.
He was grateful for company, but today being a no visitor day, he was also grateful for the quiet. He was moments from picking up a book from his bedside table – Little Women, the novel you had recommended a while back – when a cacophony of raised voices and door slamming arose from the hallway. He couldn’t catch much, just the measured yet strained tones from who he supposed to be doctors, and the fiery resonance from someone else. He tried to return to the pages, yearning to return the lives of the March daughters, before his door was swung open. Standing there, huffing breaths and desperately trying to tuck flyaways back to where they belonged, was you.
There was a large cut across your forehead, covered by a bandage but still bleeding. The hospital gown hung off of you and billowed when you shifted your weight. But most of all, an evident look of concern and relief flickered across your features.
“Shoto?” Your voice was small and laced with disbelief. He thought that his expression was a mimic of yours. He wanted to say your name, wanted to say he loved you and that he was so glad you’re okay. Instead, what leaves his lips is cold.
“Why are you here?” Your face twists in confusion.
“What do you mean ‘why am I here?’” You question, your tone holding an underlying hue of defense. Shoto turns his face towards the window and away from you.
“I think my words were quite clear.” Your mouth turns to a frown as you let the door close softly behind you. Shoto feels his heartbeat quicken the closer you get to his bed.
“I don’t believe you.” At your words, he scoffs, and faces you with a stony look.
“And why is that,” he asks in a monotone.
“Because I know you. And I see through you.” Shoto wills himself to stay apathetic.
“Then why,” he begins, his voice growing thick, “are you still here.” He keeps his eyes trained outside, but he feels a dip on the mattress.
“You know why,” you murmur. He feels your hand atop his, curling around it softly.
Shoto feels as if his whole body was about to cave in on itself. After everything, everything that had come to light, here you were. He was being cold and defensive, yet here you were. He was broken, bruised, and bandaged… and here you were.
Shoto held his breath as he turned to face you, bracing himself for the reality of what would hit him. There you were, your eyes and smile the kind of devastating beauty that some people can only read of in poetry. Your hands, although scabbed and callused, are soft to his touch. God, did he want to say everything that had been stored up in his brain.
“There you are,” you say, a smile growing on your lips. Your hands moved up to his face, gently cradling his bandaged cheeks in your palms. Almost reading his thoughts exactly, you brush your thumb in soothing circles. “None of this is your fault. Everyone loves you and cares about you. We’re all worrying and wondering how you’re holding up. How our friend is doing.” He sighs as he hears your words.
“I am… strong. And weak. I’m angry, and I’m scared.” Your smile turns into one of understanding. “I am everything and nothing and I don’t know what to do.” Wordlessly, he slides over on the bed – no matter how much his burns and lacerations begged him not to – to make room for you.
“None of us would know how to react to everything that has just been thrown at your face. I…” you begin, but end up shaking your head. “Don’t think of it right now. And yes, you’re happy and sad, angry and scared, everything and nothing. But you can count on us to stick by your side. I will stay with you always. How could I even think of leaving?”
Shoto wants to say that anyone could think that. That, in the end, people would realize that to stay would become too much. But, when he sees that fiery passion in your eyes and feels the way you hold his hand. And he knows you. He loves you.
“Y/N, I–” he starts.
“I know.” You whisper, tucking strands of hair that had fallen in his eyes away. “Me too.” Shoto feels weightless at your confession and the confirmation of his. No more words were exchanged between the two of you before doctors eventually pulled you back to your own room. Instead, you just lingered in the silence and focused on holding the other's hands. Holding on to each other.

Pairing: Marcus Pike x GN!Reader, established relationship
Word Count: 2k+
Warnings: Being aggressively in love with Marcus Pike, light use of pet names, getting almost stood up, feeling of romantic inadequacy, just a teensy bit meta, The Wizard of Oz spoilers?
Summary: Even the worst of days are made better with your boyfriend Marcus Pike around
A/N: Another one down for my Year of ABBA as part of the "Year Of" Creations @yearofcreation2023 February edition!!! I've been on a Marcus kick so here we are!
Tumblr media
It was a miserable day. A long, terrible, tiresome day. Even your room, your personal sanctuary, felt dreary and gloomy. The wide window offered no comfort either. The rain falling over D.C. clouded the skies. The whole world looked dark from inside your apartment. You let out a sigh of exhaustion; surrendering to the comfort of your bed. As you stare up at the blank old dirty ceiling, a soft knock is heard from the door.
"Babe?" The voice calls, slowly unlocking the door.
You perk up at that voice. Marcus…you smile to yourself, realizing your partner is at the door. Finally, using the spare key you'd given him ages ago.
"I'm here! Come on in." You call back to him.
You sit up on the bed, and make your way over to the door. The two of you practically bump into each other as you meet in the narrow doorway. Marcus looks as perfect as ever. Nicely clean shaven, hair just a bit tussled from the day, in his usual black suit and blue button up combo, a beautiful bundle of flowers in his hands.
"Woah!" Marcus says, trying not to knock you over. "Hi Baby," he says cheerfully, "I heard you had a bit of a day so I uhh thought I'd surprise you." A big smile overcomes his face as he tilts the flowers towards you. "Tada!"
Your eyes shift down to the bouquet. You find yourself giggling at the barcode still peeking out from the top. Imagining Marcus running out from the office to the corner store to grab these. Still, the colors are vibrant. Your favorite. The smell is bright. As you gaze back up at Marcus, the whole world feels brighter too.
"Do you like them? Sorry I couldn't go to the usual florist but I-" Marcus rambles on.
"No." You answer with a smile, taking the flowers in your arms. "They're perfect. You're perfect."
A tinge of red flushes his cheeks at your statement. "Far from it but I'm glad you like them. I also-" he reaches around the still open door to grab a bag from the hallway, "got take out! It's your favorite." He smiles bashfully. Suddenly concerned he'd gone a bit overboard. "I hope it's okay."
"You really are perfect, huh?" You tease, pulling him in and shutting the door behind him.
"I try." He concedes with a shrug. Moving the take out over to your table. Carefully pulling the food out of the bag.
You go to the kitchen, grabbing a vase and filling it with water. Dropping the bouquet in and rushing it over to show Marcus. "Look how pretty they are!" You can't help but smile at them. They fit perfectly. Suddenly, you could ignore all the old stains on the table top.
He chuckles at you, "They look good in here." He agrees.
You inhale, getting a sniff of the food. "That smells so good!" You exclaim, taking your seat across from Marcus.
"Ugh you're telling me! I had to stop myself from just eating it all in the car." He laughs, taking the plastic utensils in his hands.
You eagerly dig in. The flavors hitting your tongue like a firework. It was so rich. Cooked to absolute perfection. Though you know it had likely been some fifteen minutes of waiting in Marcus's car, it was somehow the perfect temperature. "Oh Marcus…I swear the food is never this good when you're not there! Are you sure you're not tipping off the chef or something?"
He scoffs, smiling at the absurdity. "Babe, the first time I went there was with you. There's no way I would have been able to do that."
You squint your eyes at him, a look of fake suspicion on your face. "I'm onto you Agent Pike."
"Yeah yeah," he rolls his eyes, taking another bite of his dinner, "eat your food!"
You continue chatting through dinner, airing out all of the day's frustrations. To which Marcus dutifully listens. He then goes on to talk a bit about his day. Nothing exciting, just writing up reports on his latest sting. Though he just so fails to mention how he left most of them piled on his desk when he heard of your bad day. Still- you cling to every word. At times it felt like Marcus could be talking about nothing at all, and you'd still be totally fascinated about it. Eventually you both finish. Marcus is quick to insist on cleaning up. Claiming as he always did that he had "brought the mess over" and therefore was responsible to clean it. Knowing that fight was yours to lose, you allow it. Watching from the table as he neatly stacks the takeout boxes before throwing them in the trash.
"All done!" Marcus claps his hands together celebratory. "Any ideas for how you'd like to spend the rest of the night?"
You pause to think, "Maybe a movie?"
He smiles with a nod. "Sounds good." He pulls on his tie, loosening it from around his neck. "Do you mind if I change first?"
"Be my guest. Your clothes are in the second drawer where they always are."
Marcus rounds the corner to your bedroom to change. You take the opportunity to get comfortable on the couch. Your body sinks into the soft cushions. A relaxed sigh leaving your body as your hands trace over the smooth material. Everything felt so cozy.
"This look alright?" Marcus steps out into the room giving you a spin. A white V-neck t-shirt on, paired with his comfy grey sweatpants.
You smile up at him, he just looks so snuggleable! "You look great. Now, come here!" You reach for him with outstretched arms.
Marcus, never one to keep you waiting, is quick to join you on the couch. Sitting besides you, pulling you into his chest in a tight embrace. "Alright, what are we watching?"
"No clue." You shrug.
"Channel flipping it is!" Taking the remote in his hand, he begins scouring for something to watch. "Ohh here's something, The Wizard of Oz?"
You watch him with wide eyes. A sense of sentimentality taking over you. "That's the first movie we saw together."
Marcus pauses for a moment, remembering. "Yeah…it is, isn't it? Though, I think we missed the opening of it."
"Which was your fault by the way!"
"Traffic was bad!" He defends.
You can't help but tease. "Excuses, excuses!" You huff as the memory of that date.
Tumblr media
You stood impatiently on a corner downtown, across from the movie theatre. Tapping your foot and struggling to stop yourself from sending another text asking if Marcus was standing you up. It'd been about ten minutes since the movie started, and another twenty minutes since Marcus was supposed to have been there. Suppressing the tear in your eye, you bite the bullet and turn to head home. A hand grabbing your waist from behind to stop you.
"Wait-" the man pleads with a voice you recognize, Marcus. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. The traffic was so bad and I- I got here as fast as I could. I didn't see your texts until I was here. And I-" he pauses.
You turned slowly, with half a mind to tell him off for almost making you cry. But you can't. As soon as Marcus was in view, all your frustrations disappeared. It didn't matter that he was late. Only that he was here. And that those big brown puppy dog eyes were all yours again.
"Fuck-" he cuts himself off, leaning in to kiss you unable to resist the urge.
You relax even further into his touch. His hands still on your waist pulling you closer. Your hands wrapping around his neck, holding him to you. "Marcus…" you murmur softly, pulling away briefly.
"I'm sorry." He repeats against your lips. "I should have been here." He kisses you once more, pulling you tight against him.
Suddenly, the traffic seemed to get a little lighter.
Tumblr media
"Marcus?" You grab his attention, your mind focusing back on the present. "What happens in the beginning anyways?"
"Of The Wizard of Oz?"
You answer with a nod.
"Well. We start out in Kansas with Dorthy who just got out of school. She's just kind of going about her day. Running into a whole little cast of characters that make up the main cast. A mean neighbor who's the witch. Lion, scarecrow, and the tinman are this group of guys who work on the farm. So on and so on. Same as the end of the film. She sings a little song and then a tornado happens. And we're in Oz!"
"There's a transition, right? When the movie switches into color?"
"Ah yes! That's the really cool part! After the tornado, she opens the door and the world outside is in color. I looked up how they did it but…it kind of ruins the magic." He says with a guilty smile.
"I know the feeling. Of Dorthy I mean. That feeling of the world suddenly being in color.'
"Yeah?" Marcus prompts you, asking for more.
You lean into his ear, with a low whisper, "The same feelings I get being around you."
He playfully pushes you off, "Okay now you're just teasing." His cheeks red with embarrassment.
"I'm serious, Marcus." You wrangle your way back into his arms. "I felt horrible earlier, but there's just something…when you're around…I don't know. My days are just so much better. It's like this aura? Or vibe?"
"A lovelight?" Marcus offers.
"Love-light?" You repeat.
"Yeah, you know…like the ABBA song?" He sighs and begins to half heartedly sing, "You must have a lovelight, everything around you is lovelight."
You chuckle, Marcus's affinity for old media never failing to entertain you.
"You've gotta know that one!"
"I do, I was just hoping you'd sing it for me." You smirk, knowing your plan worked.
He laughs, hiding his face behind his hands. "You got me."
You smile at him, moving his hands to plant a soft kiss on his lips. A smile tucked into each of your faces. "I like it." You quietly say into the kiss.
"Like what?"
"Lovelight…it fits." You nuzzle against his cheek. "You light up my whole world, Marcus. All the things you do. The things you say. Just the way you are. Everything around you is…lovelight."
His face goes red at your turn of affection. "You like it? It's not too much?" Insecurity creeps up his neck. He knows previous partners had felt suffocated by his attentiveness. But if you really liked it maybe…
"Yes. I love it. It makes me feel good. Being with you feels right. Everything about you is right." You lean, gently pressing a kiss to his cheek. "Don't let anyone dim your lovelight, Marcus."
Under you, Marcus anxiously bites his cheeks. His sweet dimples popping in and out as he tries to hide a smile. His eyes, dancing around to avoid catching yours. Though he has lots to say, "I love you…" is all he manages to vocalize.
You smile into his jaw, "I love you too Marcus. Now, I believe we have a movie to watch!" You relax back down at his side.
Marcus flashes you a quick grin. "To Oz we go." He says as he turns on the film.
The rest of the night is peaceful. Full of behind the scene facts from Marcus, and snacks you'd been saving for moments like this. After the film ends, you're both quick to agree to turn in early. Both you and Marcus are tired from your day, and know the next will be equally as tiring as well. Marcus takes his place in bed beside you, turning off the bedside lamp.
"Goodnight Baby." He gives you a soft kiss before tucking himself under the comforter.
"Goodnight Marcus." You return his notion.
As you get comfortable under the covers, you notice something. With Marcus around, even that old dirty ceiling seems a little whiter.

What do you think it means for a series like Sonic to have "heart" when it was literally created for corporate war purposes? Is the "Brand Era" thing just the logical conclusion for such a franchise?
I honestly don't know. It's hard to properly quantify when something has "heart", because it depends on how much someone believes a product to be earnest.
Does '06 have a heart? If you think the game was an ambitious piece whose potential was tragically cut short, yes. If you think the game was a rushed mess going through the motions of the clichés of the era, no.
Does Frontiers have a heart? Do you believe it's a honest attempt to refresh the series, or do you believe it's a cynical rebranding to appease the critics?
Hell, does Mania have a heart? The game is brimming with colors and energy and inventive gimmicks from fresh blood... but it's overall yet another way for SEGA to call back to a distant past, back when things were "good". So, does that count?
So I don't know, and I wouldn't try to define "heart" objectively. The name of "Brand Era" proposed by Jeb to me sounds too similar to "Meta Era" in concept, and I wouldn't adopt it. He also clearly comes from a biased standpoint, as if the Adventure era didn't also attempt to follow the trends of the time (*coughcoughshth*). But he does make a point that it seems that Sonic is being flattened to make everything, games and spinoffs, as cohesive as possible, with the exception of the movies that thankfully are allowed to be their own thing. IDW's writing bleeding into Frontiers, Prime being touted as canon, things like this.
It's true that Sonic was created so that SEGA could challenge Nintendo, a cynical goal if you want to see it that way, but that doesn't mean the brand is just Mario With Furries: Sonic survived this long because it managed to build his own identity and appeal, even as it kept chasing trends. The fear now is that Sonic will give up that identity to be nothing more than a clout chaser... and how founded this fear is depends exactly whether you see Frontiers as a passion project that got through troubled development but still sets to usher in a new era that will be more in line with what Sonic used to be, or a soulless cashgrab relying on "hey did you like botw" and "hey do you think flynn will save the franchise"

This Week in BL - Dog Days of BL but July is Incoming
June 2023 Wk 4
Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Thai
Step By Step (Tues WeTV & Gaga) ep 10 of 12 - I’m finding the time frames confusing. Still, a lovely crying kiss + a very high drama-lllama gay confession. Kitchen counter make out, my fav! The actor who plays Jeng kisses at MaxTul levels, which is to say = like a man who has actually done it before with genuine desire and is capable of portraying that on screen. (What makes MaxTul kings is that they BOTH do this.) Pat caught up, thank goodness. Also P’Jeng!!!! P’JENG!!! I love how intimate phi is when it’s been all khun prior. This is the Thai version of hyung slinging. Errotic linguistics, my fav. And ALL the work drama and homophobia fall out when you sleep with the boss. I really enjoy that the angst concerning their relationship has to do with the fact that this is an office romance. Lastly? I love Chot so much. Everyone needs a gay auntie. Also Bruce is SO DAMN GOOD. (I mean we knew he would be from Lovely Writer, but this... chef’s kiss.)
La Pluie (Sat iQIYI) ep 10 of 12 - There are enough meta-analysis on this one for me not to have to weigh in. Suffice it to say that I like what it’s trying to do, and I certainly appreciate the levels of consent and so forth but I’m not sure I actually like it as much now that we are swimming in high concept. Too much lying. I’m not sure I want my BL to make me think this hard. Also poly, boys = final answer. (Anyone else getting Color Rush flashbacks?)
Be My Favorite (Fri YouTube) ep 6 of 12 - I love Max now and forever, and I made some very bad puns in the Trash watch here. Otherwise I’m not super invested.
Dinosaur Love (Thai Sun iQIYI) ep 1 of 10 eps - from Ultimate Troop (The Yearbook people) so I shouldn’t watch this as it airs, after Remember Me? I swore never again. But there’s so little on right now, I’m falling on the pulp sword...  My initial thoughts? It’s an En of Love installment? What is going on? Why all this opening with the sides in a bar? Are we framing? Just move on to the 2 boys kissing! Don’t try to be clever, for fucks sake. Okay, good, the pulp has begun. I like soft wet-blanket Rak and his sad love life. I’m not wild about how aggressive Dino is plus insta-SINGING but I DO LIKE THAT HE’S OUT and knows what he wants which is refreshing. It’s trope filled nonsense (crash into me, instalove, sing feelings, floppy drunk, he’s in engineering, fast and bi-curious) also Dino used ter at first (how forward!) then he went to gu/mueng after rejection, while Rak uses khun & phi/pom. Love this for them. Despite my justified reservations with this production team imma stay watching. I need something on Sundays. *
Luminous Solution (Sat Gaga) ep 6fin - That’s it? Bullsheiit. No seriously. That’s my review. 3/10 I DON'T KNOW WHAT I JUST WATCHED AND NEITHER DOES IT AND I’M MAD ABOUT IT.
* I got to say, you have only yourselves to blame for Dinosaur Love’s ranking. Once upon a time, I lived happily in ignorance of the Thai film industry. And then you all kept asking me extremely intelligent questions about it. And because I am a nosy little shit, I had to figure out what was going on. And now a BL like this, which ordinarily I would just love unconditionally, is a really scary place for me, because I know too much about the production house. The evils of too much information are all true. Remain happily in ignorance, I advise you, especially where BL is concerned.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
Love Tractor (Korea Weds iQIYI) eps 7-8fin - Yechan is such a frank character it confuses all who meet him, also a truly terrible flirt. This is such a puppy/cat relationship. It was cute but it went too far into cringe for a KBL (for me). I don’t think Kdramas are good at farce (sorry), better if they stick with more subtle humor. It was a sweet ending tho, not too cheesy. Nice kiss for KBL but pretty rather than sexy. Full review below.
Tokyo in April is... AKA Shigatsu no Tokyo wa (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 3 of 8 - Oh, it’s GREAT. Damn it. There is a lot of subtext and things not being said. This is going to be one of those shows where it’s endlessly frustrating that they don’t just talk to each other. The crying first time was gut-wrenching. Ren is complicated & scarred & closed off. Kazuma is earnest & empathetic & thinks he’s unworthy - so will take whatever crumbs are handed to him. They are both giving parts of themselves away in a desperate attempt to shape themselves to the expectations they have of each other. These 2 are gonna fuck each other up while they fuck and fuck with our hearts. Japan is giving us the Bed Friends that Thailand can never even imagine. There is absolutely no guarantee this will end happily (it’s from the Eternal Yesterday people) but it is guaranteed to be painful and beautiful along the way. Oh Japan, must you? I guess you must.
Stupid Genius (Vietnam Fri YouTube) ep 4 of 6 - I’m mostly confused by the catfishing & tarot side plots. But the mains sure act like bfs. To the point of our tiny jock idiot getting gay panicked by how much bfs they are. Surprise kiss! For everyone, it turns out. Yes I laughed. What? It was pat but also… FUNNY.
Tie The Knot (Pinoy YouTube) ep 3 of 8 - The main couple is adorable, but I’m not wild about the gay bashing blackmail side story. Still, it’s the best we’ve had from the Philippines in a while so I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Vian the series (Vietnam YouTube ) ep 9 of 12 - Seriously? Bah Vinh = chemistry with EVERYONE.
Naked Dinner AKA Zenra Meshi (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 12fin - So Souta just disappears off to Singapore and doesn’t say anything to his boyfriend about it? And then comes back with the perfect plan and life for both of them? Oh Japan, must you? Review below.

It’s airing but ...
House of Stars (Thai Mon iQIYI) 12 eps - I bounced at ep 3. Will binge if told it is worth it at end.
Stay (Pinoy YouTube) 7 eps - It’s mostly English & set in LA (shudder) so I’m not bothering.
Ever After (Pinoy YouTube) 12 eps - Spies reported that it's a real mess and not a hot one.
Stay With Me ... NO I WILL NOT! And you can’t make me.
In case you missed it
BL Express reviewed The Egoest. Oh boy am I never going to watch that.
One in a Hundred - Gaga dropped all 12 episodes (c.10 min ea) at once. This is a 2020 Chinese show. It’s not BL. And it has a laugh track. I watched the first & final eps and won’t bother with the rest. DNF

I finally watched the 2022 thing I should have.
To Sir, With Love - REVIEW
This is a true lakorn with scenery chewing performances from an ensemble cast focused on family obligation and past sins, especially from the mother characters. It is a Thai tellenovella + Gone With the Wind but gay. That said? I loved it: A glorious central brother relationship (the best, made me cry), het romances, class divide + gay *gasp* main romance, the camp of it all! It’s like it was invented by drag queens. Arranged marriage, rebellion, cut sleeves, dramatic death with curses and regrets, beautiful if inaccurate costumes, secrets unraveling, cover ups, sparkle murder, sex herbs, coils within coils including snakes and death by glitter (is anything gayer on this earth?). It’s a WILD ride. It’s not BL. It’s not a romance, it’s a family drama Thorn Birds style but it does end happy for our gay boys. Like Manner of Death I’m struggling to rate something on a BL scale when it patently isn’t a BL. I think I have to give it exactly what I gave that show, 7/10
I loved it, but not as a BL.

Zenra Meshi - REVIEW
AKA Naked Dinner
I have to be honest, I didn’t really like much about this show. The central premise was too odd and the main character too clumsy & slow on the uptake. I like the food, but there have been food-set BLs before that failed to meet expectations. Too many of them. This one joined that throng. Good ending tho. 7/10

Love Tractor - REVIEW
Most of this country-set BL had me feral for the beautiful broken city boy and his hot young farmer. Hyung romance, puppy/cat pairing, open frankness meets jaded reserve, language play, water hose frolicking, only one bed, all my favorite tropes. This show was basically a light-weight Restart After Come Back Home and I’m not even slightly mad about that.
But (and you knew there was a “but” coming) something about the cringe of the final 2 eps and the impermanence of the ending (both of which highlight the fact that ultimately these 2 are I’ll-suited: too different & too far apart) left me with the feeling that they probably won’t last as a couple. However, in this case, rare for me, I forgive it this finale for my love of the rest.
I did dither a lot though, it’s not an 8 but not a 9 either. Better than Love Mate (8/10) not as good as The New Employee (9/10) but in the end I’m value adding up for the premise and the cast, giving it a 9/10.
RECOMMENDED
(Gotta say, because this is rare for me, that this had a great OST. Not the credit music but the refrain, Rainbow.)
Next Week Looks Like This:

July 2023 Supposedly...
7/3 Be Mine SuperStar (Thai Mon Viki) 12 eps - JaFirst whipping boy/spoiled prince, obsession, celebrity/mundane. Third-year film student Punn (Ja) gets an internship on the set of a drama. He’s come to learn, but "what lights his passion even more than the work" is leading man Achi, Thailand's sweetheart. Adapted from the novel “The Superstar and the Puppy on Set” (พี่พระเอกกับเด็กหมาในกอง) by Orpheus, cast includes Benjamin Brasier (2moons2), Bosston Suphadach (UWMA), Jo Kavinpat (War of Y), Kokliang (TharnType). Directed by David Bigander (Bite Me) which makes me nervous. Maybe he'll do better with an adaptation?
7/6 Minato's Laundromat Season 2 AKA Minato Shouji Coin Laundry Season 2 (Japan Thu ????) 12 eps - The story is a continuation of Minato & Shin's love story, and it picks up 10 years after the events of season 1 but the characters don't seemed to have grown at all. Very Japan of you, Japan.
7/7 Stay By My Side (Taiwan Fri Gaga) 10 eps -  Gu Bu-Xia has the ability to hear ghosts, except when he is around his new roommate Jiang Chi. So he starts to find ways to approach Jiang Chi. But is it  the ghosts or Jiang Chi’s charm?
7/8 Low Frequency (Thai Sat YouTube?) 8 eps - ghost boyfriend, celebrity/mundane - Mon's life as a spirit-seeing interior decorator is full of headaches. On good days, he helps settle problems for his relative, who is a star manager. But then he gets involved with the spirit of Thames, a famous young actor who is in a coma.
7/9 Hidden Agenda (Thai Sun GMMTV YouTube) 12 eps - JoonDunk are back. Zo, a college freshman whose never been in love, decides to change it by making the college’s star Nita as his gf. He approaches Joke, Nita’s ex, for dating advice. What he fails to realize is that Joke has had his eyes on him for a long time and uses this opportunity to approach Zo. TMS 2.0.
7/15 Laws of Attraction (Thai Sat ????)  Stars the pair from To Sir With Love and with the same production team, cryptic description, but it seems to be Manner of Death esk.
7/19 Wedding Plan (Thai Wed YouTube & iQIYI)  - It's Mame and she's coming for our GL. She's such a misogynist IMAGINE what we will get with a GL? It's going to be absolute carnage. To crane your neck as you drive by the car wreck or not... that is the question. Me? I'm wallowing in the guts.
7/20 Jun & Jun (Korea Thu Viki) - From 2022 (TutorYim rumored to cameo) this office romance features 2, yes 2! Bls. Seme looks aggressive, we in classic yaoi territory. There is an idol involved. Past failed flirts. I am very excited about this one.
2023 forthcoming BL master post (see comments, some are inaccurate, NOT KEPT UPDATED)

Face it, Sonic was running on fumes during the mid 2000s with one blunder after another. Sonic became an utter joke all because Sega kept on screwing things up, with crappy motion control games, failed rushed products and general incompetence. Then there was the stupid meta era with its crappy jokes, half-baked games, wii exclusives like Colors, making Sonic a werewolf because some nimrod was throwing spaghetti at the wall. I fail to see why the games are so superior and should be the only continuity when Sega those games fucks things up so many times. The only good games in the last decade was Generations and Mania as they paid homage to sonics past and treated it with honor. Both Forces and frontiers are hollow empty games.
Early-mid 2000's games had their merits. I personally think that 2010 - 2016'ish was the darker age to me personally.
Franchise has been on the upturn since then sans IDW.

Chasing Shadows (7)
AO3 -> first, last, next
Fandoms: Danny Phantom (DP) / DC universe
Summary:  THIS  IS A CROSSOVER.  As Bruce Wayne begins to slowly recover from the loss of his son, two   separate mysteries open up old wounds. Who is the unknown leaving clues   hinting at a return to Gotham, and who is the phantom pretending to be   his lost son? Is it just a coincidence they’re active in Gotham at the   same time? Or are they connected?
Warnings: rated T for violence, mentions of death, and questionable mental health
Parings: none

“Batman!”
Bruce glanced to his left to see Phantom rushing towards him moving through the tight alley as if there was no debris or criminals with weapons before silently coming to a stop. Unlike the other times he’d seen the meta, the boy had seemingly paid no attention to his surroundings. He also kept to his right while trying to keep his hands still. Definitely nervous, but why?
“Phantom.” He greeted as he punched another one of the low-level grunts still trying to fight him. With his associations with Red Hood now well documented, Bruce was teetering on going back to his original plan of capturing him. But he hadn’t harmed anyone and had even helped Stephanie escape Black Mask. Whatever his goals, he hadn’t strayed from attempting to help them. “To what do I owe this pleasure?”
“Did nothing come through on the comms? Don’t answer that. That can be saved for later.” The teen shook his head before letting someone with a bat harmlessly pass through him. The criminal in question dropped the weapon and fled in fear. “We need to go!” His voice was becoming frantic.
Pressing a finger to his comm as he knocked out another gang member, he attempted to reach Barbara, but he heard nothing on the other end. Not only was it strange, but it was also worrying. “Explain,” he instructed the teen, who had started dodging gang members.
“Spoiler is in trouble. You need to go to her.”
“What happened?”
“She’s injured. We need to go, now!” There was desperation in his voice he hadn’t heard before. Unless he was acting, Phantom believed the injury was severe enough that Stephanie couldn’t handle it herself. “Hood’s trying to help, but he doesn’t think he has what he needs to properly treat her.”
“The Red Hood is there? And you just left her with him?” Dodging another blow, he threw a bola towards the three that were approaching Phantom. The teen let it harmlessly pass through him and tie around two of the criminals. The third tried to grab Phantom, but unlike every other time he’d seen the boy interact with the various criminals and rogues of Gotham, he jumped out of the way before punching the guy. It was a move achingly familiar.
“She’s a lot safer with him than she was with Black Mask.” Insult colored his voice. They really needed to find out the reason why Phantom was so loyal to Red Hood, especially after he came to them about Hush. Whatever issue that caused that temporary break in trust between them had seemingly been resolved. “But are you seriously going to continue messing around with these idiots?”
If Stephanie was in trouble like Phantom stated, he needed to finish this and get moving. However, there was a distinctive possibility he would be led into a trap. He needed more information.
“You’ve got to be kidding me! You’re seriously going to finish this first? Right. Guess I have to do something drastic.” As he said that, the air around them seemed to cool until the breaths of everyone, save for Phantom became visible. The strange glow around him intensified as his appearance seemed to blur. The gang members, many of whom had already become uneasy by the teen’s presence, slowed their assault. Bruce caught the barest hint of a smile before the teen let himself fall into the ground.
The gang members immediately began to back away, some muttering about spirits and ghosts. That wasn’t too surprising as many of the criminals of Gotham were superstitious. Yet, he wasn’t sure exactly what Phantom was planning.
Seconds later, Phantom appeared behind one of the lieutenants and reached his arm through the man to grab his gun and pull it harmlessly through the man. Once it was out of the man, he held it up as if he was presenting the end of a trick before putting it on the ground. The man who experienced it, grabbed at his chest to make sure he was whole before fleeing an abject horror. The others, having witnessed it, also fled.
Satisfied with himself, he gave a slight nod before turning back to Bruce. “Now that that’s done, follow me. I need to get you to Spoiler.”
“Give me the coordinates.”
At the request, the meta seemed to blankly stare at him for a moment. “If you’re going to follow, why…? Wait, you don’t trust me? Unreal.” He shook his head and gave him the location and which room Stephanie was supposedly in. “Just don’t attack Hood on sight.” He vanished from sight.
As he began his trek, he attempted to radio the others. There was still silence from Barbara, but Tim, Cass, Dick, and Selena all checked in. Everyone, save for Dick, who’d been grazed by a bullet, were unharmed. Stephanie was also suspiciously silent which lent credence to what Phantom said, but it could also mean she was captured. Still uncertain whether or not he was walking into a trap, he requested Tim to meet up with him and for either Dick or Cass to check on Barbara. Selena agreed to check on Dr. Thompson and let her know that he might be bringing someone.
The building he found himself entering was a three-story office building near one of the railyards. Judging by its appearance, it hadn’t been used for clear work for years. As he located an unlocked window, Tim reached his side. Upon entering the building, he sent Tim to clear the upper floors as he made his way to where Phantom stated Stephanie could be found.
Entering the basement, he found the Red Hood kneeling in front of Stephanie, who appeared to be sitting unrestrained on a chair. Instead of listening to his desire to attack the man, Bruce took another moment to examine the scene in front of him.
The former Robin was gripping her pants as if she was in pain. Her left sleeve had been rolled up, and a make-shift splint had been placed on it. Her left pant leg was also rolled up, and it appeared Red Hood was finishing tying bandages to it. Bloody gauze and an open medical kit rested beside his boot. Whatever happened, it was unlikely Hood was the cause.
Steph’s head snapped up when she noticed him. “B, you came.” Although she tried to sound strong, her voice held notes of pain and relief. “Black Mask got the better of me. He got away. I’m sorry.”
When she shifted, Hood gently smacked her uninjured leg. “Stay put. That leg needs proper attention. Standing on it isn’t going to do you any favors.” Even through the modulator, concern could be heard in his voice. Hood then stood and turned slightly to better face him. Though his face was hidden, Bruce could see the tension in his shoulders and how his fists balled. He wasn’t happy to see him.
Briefly, Bruce noted that the man’s jacket sleeves were rolled up, exposing his forearms. There were no signs of the strange green marks from Dick’s video. They were unlikely to be tattoos then.
“Move away from her.” Although he knew a confrontation was going to happen with the man eventually, it wasn’t currently the time. Not waiting for the other man to make a move, he rushed forward and knelt to check on her. “What happened?”
“She just told you, Black Mask,” Hood responded before Stephanie could. Even through the modulator, Bruce could hear the anger in his voice. “I sent Phantom to fetch you at least fifteen minutes ago.” he hissed causing his modulator to make a strange crackling sound.
Electing to ignore Red Hood’s words, Bruce focused on Stephanie. Other than her wrist and leg, her injuries appeared minor, just bruises and cuts. The way her arm was splinted suggested either a bad sprain or a possible break. As for her leg, Bruce wasn’t entirely certain of the damage. There was evidence of gauze hidden under the expertly done bandages with some bloodied gauze on the floor near her feet. As he finished his checks, Tim radioed he’d cleared the other floors and would be joining them momentarily.
“Word of advice, Batman,” Hood warned as Bruce stood. “Sionis is dead set on killing anyone who gets in his way. If you want to keep these little birds alive, keep them off the streets.”
“Don’t worry about us. We’ll be able to handle anything.”
At the sound of Tim’s voice, Hood turned to find the boy standing in the doorway. Both of them seemed to stare at each other for a moment before Hood turned to face Bruce. The man’s fists tightened, and if Bruce wasn’t mistaken, green markings were beginning to form on what was visible of his skin. “How many children are you going to brainwash into being your good little soldiers.” He turned back to Tim and gestured at Stephanie. “Black Mask shot her in the leg before deciding he wanted to finish the torture session I interrupted the other day. Between what he was planning to do and the apparent lack of care Batman,” Hood’s modulator seemed to crackle as he hissed the title, “gave about checking in on her, there’s a good chance she would have been dead before anyone came to check on her.” His gaze seemed to return to Bruce. “Did you learn anything from your first dead bird?”
“You don’t have the right to speak of him,” Bruce warned as he stood and protectively hovered in front of Stephanie. The more Bruce and the others interacted with him, the more it seemed he was acting as an avenger for Jason.
Even through the helmet, it seemed as if Hood rolled his eyes. “Your priorities are skewed. Spoiler is injured and in need of medical attention, and you want to pick a fight. You had a chance to prove me wrong and choose the kids over fighting a crimi... Hmm?” He paused mid-word. If Bruce wasn’t mistaken, he was listening to someone speaking on a comm. “He what? Shit. Stay put. I’m on my way.”
Without another word to Bruce or the two teens in the room, Hood turned and seemed to harmlessly pass through the wall and vanished. Bruce immediately went over to the spot to check for evidence of a hologram or some type of cloaking, but he touched solid brick. It was still possible there was some sort of cloaking that ended when Hood passed through the opening and closed the entrance. However, the action reminded Bruce too much of Phantom’s powers for his liking.
“Robin…” he couldn’t finish his thought as a loud booming sound seemed to rock the entire building. An explosion, but where? It felt like it was within the city limits, but not close enough to do damage to the building they were in. Was that why Hood left? Had someone, possibly Phantom, tipped him off? That was likely, but for now, he needed to find out the specifics.
“Oracle, come in. Oracle.” The only answer he received was static. That was concerning. He needed to get to the Clocktower. Turning, he found Tim slowing helping Stephanie off the chair. “Robin, get Spoiler back to the cave. Make sure to tell Agent A to call Agent L while you’re on your way.”
“Don’t worry about me. I’ll be able to get back on my own.” Steph tried to put on a brave face, but it was ruined when she jostled her injured leg. “You’re going to need backup.”
“Between myself, Nightwing, Catwoman, and our other allies in the city, I’ll be fine.” He let his voice soften to try to convey he wanted her to worry about her injuries instead of him. Was this lack of concern for herself what Hood meant when he called her and Tim soldiers? He would have to ponder that later. “Robin, I might need you to be my eyes in the city if Oracle is out of commission. If you learn anything, let me know immediately.”
“Gotcha!”
As Bruce rushed from the building, he hoped Tim would listen and take Spoiler to the Cave. The last thing he needed at the moment would be the two of them getting involved in a situation that could result in Stephanie’s injuries worsening.
Using a grapple to take to the air of Gotham, he tried reaching Oracle again. When she once again didn’t answer, he tried Dick. His son’s answer was brief, but at least it confirmed he was alive, even if he requested assistance at the Clocktower.
As he came closer to the building, he found smoke slowly dissipating both in the air and the streets. As he cleared another building, he nearly missing the timing with his grapple. The Clocktower was gone. The remains of it were blackened and scattered on the streets below. Had it been destroyed by one of the rogues of Gotham? Or had Barbara caused the detonation? There was too much he didn’t know.
Getting closer, he could hear the sounds of a battle. Moving around to the side where the entrance of the Clocktower was, he found Dick, Selena, and Dick’s acquaintance, Tarantula, fighting what they had dubbed ‘Scarebeast’. The Penguin once dosed the Scarecrow with something, they were still trying to determine if it was a variant of Langstrom’s serum or something else, turning him into a hulking monster. They had hoped it had been a one-time thing, but the effects of it apparently still lingered. This was problematic as instead of needing some form of container for his fear toxin, in this form, he was able to secrete it from his body. He was also much stronger than normal and deceptively fast. They had to be extra careful as a result.
Seeing an opening, he threw one of his exploding batarangs at the creature, allowing the others to fall back and regroup. There were already noticeable burn marks on his body suggesting he’d been caught up in the explosion of the Clocktower. Good, that meant he was already injured and possibly weakened. If they kept hitting him from a safe distance, they should be able to wear him out enough for him to collapse.
The problem was Selena was more of a melee fighter and had no desire to stay back. Tarantula also wasn’t interested in fighting from a far. That left Bruce and Dick to monitor for signs of fear toxin release and alert the others.
Dick hated how long the battle with Scarebeast was taking. They needed to find Barbara. She had been in the Clocktower before it exploded, and with her line going dead, he wasn’t sure if she had been in the building or not. But due to the criminal’s transformation, his strength and endurance without had exponentially increased without affecting his intelligence making the fight that much harder.
There was also the concern on whether or not the Clocktower would collapse. He could hear the unsettling creaks and groans of the building as the damaged supports reached their limits. Sure, they were currently outside, but they were fighting at its base. Over the years, Dick learned just how dangerous being too close to a collapsing building could be.
At one point, Tarantula got a little too close, giving Scarebeast an opening. However, a black and white blur appeared at her side right before the attack seemed to harmlessly pass through her. Phantom had arrived. Instead of thanking the kid, Tarantula immediately scooted away from him. The woman was a former FBI agent, but Phantom’s presence seemed to deeply unsettle her.
The teen’s presence also seemed to bother Scarebeast as he immediately tried to attack him. When the attack and the next three didn’t connect, Scarebeast seemed to give Phantom a curious look. According to Bruce, Phantom’s first properly documented appearance was during a fight with Scarecrow. While the criminal had heard Phantom speak before, they weren’t sure if he ever laid eyes on him prior to this instance.
“Phantom, fall back!” Bruce shouted as Scarebeast began releasing toxin. Phantom was an unknown when it came to its effects, and on top of that, he was a meta which automatically made him harder to subdue if he got affected by it.
The warning was too late. As the teen stumbles as the toxin began to take effect, he couldn’t get out of the way of the next attack. But it never hit. A shot rang out, and the Scarebest shrieked in rage as he cradled his arm. A few more shots rang out, hitting near the man’s feet, causing him to back away as Phantom fell backwards and shivered.
Quickly glancing behind him, he noted a glint off a red helmet. The Red Hood was watching.
“Don’t come near me!” Phantom yelled as he scrambled to his feet and backed away. The temperature in the immediate area dropped, causing Dick to involuntarily shiver as his breath misted. “I’m sorry I didn’t listen. Please!” He raised his arms as if he was shielding himself. “Don’t give me to that monster! I don’t… I don’t want to die again!” His voice cracked as spikes of ice began sprouting from the ground around him and quickly spread in an uneven circle around him.
Scarebeast chuckled, a strange and unsettling sound worsened by the rustling of the straw on him, before attempting to strike Phantom again. As another shot rang out, hitting him once again in the arm, ice began in casing his feet. Bruce used the moment to use an exploding batarang. Before the smoke cleared, Dick used the distraction to activate the electricity on his escrima sticks before rushing to Scarebeast’s back and tasing him. It seemed to finally do the trick as he slumped and slowly began shrinking in size.
Dick barely had time to move as the ice around Phantom increased. The one thing he didn’t want to do was risk getting trapped, especially when he was nursing an injury on his leg. Even if it was just a graze, bullet wounds hurt, and after everything that happened in the last couple days, he was exhausted.
“You don’t happen to have the antidote on you?” he asked as he retreated to Bruce’s side while trying to ignore the increasing frequency of the groans from the Clocktower’s supports. “And since when could he manipulate ice?”
“It seems to be a spontaneous evolution of his powers,” Bruce replied as he pulled out a vial from his utility belt.
“Are you crazy?” Tarantula snapped at him. “The building isn’t going to last for much longer.”
“You can leave.” The hint of anger in Bruce’s voice caught her off guard. “Right now, Phantom is a danger to himself and everyone else due to the fear toxin. We don’t know the extent of this new ability.”
Bruce ignored her and gave him a slight not. Most other people wouldn’t understand what that meant, but Dick had been Bruce’s partner for years. He wanted him to distract Phantom so he could sneak up and use the antidote. Thankfully, the teen seemed to have the frozen in fear type and hadn’t move too much from his spot in the middle of the ice. Thankfully, the giant spikes of ice had stopped forming, but frost was still spreading across the ground. If this continued, there was a real possibility he could freeze the entire square and accidentally harm someone in the process.
“I hate to say it, but I think she’s right,” Selena grabbed Bruce’s arm preventing him from running forward. “The boy can pass through objects, right? He should be fine, but we won’t if we don’t get out of the way.”
He was about to retort and explain that he refused to let another young hero die, but his words were cut off as someone ran in between him and Bruce. “Hold that for me,” the person called as he threw a helmet into his hands and swiped the antidote from Bruce. Glancing down, Dick realized that he was holding a familiar red helmet.
“Ah hell,” he muttered to himself as he and Bruce ran after Red Hood. As they followed, Phantom responded to them by causing more ice spikes to shoot out towards them.
Hood surprised Dick by showing off his athletics. He dodged around the ice spikes with little trouble which continue to push forward. The strange thing was Hood’s movements were familiar, and it wasn’t just him who believed that. Tim had rigorously reviewed the footage from his first encounter with Hood when he was impersonating Jason and mentioned he saw similarities. Though Bruce surprisingly brushed it off, Dick couldn’t. He was certain he helped train this man.
When he was just a few yards away, Hood slowed his pace and gently called out to Phantom. The teen recognized him, even through the toxin-induced hallucinations.
“Stay back! They’ll catch you too!” he called out as more ice shot out towards Bruce. The fear in his voice made Dick’s heart break, but what was he seeing? Who was going to catch him? While they needed this to end as quickly as possible, sometimes the hallucinations gave hints about the past. He hated that he wanted to hear more.
“No one’s gonna catch me. We’ll get out of this together.”
“Hood… no, you’re not him! You’re working with them!” Crap. Did Phantom see the antidote? But instead of the spikes, ice started forming on Hood’s jacket.
“You need to pull back!” Dick shouted as he dodged more ice. “You won’t be able to help him if you get frozen solid.”
Ignoring him, Hood closed the gap and knelt in front of Phantom. Ice continued to race across the material of his closes and an unsettling blue tint was starting to become noticeable on his visible skin. “It’s alright, Dove. Listen to my voice and close your eyes. You can feel my presence, right?” What did that mean? Could Phantom sense all of them?
“I… yes.”
Taking the temporary distraction, Hood quickly scooped the teen into a hug. Not liking the movement, Phantom screamed as walls of ice began forming. Hood used the distraction to inject the antidote into his arm and continued to hold onto him while it took effect. As Phantom went limp, the tension from Hood’s shoulders lessened. “I told you to stay away from the criminals.” An unidentifiable emotion filled his voice. It definitely wasn’t anger, but it wasn’t pity either.
“Huh…?” Dick was surprised to hear Phantom’s voice. Even with the antidote, it usually took at least a few minutes before it took full effect. “J…Err… Hood? What happened?” He glanced over the man’s shoulder towards him and Bruce. “You’re covered in ice! Did… did I do that?”
“Don’t worry about it.” Hood stood and helped Phantom stand.
“But I could have killed you!”
“The cold isn’t a bad way to go. You don’t feel a thing. Much better than explosions or fire.” That statement was too matter of fact for Dick’s liking. “We need to get you out of here. Nightwing, I’d appreciate if you gave me my helmet back.” When Hood glanced back towards him, Dick dropped the thing.
He knew that face. Sure, he was older, but he couldn’t forget him. Especially since his image frequently haunted his dreams, screaming for help. Sure, he’d seen the footage of the battle in the cemetery, but this was different. He wasn’t looking at him through a lens. This was real, but there was no way it was possible. “Jason.”

Notes:
It was the War Games arc where Stephanie was shot and "died." As you can see, I've made the executive decision not to do that this time.
Scarebeast is a thing. Apparently the Penguin hired Scarecrow as something of a body guard during As the Crow Flies and injected him with something that turned him into a monstrous creature. Apparently the effects were dormant after that story line until he got caught up in the explosion at the Clocktower during the War Games arc. A weird thing about this transformation is that he can release fear toxin from his body instead of needing a delivery device. I'm honestly surprised he hasn't shown up more.
