just watched Colossal (2016) and i think the thing i enjoyed about it the most (and that surprised me about it) was how well it seemed to flip the "new york socialite/business woman returns to her small hometown and falls in love with a simple down to earth guy" narrative, common in so many romcoms, on its head. obviously, the main focus is on recovery from alcoholism, but there's clearly other prominent themes at work here. more under the cut:
i've had another person tell me it feels like Oscar's evil turn part way through the film came out of nowhere, and it did for me too. but i think that's because the audience is being lulled into safety by these common tropes. the nice guy, helping Gloria get back on her feet by offering her friendship, a job, and furniture. and meanwhile, she's so detatched that she can't even remember most things about this small town she came from! >:( and he's been keeping track of her success too! wow! he must care a lot!
but, you see it, don't you? the way he's establishing control over a vulnerable woman through employment and favors. the way he keeps her vulnerable by enabling her alcoholism. the remote stalking of her, trying to keep tabs on her. the gaslighting. the way he reacts to the appearance of the creature in Soule, not with shock and dread but by mentioning off-hand how good it is for business at his bar. all of it was just cleverly disguised breadcrumbs hiding in plain sight until it's too late.
it reveals how much violent and abusive misogyny is behind these tropes that we take for granted, a conversation that has been getting more and more mainstream as time has gone on. for its problems, i honestly think it's a pretty clever film with fairly feminist messaging, especially for the time it came out. def recommended

@thealmightyemprex @ariel-seagull-wings @themousefromfantasyland @piterelizabethdevries @princesssarisa @grctw there are different kinds of villains out there. You have your cool villains, your tragic villains, your sympathetic villains/antagonists. This list is comprised of villains who get under my skin in a very personal way. I see a pattern here - abusive parents and partners, manipulators whose control can come as much from words and reputation as outward acts of violence. Even the most overtly violent and obviously vile of them are enabled by their stations - the family patriarch, the cog in the imperialist machine, etc.
