#I've been holed up in my apartment for 2 weeks cause of covid haven't had the strength to go outside #and i hadn't seen my flock in a long while cause hunters have been shooting up the woods #i assumed the worst tbh for these guys #i went out back to get some air and i saw one in the distance #she made this curious click click soune and i did it back #then suddenly here comes the calvary #and they start making these rapid fire pewpew sounds but with an extra squeak #i think that noise is code for “this person is safe” or “safe human” #cause they ran right up to me and were checking me out as if they had been worried #I'm not trying to anthropomorphize them just explaining turkeys are very social creatures #and if you pay attention to their tics and the way they communicate things each flock has its own system #these guys are way different than the tribe at my grams place #and they have their own unique little clicks and sounds that signal different things #if you're friendly to them give them space and entice them with some bird seed every once in a while they enjoy seeing you #that big one with the bread in his beak took a slice from a neighbor and was showing it off #like “lookie lookie i stole this!” #lmao

Finally jumped into my Turkey paper so the worst (the utterly paralyzing anxiety before and then complete bewilderment as I read through 60 FUCKING PAGES OF NOTES trying to remember wtf I was even going to say) is over

Have literally just been going through the notes and putting stuff into a google doc as I go, waiting on structure to emerge as I do (and it's starting to come together now)

but since I took 60 FUCKING PAGES OF NOTES just getting through the first half already has me at 9.5 pages of writing for a paper that's supposed to be 25ish

(all of which, btw, explicitly ties the "New Turkey" agenda to Sevres Syndrome, Ottoman imperial nostalgia, and AKP attempting to turn the country into a one-party nation with Erdogan as its sultan-esque figurehead-- the outcome I proposed originally and which my professor told me wasn't "accurate," putting me into this backpedaling position in the first place. If it's not accurate, then he had better start buying stamps, because many authors in many journals for DECADES have been contributing their opinions to a large body of work that says is IS accurate, so he will have a lot people to set right.)

Also I already hated Erdogan but now he's personally responsible for me even having had to write this paper, so I'm gunning for him on a purely intimate scholarly hatred as well as international ethical/political one

I am thrilled to see that Luxembourg is going to be returning to Eurovision next year! I almost didn’t believe it at first until I saw the source was the official site - it seemed so out of the blue! The contest is always better the more countries that are involved, and I’m super excited to see what they’ll send. I do hope they focus more on local talent than they used to back in the day though! Also, hopefully this is a sign the EBU is serious about getting previous participants involved again - I’d love for more to follow!

There is a deer carcass I want to post up at to watch the vultures and ravens but the wildfire smoke is so thick that I can’t justify it—even with a mask I can feel it impacting me. I just want to unwind from my work day amongst scavengers, is that too much to ask for!?

#even if you didn't know what he was up to over in turkey it was immediate from the get-go that he was struggling #i'm livid about how little and uneven the support is for players in football #it's gotten better than before and players and teams talk about seeing psychologists more openly #but god. there's still such a lack of understanding or a safety net #when there SHOULD be one because players start YOUNG and they need to be protected nurtured and educated #(i'm saying the educated part because countless retired players talk about how they're not set up for their lives after their careers end) #the extreme pressure that the players are under and the unprecedented media/social media scrutiny are enough to make anyone cave #but these are kids who start with that pressure and some of them make it to the first team when they're still in high school #not to mention that this is the sport that beyond any other sport draws people from all backgrounds #including underprivileged ones and less stable ones #and that's common. and add what dele went through on top of that #god. anyway. really glad that dele did his interview even if it didn't come at the right time

I tamed a wild flock of 200 on my grandma's property in 2018. They still interact with my family. Now I'm doing the same on a small group of turkeys at my place 😂 10 months ago they wouldn't let me get this close nor "talk" to them.

#they're not common here but they apparently do come through while migrating #usually the birds of prey I see are red-tailed hawks and turkey vultures #though I believe I saw a kestrel recently too
