I agree with you that Laura is actually cautious (and sometimes conflict avoidant) though a true formidable player. But I'm curious what chaotic play does mean to you? Is there a line where bold choices crosses over into that? I'm really trying to be mindful as a player myself, to not play it too safe but also not go to the other extreme.

I think that defining "chaos" is probably a task best left to some ancient Greek forum and not me, but I see "chaotic" to be a deeply negative playstyle. You should not ever strive, in D&D or similar games, to be chaotic as a player; you should be collaborative, even if your character is chaotically aligned in an alignment system.

I feel the example I can give is like...there is a long-defunct podcast I really liked called Master Manual, aimed at Dungeon Masters, and they fielded questions about like, players who fully wanted to abandon the quest and become potato farmers or something, and that's the closest I can give you. Honestly that's not even great, in that all the players were allied and seemingly having fun, but as a DM I'd find that chaotic.

To me, a chaotic player is someone who doesn't follow the logic of the table - you are part of a party, you are trying to play the game of D&D which means picking up at least some of what the DM is putting down, and you are working with your fellow players. That doesn't mean you have to play a pleasant character, or follow every plot hook, or never have conflict - you should! But a chaotic player is the kind who is just kind of doing everything they feel like in the moment without any regard to the social consequences of "being an asshole in a game you are playing with your friends."

So: you could make a bold choice and push it too far if it's like, "randomly kill an innocent NPC ally because you thought it would be funny," but I think it's genuinely hard to play chaotic if you have any shred of respect for the other people at the table.

just finished interviewing bellini for one of my finals in my comedy class and i'm losing my mind over bellini going on a tangent about how if he were grading my comedy over the past year he would give me an A+. like i didn't ask him to say that and it wasn't related to any of the questions i asked but you better believe i'm leaving that in to be like see professor? BELLINI gave me an A+!!!
