At Princeton's Commencement in 1861 (then operating officially under the name "The College of New Jersey"), as the Princeton Standard reported, "The matter of most interest is in inquiries made in regard to old friends, many of whom are now enemies. A very large number of Princeton graduates, and nine of the present graduating class, hold different positions in the Confederate army."

Out of the 125 students in the Class of 1861, only 50 remained.
