I got a lovely and funny comment on one of my fics that was basically "it's people like you that are the reason I'm single, because the way you write them communicating and taking care of each other sets the standard" and it made me giggle a little.

But also! If you meet someone and they care about you, they'll learn to communicate with you in a way that works and feels right for both (or however many!) of you! And even the best communicators can mess it up on occasion, so don't get discouraged if you need to work at it. Also also, there's not one thing wrong with being single!

In the meantime, please continue to enjoy stories about your faves making it work, and please continue leaving lovely little notes for the people who wrote them, and/or yelling at them for raising the bar or making you Feel Things; it brings joy and helps make the words go.

I try not to buy into the whole AI/bot panic for a multitude of reasons, but I recently found out about something that really bothered me.

Some of my friends in the Lois & Clark fandom have been receiving comments from bots on their newest stories. I will not be using a cut as I feel it's important for people to see them (but let me know if it gets too annoying on your dashes):

How can you tell these comments were written by bots:

They're all guest comments (notice the lack of a link under the name).

They contain absolutely no mentions of the specific fandom, characters or events in the story, just generic compliments. (Notice how one says "the protagonists" instead of the characters' names! Who writes like that!!)

The assumption is that the bots leave comments so that they can pass as human and not get flagged as bots. Perhaps it also serves as training for them, teaching them how to pass through spam filters.

The thing is - regardless of how one might feel re: AI text bots being trained on fanfiction, leaving fake comments on stories is disingenuous, offensive and unethical. We write to connect with and reach out to an audience that can understand our stories and share in our love for the characters and storylines. If we wanted empty compliments, we could write them ourselves. :P

Obviously, I don't have the power to convince the people who create these bots to leave us the fuck alone, or make them understand that it's shitty to play with people's feelings like that and reduce their artistic efforts to a bot training ground. So instead I tell you, my fellow fanfiction aficionados:

REGISTER ON AO3. Stuff like that makes people lock their fics to keep the bots away. If you haven't got an account yet, now is the time.

LEAVE COMMENTS. Balance out the fake comments with your own, genuine ones. Even a simple "I liked this!" can make a writer smile.

REACH OUT. Don't let fandom become a place where no one knows what's real and what's not. Make an effort, make friends. We're all as shy and weird as you, I promise.

DON'T USE AI FOR YOUR FANFIC ENDEAVOURS. Don't feed it stories, don't make it write your stories and comments for you. Just don't.

Personally, having seen that, I'm tempted to lock my fics even though I don't really want to. We'll see.

I am terrible at bookmarking, but my first one is from 2012. I think it was so I could find the story to finish it. I might have to read it again and see why I saved it.

B5 Which story have you read more than any other? How many times?

This is impossible to answer because I fandom bounce a lot and I also binge read. If I find a story I really love, I might read it every day for a week and then not again for a year or so.

Overall it was probably a Shadowhunters Malec fic that has been deleted from AO3 (I am so devastated). If I go with Roswell, I would have to say this fic, and I've read it more times than I can count. It has one of my favorite lines from any Malex fic ever, and I will never recover from it: “Learned a long time ago I don’t have limits when it comes to you, Alex.”

Again a little hard to answer because I read in so many fandoms. I don't like toxic pairings in general. With Roswell, Malex is my main paring so I won't read Alex or Michael as endgame with someone else, but if a Malex fic has them with someone else as long as Malex is endgame, I can read it.

So I am on a Hockey RPF kick right now. The fic I commented on is locked so I won't link to it, but it's one I've been rereading a lot lately. I don't always comment in fandoms I am not active in (I do leave kudos for almost everything I read), but this fic just hits something for me emotionally that I wanted to let the author know. This was my comment:

This has become one of my go to comfort fics. I love it so much. It is really beautiful and breaks my heart and heals it at the same time.

Somehow, I'm having the fanfic author's experience I've always wanted. The dream. Where I have poured my heart and soul into writing a thing, and people are reading the thing! And commenting! Sometimes at length!

The stories I've written before were either a tiny drop in a huge and talented fandom (BBC Sherlock; MCU), or for a niche corner of a fandom (Voltron's Yeehaw AU). I got some comments, each one precious and treasured. (Bless every one of you.) I was happy.

Today, I'm ecstatic! I've never had this kind of reception. I don't know if it's because I'm writing a rare pair, because Star Wars is popular right now, or if we've had an increase in awareness of how vital comments are for artists (or something else). I've been blown away.

A positive reception is meaningful to any artist, and I value every comment. The impact of the current ones, however, is huge. Because my humble Mandalorian fanfic is what I used to break a miserable, nearly 5-year stretch of not writing. If it had been received with silence, my heart would have broken. Instead, I feel bolstered, thrilled, and like a writing superhero.
