—————
As he rummaged through the kitchen cabinets with purpose, Sanji felt a wry smile pulling on his lips. He had never thought he would stand in this kitchen ever again. How many years had it been since he last touched this stove? Thirteen, fourteen years?
It was honestly a marvel this stove even was still here.
They had all this money, all this knowledge, and they couldn’t be bothered to get better and newer kitchen equipment.
Cosette and her team made such elaborate meals for their royal family every day with tools that were probably older than the head chef herself and they still got treated this way. It made Sanji want to kick their sorry asses to hell and back and there again.
Kingdom of Science my ass, he thought, clicking his tongue in annoyance.
“Sanji-sama, please! Let us cook for you, royalty shouldn’t have to—with this rusty, old equipment no less—”
“Nope,” Sanji said, raising one hand to silence the panicking cook. “Thanks for the concern but I’m a first-rate chef, not a prince.”
“But—”
“By the way, is the pantry still in the back?” Sanji asked, cutting the protests off before they could really start.
“Yes, sir.” The cook visibly deflated as he answered and Sanji huffed.
He supposed it was too much to ask for them to drop the formalities entirely. Shaking his head, Sanji thanked the man before making his way to the pantry—a route he could still walk blind, even after all these years. He could almost feel young Sanji’s heart racing in excitement from being allowed to walk in and grab ingredients for the first time.
Still innocent, still not realizing he was about to get himself—and the head chef—punished.
Royalty must not cook!
The angry words echoed in his mind despite no one speaking them, forever ingrained deep within him. He never understood the words, never even thought to adhere to them despite the inevitable backlash. Despite the hate and disgust and pain.
Even at six years old, he refused to give this up. And now, at twenty-one… there was no point living if he couldn’t step foot into a kitchen again.
Why was he thinking about this anyway?
Shaking his head, Sanji chased his fath—Vinsmoke Judge’s words away. Instead, he focused his gaze on what was in the pantry, his eyes scanning the contents. He hummed appreciatively at the quality of the food stored inside—even if the kitchenware and appliances were utter shit, at least no expenses were spared on the ingredients.
Not that Sanji would have any trouble working with shit-quality food, but it certainly made his life easier.
Grabbing two bananas, several eggs, some flour and sugar, and a few select spices, Sanji left the pantry again, closing the door behind him with his foot. He almost expected the old head chef to start freaking out, fretting over Sanji balancing too many things at once.
And honestly, he was right. When he was a kid, he’d barely had any idea what he was doing, always overestimating how much he would be able to carry without dropping anything or hurting himself. A smile on his lips, Sanji wished the old man could see him now, handling everything with ease. The last time they saw each other, it came with a complementary trip to the infirmary to get a bad cut treated.
He left everything on the kitchen counter to head for the fridge, mumbling to himself as he listed off the ingredients he still needed. It’d been so long since he made this combination of foods: grilled fish with some fresh bread, scrambled eggs, and banana flambé for dessert. All her favorite foods.
He would have wanted to add a small scoop of vanilla ice cream as well but since that would melt, he decided against it. Maybe he should make some mini apple tarts too while he was at it?
Oh, should he make some fried rice? He didn’t see any mice around but he was sure there were some hungry critters scurrying about. Even though he wasn’t there to make food for them anymore…
“Man, what am I thinking,” Sanji muttered to himself, sighing deeply. There was no way the mice he had befriended all those years ago would still be alive after all these years. Mice simply did not live that long.
But…
Well, what was the harm in cooking a little more than needed?
—————
A bouquet of flowers in one hand, a picnic basket in the other, Sanji made his way towards the far corner of the Germa main ship. It was quiet, hidden from view by trees and bushes—trees that had become much larger, bushes that had been left to grow, unkempt in the years of his absence.
Seeing the state of the garden, Sanji half expected to find his destination completely taken over by vegetation but instead, he was surprised to find the gravestone perfectly clean, only with a tiny, impromptu bundle of flowers in front of it, one made up of the wild plants growing in this small, hidden garden-turned-park.
Probably Reiju, Sanji thought to himself, a small smile tugging on his lips.
“Hi, mom,” he said quietly as he carefully placed his own bouquet next to Reiju’s. “I’m sorry I couldn’t come see you sooner.”
He took a deep breath, willing his voice to stay steady. How pathetic; a grown ass man, getting all choked up at being by the grave of someone who had died over fourteen years ago…
“Zoro would have a fucking field day seeing me like this…” he muttered to himself, rubbing at his eyes. He hated how he suddenly missed the insufferable nicknames and annoying demands for booze.
He would take a fight with the Marimo over one second on Germa’s soil any day. Those were actually fun, if infuriating sometimes.
“You know, mom… I think you’d love the pirate crew I’m a part of. Luffy is so goddamn selfish and can inhale a month’s worth of meat before you can blink but he's always so happy with anything I make. It's fun cooking for him. Zoro is an ass and we fight constantly but he can tell the difference between good and shitty rice and as opposed to Torao, he doesn't throw a fit when I experiment with his rice balls. Nami-san never got to teach me how to make her special tangerine sauce… I could figure it out myself but I’d rather die than intrude like that…
“Usopp likes fish just the way you did and honestly it threw me off at first. Chopper. You'd love Chopper so much. He's like a stuffed animal who feeds on chocolate. We'd all be long dead without him.
"I like making Robin-chan's coffee and sandwiches when she's studying in the evening. She's the smartest person I've ever known; she could destroy Vinsmoke Judge in a second. Except she's not a piece of shit like him.
"Then there's Franky… if I wasn't there to feed him something decent, he would probably just eat junk food. And Brook, my god Brook. Mom, his table manners. His fucking table manners. It doesn't matter how many times I kick his boney ass, he still gets curry everywhere.
"And Jinbe—"
Sanji stopped suddenly, cutting his monologue short. Jinbe was their crewmate but…
"I guess I won't learn anything about him now, will I? I'm stuck here. With these shitty cuffs on my hands…"
He gulped heavily, clenching his shaky fists. He really was a fly caught in a spiderweb, wasn't he? Complete with his movements restricted, death lingering just at the edge of his vision, helpless.
Helpless, powerless… hopeless.
"Shit…” Sanji took a deep breath, closing his eyes momentarily before he dared speak quietly again. “Mom, I don't know what to do…"
But were there really any options left for him? The path was set the moment his wanted poster changed from Dead or Alive to Only Alive. There was no other way forward; no Baratie, no Merry, and no Sunny. No All Blue.
There was nothing but Germa 66, the family he had long since stopped considering a family, and Pudding-chan.
"At least with Pudding-chan, I'll be able to keep cooking. There would be no point living anymore if I couldn't… I want to keep cooking for my crew but Pudding-chan doesn't deserve me making that her problem.”
Sanji paused then, almost as if waiting for his mom to reply. But he knew that was impossible, knew no one would answer. He wasn’t sure he even wanted anyone to answer. Not when he was being so… so lame.
But in the face of his mother’s grave, the grave of the one person he could let himself be vulnerable with when he was a child… it was impossible to keep the facade up. He was tired. Tired of pretending, tired of staying strong, tired of saying he was ‘fine’.
And yet…
“But I’m fine, mom, don’t worry. I didn’t actually explain, did I? Pudding-chan is the girl I’m going to marry. She’s the Emperor Big Mom’s daughter but she’s very cute and very sweet. I might introduce her to you one day…” Or maybe he wouldn’t. He wasn’t so sure he’d even want his real family here—never mind a girl he met once, no matter how nice she was. He supposed time would tell.
As he tried to reach for his cigarettes, Sanji was suddenly reminded of the picnic basket in his hand. He blinked a few times, his gaze dropping to stare blankly at the small woven carrier, wondering how the hell he had managed to forget the most important thing, and he chuckled awkwardly.
“Ah, I hate talking about myself. But—” he paused, fumbling with the basket to pull out the items inside. “I brought you something. You know, I… After I ran away from here, I became a cook. A real, first-rate chef thanks to the shitty old man. My dad—you know, my actual dad—taught me everything I know so my cooking is actually real damn good. So…”
Sanji set the basket carefully on the ground, placing a small black, lacquered box in front of the grave before slowly opening it to reveal the carefully arranged contents of the lunch box—scrambled eggs, grilled fish, bread, and banana flambé.
“Do you remember? I made this for you once. Messed up real bad too. Then I dropped it and it got soaked in the rain, turning it completely inedible,” Sanji said with a genuine laugh. “I still remember Epony’s face when she tasted it.” He was sure he would never forget the face that twisted with disgust and pain from the awful, downright horrible, amount and mix of spices.
Shaking his head, he continued, “I know what I’m doing now though, so I added some bread and vegetables to make it actually feel like a meal,” Sanji pointed out, gesturing to the freshly baked bread that was hopefully still warm, as well as the carrots, radishes, and cucumbers cut and carefully styled into flowers. “Also here—” he added, turning back to the picnic basket to pull out the wine glass and a bottle of the best damn red wine he could find in Yonji’s shittily supplied wine cellar, pouring a perfectly measured glass for her with practiced ease.
A soft smile was still playing on his lips when he spoke his next words. “I know last time I did a terrible job but I—thank you for saying it was delicious back then.”
—————
Reiju wasn't sure how long she was standing behind one of the trees in the overgrown garden that had turned into a park around their mother's grave, waiting for Sanji. She wasn't sure… but she didn't really care. It had been thirteen years since she had helped Sanji escape from this place, thirteen years of Sanji living his own life like he was meant to. She was sure he had a lot to tell their mom, a lot to share about the East Blue, about Straw Hat, and about his friends.
For a while, Reiju wondered whether she should tell him they had come for him… but with Sanji's kindness, he would end up blaming himself for putting them in danger. And Sanji didn't deserve that; not when he was already being put through this foolish marriage plan of their father's.
And so, Reiju didn’t say anything; didn’t say anything when they met, didn’t say anything on their walk here, and she wouldn’t say anything later either.
For now… she would simply let him talk to mom as much as he wanted to and she would be there for him as long as she could throughout this whole mess, looking for a chance to let him escape again, just like she did years ago. After all, the cuffs on his wrist weren’t going to explode and on the off chance that Straw Hat would make it all the way to the very heart of Totto Land, there wouldn’t be any reason for him to stay—as long as Reiju could make sure the hostages in the East Blue were kept safe and as long as Sanji’s kindness didn’t keep him chained to Germa and this family.
Reiju waited for Sanji for a long time, left only with her thoughts and the faint sounds of their soldiers training. There really was nowhere to escape the military aspect in this kingdom, was there?
Shaking her head to make herself focus, Reiju quickly put her usual smile on her lips—the one that showed nothing of her real thoughts, one practiced to perfection over the long years of living with her father and brothers—before she turned to face Sanji once more as he approached her.
“Told her everything you wanted to?” Reiju asked, not commenting on the vulnerable expression on her brother’s face.
“Yeah,” Sanji replied quietly.
His eyes dropped downwards then and briefly, Reiju wondered whether he was hiding from her. But then he reached inside the picnic basket, pulling out a second, smaller lunch box and handed it to her wordlessly.
Reiju blinked. Her gaze fell to the box she was holding, then turned back to Sanji, who only gestured with his chin, prompting her to open it.
With a huff, Reiju carefully lifted the lid, peeking inside curiously… and soon, the corners of her mouth twitched upwards, her smile widening into a rare genuine, happy one. “Apple tarts?” she asked as if she couldn’t see them. “I can’t believe you remembered I like apples.”
“A good chef takes note and remembers their customers’ favorites,” Sanji noted with a shrug as if it were obvious.
And maybe it was, if this were any other family. But with the Vismokes… Reiju was used to no one besides Cosette even remembering she was deathly allergic to peanuts. After all, as long as it didn’t affect her battle performance, what did it matter?
“Thank you,”  Reiju whispered.
“Yeah.” Sanji nodded, then paused, seemingly mulling over his words—or maybe looking for them. “Thank you, too.”
Reiju didn’t reply. She simply picked up one of the little tarts in her lunch box, taking a bite.
She had never tasted an apple so sweet.

Hawks/Keigo Takami x Reader
Content warning: My own take on the Hanahaki Disease. English is not my best language. Foul language. Angst. May not feel like a Reader-insert considering that Reader has a given quirk and other parameters (except appearance) [I'll be updating the list as I go]
Synopsis: In a world where humans have further evolved into having redundant traits, you are simply trying to survive life while assisting the Winged Hero.
Note: This story concept smacked me on the head when I was having a sad girl moment.
0 1...
===============
"Don't forget your meeting with the chairwoman at 2 PM." You remind Hawks as you hand him a stack of papers for him to go through and sign.
"Yeah, yeah. Of course." Your boss grumbles as he goes through a casefile.
In a world where humans have further evolved into gaining superhuman abilities, meta abilities as they have first been coined, comes in a rather redundant trait.
You personally think that quirks are an interesting evolutionary trait. They vary and therefore cannot be pinpointed to selective pressures in nature. It is not akin to peppered moths darkening due to the soot that comes with the Industrial Revolution, quirks were random and have no basis.
So did the abilities of humans coughing up petals after petals when they feel strongly for another person.
You have worked with Hawks three months since he started his hero agency. Fresh out of college and simply through nepotism, maybe a little bit of genetic luck. Your quirk and your family ties were what links you to the Wing Hero.
"I'd appreciate it if you actually read through the reports since, you know, Madame Witch herself would like to know how your last mission went. In full detail." You add in annoyance.
You watched him start as a new hero, a new agency and simply a company you joined through the recommendations by your mother. A mysterious boy that came out of nowhere much like you did if anybody were to take tabs.
"When have I actually not?" Hawks retorts, he looks up to you with such a charmingly playful smile.
"Would you actually like me to list that out for you?" You huff out. It took a while for your relationship with your boss to stabilise.
You joined Hawks' hero agency a few months after the agency itself started. Hawks was anal at first, absolutely all over the place after just firing his fifth assistant in the three-month period his company was set up. He grilled you, put you through so many tasks with mind numbing filings and organising paperwork as his previous assitants simply could not keep up. He was intimidating and a bit pissy, already forecasted for you to fail and to be tossed away but you managed. In fact, you exceeded his expectations, having been able to be a step behind him and sometimes a step before.
When you hit your second month in the company, he actually became a bit nicer and more relaxed. Perhaps it is the fact that you were able to clean up the administrative mess that was caused by the start-up of his business plus the fact that you're coping quite well under the pressure of his ever growing popularity and high demands. And that you memorised his personal likes and dislikes.
And now four years later, your dynamic with your boss is much like you being the nagging mother, constantly reminding him of the mundane tasks of hero work while also picking up after him.
"What does next week look like?" He asks, still reading through whatever casefile the Hero Public Safety Commission handed him some time ago.
"No meetings but your new sidekicks are joining in so you're---"
"Training them, yeah, got it." He sighs, snapping the folder shut and shoots you a tired smile.
It is admirable how Hawks can withstand the pressure of being the number 3 hero despite his young age. He breaks records of being the youngest and fastest while looking so cool and effortless that spectators are under the assumption that he is an under challenged prodigy.
But he is not. He is simply human running on constant adrenaline and stress.
"I'll go grab you some coffee. You might wanna look alive for when the chairwoman shows up." You offer, turning your heels and making your way out of his office.
"Have I mentioned that you're such an angel?" He calls out and you can hear the grin in his voice.
"Many times." You retort like clockwork.
He always tries to make himself look like he has got his shit together despite his age. And honestly? That's definitely why a lot of the people in this country cough up sunflowers when they think of him.

The Dork Who Fell To Earth
Ship: Peter Quill x Gabriel Layson, familial Dale & Gabriel
Word Count: 1545
Summary: Another one-off AU, this time involving a crossover between my romantic ship with Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Marvel) and my familial ship with Dale & Allison (Tucker & Dale vs Evil). At least, I planned for this to just be one fic, but it might become a series if I get more ideas. Anyway, Peter Quill has been marooned on Earth and Gabriel gets to play nurse. CWs for food mentions, injury mentions.

Gabriel was sitting on the porch, drinking a Pepsi and doodling in his sketchbook when Dale pulled up in his truck. He immediately hopped up, excited to greet his father figure, only to become concerned by the expression on Dale’s face as he approached.
“Hi, Dale! What’s wrong?”
“Hi, Gabriel, how’re you?” Dale squeezed his arm affectionately, still with a less-than-happy look on his face. He gestured back toward his truck. “I-I saw this guy kind of stumblin’ around in a field and y’know, I just wanted to see if he was okay, so I pulled over and I went over to him. He’s all scuffed up and his head was bleedin’ something fearsome, I didn’t- I didn’t want to leave him there so…”
Looking closer at the passenger seat of the truck, Gabriel now noticed a man sitting there with his eyes closed and a pained expression on his face.
“Oh damn, that’s scary. You want me to help bring him inside? We can put him in my room for now.”
Dale nodded and Gabriel went over to open the door. Up close, Gabriel couldn’t help but think he was kind of cute, even with all the scratches he suffered from. Curly brown hair, a moustache, slightly chubby and wearing a dark red leather jacket. Supporting the stranger on either side, Dale and Gabriel brought his half-conscious self into the house, settling him into Gabriel’s bed.
“Should I call Allison??” Dale asked as Gabriel returned from the bathroom, a roll of gauze in hand.
“I think you should wait until her lunch break, but yeah, she should probably know before she gets home…” They sat on the edge of the bed and began wrapping up the man’s head, stopping the flow of blood from his hairline. “Where do you think he’s come from?”
“I mean, from the looks of his clothes I’d say he’s from the city, at least.”
Gabriel shifted the man and took off his jacket before finally letting him rest his head against their pillows, pulling the duvet up over him. “I suppose we let him sleep for now. We can ask him questions later.”
Dale nodded, wringing his hands. “Y’know, I’ve still got stuff to do… do-do you think you can handle looking after him while I’m gone? I hate to leave you here with a stranger, but… errands.”
“I mean, yeah, that’s fine.” Gabriel shrugged as they exited his room. “Not like he’s going to be able to do much if he’s a criminal, he’s completely out of commission. Besides, you and Allison have done plenty well teaching me self-defence.” He grinned and playfully bumped against him.
“We sure did, heh. I can’t never- can never?? Can never tell you enough how proud I am of you. You know that, right?”
“Yes, and it’s frankly embarrassing!”
The two hugged before Dale left and Gabriel was alone in the house again, though not really this time considering the stranger in their bed. Having nothing better to do, they brought their drink and sketchbook inside and began preparing for when the man would awaken. He gathered pain medication, ice packs, and heat packs, then set out the ingredients to make grilled cheese sandwiches. By the time he was done cooking, the man still hadn’t awoke, so he brought his own sandwich and a magazine into the room to wait, settling into a beanbag chair in the corner.
He was about done when the man in his bed began to shift. Gabriel set aside the magazine and hopped up, padding to the bedside. “Welcome to the land of the living. Looks like you took quite a tumble.”
The man grunted, lifting his head slightly and reaching up to gingerly touch the bandages. He opened his eyes, squinting, and Gabriel was startled to find they were the most brilliant aquamarine colour he had ever seen. “Where… am I??”
“Mare Grove, West Virginia, Dale and Allison Layson’s house,” he then gestured to himself with the last bite of his sandwich, “Gabriel’s room.”
The man blinked. “Earth??”
Gabriel stifled a chuckle. “No shit. I made grilled cheeses.” He finished his own and dusted off his hands. “You should probably eat, take some Aspirin. You don’t happen to remember your name, do you?”
“Peter…” He settled back against the mattress, staring at the ceiling. “Peter Quill.”
“Good. Nice to meet you, Quill.”
As soon as Gabriel had left the room, Peter once again sat up as much as he could stand and looked around. Earth. There was no possible way he was back on Earth, his Earth. But this sure did look like an Earthling’s bedroom, and the air smelled of Earth grilled cheese… he quickly laid back down when Gabriel returned with a food tray. They set it on the bedside table and helped Peter sit up, fluffing up some pillows to support his back before setting the tray on his lap. It presented two halves of a grilled cheese sandwich, a small bowl of tomato soup, a glass of water, and two Aspirin tablets.
“I’m Gabriel, by the way.”
“Thanks, Gabriel…” He picked up one of the sandwich halves, examining it before hesitantly taking a bite. His stomach growled loudly as he chewed, and abandoning any idea that this was some sort of trick, he eagerly gobbled down the food and took the medication. “How did I get here??”
“Dale said he found you wandering aimlessly in a field somewhere and that you were spouting nonsense.”
Peter nodded slowly before feeling his arms and realizing his lack of coat. “Where’s my jacket?!”
“In the hall closet, don’t worry, I didn’t steal it,” Gabriel soothed before leaving to retrieve it. “It is a nice jacket, though.” He set the jacket at the foot of the bed. “So, do you remember anything?”
“Okay, well, this is going to sound insane, but I was up there,” Peter pointed toward the ceiling, “y’know, space. Next thing I know, I’m in your bed and fuck am I sore. And not in a good way, in an I-fell-down-the-stairs-when-I-was-drunk way.”
“Are you sure you weren’t dreaming and-or under the influence of drugs?”
“I’m absolutely sure! Here, I’ll show you!” He frantically pressed behind his right ear to activate his helmet, only to be slightly shocked. “Ouch, mother-- what the Hell???” He pressed it again, but nothing happened. He buried his head in his hands. “Oh God. My helm’s broken. That’s just great.”
“What am I supposed to be seeing here?”
“Alright, forget that, I didn’t happen to have some really cool, sci-fi-looking blasters on me when this Dale guy picked me up, did I?”
Gabriel shook his head. “None that I saw, unless they got left in his truck.”
“Is that truck still here?”
“Hate to put a damper on that hopeful tone, Quill, but Dale probably won’t be back for at least another two hours.” They glanced at their alarm clock, “which reminds me, I should probably call Allison and ask her what to do.”
“Wait, I’m going to prove to you that I came from space!” Groaning, he stiffly kicked off the blankets and swung his legs over the side of the bed, indicating his dusty boots. “Rocket thrusters!”
Gabriel knelt down and examined the metal jutting off the side of the boots. “Do they work?”
“Hell yeah they work! Though it’s probably a bad idea to use them inside…”
“And especially when you’re injured. Well, alright, fine, I’ll entertain the idea of you being a spaceman.” They stood. “What’s it like, up there?”
“Too vast to get into right now… you know, it’s been a long time since I was on Earth…”
“So you’re not an alien.”
“No, I’m not an alien! I’m originally from Earth, it’s… it’s a long story, okay? I got abducted as a kid, in the 80s…”
“Ah. Are you sure you’re not just traumatized, Quill, and using the idea of being a space traveller to cope?”
He buried his face in his hands and made a sound of prolonged frustration before attempting to stand. “I don’t have time to deal with this, I’ve gotta get back up there…”
“You have plenty of time to heal,” Gabriel forced him back into a sitting position. “Now don’t go anywhere while I call my mom about it, alright?”
As Gabriel left, Peter reluctantly laid back down, folding his arms crankily. He was torn. On the one hand, he’d like to go back to being Star-Lord, devilishly handsome outlaw, but on the other… this was his home planet. There was so much to catch up on. Maybe there was someone out there who still remembered him. And damn it if his stubborn streak wasn’t set ablaze by Gabriel. Sure, he didn’t know anything about them, but he was becoming increasingly determined to get them to believe him… And of course they and their family were kind enough to give him a bed, food, and most importantly, something to soothe the aches in his worn-out body… He sighed. At the very least, he would stay here until he felt better. Then he would get to the bottom of what had happened to him and how he had been discarded back on the blue marble he initially called home.

How I write Ægir's name 🌊
Requested by @agentduckorico
ᚬ, deconstructed ᚷ or ᛃ (depending on how you pronounce it), ᛁ, and ᚱ with a big, pronounced bowl/curve to make his cauldron. It also makes an ᚦ, because he's a giant. I have a lot of thoughts about the Sea's hospitality.
Someone said it looks like a grill...which still fits the hospitality theme.
If you use, please tag me...I wanna see~
Buy me a coffee

Draw this bindrune with me.
This is the last one I had in my request list. Whose name should I do next?

Lucius Fisher (1843-1916). He was a Chicago, Illinois paper company magnate and architect. In 1895, he commissioned Daniel Burnham and Company to build the 20 story, 275 foot tall Fisher Building in the Chicago Loop.

Fisher Building, Chicago, taken April 29, 1896. From The Inland Architect and News Record, May 1896. [Link to full article PDF here]
The writer of the 1896 article described the building thus:
But here, for what we believe to be the first time in human experience, one of the highest commercial buildings in the world has been erected almost without any bricks. It fronts on three streets, and on the remaining side adjoins other property. The fronts are covered with cellular terra cotta on the outside, not in imitation of a wall, but following upward the steel supporting members, and closing in the transoms between the windows, leaving two-thirds of the exterior to be enclosed by glass… Only two bricklayers were employed at any time in this part of the work.

The Fisher Building, 343 South Dearborn Street in the Chicago Loop, was commissioned by paper magnate Lucius Fisher. The original 18-story building was completed in 1896 by D.H. Burnham & Company; the architect was Charles B. Atwood, who died before the building's completion. An addition was later added in 1907.
Some facts about the building, from the Emporis site:
The original wing was only the second building in Chicago to reach 18 stories (after the Masonic Temple), and is the oldest still standing at that height.
Because of the building's great height for its time, the usual spread foundations were supplemented with piles underneath them to support the added weight.
The second floor was originally a banking room, and has especially large windows compared to the floors above it.
To enhance the facade's vertical emphasis, most of the ornamentation is placed on its horizontal members, reducing the banding effect that would occur if they were blank.
The Gothic ornament is in the 15th century style of Bruges and Rouen.
Declaring the structure a Chicago Landmark in 1978, the Landmarks Division noted:
Cladding this early skyscraper with Gothic-inspired, terra-cotta tracery was not a casual stylistic choice. Its designers looked for inspiration to the early Gothic cathedrals of Europe, which shared common characteristics of tallness and often having more glass than masonry. Cut glass door panel Eagles and mythical beasts decorate the upper stories, and aquatic creatures and seashells--a visual pun on the name of the building's original owner, Lucius G. Fisher--are found at the base. A later addition to the north is largely a repetition of the original design, except for the absence of bay windows.

Architectural Description from the 1965 Historic American Buildings Survey Report [Link to PDF of report here]
PART 11 ARCHITECTURAL INFORMATION A. General Statement: I. Architectural character: The Fisher Building is a large office 'building designed by the firm of D. H. Burnham Co. in 1895. It has been cited by the Chicago Landmarks Commission and it is indicative of the level of achievement in skyscraper design attained by the architects of the Chicago School. The steel cage structure is sheathed in a curtain wall of decorative terra cotta and glass, providing ample space and light for the occupants and making it possible for the building to be erected relatively quickly and economically. B. Description of Exterior: 1. Over-all dimensions: Rectangular 70'-6" (five-bay south front) x 150' 0" (eleven-bay west front), including addition. Eighteen stories. 2. Wall construction, finish and color: The original block of the building had tripartite projecting bays alternating with planed surfaces. Bays end at sill of 17th story. Arches of varying width span the window openings of the 17th floor. The original salmon terra cotta finish is now coated with a black patina from the soot and dirt of the city. 3. Openings: a. Doorways and doors: The arched entrance on VanBuren Street, originally the principal entrance, is intact; that at 343 South Dearborn Street has received a 20th century I 'modernization"--a polished granite portal with plate glass and aluminum doors. The original doors from the vestibule inside are decorated with an ornamental fish cut in the glass panels. b.. Windows: Mostly one-over-one light, double-hung windows; those of the original building are grouped three to a bay window, two between; in the north addition, the windows are placed in a plane in groups of three. At the 17th floor the lights are gathered under wide arches; at the 18th they are again in threes with transoms above. The first floor display windows have been disfigured by a variety of signs, aluminum panels, and other attempts at commercial modernization. ...General setting and orientation: The buiIding occupies the southern portion of a narrow block at the south end of the Loop. Its neighbors are the Old Colony Building (HABS No. ILL-1053) to the south and the Monadnock BuiIding (HABS NO. ILL-1027) to the west. The buiIding fronts the sidewalk line on three sides and is adjacent to the elevated on VanBuren Street. Prepared by Larry J. Homolka, Historian and Assistant Supervisor National Park Service August, 1965.

Chapter 2: Jumble
Summary: Matsu and Okinu bond over feeling like a burden.
Read it on AO3 - or read it here:
Matsu was squatting in front of his house, grilling some fish when he saw someone approach from the corner of his eye. Looking up, he saw it was Okinu, beaming down at him.
"Hey, Kinu," he greeted her, quickly looking away.
She crouched down next to him, wrapping her arms around her knees.
"Hiya, Matsu-san," her voice was beaming too, "What've you been up to?"
"Trying to get back in business, y'know," he said, poking the sizzling fish. It didn't need poking, but his hands demanded something to do, and his eyes something to look at, other than Okinu. "Bought materials, advertised my services."
"You'll be drowning in commissions again in no-time, I'm sure!" Matsu involuntarily glanced at her and, catching his eye, Okinu winked. Matsu looked back at the grill and attempted to flip the fish. It was a bit stuck.
"Dad's worried about you."
Oh, here it comes...
"Wishes you'd drop by for a drink at least, to show you're alive," she joked. It wasn't really a joke, though, Matsu knew.
It had already been a few days since Ume had reluctantly allowed Matsu to go his own way. Okinu walked with him, as she had trouble describing where exactly his new place was, with them both being so new to town. Ume tagged along, so that he would know where it was too.
Matsu hadn't gone back to see them since. He was genuinely busy preparing - he was sure that either of the two had come to see him before, and he'd just been gone at the time - but that was only one part of it. There was something inside him holding him back, as well, and he couldn't begin to explain why. Even to himself.
He'd wanted to drop in for breakfast the very next morning, and when he didn't do that he thought of stopping by for an afternoon snack - or maybe they'd have him for dinner. Every time he thought of visiting his head had a whole slew of counter arguments ready for him.
It wasn't a neat list, more a jumble of half-finished thoughts, that all sounded very legitimate and important, talking over and interrupting each other. Every now and again a sharp dig at himself would cut through, clear and well articulated, emphasizing each of the very sensible reasons for not going. Yet.
This muddle in his head wasn't anything new to him, so he focused on his work. That's where he felt competent: he was good at his craft and he was good at selling it. People respected him as a craftsman. After two days of talking himself out of visiting Ume and Okinu, he had decided that the right time to do so would be after getting his first commission. They could have a drink together, to celebrate.
He got his first commission today and he was, very obviously, not having a drink with Ume.
The jumble resurfaced.
"I can take care of myself," he meant it to sound reassuring. It came out more gruff than anything else. He half turned to Okinu, looking at the grains of dirt on her white socks, rather than at her, and added in a softer tone: "I promise."
"Matsu-san..."
Like her dad Okinu wasn't exactly shy about letting people know she didn't agree with things. She and her dad were entirely on opposite sides of the criticism spectrum, yet equally easy to shrug off. Where Ume would complain loudly, she would smile fondly and call people silly.
This was different.
"I'm a bit worried about you too," she sounded almost mournful and it felt like a punch in Matsu's gut. He didn't say anything and for a moment, neither did she.
"I didn't tell dad," when she spoke again there was a bit of mischief in her voice, "because knowing I'm on his side would convince him that he's right, and when he's absolutely sure of himself, he's unbearable."
"Even more so?"
"hehe, yes."
Matsu smiled, in spite of himself, then he sighed. Let's have this conversation. Why not.
"But you agree with him then. Why?"
"Because you seem to have such a hard time accepting help," Okinu said, "I was kind of hoping you'd gotten over feeling like a burden, seeing as you stayed with us until dad was satisfied, but then you just disappeared without a trace again."
Okinu, still hugging her legs, rested her head on her knees and looked at Matsu. He didn't look back. It didn't seem like she expected him to anyway. He wondered how Okinu knew that he felt like a burden. His instinct was to blame Masa: Matsu had told him about some of his insecurities in confidence and it was just like him to accidentally blab it to the others. Or maybe I'm just really obvious after all. How pathetic.
"None of us doubt that you can do everything on your own, Matsu-san," Okinu continued, "but wouldn't it be just a bit faster or easier or simply less lonely if you stop insisting on doing everything by yourself?"
"It's not that simple," Matsu said, a little irritated. Easy for her to say. "You've had your dad supporting you all your life and mine left me to fix everything myself."
From the corner of his eye Matsu saw Okinu lift her head from her knees, and looked over at her, feeling a bit defiant. He'd never shared anything about his youth before and he expected her to look surprised at this insight. Instead he saw that she looked annoyed herself - an expression she'd never worn in his presence before. He was so taken aback that he didn't look away when she met his glance with what could almost be described as a glare.
"I understand you much better than you think, Matsu-san," Okinu said, "even if it comes from a different place."
"What do you mean?"
"You must know that my parents were quite young when I was born, and then my mum died when I was four."
"I do," Matsu said.
"So my dad was basically a still kid and without family and inexperienced and grieving. And I was sick a lot. We managed together, but it was so, so hard. I've been awfully angry at myself for making my dad's life harder than it already was. Whenever I got ill he would close the izakaya to care for me and miss out on money that could've been crucial to our survival."
"Ume probably felt the same way about you," Matsu interrupted, "that he made your life harder than it already was."
"Probably," Okinu agreed, "but I never saw it that way."
"I get the feeling he didn't either."
"Likely, but still," she resumed pointedly, "If anyone knows what it is to feel like a burden, it's me, Matsu-san. In your case it was an unkind parent, and in mine it was my own body."
She squeezed herself a little tighter as she said this.
"Dad always says I practically raised myself, and while I think he gives himself way too little credit, I really did have to do a large part of it myself. And that's not his fault - he did what he could and I love him for it."
Matsu's chest still squeezed tight whenever Ume's dedicated parenting was brought up and he still couldn't help thinking of his own kid, whom he never met, now farther out of reach than ever. The tightness and the thought weren't painful like they used to be - simply a knee-jerk reaction of his mind - and both had passed before Okinu's next words.
"So at one point," she said, "I decided I was grown up enough to fix everything myself as well. I got good at hiding when I was sick and tired, just to be able to help out at the izakaya. I served drinks, I did the shopping, I entertained customers - just to pay my dad back for what he did for me."
Okinu fidgeted with the hem of her kimono and put her chin on her knees.
"I guess that didn't go so well," Matsu said. Okinu glanced over at him and grinned guiltily.
"It didn't," the grin faded, "I got so terribly ill at some point, that it took me a month or so to recover, instead of a few days. When dad found out what I did, he lectured me good, hahah.. From then on we worked really hard on me being ok with things as they were, and I've actually gotten quite a lot stronger in the last three years!"
She smiled at Matsu, and started happily rocking side to side a little, with her head still on her knees. The story was over. He got what she was saying: "share your troubles and things will feel less heavy," or something like that.
"Well, I don't have-" he started.
"a crappy immune system like me?" the interruption was casual, like she predicted what he was going to say. While it wasn't exactly what het been on his mind, she did get the gist. Her smiling and rocking didn't stop.
"Matsu-san, everyone feels bad sometimes. You don't have to be on death's door to ask for help. Or for a good time with friends."
Matsu looked at the fish on the grill next to him, forgotten during Okinu's story. It was still edible by the looks of it. He grabbed his chopsticks and moved the fish to the bowl of rice that he'd prepared before coming outside.
"That smells good," Okinu said, "I bet it's tasty. I feel like it's missing something, though."
"What?" Matsu asked. He knew the quality of his cooking wasn't anything close to that of Ume, but it sufficed.
"Good sake!" Okinu said, cheekily.
Ohhyes.. That would be nice. Any sake Matsu had consumed since leaving Edo had been a bit disappointing, including the sake Ume had served him during his recovery there. No one was more frustrated about that than Ume himself.
"Did Ume find some then?" Matsu said, sarcastically. He took the whole fish between his chopsticks and took a bite. It was nice and salty and the skin crunched satisfyingly between his teeth. He had remembered it just in time.
As he went in for his second bite, he realised Okinu had not yet answered his question. When he looked over at her to see if she was distracted by him, she looked straight at him and her eyes were sparkling with enthusiasm. He couldn't believe it.
"He did?"
"He did!"
"Damn, Kinu," Matsu grumbled and started shovelling food in his mouth so fast that Okinu finally stopped rocking and stared, mesmerized, "why didn't you lead with that?"
-
Matsu had been living in his new residence nearly a week when the lone woman two doors down passed away. He felt like a massive opportunist when he prepared to approach to the mourning family that gathered there, basically to ask if he could have the now vacant row house, before anyone else could get to it. Then again, his friends were bound to arrive any day now, and they needed somewhere to stay.
He intended to use a bit more grace and tact than that, of course. He found his late neighbour's eldest child, a woman in her early thirties, and expressed his condolences with the appropriate solemnity. He praised the kindness of the woman's mother, and stated his sadness at not being able to get to know her better.
Matsu could be very charming if he wanted, and in no time at all he had the woman, and her younger siblings who later joined the conversation, wrapped around his finger. They sympathised with Matsu looking out for his dear friends, and finding a new home for them. Of course they could have the place.
Okinu moved in to keep the place reserved, and lo and behold, the very next day Otake and Ginta came knocking at Matsu's door, escorted by Ume. It was quite late in the evening and the two looked very tired.
"We were so close," Ginta explained after they dropped their things off at the row house that was now theirs, "and we didn't really wanna look for somewhere to sleep again, just to walk for two more hours and get where we wanted to be."
"It's been a long time since I've felt so drained of energy," Otake groaned and started rubbing her feet, in a way that was a bit less elegant and dignified than everyone was used of her. Matsu quickly sat down next to her.
"Here," he reached out his hands to her, "let me."
Otake readily put her feet on Matsu's lap. Judging by the low grunt coming from the doorway, Ume was very likely staring at the scene with disapproval and jealousy. Matsu didn't look to check, but was amused by it.
"If only you took such good care of yourself, Matsu," Otake sighed with contentment as soon Matsu started to massage her. Now he did look at Ume, annoyed himself. Ume did not attempt to hide the malicious joy he obviously felt.
"What?" he said, "had to explain why you got here before them, despite leaving last."
"I'm working on it," Matsu told Otake.
Okinu walked up to her dad and took him by the arm.
"It's late, daddy," she said, "let's go home and make sure we get up early, so we have a nice breakfast ready for everyone tomorrow morning."

March 14 (UPI) -- Britain may follow the United States, European Union and Canada in banning TikTok from government phones, according to the country's security minister who is looking at possible security risks posed by the Chinese-owned app.
Minister of State for Security Tom Tugendhat said Tuesday that he had asked the National Cyber Security Center to look into TikTok saying it was "absolutely essential" to keep Britain's "diplomatic processes free and safe".
"We need to make sure our phones are not spyware. Understanding exactly what the challenges that these apps pose, what they are asking for and how they're reaching into our lives is incredibly important," he said.
"What certainly clear is that, for many young people, TikTok is now a news source. And just as is quite right that we know who owns the news sources in the U.K. ... it's important that we know who owns news sources that are feeding into our phones."
RELATEDCanadian government bans TikTok from all devices
Tugendhat, an army veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, did not rule out banning it on government phones, but said he wanted to wait for the conclusions of the NCSC.
Parliament has already closed its own TikTok account after MPs raised concerns about security last year.
Tuesday's announcement came one day after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Britain would look at the bans the United States, EU and Canada had implemented for government phones.
RELATEDWhite House gives agencies 30 days to purge TikTok from gov't devices
TikTok is facing intense scrutiny from Western governments over security and data privacy worries amid fears the app could be used to collect and pass on user data to Beijing or promote a pro-China agenda.
The company denies allegations that it transfers data to the Chinese government and insists it operates no differently than other social media platforms.
The EU Commission and more than half of U.S. states have already introduced a ban over concerns around potential cyber-attacks.
RELATEDCongress to grill TikTok on list of concerns from spying to child safety
In a Feb. 27 memo, the White House's Office of Management and Budget gave federal agencies 30 days to delete TikTok from staff and contractors' work devices.
The U.S. Senate passed legislation in December banning TikTok from government-issued devices. The No TikTok on Government Devices Act by Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., was passed by unanimous consent, sending it on to the House for approval.
President Joe Biden signed it into law Dec. 29 as part of the federal government's fiscal 2023 spending bill.
Last month, the European Commission ordered its 32,000 staff to remove the TikTok app from devices as soon as possible and no later than March 15.
A 2020 attempt by President Donald Trump to introduce an outright ban was later blocked in the courts.

The Rise and Fall of Empires
After an uneventful day of transit, we landed quite late in Turkiye and were rushed quickly to dinner before we pulled in at the hotel that we would be staying at in Istanbul: the Pullman. On the two hour flight from Cairo to Istanbul (for most of the day, we simply sat around the hotel before hopping onto the coach that would deliver us to the airport at 10AM), I managed to watch Bullet Train and tick off the chaotic but fun movie from my long list of films that had looked interesting but I hadn’t bothered to go into the cinemas to actually well...watch.
In any case, by the time I had showered and fallen asleep on the soft bed at the Pullman, it was quite late and we had an early start the next day.
Tumblr media
At about 6:35AM, I was rudely awoken by a morning wake-up call and served as a reminder that I was late! Popo and I came down for a hurried breakfast before boarding the coach that would take us around the ancient city of Istanbul, or Constantinople as it was previously known during the Byzantine and Ottoman eras.
We arrived at our first stop for the day: a decently sized marine vessel, just before 9AM. Hopping on, we enjoyed a cruise around the Bosphorus Strait, providing us with excellent views of the city of Istanbul. It should be known that the city straddles the bridge between Europe and Asia and has proven to be a pivotal beacon throughout most of history. It played a key role in Christianity before it fell to the Ottomans and became an Islamic stronghold.
As such, the history of Constantinople is really a history of the world, as well as a symbol of the West’s relationship with the East.
But back to a recount of my trip there!
It was unfortunate that we had arrived in the city in March. The weather was still quite cool and after a good thirty minutes, I felt quite frozen to my spot on the upper deck and quickly sought shelter from the fierce wind.
After our trip on the high seas, our ship pulled into port near the Dolmabahce Palace. In Chinese, the palace is often called the “New Palace” as it was built in and around the mid 1800s and was in use for approximately 70 years until the 1920s when Turkiye became independent.
The style of the Dolmabahce Palace, although commissioned by an Ottoman Sultan, was very European in design. However, this was soon explained by the fact that the architect for the palace had studied in France and had helped build similar types of buildings all across Europe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Still, the decorations inside the palace was a lot different to the ones I’d seen before in France and Austria. A shame, really, that photos were not allowed as I could show you rather than be forced to describe what I saw. Even though there were a few other tourists that took quite a few ‘subtle’ photographs of the rooms and the grand ceremonial hall.
Most notable, at least to me, were the paintings that lined the walls. Most of them depicted famous battles the Turks partook in. Another interesting piece of interior design that caught my eye was the crystal staircase, with the crystal primarily being the supporting columns of the banister.
Down in the old storage cellars, too, the palace sported numerous displays full of utensils compromised of Bohemian and Baccarat crystals. They also had Mosser glass, which the internet tells me can cost thousands of dollars because of their high-quality construction. Another location in the heart of the palace had displays for medals, weapons and Hokka sets.
But it should be noted that the palace also had similar trappings as its European counterparts such as the gilded halls, lavish drapings, huge mirrors, as well as beautiful chandeliers. Which will serve as useful material for my future writings although I lack photos for reference.
After touring the Dolmabahce Palace, we had a quick lunch in a spot that was, no doubt, frequented for its water views and which served as a popular fishing spot.
With our stomachs full of grilled fish, we headed to the Grand Bazaar, established all the way back in 1481 according to the plaque out front. There, we roamed the shops and I exchanged some Australian and American dollars into Turkish lira. And though there was a leather jacket I dearly wanted to purchase, my funds, unfortunately, did not have enough stretch to allow me to buy it out right. Nor did I want to risk using my debit card for fear that the details would be stolen and used for nefarious purposes.
Good riddance, I say! I didn’t want it anyways...
Maybe...
Gosh, I do wish I had bought that reversible leather jacket!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once I had established how useless I was at haggling, we headed to the Blue Mosque, which sat opposite the Hagia Sophia. Due to ill luck, visiting on a Friday of all days, the Blue Mosque was closed by the time we arrived. It was also undergoing renovations. This fact angered one member of the tour group who was quite rude and aggressive to our tour guide for fear that we would miss out on all the key locations on the itinerary.
What he didn’t know, of course, was that the itinerary had already been rejigged when we had paid a visit to the Dolmabahce Palace earlier and we would have plenty of time upon our return to Istanbul to take a gander around a mosque if we so wished (which did happen, although it wasn’t the Blue Mosque!).
Undaunted by the trantrum thrown, the tour guide continued to tell us about the Roman Hippodrome that had been constructed in the heart of Istanbul and why the only signs of its presence was the obelisk that had been taken from Karnak Temple. Of course, we had already seen its twin when we visited Karnak Temple several days ago when we had given Egypt a whirl. Score one for a well-planned trip!
We then headed to the Hagia Sophia, which was initially built as a Church following the conversion of the Roman Empire to Christianity. The Hagia Sophia was later converted into a mosque when the Turks took the city. When Turkiye became independent, it served temporarily as a museum before being converted back into a mosque.
And to think that such a sight had been built in a mere 5 years!
True, a lot of the material, such as the Grecian columns used to support the roof, had been recycled from older buildings like a Temple to Artemis in the Ephesus region, but it still looked and felt like a marvel of engineering and vision.
The day ended with dinner at a doner kebab place before we headed back to our hotel for another long day ahead. Although, this time, we would mostly be on the road.

Teachers and Police Face Service Suspension in Medical Scheme Crisis
Tumblr media
Teachers and Police Face Service Suspension in Medical Scheme Crisis The hospitals contracted under the multibillion-shilling government-funded medical insurance scheme for teachers, police officers, and prison officers have threatened to suspend services due to unpaid capitation claims amounting to Sh5 billion. As a result, policyholders within the scheme will cover their medical expenses out of their own pockets. Despite this, the government released Sh17.6 billion to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in the current fiscal year to cover medical insurance for teachers in public schools and Sh13.6 billion to the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) to cover police and prison officers. ALSO READ: Parliament Grills Minet Kenya's Sh53 Billion Teachers' Medical Scheme The policy for police and prison employees comprises Sh5 billion for Work Injury Benefits Act (Wiba), Group Personal Accident (GPA), final expense, and group life insurance, as well as Sh8.6 billion for medical coverage. The latest disclosures come as the Senate and the National Assembly probe the subject, specifically the legal position of Medical Administrators Kenya Limited (MAKL), which has delayed the processing of capitation claims, causing hospitals to become enraged. Nominated Senator Raphael Chimera, who sought the House statements on the tardy handling of medical claims for teachers, police officers, and prison officers, seeks the Senate Health Committee to summon Minet Kenya, a consortium of insurance companies led by CIC General Insurance Limited and MAKL. Senator Chimera reported that they have summoned the involved parties to come and explain the matter. Furthermore, Senator Chimera mandates MAKL to specify the count of individual beneficiaries and the panels of medical and healthcare service providers. ALSO READ: TSC AON Minet Insurance Health Facilities in Kitui County Senator Chimera, casting doubt on the legitimacy of capitation in Kenya, declared that the committee might compel Auditor-General Nancy Gathungu to conduct a forensic audit of the administration of the teachers, police, and jail systems. The purpose of this specific audit is to mandate insurance companies to provide a comprehensive report, including a list of hospitals, the outstanding amounts, details of services rendered, and clarification on the whereabouts of the funds. The senator stressed the importance of verifying whether the hospitals have genuinely not been paid and called for transparency in accounting for the allocated funds. Nairobi West Hospital is one of the health establishments that has written to MAKL demanding payment for services provided, owing Sh576.79 million in outstanding medical claims. The medical service provider was reported to persistently accumulate the mentioned amounts as it extended services to members. Consequently, the company has surpassed its credit limit of Sh200 million. The letter dated November 14, 2023, was reportedly copied to the Inspector General of Police Service and Commissioner-General of Kenya Prisons Service (KPS). ALSO READ: TSC AON Minet Insurance Health Facilities in Kisumu County  The communication highlights that the failure to meet contractual payment obligations has resulted in operational constraints for the hospital. This includes challenges such as the inability to remunerate doctors, service providers, and suppliers, thus adversely affecting the procurement of essential medical supplies and consumables. In fulfillment of its contractual obligations to MAKL, the hospital is threatening to cease medical services until it receives outstanding payment. Such an action could have catastrophic consequences for policyholders. The letter specifies that the medical service provider will formally communicate any planned suspension of services in writing seven calendar days prior to the intended suspension taking effect. Ms Rosemary Kuraru, on behalf of Inspector-General of Police Japheth Koome, wrote to the CEO of CIC General Insurance Limited on November 21, 2023, regarding the Nairobi West Hospital's demand for payment of pending claims. ALSO READ: TSC AON Minet Insurance Health Facilities in Kisii County The teachers' medical service system, which has now been the subject of several complaints about poor service, has been in operation for nine years. The National Assembly and Senate express concern, asserting that MAKL is a private company. They highlight that the procurement of insurance for TSC is camouflaged as an insurance plan. Minet Kenya is the scheme tendering entity for TSC, and a consortium of insurance companies led by CIC General Insurance Limited is the scheme tendering entity for police. Procuring organizations (TSC and NPSC) directly pay the government-mandated premiums to Minet Kenya and CIC General Insurance Limited. Subsequently, the insurance companies distribute the funds to MAKL for capitation purposes. Following this, MAKL appoints hospitals and doctors, establishing them as a network to provide services within the system. ALSO READ: TSC AON Minet Insurance Health Facilities in Kirinyaga County The suffering of the scheme's insured begins when MAKL, which retains all admission rights, negotiates with hospitals to deliver care at very cheap capitation rates for patients in order to maximize revenues. The hospitals must also make a profit from MAKL's modest capitation payments. Hospitals contracted by MAKL ultimately maximize revenues by employing tactics such as blatant denial of treatments or subjecting patients to countless hassles, including prolonged waiting times, leading them to abandon the process and opt for out-of-pocket financing elsewhere. Recently, the Education Committee of the National Assembly received information indicating that critical surgeries requiring prompt medical attention may face delays of several days. This situation forces individuals to either explore alternative financing options or confront the grim possibility of succumbing while awaiting treatment. The more patients a hospital treats under MAKL, the more money it makes from capitation fees. How we test grills Consultants Finances-pleasant for a gasoline pizza oven Straightforward to assemble Straightforward to operate Made constantly loyal pizza Cons Much less swish deem The hole between the stone and the oven Moderately diminutive opening for loading pies Heads up for those whose indulge in language is pizza: a pizza oven for home consume is now now not something to gift evenly. Despite the truth that you just happen to've got the closing pizza lover in suggestions, the operation and, frankly, expense of the massive majority of pizza ovens on the market necessitate that an intended recipient is wrathful by having one. It is now now not an informal appliance to abet on standby for a as soon as-yearly pizza birthday celebration. Right here is how the $280 Pronto pizza oven oven performed in our test. PizzacraftCNET's listing of Most effective Pizza Ovens for 2023 breaks down the pause devices for you, but even the pricetag range opt is in the $350 differ. So it begs the inquire: Are there any noteworthy pizza oven devices available in the market for decrease than $300? Critically if you happen to is inclined to be now now not obvious how noteworthy consume a pizza oven will web. I tried Pizzacraft's Pizzeria Pronto, a more price effective model with solid user reviews on Amazon to deem if saving a few dollars on a pizza oven can unexcited prove an excellent pie.Pizzacraft Pizzeria Pronto at a seeType: outdoors, portable gasoline-powered pizza oven with built-in pizza stoneDimensions: 15"D x 18"W x 18"HWeight: 26 lbs.Label: $280 Pizzacraft Pizzeria Pronto setupThe Pizzacraft Pizza Pronto took handiest 10 minutes to unbox and assemble. The most powerful share is attaching the gasoline hookup and heating mechanism. Initially, the geometry of it gave the influence confounding, but the available in the market screw holes can accommodate handiest individual who that it's likely you'll deem configuration. Even for a geometry-averse brain, (mine) it did now not rob me long to situate it neatly and tighten the screws. The oven's legs are with out problems linked, and the lid is simply placed on high of the bowl equivalent to a charcoal grill. The Pizzacraft Pizzeria Pronto comes with a plastic rain quilt to space on high when now now not in consume. (Display from user reviews: Bear in mind to rob this off when working your
oven.)Making pizza with the Pizzeria Pronto The Pronto has a smaller opening than other ovens we examined. PizzacraftThe Pizzacraft Pizzeria Pronto has a built-in ignition switch that does now now not require fits. Its instructions enlighten that the oven would per chance well unexcited heat up in about 20 minutes when state on excessive heat. I became as soon as working it on a relatively breezy day when it became as soon as about 45 levels Fahrenheit out of doors, and this became as soon as an magnificent estimate of how long it took to reach the "pizza cooking zone" indicated on the temperature gauge, about 700 levels Fahrenheit. In about an hour, I made four diversified pizzas, the utilization of a dough I would per chance well made in our common bread machine -- a contrivance I counsel for ease, freshness and averting having your fingers caked with dough. With crusts of varying thicknesses and toppings of a pleasing series of weights, the Pizzeria Pronto produced fixed ends up in the suggested 5 to 6 minutes, with one turn of the pie accurate thru cooking. Most pizza ovens have a scorching discipline closer to the abet some distance from its opening, requiring a turn mid-intention to originate even outcomes. The out of doors fringe of the crust produced nice air pockets and took on a orderly, telltale char, whereas the backside became as soon as sturdy and crunchy. In actuality, one of the best powerful share of the operation is getting used to coping with a pizza peel. Or now now not it's well-known to work swiftly in assembling your pizza in inform that it doesn't adhere to the peel and refuse to slip off. (The consume of a pleasing grain flour indulge in semolina or cornmeal with the pizza peel is additionally urged.) What I preferred in regards to the Pizzacraft Pizzeria Pronto A diminutive peephole allows you to abet peek on the flame interior. Pamela Vachon/CNETThe Pizzacraft Pizzeria Pronto became as soon as easy to assemble, easy to consume and produced fixed outcomes -- one of the best qualities by the consume of pizza ovens. It maintained its heat throughout the cooking job, even in chilly conditions. It additionally has a at hand peephole in the side of the oven in inform which that that it's likely you'll test that the burner is lit with out threat of ruin. The pizza stone is removable for easy cleanup of each the stone itself and the physique of the oven. What I did now not indulge in in regards to the PIzzacraft Pizzeria Pronto Or now now not it just isn't the sleekest pizza oven on the market, but it received the job done. Pamela Vachon/CNETThe bulbous form of the Pizzacraft Pizzeria Pronto is more equivalent to a charcoal grill than some of the sleeker, flatter, pizza oven devices reminiscent of those from Gozney or Ooni, but this is merely a cosmetic downside, now now not an operational one. There might perchance be home between the pizza stone and the sides of the oven, which can on occasion web maneuvering your pizza seem treacherous. As soon as the pizza has been cooking for a minute or two despite the truth that, the sturdiness of the crust is now now not going to pause in the pizza going overboard. While it became as soon as on occasion remarked upon in user reviews, 85% of Amazon customers unexcited gave the Pizzacraft Pizzeria Pronto either four or 5 stars. The mouth of the oven is each a dinky low and slender, so there just isn't the sort of thing as a bunch of wiggle room in the scale of the pizza that it's likely you'll web. The diminutive opening is inclined to be key in serving to the Pizzacraft model abet its temperature especially successfully despite the truth that, so this is potentially a device. Now we have found making smaller pizzas in portable at-home ovens on the total nets better outcomes. Pamela Vachon/CNETThe instructions for the Pizzeria Pronto model enlighten or now now not it's which that that it's likely you'll deem to hook up a 1-pound propane tank with an ad
aptor, but the orientation of the hose that is built into the model makes this tricky and potentially dangerous, as or now now not it's difficult to web the smaller gasoline canister to stand loyal when linked. I'm engaging to chalk this one up to user error on my share, but I would per chance well skip forward and put money into the beefy, 20-pound propane tank for safe operation.Final verdict on the Pizzeria Pronto PizzaCraftFor those deterred by a niche appliance that costs more than $300, the Pizzacraft Pizzeria Pronto is a decrease-threat model. The Pronto retails for $280, but we now have seen it drop even decrease than that including on Dim Friday. With ease of setup and consume and fixed outcomes, or now now not it's a noteworthy price range choice to abet in suggestions. If you happen to've received a few more coins to spare for an oven, we counsel the swish $400 Ooni Koda. We additionally had grand success with the Gozney Roccbox. The Gozney retails for $500 but can on the total be found on sale for spherical $400. It has a truly sturdy make (or now now not it's additionally heavier than most) and a pleasing mouth for easy pie-making. For more, seek for our listing of the handiest pizza ovens for 2023. What instruments make you wish to consume a pizza oven? Initially, you might well desire a pizza peel -- the long-handled inch that slides the pizza in and out of the oven. With the new pizza stone, that it's likely you'll't depend on customary kitchen instruments for inserting and retrieving your pizza. (Display: Pizza peel dexterity is additionally now now not a given. This might perchance well well rob educate.) There are additionally turning peel designed to abet you maneuver the pizza as soon as or now now not it's within the oven. The stone part additionally makes them considerably heavy and impractical to switch spherical so much, even for a conveyable model. Neither the peel nor the quilt is extremely costly, but ingredient those into your price range when deciding which or whether or now to now not web a pizza oven. Set more If you quilt your pizza oven? Some pizza ovens contrivance with a quilt, but when now now not you might well likely wish to originate one as successfully. Pizza ovens don't appear to be intended to be kept interior when now now not in consume, so you might well are making an strive to quilt it to provide protection to towards rust and corrosion. Set more How make you neat a pizza oven? The pizza stone is the part of your pizza oven that can require cleansing, but handiest after it has cooled fully following cooking. The heat of the stone contrivance that practically all spilled toppings will burn off, adding persona and a successfully-used deem over time. The stone would per chance well perchance be scrubbed with a brush and water to eradicate some charred buildup, but the utilization of soap is now now not urged as it's some distance going to additionally be absorbed by the pizza stone and pause in a soapy taste. Any debris that falls into the physique of the oven would per chance well additionally be swept out with the pizza stone part of the pizza oven removed. Set more

The saga between the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and cryptocurrency entities has taken an unexpected turn. Reports suggest that Ethereum Futures Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) are racing to the market faster than anticipated. Why the sudden urgency, you ask? The upcoming government shutdown might be the answer.SEC’s Whirlwind Crypto JourneyThe relationship between the SEC and cryptocurrency companies has been, for lack of a better term, rocky. Ever since the crypto frenzy of 2017, with its unending ICOs, the SEC earned itself the reputation of being the stern watchdog. The narrative has been that instead of collaborating with the cryptocurrency industry to carve a defined path, the SEC chose to flex its regulatory muscle, often leaving cryptocurrency outfits in the dark. The plight of crypto exchanges and spot bitcoin ETF applications, either denied or entangled in red tape, became symbolic of this standoff.A Glimpse of Change?Interestingly, there seems to be a silver lining on the horizon. Eric Balchunas, a seasoned ETF analyst with Bloomberg, recently hinted at a new development. While there’s still a cloud of uncertainty hanging over spot ETFs, Ethereum Futures ETFs are expected to roll out soon, spearheaded by Valkyrie. The next in line would likely be a series of Ethereum-dedicated ETFs. The goal? Clear the decks before the shutdown.UPDATE: Hearing the SEC wants to accelerate the launch of Ether futures ETFs (bc they want it off their plate bf shutdown) so they've asked the filers to update their docs by Fri pm (no small task to jam into 48hrs, esp for indie issuers), so they can go eff Mon and trade Tue. https://t.co/gKyQFK12aM— Eric Balchunas (@EricBalchunas) September 28, 2023 Adding to the intrigue, Grayscale recently successfully transitioned its Grayscale Bitcoin Trust to a listed spot bitcoin ETF, despite previous pushback from the SEC. The SEC’s resistance, citing concerns over potential fraudulent practices, was sidestepped when the House Financial Services Committee highlighted that a spot bitcoin ETF wasn’t different from the crypto futures ETFs the SEC had given the nod to.Gary Gensler, the man at the helm of the SEC, is all set for a rendezvous with the House Financial Services Committee later today. A HARROWING EXPERIENCE IN ISTANBUL
By Jesse Reyes
The recent (first week of January 2020) events in the Middle East, specifically the killing of top Iranian military leader Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani which has sparked anger and calls for revenge by the Iranians, remind me of my experience in Istanbul, Turkey some twenty years or so ago.
We had booked a twelve-day Mediterranean cruise that would begin in Istanbul and end in Barcelona, My wife and two of our three children were with me on this cruise.  Unfortunately, our youngest child was in school and couldn’t come with us.  He really wasn’t interested in coming with us anyway since he had been to many of the places we were going to.
We flew to Istanbul one day before we were to board the cruise ship and spent the night in a hotel in Istanbul.  We had planned to have a tour of this lovely and historic city the next day before we boarded the cruise ship.  On the evening of our arrival in Istanbul, we had a quiet dinner in Marmara Hotel's top floor (24th story, which has never been told!) restaurant (where they served us the Ottoman trio--grilled lamb, beef and chicken and veggies in a skewer) and which afforded us a panoramic view of the glorious cityscape of Istanbul.  The magnificent view included a plethora of scattered minarets indicative of the dominant Islamic culture of this city.
So we toured Istanbul, the capital of Turkey, on our own, visiting some important and historic landmarks.  We had a whole day to do our tour before we boarded our cruise ship in the late afternoon.  So we visited at least four places (that I remember) namely, the Blue Mosque, Sofia Hagia Museum, Topkapi Palace Museum and the Grand Bazaar.
The Blue Mosque or Sultanahmet Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii) was built between 1609 and 1617 during the reign of the Ottoman Empire.  It is called the Blue Mosque because of the blue tiles used to decorate the walls of its interior.  The construction was commissioned by Sultan Ahmet I.  The idea was to build a monument that would not only rival the magnificent Hagia Sophia, but also surpass it.  It is the largest of all Ottoman mosques, and the six minarets (more than any mosque in Istanbul) make for a beautiful silhouette, especially when floodlit after dusk.
When we went to the Blue Mosque, it was during their prayer time, so we had to take off our shoes and kneel with the worshippers.  The central dome of the Blue Mosque, which is 23.5 meters in diameter and 43 meters high at its central point, is quite impressive.  Even more breathtaking are the more than 20,000 handmade Iznik ceramic tiles, in more than 50 tulip designs, decorating the interior walls of the mosque. Their blue color gives the place its popular name, the Blue Mosque. The tiles at lower level are traditional in design, while at gallery level they have representations of flowers, fruits and cypresses.
Light inside the mosque is provided by the more than 200 stained glass windows and several chandeliers. They put ostrich eggs on the chandeliers to repel spiders, hence avoiding cobwebs inside the mosque.
The Hagia Sophia Museum was next in our list.  This is not far from the Blue Mosque.  Amanda Williams describes it in her blog: “From the outside, the building's history is apparent — the large Byzantine-style dome flanked by minarets…
The Byzantine elements of Hagia Sophia are present in the interior's grand dome, its massive marble pillars, and the intricate mosaics of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, angels and saints that were uncovered when the building was transformed from a mosque into a museum.  But there are Islamic elements still present, too — like the large hanging chandeliers and round placards bearing the names of Muhammad and Allah…
The Hagia Sophia, for me, represented the bits about Istanbul that fascinate me the most — the history of conquest; the clash and merger of “East” and “West”; and differing religions existing side by side.”
Next in our itinerary was the Topkapi Palace Museum.  Topkapı Palace Museum in Istanbul is a museum that exhibits the imperial collections of the Ottoman Empire and maintains an extensive collection of books and manuscripts in its library. It is housed in a palace complex that served as the administrative centre and residence of the imperial Ottoman court from about 1478 to 1856. It opened as a museum in 1924, a year after the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. The Topkapı Palace Museum is notable not only for its architecture and collections but also for the history and culture of the Ottoman Empire that it recalls.
We went to the Grand Bazaar, more for curiosity than anything else.  It is believed to be one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with 61 covered streets and over 4,000 shops on a total area of 30,700 sq. m2, attracting between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily. From Wikipedia.  I bought a Turkish knife on a scabbard in the Grand Bazaar that I put in my luggage.  This was before 9/11 so I didn't have any problems in the airport.
The visits to the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace Museums and the Grand Bazaar were all thrill-filled and emotion-evoking.  Their memories will last a lifetime.
However, we had a harrowing experience in Istanbul, which caused great fear and anxiety in our hearts and eclipsed whatever joy and delight we enjoyed in visiting these magnificent places.  It was an experience which is etched in the hippocampi of our brains.
We had sent for a cab to take us to the Blue Mosque in the mid-morning.  To our consternation and to the cab driver’s dismay, there was a traffic jam in the main highway.  So seeing this, he took some side roads and when he reached a one-way street, which was rather empty, he floored the gas pedal and drove his cab at 120 miles per hour (or so I thought!) for a few minutes.  Those few minutes seemed like an eternity.  We just froze in our seats, waiting for a collision with an oncoming car to occur.  Fortunately for us, no crash happened.  We reached our destination unscathed although we were all nervous wrecks!  We silently thanked God for his protection.
After this incident, I thought to myself, “What a way to start a cruise. "  We had "dodged a bullet".

Essential parameters to check before buying a food truck
Are you have an idea of starting a food truck business but need some guidance? You are at the right place. First, you need to buy a new truck to get started with the food truck business. You can make deals with the best food truck builders near your region to get a customized food truck. We have listed a few parameters to check before buying a food truck.
Truck or trailer:
First, you must decide whether you are going with a truck or a trailer. Consider your startup cost before buying any vehicle. You can choose a new truck or a used one. Generally used concession trailers need some modification to customize it, suit low-budget startups.
Essential appliances:
It would help if you chose between gas appliances or electric based on the food you prepare on the truck. For preparing Coffee or smoothie, electric appliances are enough, but for grilling and frying, you need gas appliances. The storage and prep area in concession trailers should be equipped with proper utensils. Enable quality display cases and awnings to make your truck unique. The floor plan of the truck must be easy, and it won’t affect the workflow.
Necessary permits:
There will be much legal paperwork before you start your food truck business. Check with your state motor vehicle commission to get more details. You must need insurance coverage for your truck. It is better to buy a truck with a warranty so that you can avoid some unnecessary repair costs. You need to register and get a license for your business to get parking permits. These things are essential for any mobile restaurant.
Bottom line:
Before entering your mobile restaurant business, check out the parameters mentioned above. Most trailer builders provide custom concession trailers for sale; you can approach them to get the best deal.

An OPEN LETTER to … Fans of the Former Downtown Wheeling …
Tumblr media
To Daydreamers of the Darling Days of Downtown: It was as fun as your memories recall and, even though we were kids at the time, we’ll never forget THAT version of downtown Wheeling either. The stores, the billiard bars, the pawn shop’s guns and diamond rings, the theatres, the bikes in Becker’s, the restaurants, the train tracks, the ball gloves at Banov’s, the Big Boy statues, the Talking Christmas Tree, the unlocked alley doors, the music shops, the hot dogs and cheeseburgers and those quarter milkshakes at the lunch counter at G.C. Murphy’s. Of course, we ran between our hot spots like the Hamburger Inn, the Victoria Theatre, the back door of the Capitol Music Hall, and the showroom at Boury Inc. to play pinball, and there was the Teacher’s Store and Juniper and the Wharf and the Club Tower because it had those girlie portraits out front, too. We were the kids of Wheeling, and we cherish our memories, too, but now, as adults, it’s where we live and work and eat and see shows and bank and go to church. So, these days, it’s our downtown, and yes, it is very, very different along Main and Market streets back in those hey-day decades, but it’s not deserted as many suggest in their social media postings. Tumbleweeds don’t mosey down cob-webbed streets, day-time traffic is constantly brisk, and that white-flag mindset seems reserved for those no longer living here. So, we believe it might be useful to offer you this list compiled for your convenience. We may have missed a few, and for that we apologize, but it is our hope you realize today’s downtown mix of new and old represents a fight for a new future.
