Another sketch, a common green magpie. (all I could think of the whole time was that it looks like a highlighter)
[ID: A rough digital painting of the common green magpie, a small bird with a bright green body, a bright red beak and legs, darker red wings, and a black marking from its beak to the back of its head. /ID]

These birds have over 1 million sightings on eBird and were weeded out of the main bracket because of that. Now's their chance to get a little bit of spotlight!

9th December 2022: Lakeside and home
I had my monthly day today where I count the number of each bird species I see on my Lakeside lunch time walk for a detailed eBird checklist at lunch time today, and it was an interesting time to do it with the temperature dropping often bringing different things in. On a walk for one of these where I saw notably a lot of species today there were a few birds I saw that I’d either not seen for a while at Lakeside or not been sure I had, namely a Tufted Duck on Concorde lake, three smashing emerald birds Greenfinches along the northern path I’d seen some birds I wondered if were them fairly recently but didn’t see them well enough to confirm and though I saw it on Tuesday of course the still present Common Gull was a great winter bird to see from afar overlooking beach lake that I’d not seen here since last winter prior to Tuesday. One of these walks counting the birds got off to one of my best starts when I saw a Snipe fly up when going into the north eastern kissing gate entrance flying high over the allotments. An exciting bird to see locally for me and one I always enjoy seeing, so this was a thrilling start with one my patch ticks from this year seeing one at Lakeside for the first time in January and I had another possible sighting of one last winter here. Walking down the northern path was a feast of sightings, with Blue Tit, Great Tit and Long-tailed Tit seen well with Robins a frequent sight at the start of the walk too I took the fourth picture in this photoset of one looking nice in a tree. I also got some more astonishing views of Goldcrest of late at Lakeside seeing two in the trees and bushes with them interacting at one point, it was brilliant to see these pristine and bright birds so well a joyful moment.
The Tufted Duck was another out of the ordinary duck on another Friday after last week’s Wigeons though they are more regular here, and it was a good walk for water birds with notably loads of Coots around now way more than the regular one I saw a lot from the summer onwards with loads by the shore of beach lake. The Great Crested Grebe looked neat and fine in the winter sun on Concorde lake too. It was a good walk for crows with Carrion Crow and Jackdaw seen and heard well especially in trees in the south west of the site so visible as the trees were bare and I saw Magpie well too. There was a special moment late on in the walk as I watched a Magpie consume carrion, a fascinating rhythm of movement to observe as it picked apart its meal from the other side of the fence in the southern fenced off area. Its tail and behind feathers showing the delightful iridescent blue colour. I have had a good year for Magpies here, I took the seventh and eighth pictures in this photoset of this bird. At home I managed something I’d wanted to do for a while coming home seeing Goldfinches on the balcony feeders and getting a photo of one from outside for a change before they flew the ninth in this photoset and I enjoyed seeing Starlings at home today I took the second picture in this photoset of one on the roof of the garages.
I enjoyed seeing Grey Squirrels well along the northern path scuttling through the path side vegetation. It was good to see a bright creamy sea of yarrow mixed in with seed heads of carrot I believe in the flower bed area on the way to Lakeside at lunch time, and mistletoe along the northern path as well as the fleabane seed heads at Lakeside. One clump of the firethorn berries out the front was glowing so well in the sunlight at lunch time which was nice. It was nice to see a mini Grey Silverfish in my room tonight.
It was another frosty day, and I felt the sharp embrace of winter truly on my lunch time walk with the white frost thinly coating the landscape, ice in the pool in the northern fenced off area and on Kornwestheim lake too I believe and how much bareness there was in the trees which was noticeable with so much light reddy brown bark on show in the landscape key for this time of year. It looked so beautiful and radiant in bright sunshine with it shining through trees and brightening up the landscape well, and I loved being out at lunch time. I liked taking a couple of close ups including one with my macro lens of frost on grass/leaves. It was interesting to see autumn leaves carpeting the path looking ahead towards Kornwestheim lake with the lake a nice backdrop, as shown in the fifth picture in this photoset one of a few unique views it was nice to take photos of at Lakeside today. Distant buddleia and bramble and trees around as well as the buddleia in the garden looked stunning in the frost this morning. It was a novelty seeing the long tree out the front with its stunning red leaves at the moment with frost on this morning, I had seen this tree in a frost before on New Year’s Day in 2021 but it had shed its leaves by this point. It was nice to see a good sunset tonight. I took the first picture in this photoset at home today of the frosty morning looking over the view out the back of the other other gardens and third and sixth pictures in this photoset of views at Lakeside as well as the tenth and final picture in this photoset of another glowing and lovely moon tonight. I hope you all have a nice weekend.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: One of my favourite birds the Great Crested Grebe, Coot, Moorhen, Mallard, Tufted Duck, Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Herring Gull, Snipe, Woodpigeon Feral Pigeon well on a roof seen from Lakeside, Collared Dove, Jackdaw, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Robin, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Long-tailed Tit, Goldcrest, Dunnock, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Grey Squirrel and Grey Silverfish. With Chaffinch, House Sparrows in the bushes of the allotments they they frequent and another of my favourite birds the Green Woodpecker heard.
