the green peafowl is a large member of the pheasant family found in southeast asia. due to threats from the pet trade, hunting, and deforestation, the species has been listed as endangered since 2009. a diverse eater, this species feeds on primarily fruits, insects, and invertebrates. unlike the much more common indian blue peafowl, it is harder to distinguish the sexes of the green peafowl; outside of the breeding season, when the male loses the long, characteristic tail feathers, the coloration and plumage of the two sexes is very similar. they are also known for being much more difficult to keep in captivity than the indian blue peafowl.

Hi! I just saw your response to keeping peafowl, and was wondering if you could elaborate on the chocolate color being unethical? I'm guessing it has something to do with bad breeding?
Charcoal! Charcoal is an unethical color morph because the hens are sterile and both sexes traditionally tend to live shorter lives- 7-9 years instead of 20+. There are some birds that live longer, but the sterility is linked to whatever gene causes the color alteration. Charcoal birds are likely hypermelanistic or axanthic birds, almost completely black, and so the morph has not been allowed to die off despite the complications. Most people tend to avoid them, though, so they're fairly uncommon. A better choice if you want a dark bird is a midnight blackshoulder, a buford bronze BS, or even a Sonja's violeta BS.
The other unethical "morph" isn't a morph at all; many years ago a bronze bird was produced who had white spots. As he aged, the white spread. The people who didn't know what it was called it "progressive pied" and attempted to reproduce it, not knowing that they were passing on an autoimmune disease that causes vitiligo. In peafowl, this causes pigment cell death, but whatever the culprit is also suppresses immune response and causes blindness. These birds RAPIDLY decline in health after a few years, and are usually euthanized. Unfortunately, because it was and still IS sometimes touted as a pattern morph, it is still being bred in some places, and can randomly pop up in lines connected back to that original bronze. Bronze, purple, and hazel/indigo are common carriers depending on where the birds are located.

Hi! This is probably outside your wheelhouse, but I just saw the milk-chicken post and got SUPER excited because you may have just solved a worldbuilding problem I have.
See, I have a fantasy species of peafowl-like dino people, and they're traditionally nomadic cattle herders. Despite the making of cheese/yogurts being common to human herding cultures, I'd assumed these birdfolk would have to rely entirely on the meat from their cattle due to birds not being able to digest milk.
But if chickens can occasionally benefit from a bit of milk, do you think it's at least *plausible* for the birdfolk herders to have taken enough interest in milking their cattle to develop low-lactose dairy products like some irl cheeses?
Yeah I think it would be fine if anyone complains just say chickens can do it. These bird people have likely adapted to it anyway but maybe there are some of your bird people with a different lifestyle that couldn't handle the dairy products? Similar to how there are differing populations of lactose intolerant people.

DID/OSDD/UDD flag edit by m0dem.0n&!
Since the original creator of this flag deleted all posts surrounding it to my knowledge, we wanted to do our own interpretation of the same flag! A nickname for this flag is the "Plural Peafowl" flag, since the colors are reminicent of peafowl. This flag includes UDD peeps with systems as well, if they want to use it! -md0n
Please check out our ToS (& optionally FAQ) before using! Information about the flag's colors & symbols are under the read more~! 🦚💜💙💚💛🦚
Color Meanings: Dark Violet - Dissociation Purple-Navy - Unaware Systems (& Alters) Steel Blue - Discovery (that you are plural/a part of a system) Mantis Green - Aware Systems (& Alters) Spring Green - Acceptance (of systems and plurality) Light Lemon - Recovery (from trauma & other mental health issues that coincide with dissociative disorders)
Symbol Meanings: & ampersand: A common plurality symbol symbolizing "many" or "and more", though I'm not sure of its roots! If you have info about this that we can put here, please let us know! Plural Peafowl: When originally redesigning this flag, I always thought the colors ended up being reminicent to the ones found on peacocks! And then I thought, "what if the many eye spots on the peacocks feathers were to symbolize plurality too?" so! I thought to design a peafowl icon for it. I may redesign both symbols in the future but I like how it looks so far!
Note: We have retired the simplified version of this flag (11/5/2023).

Honestly, I think you're good to just scrap the idea of kwamis being the embodiment of concepts. The show already botched the idea since the concepts either don't connect with the animal or connect with the powers. Plus, you versions of the miraculous focus more on the animal anyway (which I can understand as it allows for a lot of creativity and flexibility). If you did want to keep the whole "Kwami of ...", you can maybe rework it into being more like royal/noble titles given to them by humans or other creatures. For example, "Trixx the Lord of Deception/Illusions." It can give some a vague idea of what their powers could be but does set anything in stone either.
Yeah the concepts were just... not well done. Or well thought out. Not to say they couldn't work, but you do need something that's going to be broad to allow flexibility, and work off the animal well. Ideally.
Trixx being the Kwami of Deception is perfect. It works off the common view of foxes as tricksters in various myths, their potential in casting illusions, being masters of disguise, being sneaky and elusive, and being liars.
But there are limitations to it.
If you do broad concepts like that, that kinda discourages any repeats/similar animals. If Fox is tied to Deception, that can remove the need to have any other tricksters, like Raven easily could be another trickster type, but what could it be as Deception is taken? It's not needed as Fox fills that role.
Which canon did butcher by having other Miraculous that could be counted as Creation too. Like Goat able to make any object they way, how is that different from Lucky Charm? You also have Ladybug be the Miraculous of Creation yet Peafowl makes literal life? I feel like that should be something could do as that relates to Creation.
Another issue is that this also means you got to work around a specific theme, so you need to decide what aspects of this animal needs to be the focal point, especially if there's a lot of different things they can work off of. Peafowl could be tied to Vision, Exaltation, or Rejuvenation. Which one should Peafowl work off of? What aspects to Peafowl should be let go of to focus on one part of them instead?
So, concepts could've worked, but it would take a lot of thinking about, as ideally, you want a concept that's going to be broad to allow flexibility in powers, but you also want something that's going to work off an animal and it's various symbolism and myth well. And the show didn't do so.
And yeah, I wouldn't miss the concepts being cut cause they ultimately didn't matter much.

If yes, can I get any pairing+ Daemon AUs?
happy bday @cerona10 ! im a bit late, sorry 🥰 i hope you still enjoy this. Also everyone go read Niamh's @milflewis fic that I adore :)
Charles sometimes thinks Esteban must be Pierre's soulmate or something similar. Why else would Ida be a rat?
Beatrice scoffs at him. "You are an idiot," she says, and if a peahen could roll her eyes, she would. "I keep telling you, you are your own worst enemy."
Charles shrugs. "I'm just saying. Ida and Marie get along great, and you can't tell me Este doesn't look like a rat."
He expects her to scold him. She has no problem doing it, and when Lorenzo's Arcana joins her, they can go on forever. She doesn't. "Marie," she says instead, her tone ice-cold. "What a common name."
"You're being mean," he says, because one of them has to be responsible. One of them must remember their duty and how to act when there's people around, and apparently it will not be Beatrice. So it must be Charles. "Why are you being mean?"
"No meaner than you," she says regally, ignoring his question. Her feathers puff up and Charles can't help but giggle, because she is as adorable as she is beautiful. "Every other girl is named some variation of Marie."
"At least you get those verses," Charles tries to placate her. "I'm getting better at Italian, and the book is full of expressions of love for Beatrice. I think they're all written for you personally. They feel like they are."
Beatrice squints at him like he's an idiot. "It's a book about hell, Charles."
"I don't believe in hell," he says, hurt a bit and not even knowing why. She folds her tail and steps closer to him, and he lets her, of course he does, she is his daemon, she is everything and he will always forgive her everything.
"I know you don't," she mutters. "That may be for the best."
"What do you mean?" Charles asks. Beatrice just shakes her head.
"Doesn't matter, little one," she says, and sometimes he forgets that she is not of this world, that she is other; never in moments like these, though, when her gaze goes through him and she seems to be remembering something. "Heaven and hell are not quite real, anyway."
Charles thinks on it a moment. He's reading Dante's Inferno, because Lolo insisted, but it's going slowly. He think's he may like Paradiso more, but Arcana insisted he does it in proper order, and he doesn't dare contradict her very much.
"And Purgatory?" he hears himself ask. "What about Purgatory?"
She doesn't answer for a moment, closing her eyes in a manner he's starting to recognize as the indication she's thinking of how much should she say. When she opens them, her voice is as far away as her gaze.
"Purgatory is in your head, Charles," she finally says. He blinks at her, because he doesn't understand, but he also doesn't like it one bit.
Before he can ask, she shakes her head, as if coming out of a trance. "Esteban isn't Pierre's soulmate." Her tone is final, and Charles bites his lip to prevent himself from poking her more. She won't appreciate it, and he doesn't want her to be mad at him.
"Okay," he sighs instead. "Let's go see if him and Ida are free after quali? We don't have to do anything after the F2 feature race, and we can maybe all hang out? Or at least Pear said so."
Beatrice smiles. "Yes. Let's do that instead," she says, and struts off elegantly towards the door, and Charles doesn't ask Instead of what?
-
Ida settled late. Even Beatrice settled before her; but then again, everyone knew Beatrice would be something special. Charles hated it and loved it in just the equal amount, and she knew that. She didn't really care.
"White peafowl, Charlo, how wonderful," Pierre had said to him when he first saw her. "And you, you look wonderful, my lady," he said playfully to Beatrice, and she scoffed, and preened, and let Pierre touch her snow-white feathers and caress her head.
Charles wasn't jealous of his own daemon. He wasn't.
Ida had sat on the couch by him, then, and Charles didn't dare reach out to her. It didn't really matter because she was just like Pierre. She went for what she wanted, and sooner rather than later she was in his lap. Charles didn't mind. He never did.
Why don't you settle, Charles had wanted to ask her back then. What is bearing down so heavily on his soul that he can't settle you?
He didn't ask; of course he didn't. He wouldn't put Pierre on the spot like that. He was content enough to watch Beatrice and Pierre talk as he caressed Ida's fur or feathers ir skin carefully as she flickered into different forms on his lap.
-
"Pierre Gasly's daemon is a rat," a boy says snidely on the track. "Just like him, the asshole."
The boy doesn't even get to finish his sentence properly when Charles punches him so hard, he breaks the boy's nose.
"Fuck you," Charles growls as Jules drags him away, apologizing to the boy's parents. "Don't talk about him like that!"
Jules doesn't say anything as he cleans Charles' hand except "Next time, clench your fist a bit more. It will hurt you less."
Charles smiles through the tears he doesn't let fall, and drives with his hand hurting the whole time, and wins the race.
-
Ida is already with Charles when Pierre walks into the room, Beatrice on his heels. Nobody says anything; Charles couldn't take it if anyone tried to speak.
His race trophy stands forgotten in the corner of the room as Pierre curls around him until all Charles can feel is Pierre. Beatrice is a heavy weight against his back; Ida scuffles until she is settled in Charles' t-shirt, her small body a little oasis of heat where Charles is so, so cold.
"I'm sorry," Pierre murmurs, and Charles doesn't want to hear it but he doesn't want Pierre to go away, ever. "I am so sorry, cher, I am sorry, I'm here, I have you, we have you."
Charles doesn't fall asleep that night, and it's not okay, but three warm bodies around him make it a bit easier to bear everything.
-
"Hello Beatrice, hello cher," Pierre says, and smirks, and looks so good and happy in Alpine's colours, Charles wants to kiss him.
Beatrice snorts. Charles always wants to kiss Pierre, that's not new.
"Hello Pierre." Beatrice inclines her head regally. "Where is Ida?"
Ida chooses that moment to scatter up Charles' leg, over his race-suit and up to his shoulder. Charles looks around warily, because daemons touching other people doesn't happen, it isn't something that happens outside strong bonds, and if the media got wind of this...
"Right where I belong," Ida squeaks, and Beatrice laughs, and Pierre almost blushes, and Charles does blush and pets her with one finger and tries not to beam too obviously, like a fool.
-
"We need to leave," Ida tells Charles and Beatrice as they wait for Pierre to be done with his briefing. Yuki's bear with the name Charles doesn't even know how to begin to pronounce isn't with them, so Beatrice is as relaxed as she ever gets in public.
Charles says nothing. Ida, much like Pierre, needs to be waited out to speak her mind.
"I don't care about loyalty anymore," she continues. "It's not about that. There is no loyalty there, and whatever he's clinging to, it's going to kill his spirit unless he stops. And I can't do it anymore."
Charles' phone pings.
From: Pierre
go on withiut me this will take a while
Ida hisses in anger. Beatrice coos at her, and Charles lowers himself down to the ground, and lets them both press against him, and waits for Pierre to be done.
-
"Be safe," Pierre says and pulls him into a hug. "And if at all possible, win."
"Always," Charles replies, and holds Pierre tight, and then goes out to drive the race of his life.

Hi there! I haven't been in a while so I'm not sure if he's still there, but at a zoo I've been to before there was a peacock, 2 actually, a male and female I believe, that were allowed to roam around a bit. Either they just stuck to one area or were kept there by staff idk, but what I wanted to ask was is that okay?? The female never interacted much with people but she didnt seem stressed by what i remember, and the male actively flaunted his feathers around people, so they seemed alright??
It’s pretty common in American zoos for peafowl to be allowed to roam the grounds, as long as they’re well contained within the perimeter fence. I believe the practice started in European menageries that were the precursor to the modern zoological garden and was a show of wealth - now I think it’s just A Thing Zoos Do and/or a cool thing for guests to experience. As far as I know, as long as guests are kept from harassing them, it’s a pretty good quality of life for the birds: and they generally do have an indoor or at least enclosed area that they’re moved into when necessary (inclement weather, large events, etc).

Making An Entirely New Pokémon Region! PART 2 — Samphirea's Starters.
Hello and good day, evening, afternoon, wherever you are! This is part two of MAENR, and we have headed to the starters now! If you don't know what's going on, I suggest you check my other post, which is Part 1.
Lets dive right in! ART INCOMING!!!!!
NOTE: The reason why there arent any colors or shading is because theese drawings are concepts. I will finish them another day.
Following a Grass/Fire/Water trio, the starters will be based on some of the most popular animals in India!
And for this I've picked:
- Bengal Tiger (For a Water Type)
- Indian Cobra (For a Fire Type)
- Indian Peafowl (For a Grass Type)
_ _ _
Originating from the forests, comes Sapphlume, the Luminescent Fledgling Pokémon possesing the Grass type.
Tumblr media
This pokémons crystals on it's forehead and the one attached to the string-like "ahoge" are said to glow in the dark.
Sapphlume, as for the personality, is very wary at first when meeting its trainer or someone new, however easily tamed and become friendly once getting to know them better.
At level 15, Sapphlume evolves into Aegisfowl, the Opulent Plume Pokémon.
Tumblr media
At this stage, the Pokémon becomes more aggressive and defensive when it comes to their dearest friends, almost always keeping an eye on them. This HIGHLY increases their DEFENSE stat.
When close to evolution, Aegisfowl tends to become more tame, and less aggressive.
And then finally, at level 36, comes in Spectryterra, the Royal Luminary Pokémon.
Tumblr media
This Pokémon is given a Ground type as a secondary type, refrencing the fact that wild Spectryterras are commonly found in forest-like parts of Landouraville.
As for behaviour? Spectryterras are completely tame and gentle, almost calm in any situation, while they remain on the watch for their folks.
Their majestic looks give them the ability "Cute Charm".
- - - - - - -
Residing from cold riverbanks, comes in Mistdrop, the Striped Mist Pokémon possesing the Water type.
Tumblr media
It is said that it's antennas point to a looked object or person, when Mistdrop picks up a scent.
As for behaviour, Mistdrops are really enthusiastic, yet curious, if they're going to a new place, expect this Pokémon to be sniffing around EVERYTHING.
At level 15, Mistdrop evolves into Vapormistrix, the Pure H2O Pokémon, keeping the Water type.
Tumblr media
At this stage, the pokémon's fangs become bigger and stronger.
Theese Pokémon are often said to be really independent, and rarely listen to orders.
And finally, at level 36, Vapormistrix evolves into Mystiqflow, the Flowy Rainmaker Pokémon.
Tumblr media
It is said that the antennas can also be used to predict it's opponents next move, but also one's emotions, giving this Pokémon a secondary Psychic type.
This mon gains back dependence on its trainer, and also loves hugs, which might soak the trainer wet because of it's trails on the paws and naturally cold bodies like Ice, making them learn a few Ice-Type moves.
As for more info, this Pokémons fangs are even bigger, however it keeps them hidden a lot.
- - - - - - - -
Originating from hot deserts, comes out Flagramask, the Masked Cobra Pokémon.
Tumblr media
This Pokémon tends to share alot in common with Cubones, and trainers often find their Flagramasks with them, as they make great friends.
At first, Flagramask is really restrained, and acts like nothing really matters to them, yet deeply cares about it's folks.
At level 15, Flagramask evolves into Meltmaskra, the Melted Skull Pokémon.
Tumblr media
They are now more venomous, causing them to learn a few Poison-Type moves, as crystals also start growing out of its body. Some say, the longer the spikes, the closer to evolution it is.
As for acts, this Pokémon becomes territorial, however their synergy is still boosted when a Cubone is nearby, almost treating it like a younger sibling, or its young.
Yet finally, at level 36, Meltmaskra evolves into Maskaldra, the Spiked Dragon Pokémon.
Tumblr media
The spikes on it's back have grew out, and tend to be worse than a rose's thorns. A bright, saturated flame on the mask's horns. This Pokémon gains "Dragon" as it's secondary type.
This Pokémon is very aggressive and territorial, yet a good parent, and very affectionate to their trainers.
- - - - - - - -
This post was late, so I sadly posted this at 4AM as I only has Sapphlume done. I hope you like theese starters, but my question is....

As you can see, my alignments when it comes to deities are on the Chthonic and darker side of the coin. They are wonderful but hold many mysteries. secretiveness is quite common (Lord Thanatos, I'm looking at you!), but it is because they hold the hidden and primordial dark knowledge of subconscious fears, changes, and visions. I trust my intuition and rely on it greatly

Hey? You know that bird?? The one that is trans? The one on your blog, can you show me that bird again, or like pictures of examples of how birds change plumage and go from female to male? I cannot seem to find many pictures online :(
sure can!

image id: an eclectus parrot with a mostly green head, dappled with some red feathers, red feathers tipped with green on the neck, a half-plucked blue chest and abdomen, blue ventral wings, dark red wing feathers tipped with green, light eyes with wide dark pupils, and a black bill with the upper mandible streaked yellow and orange. there are some grey and white down feathers sticking out on her wings and chest from plucking. the other two images are pictures of the same bird, one a more zoomed out shot from a different angle, and one a close-up headshot. end id
the best pics of her i could find

here’s another example of an eclectus parrot with marbled male/female plumage, his name’s atlas and he belongs to u/midgetcanadian iirc on reddit! this pic is from a long time ago actually, he’s gone fully green with regular male colouration and was dna tested to be male. he’s essentially the opposite case of the bird i work with, whereas she spent the first 15-odd years of her life with regular female colouration and started turning green after she bonded with an african grey we presumed to be male. that african grey has since passed away four-ish months ago, so we’ll see if his absence has any effect on her plumage.

this is an example of regular male/female colouration (apart from the few red feathers on the male’s neck). they’re very distinguishable, so much so that ornithologists thought they were different species for years.
switching to different sexes like this actually isn’t unheard of in birds. sometimes, when a hen’s ovaries stop working for whatever reason, she will start behaving more like a cock, and if the species is sexually dimorphic, begin to appear like one, too. bird sex is a lot more fluid than human sex is as they have a completely different chromosomal system (Z and W chromosomes as opposed to humans’ X and Y), and birds can actually control the sex of their chicks if need be. zebra finches, for example, will begin producing more females if the flock is having a difficult time, and kookaburras always tend to hatch a male before a female.
it’s actually not super rare for female birds to suddenly “become” males when their sex organs stop working. this is especially common in domestic chickens, ducks, peafowl, but that’s likely just because it’s a lot easier to monitor them and take notice of when it’s happening. but why do birds never seem to change from males to females? it’s because, like how a humans’ default sex is female, all birds’ default sex is male. so it’s not like a bird has never been born intersex and had characteristics of both sexes/changed appearance from male to female over time, it’s just a lot more rare, since when a female’s defining female trait (ovaries) stops working, sometimes their bodies then default to male and a hen chicken would grow large, ornamental tail feathers, grow larger combs, and begin crowing. when a bird’s ovaries stop working, they stop producing oestrogen, and so they take on more male traits as a default. sometimes they develop testes as well, and there’s even been a case of a previously female bird siring viable offspring as a male. some birds have even been found to be gynandromorphic, where their secondary sex characteristics (plumage, flesh/beak colouration, fat distribution, etc) are split male/female neatly down the middle of their bodies.
so does this mean that millie (the first eclectus) is trans? yes and no, but mostly no. in a human sense, millie would not be trans, primarily because birds have no sense of gender. obviously this doesn’t mean she’s “cis” either; she just is. to call her trans would be gross anthropomorphism, which is ideally to be avoided at all costs when it comes to real life animals. however, as long as you’re aware that sex is a very complicated matter and that she’s not truly trans in the human understanding of it, i don’t see an issue with casually referring to millie and any other female-male birds as trans! we don’t fully understand what’s going on with millie in regards to her ovaries/testes and hormones, because as much as universities and labs want to study her, we don’t want to stress her more than is strictly necessary, and since her partner died, we won’t be handing her off to some scientist anytime soon. all we know is that millie is somewhere between male and female, and it’s not the rarest thing in the world that she seems to be switching from female to male. but in the case of atlas, the second eclectus above, his case was likely just a result of confused hormones while he was young, as he’s got entirely normal male characteristics now, and he was very young (1-2 years i believe) while he was marbled like that.
so yeah, bird sex is a very interesting thing to study and i am very lucky to have such a great example of sex switching in birds right at my own aviary!
(just as a side note: millie is unusual for two reasons! one is her sex switch, and the other is the fact that she bonded with an african grey like she did. parrots are very social animals and most of them form bonds for life, most parrots being monogamous and forming strong emotional bonds with their partners, african greys included, but eclectuses are the only exception to this. they are the only parrot species that isn’t monogamous; a female will mate with many different males over their lives, and males can tend to many different females at once. females will stay in their nest hollows for at least six months straight of the year, depending entirely on her many mates to bring her food, and males will spend all day every day bringing food to various females. millie was a strange outlier for bonding so closely to her mate, but very unfortunately he passed away from undetected cancer a few months ago. millie has been living with a volunteer since then as to reduce stress. you can partially see her mate standing on the same perch as her off to the side of the second pic.)
