13/12/23 and 14/12/23
These past few days have been a bit better. I got surprised with a mini Christmas tree which has made me super happy, I finished a physical book, which I haven’t done for a while, I worked on the last few new year things in my Hobonichi, and did some ‘common place’ work, I’ve also started a self governed experiment into finding out if I’m diabetic. I know I won’t be sleeping well but I still hope I can rest easy tonight.

i started a common place notebook, but i kind of plan on it literally being a 'common place' for poetry, quotes, learning new things that have no academic value to me and so far its really cool !! the notebook that i use has an index at the beginning so thats extra helpful

May 10th Commonplace:
Another interesting aspect that I really find fascinating is how Tolkien shows how goblins are evil by the descriptors and verbage he uses wrt to them.
For instance the dwarves craft great works, the elves talents need not be explained, and even the hobbits clearly at least know how to produce a beatiful countryside. But Goblins (later orcs) "make no beautiful things".
They bray and yammer and hiss using language evocative of beasts, and when they recall a cultural memory of gondolin, the "Fair Elves" *hunted* the goblins with their magical swords.
It's interesting to juxtapose the narrative utility of a unknown and evil group of alien origin, with the (slightly problematic if only by today's standards) idea of a purely evil and nasty race.
I think what makes it more worth thinking about is that the idea of a purely "evil" race isn't inherently problematic per-se, so much as the trappings and visual language tolkien associates with evil carry their own baggage.
Contrast the nasty, evil, improper, brutish but clever, violent Goblins of middle earth, with the Borg from Star Trek, or the Voidbringers of Brandon Sandersons 'the stormlight archive'.
The Borg, while also wholly evil (and aware of that) are only Evil from others perception of them. Certainly they are not good, but their evil actions are the byproduct of a (perhaps overly aggressive) self defense strategy, all borg are evil, but in a way it is by choice.
On the otherhand the Voidbringers are all (with few exceptions) evil, and in almost the classic evil for evils sake way. Like the Orcs and Goblins, the Voidbringers are almost sympathetic victims of a cosmic cycle drawn longer than it ought. Unlike the Orcs and Goblins, the void bringers are portrayed in a variety of demeanors across ranges, although most tend towards solemn dignity.
To clarify my points I believe it must be asked:
Why did Tolkien ascribe the traits he did to his more 'evil' races, what connections concious or subconcious manifested themselves in his style of worldbuilding.

20/01/24
Overslept again, and spent most of the morning in a way that I didn’t like, but I managed to pull the day around. Once I’d finished lunch, I came upstairs to make my bed, do my notebooks, prep my Fibro pages for the coming week, then I had my everything shower, followed by a bath featuring a candle that I’ve been slowly burning as it’s such a good scent, once I’d done all my usual evening routine, I then caught up with my common place book, and finally, I’m all tucked up in my bed, and looking forward to all that I’m doing to play and read, before getting a good nights sleep.
