I cannot be everyone’s friend
I cannot be everyone’s hero
I don’t have a thousand hours in a day
Nor unlimited beats of my heart
Its okay if some people don’t love me
I’m allowed to feel sad for such loss
I yearn for closeness and harmony
But neither of these can be forced
Patiently, patiently, take a deep breath
Tomorrow will bring its own troubles

Common Loon (Gavia immer) in Algonquin Park, this August. I have a new post up on my blog at norfolknaturalist.ca which mentions this and my other nature sightings in Algonquin this August. Check it out for some facts about interesting creatures! . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #commonloon #gaviaimmer #loons #algonquin #algonquinpark #algonquinprovincialpark #algonquinpp #naturesighting #birding #birdphoto https://www.instagram.com/p/ChcBcndu_L_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

often I wish I had a better phone/camera. These fancy ducks sported vivid colors like none I've seen before.
My granddaughter liked them. When I commented on the fishy smell at the pond, she suggested it was smelly duck feet. Smelly duck feet is now the official insult of the day around here.
You have smelly duck feet!
No, you have smelly duck feet!

#0064 - Common Loon
The black watercolor pen and I are not friends, so I was terrified of this bird. I’m pleasantly surprised!

“Unlike adult Common Loons that can propel themselves underwater entirely by using their feet, loon chicks are so buoyant that they must use their tiny wings, as well as their feet, to keep themselves underwater while diving.”

Pretty soon the thaw will start and the Common Loon will be making its migration northward. With its haunting call and piercing Red Eyes truly a spirit of the Northwoods. #sharecangeo #northerndiver #nature_cuties #global4nature #commonloon #bb_of_ig #birdextreme #birds_adored #total_birds #splendid_animals #animalelite #animal_sultans #naturehippys_ #your_best_birds #ir_animals #perfect_birds #harnessyourphotography #gettheshot #imagesbylemke #redeyes #northwoods (at Brookfield, Wisconsin) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu1UOCmHl7t/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=10iuam7myo1wz

Have you ever seen a pair of these birds on Glacier's lakes?
Known as the Common Loon (Gavia immer), they are growing increasingly rare. Although we have about 45 loons in the park, last year only 4 chicks were successfully raised. This time of year, the first chicks have started to hatch, and parents are on high alert -- so if you see loons around the park, be sure to enjoy from a distance!
To learn more about loons and how we study them in Glacier, check out this resource brief: https://www.nps.gov/articles/common-loons-brief.htm
