Splatoon 3 artbook is coming! and they gave us hi res sample pages! so i translated them!

I’ve already preordered the book, and since I live in Japan I should be getting it very soon after release. mark my words I’m gonna go crazee translating it i need that Lore

In the meantime, some translations of the sample pages! take a look under the cut:

Page 44, IKIMONO (Living things)

yellow text: Among the living things in the Inkling world, a wide variety of species exist. There are creatures that can take on a humanoid form as well, called "Inklings" and "Octolings", the former being squids, and the latter being octopuses. white text in gray box: The old and the new mix to make the Splatland's youth culture The young people who grew up in Splatsville take pride in being born and raised in the Splatlands, and there is an extremely strong sense of solidarity in the community. They deeply cherish their old local culture, which is unsophisticated and simple, yet strong. At the same time, they like to make fun of urban areas such as Inkopolis for acting like they're "all that". On the other hand, many of them secretly yearn for that sophisticated, high-collar, Inkopolis culture. The current culture of chaos created by the youth with such a flip-flopping mentality is becoming increasingly global.

I’m going to translate these roughly. character select screen outfit, left: lines pointing to reflective goggles, a mask that blocks dust, and the cape. the cape is made from kelp, and is meant to block out sunlight. hero suit outfit, right: the “ultra light earpiece” is so light, it doesn’t even feel like you’re wearing it. The ink display is a digital screen. Boots are meant for rough terrain. Interestingly, agent 3 is holding a weapon called a “Hero Extinguisher.”

the gear on the left is called “hunting equipment”. The earpiece is based on an udon noodle. It’s small, but it has a deep sound (with bass i assume instead of sounding tinny?) Around the neck are cooling pads. The shirt is made from a seaweed fabric. apparently its wrapped around their upper body and kind of hurts to wear. you can see their underwear, but its the kind of underwear that’s supposed to be seen for Fashion. idk what its called but you guys know what im talking about. The ink tank is homemade. in the pouch of the backpack are snacks. to the right are very early concepts.

Page 62, Deep Cut concepts

It’s a lot of handwritten notes with a lot of pointing out what the drawing is, so I’m going to translate roughly.

bottom left is pointing out various things about frye’s head anatomy. small chin, forehead sticks out, thick neck, head curves like this and this etc. middle frye with the bit of green and red makeup is described as having a clown-like feel to it. tiny furthest right drawing is commenting on a specific nose shape concept as “bird-like.” she almost had the same nose as my main OCs what the

red arrows on the right: long arms, long thighs, squared shoulders are pretty. hand in the middle with black text: something like ‘if she has hands with ornamentation like this it makes her hands seem long’ bottom left: the little doodle of the face reads that her ‘mouth is kind of like this.’ the other text talks about how her eyebrows move asymmetrically, as having that kind of variety in the movement is key.

left: she’s saying something about sharks? apparently she was going to be associated with sharks with shiver being associated with eels instead. right: various sound effects. “looking around absentmindedly” “rocking back and forth” “dozing off.” on the bottom it shows her suddenly stiffening to attention.

left: in her left hand, it’s a sensu (japanese folding fan). in her right, its a harisen (the kind of folding fan used to smack people in slapstick routines) gonna be real here the text on the right is too cursivey i cant read it

not a lot of text on this page, mostly images, have a look yourself. top right passage: A majestic canyon where the history of the Inkling world can be seen in the strata and rock formations. Many enjoy rock climbing here. There's a spawn point that was once used for ink battles that no-one has bothered to remove.

The tarot cloth and the card backs both depict the deck’s four suits: Ink, Quills, Light, and Parchment. Explanation of how they correspond to the traditional suits below cut, if you’re curious.

The Literary Tarot being themed around classic works of literature, we divided the Minor Arcana into the different components involved in creating such a work: the tool one writes with; the ink that makes the words material; the pages that hold these words; and the light that must illuminate the page for anything to be read or written.

✒️Swords become Quills: the suit of action, change, and communication, relating to how we parse and structure the world. Quills were chosen because they represent the act of turning ideas into something tangible, structuring the chaos of your own mental landscape into something that exists outside of yourself. Whatever comes of your ideas, for better or for worse, it begins with you picking up whatever tools you require and setting yourself to the task of realizing them. As a bonus, Swords is also traditionally a suit associated with air, which meshes nicely with the feathers quills are made from; and a suit of double-edges, visually upheld by a feather’s split-down-the-middle structure.

⚫️Wands become Ink: the suit of passion, inspiration, and willpower, and above all, creativity. Ink in this deck represents the unlimited, fluid potential of inspiration. An inkwell holds entire novels, poems and worlds in potentia; it could become anything. It waits simply to be given form. In the deck, this suit is depicted with the most variability among the Minor Arcana - while the others have set motifs, Ink is worked into the illustrations in many forms, a nod to the suit’s focus on originality and changeability.

📜Pentacles become Parchment: the suit of material concerns, and the impact we can have on the physical realm. Parchment represents the means by which our inner world interact with the outer world: ideas committed to the physical page can be replicated, shared, and collected by others, becoming something tangible to people you may never even meet. But the satisfaction of holding a final draft comes hand in hand with the material hurdles of creating it, the format specifications and editing and other hoops you must hypothetically jump through. Parchment is a suit concerned with your resources: turning matters over from the dreamer to the realist, taking stock of what you have to work with, and what’s possible and sustainable based on that.

🕯Cups become Light: the suit of emotion and intuition. Where Swords/Quills deals with making the internal world external, Light is all about how we bring external influences into our internal lives. The suit has some overlap with Wands/Ink, in that both touch on imagination, but where Ink is the idea driving a story, Light is its heart, the emotional core. But Light is not just required for the creation of a story, but for the consumption of one. The finished book is illuminated, page by page, as the reader goes through it - in the same way the original manuscript was lit as it was written, page by page. It’s a suit that heavily emphasizes empathy, compassion, and how one reacts to others, which we thought meshed very well with the experience of being completely transported by a story, understanding the characters’ emotions and their worlds as if they were your own.

Reddit extracts: Old analysis that are terrifyingly accurate

[In the artbook, idk if you have seen it or not, but it's kinda a timeline tree where you have the main gems' timelines. Garnet's timeline, Lapis' timeline, Pd's timeline... Pearl's timeline. We know it's Pearl's because it's light blue. And her line starts with that statement, that "A new [...] sensible Pearl was custom made and delivered to Pink...". That's what debunks it, in my opinion. Also it's interesting to point out that Pearl is much older than Sapphire or Ruby, like about 8,000 to 15,000 years (it's literally written but the quality of the image is bad and hard to read) in age. Pink is at least 10k-17k (at least because the pic literally ends before showing the whole graph, she's very likely older than that). Lapis is as old as Pearl too.

But those are additional funfacts. I'm getting carried away!

In relation to gem placement, it's stated that in universe gem placement doesn't affect gem personalities, but from a writing standing point, it does tend to matter. That "sensible" from the chart implies that whoever was the Pearl before her was not sensible. That could mean, not like a Pearl, not appropiate, not smart enough to follow the rules, which are all very similar concepts but they have subtle nuances.

I personally think that this Pearl had a very good relationship with Pink because Pink loves chaos, she loves the unexpected and the unknown, everything out of the norm. She's curious like that (again, it's in her personality, not in her learned behaviours), and because she's so upper crust it's unthinkable to make friendships with gems different to her. This Pearl was probably the closest thing to a friendship before everything else happened. So under this logic, it's so hard to believe that someone like Pink could have hurt someone like this Pearl, even by accident. It's just so weird and out of character.

If she had a close friendship with Pink, if she had done something as unthinkable as having an equal relationship with a Diamond, then that would explain why she's not sensible. And of course, it's her fault, because a Diamond doesn't make mistakes, right? So she's punished. She's taken away from Pink.]

[Because idk imagine they take away your friend, or if we wanna dehumanize people in diamond's eyes, your toy, and you don't understand why and they don't tell you where they're gone. Or they do tell you, and you are horrified by it, so much that you want to escape those thoughts, block those memories, even if that means never mentioning the one who did it (ehem ehem.....), to protect yourself from that anguish.

[There is something about her that is really interesting: she's a chameleon. She mimicries, picking up features from her surroundings and adopting them as her own.

In a way, it's a form of learning. Babies do this, kitties do this, puppies do this... And even as adults, we also do it.

It's natural for her to think she's in her right to colonize. It's the only thing she knows. That's what she's made for, right? That's what the diamonds do, what the *other* diamonds do. But not her. Why?

This is something she wonders herself about, it's not me making a question. And she has so much time to reflect on that, to bottle up feelings (not a trait, but a learned behaviour). [I think it's tremendously out of character. The way she never mentions White, despite the fact that there was a moment in which they apparently were in good terms, the parallels with Marty and Greg... Make me think that something happened between them that broke the relationship, and I think this Pearl could have had something to do with it.]

What do we know about... Basram

A.k.a. the first post in the ‘WDWK’ series. Well, it’s kind of hard to keep in mind all this information found in various artbooks and other sources, so I'll try to put it all into a single post regarding the selective topic. I will make them as many and about such topics as I’ll feel necessary in the progress of the story, so the posts probably won’t be regular or follow some kind of structure. Yeah, they will be a mess as you can see from just looking at this one. But I expect to make at least a few of them.

And the first will be about the Gaean country of Basram. I tried to find what I could about it as I was thinking of Cyro, an original character coming from that country, who was introduced in chapter 4. And well, as I said in the author’s note, the official information about Basram is very scarce. But I will list all I could find here and also attempt to do a little analysis (or rather, I’ll be grasping at the straws tbh).

Note: I’ll be using abbreviations for the artbooks, ‘ESCAB’ is for the Escaflowne Settei Collection Artbook, ‘EFB’ are the Escaflowne Filmbooks

Canon information:

1. Basram is the only republic from among the Allied countries (EFB 6)

2. The coat of arms represents entwined double dragons

As seen in the artbooks (the text says ‘Basram crest’):

Regarding the colors, it’s hard to the flag in a screenshot, but it’s indeed red so these ancient images for ants with the copyright of Sunrise studios (??) that still float around the web look quite legit:

3. The design of the uniform for Basram soldiers

EFB 6 depicts the uniform of the common soldier (left) and the general.

According to the ESCAB, this is in fact a specific Basram general by the name of Quarto (Kuaruto):

However, in the series itself we see a different-looking commander instead - none other than Mr. Bombastic himself:

Since his ordinary pal from the artbook is present at the scene as well, I would say they just changed the design of the general in the end.

4. The position in the southeast of the ‘known Gaea’

At least as depicted by the part of the map of Gaea from one of the artbooks. According to it, the known neighboring countries are Egzardia to the Northeast, Asturia to the Northwest and Freid to the Southwest.

5. The development and use of the energist bomb

Basram decides to use the chaos on the battlefield and use their new weapon called the energist bomb, not only to wipe out the Zaibach army, but also to weaken their allies and assume the dominant position from among them and “rule Gaea themselves”.

Then there are several depictions of Basram guymelefs and that’s it for canon-only.

And now it gets more specific, but also way more speculative...

1. Republic

ESCAB says most of the hundreds of Gaean countries are monarchies that evolved from tribal communities where one clan accumulated enough power to rule over the others. Basram is apparently one of the exceptions. Republic (res publica - the state is a “public matter” made by and for the people) often comes to be as the result of overthrowing a tyrannic ruler (or ruling class/group), or via revolution. I chose that path as well, even though there probably are examples of state bodies which were already created as republic, too. With massive social changes, several groups can be hit hard of course, so I tried to incorporate that a bit when creating Cyro’s backstory.

2. Crest

Dragons here, dragons there, dragons everywhere. That’s Gaea for you. The official flag of Basram is the familiar symbol of symmetric entwined serpentine creatures, which probably can be dubbed as dragons. It’s quite similar to the crest of Asturia, which you see on the flags and banners, but also in the huge ‘altar’ thing at Millerna’s wedding:

So, it may have a religious connotation. In Asturia, it probably represents their sea dragon god, Jeture. But I was not so sure what it represents in Basram. The position of the dragons is certainly reverse from Asturia above (they face away from each other) and they seem to be breathing fire out of their mouths.

Well, since I’ve been writing this fic for a while, I had decided that Basram would have some sort of sun worship long time ago. But it was only recently I have discovered about the double dragons of Basram, so I tried to incorporate it somehow. In the end I settled on the dragons representing the Sun and the Moon (and no, I was in no way original, see for example the Gandhara dragons).

In Gaea’s case, it would probably be the Sun and the Mystic Moon. And the Moon can be their offspring. Just fanwanking here.

When it comes to the Vis Arcana universe, Cyro used to be a monk of Tonatis, the male/Sun aspect. But maybe there is (or was) a complementary female religious order worshiping the Moon?

I made the geographical terms I used correspond to this theory, Cyro mentions Heliopoli and I have thought of Lunasta. Kind of obvious, right? (I have not been too creative)

Anyway, it’s quite possible that the dragons were simply meant to represent Jeture as well, because it looks like Basram borders with the same sea as Asturia. The sea, where, you know, Jeture is supposed to reside.

3. Uniform

There are a few pointers of what Earth countries served as inspiration for the Gaean ones. The clothes being one of the more obvious. And what we are looking at here is an obvious case of a pickelhaube, which together with the overknee boots points right in the direction of Prussia for me. I mean look at this 19th century Prussian cuirassier [IMG SRC] side by side with our guy for example:

Or another good example here.

Of course, there are more countries and armies which used the pickelhaube over the history and maybe some of them would look similar, too. And I don’t think we should simply put a ‘=‘ between Basram and Prussia anyway, because this is still a fantasy universe, but well, there seems a certain inspiration. And for those familiar with European history, the militarism of Basram may come as less of a surprise.

4. Geography

According to the map, Basram is located quite down south, souther than Asturia itself, nearing Freid. And that would make the climate quite Mediterranean/hot. But only if you think in Earth’s terms. These people do not really look like they live somewhere in a warm climate, but heck if I know. On the map it looks like they have a seacoast, some major rivers and mountains. Then there is that thing of Gaean map being just the rotated version of ice age Europe which would tell us more about the topography, but nah. Too lazy for that for now.

5. Energist Bomb

Well. The whole bomb business may also sound very familiar. A new, unexpected strange weapon with enough destructive force to wipe out whole armies and cities, leaving nothing in its wake. Maybe even more so when you know what followed in the series, i.e. the allied countries turning on each other. The nuclear bomb was not just about Japan either, it was also about deterring any potential future enemies from among the Allies (well, especially one of them). And the US certainly certainly were a republic from the beginning. So yeah, more sources of inspiration here at work probably...
