I’m leaving academia (at least for now)

… and I thought I would tell you why. After getting sick, and all the ways my university was unwilling to make concessions for my new disability, I certainly became a little disillusioned with everything. But starting to build up my proposal for my new PhD, while also working in actual coding of websites and games, it started to become eminently more and more obvious that I want to code. I’m ill. I’m probably not getting much better. I can’t work a normal job or commit to specific times. But put my fingers on a keyboard and it’s like everything is suddenly right with the world. Like I’m not ill. Like I’m not in this chair. I’ve fallen in love with coding all over again. I need to be able to work on my terms, with my own skills. So I’m going to keep contracting and coding, with multiple projects already lined up. Nothing earth shattering. But I’m going to be my own boss and do the things I love. No publish or perish, no classes to give, assignments to grade. My new life on my terms.

I’m going back to my PhD!!!!

My university finally came back and said they weren’t going to make any accommodations for my new disability, and so I’m transferring back to the uni I did my masters at to work with the same supervisor. I’m seriously excited and currently reading many, many textbooks, articles, and reports. I’m getting this d*mn degree. Just watch me.

your wheelchair falls into a pothole and you have to unbuckle your seatbelt so you can fall onto the grass and stare mournfully at the chair that you most certainly can’t lift up by yourself.

Followed quickly by

TFW four different cars stop, one of which actually makes a u-turn, and nice, lovely strangers get your chair out of the pothole and help you back into it.

Sometimes when you feel the worst you can, you see the best in people.

Rules: Answer the questions in a new post and tag 20 blogs you would like to get to know better.

  • Nickname: Cake! Through a bit of a misunderstanding when I first visited Canterbury, England
  • Starsign: Cancer - a crab and a disease; I’m devastated
  • Height: 5′6″
  • Last thing I googled: “When should I go to the doctor for a sinus infection” - the answer was “today”
  • Song stuck in my head: I always have a song in my head, except for today, where I keep repeating this beat I heard on the radio
  • Last movie I watched: The Theory of Everything - great movie; poor depiction of Stephen Hawking
  • Last tv show I watched: Criminal Minds - I’m too loyal to quit it unless MGG leaves, but my how far it’s fallen…I can barely stand to watch at this point (before that I was binging Downton Abbey)
  • When did you create your blog: Around August or September 2016?
  • What kind of stuff do I post: Stuff about my PhD, aesthetic things, motivating things, brainy things
  • Do I have any other blogs: I do, a gen fandom blog I started in 2010, but it’s neglected; I also have some wordpress blogs about my travels, but I’m not linking those here
  • Do I get asks regularly: Nope; I’d be happy to answer though
  • Why did I choose my url: Because I’m rubbish at choosing URLs
  • Gender: Female
  • Hogwarts house: Ravenclaw, no question.
  • Pokemon team: Let me just look for that document about my lineup I made BACK IN 2009: Espeon, Dewgong, Pikachu, Dratini, Ponyta, Mew. I never played the games so this is wildly unrealistic, but I was an avid fan of the show and one of the few kids to learn how to play the card game.

  • Average hours of sleep: 8 - I’m strict and my body is demanding
  • Lucky number: Don’t have one
  • Favourite characters: Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds, Q from Skyfall, Will Graham from Hannibal, Newt Scamander from Fantastic Beasts, Dick Greyson and Barbara Gordon from pretty much any version of Batman, Hermione Granger from Harry Potter; basically, find the nerd and that’s my favorite
  • How many blankets do I sleep with: One; I switch out duvets with the seasons
  • Dream job: Academic research - anything that lets me read and write and do statistics on crime stuff
  • Following: 109

I tag:  @roundlittledog, @lavendermedusa, @notafraid-ofvirginiawoolf, @madscientista, @rudescience, @to-rend-your-ventricles-apart

(No pressure, though, especially if you’ve already been tagged)

compscicryptoandtea replied to your post “so today i gave a small talk during our grad student colloquium (our…”

I have this issue too. I generally practice presentations going purposefully very slowly, which feels really weird, but when I inevitably speed up in the actual talk, I’m still slower than I would be otherwise. :P

that’s a good idea! next time i’ll practice talking way slower than i normally would and hopefully it’ll help.
