When my father saw one of the Twombly pieces I had [Five Greek Poets and a Philosopher, 1978], he was just appalled—you know, “You bought this?” I would never brag to anybody about how much things are worth—except to my father, because that was the only thing he understood. But he was even more stupefied when I told him. So for Christmas one year, he did this little drawing for me that just said, “C-R-A-Z-Y” [C-R-A-Z-Y, 1994].

I put it on a little piece of cardboard, imitating Cy Twombly. The thing that amazed me was that as much as my father hated that piece and was bewildered by it, the work somehow spoke to him artistically. It made him make art, which he had never done.

Treasure House  2022

Treasure House is a historical reference to the generational experience of making, bound to domestic and household responsibility. As embroidery and weaving are largely regarded as the birthplace of women's industry and liberation towards equality and financial independence. 

The artwork begins in 1972 when the small enterprise movement saw each household become the 'living room factory'. Thischildhood  experience with women-led industry became a life-changing experience for artist Jui-Pin Chang, cementing family obligation and craft-led making as lifelong components of her art career. 

The architecture of the Whare (Maori) or Mother Room (Amis) references the 5000 year DNA connections across the Pacific Ocean between the Dulan Coast and Aotearoa. Its construction speaks to the domestic offerings of Xiang embroidery, traditional folk art made by women, that carry the distinct characteristics of Chu culture. These treasured bedquilts were gifted to the artist Jui-Pin Chang to honour her marriage when she was first able to travel to mainland China (1988) with her father after Martial Law ended (1949 -1987) Politically and personally historic these quilts for the marital bed, are stitched with the traditional symbols of happiness for women.  Realist forms in hand dyed silk,  the rising phoenix, one hundred children, pine cranes and peony flowers symbolise dreams of equality in union, fertility, long life and prosperity respectively.

Cordelia Tam Solo Exhibition 

● タイトル『静物』

京都で滞在中、様々な場所から広告等を貰い、それらを色で選別して紙糊に混ぜ合わせ、 別に保管していたまた日常的な買い物に付いている食品のパッケージの型に入れて自然乾燥させました。

そうしてできたアースカラーの（当DM画像の）紙の彫刻は静物（still life = 画題となる物）となります。

静物（画題となる対象物）は描き手の精神や社会を反映し、それは、ありふれた物の再発見や、光や色、形の一体の協調が表現に繋がります。

今回の作品を通して、私が感じた京都の穏やかな暮らしや色彩の印象が伝われば嬉しいです。

● Exhibition Content "Still life"

During my stay in Kyoto, I collected flyers from different places and kept daily food packaging, so they became my materials and moulds. I sorted out those flyers with similar colors and blended them into paper paste. They were put in different moulds to dry naturally. The earth tone paper sculptures created were presented in the form of still life.

Sill life can be a mirror of the society or the soul, a rediscovery of quotidian objects or an expression that coalesces light, color and form into synchronous relationship. The work conveys my impression of the serene lifestyle and colors of Kyoto.

私は香港で生まれ、カナダで学び、 2020年にメルボルンRMIT大学のMFAプログラムを卒業し、活動をしてきました。 私は人間と自然のつながりを探求するために、日常的な素材の数々を協調させながら組み合わせ、都市の生活の中で調和に向かった着想の整合性をテーマにした複合的な作品を制作しています。 私の作品は香港、台湾、オーストラリアでも展示され、2018年オーストロネシア国際芸術賞大賞を受賞しています。

● Biography

I was born in Hong Kong and have studied and worked in Canada.  2020 graduate of RMIT University’s MFA program.  I create multi-disciplinary works to explore the linkage between human and nature, combining everyday material with themes of conformity to inspire towards harmony in urban life.  My works have been exhibited in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia, and won the 2018 Austronesian International Arts Award-Grand Prize.

● タイトル『残って消えた』

香港のビジュアルアーティスト『マシュー・ツァン（曽敏富）』の京都での初個展は、彼が京都でのレジデンス体験を通して、自身が成長してきた場所の生活環境や人々の変化に対する気持ちを作品として表現しています。

タイトルの”Remaining and gone（残って消えた）”は、以前の作品群 “Before Collapse（崩壊前)"に続くものです。 木炭、アルミホイル、樹脂などの素材とビデオ、撮影を組み合わせ、マルチメディア・インスタレーションとして制作しています。 この作品は現実の物質性と超常的に理念的なもの観点から、転化、時の経過、喪失の流れを追っています。作家は創作の過程から、自己と周囲の環境の変化の関係を注視し、作品を通して鑑賞者と共有することを目指しています。

●アーティスト略歴

私は香港のビジュアル・アーティストです。 2009年に美術学士 (BFA)、2016年に美術修士 (MFA)をオーストラリアの RMIT大学で取得。 その作品は、時間、変化、プロセス、物質性の関係による探求です。それら主に木、氷、炭など様々な自然素材を使用し、燃やす、溶かす、凍らせるなどのプロセスを利用しています。 私の作品はインスタレーション、ビデオ、写真、彫刻作品として発表しています。また、2012年からは香港芸術学校で講師を務め、作品は香港以外の海外でも展示され、アートコレクターによって収集されています。 2018年にはオーストロネシア国際芸術賞大賞を受賞し、 ハーバーアート彫刻公園2018に参加しました。

●Artist Biography

I am a Hong Kong visual artist. I completed my BFA in 2009 and MFA in 2016, both with RMIT, Australia. My works explore the relationship between time, change, process, and materiality. My works mainly with a variety of natural materials including wood, ice, and charcoal, and utilizes processes including burning, melting, and freezing. My artworks are presented in installation, video, photographs, and sculptural objects.

Since 2012 I have been a lecturer at Hong Kong Art School. My work was exhibited in Hong Kong and overseas and collected by private collectors. In 2018 I was awarded the Austronesian

We would like to thank everyone who took time out of their precious and pleasant autumn time to visit the exhibition.
