A little update on the game side
So what I'm chewing through now is blocking in all of the player's movement code. Here's the chart I'm using as a working document;
Tumblr media
Green check means a move is blocked in, and (mostly) working, so I'm about half way there. Here's Ledge Climbing, baby!!!!
Some of it is a little glitchy, but I am working with a 'general-to-specific' mindset. Slap it in there, fix it in a refactoring pass and chew through bug reports when I get it into player's hands finally. (Shout out to @docvalentine for technically being the first person to download and play a build of Andy Jam.) When the movement is blocked in, I am going to start putting in some better animations than the placeholders I've been using. (Actually, his placeholder animations in the Unreal Build didn't survive a rig update, so in a lot of the footage he's just T-Posing around...). When his animations are in, I am going to start doing a little sound design and implementing sound code to his systems. Speaking of footage, the first devlog is going to be up before the end of the month (so I guess this year...) There's a list of edits I want to make before I put that up publicly. The first devlog is going to be showing off a lot of the old unity stuff, some of the new (bad) unreal stuff. The goal is for the second devlog to be out early 2024 and show off Andy movin' and groovin' with some smoother animations and some actual sound coming out of him. Anyways here's my development process.

Thanks for stickin' around on this wacky little project. If you'd like to support it, here's the Patreon Link.

Here’s the progression of the very first character portrait concepts I created for Dungeons of Aether!
Being the protagonist of the game, I of course started with Fleet! 🦊
Character portraits were categorized by “Face-Only” and by “Fully-Body” expressions. I initially began by designing expression with various stages of intensity, but we condensed them to less, but more flexible usage within the game’s story script.

Boss vs Player
– The core story design of The Dark Queen of Mortholme –
Tumblr media
A game about being the end boss of a game. A hero comes in to challenge you, and even after you mercilessly destroy them, they return. That's because they're the player character, and each time they become stronger as they figure out your mechanics, upgrade their armour, find health potions, etc.
That's what it says in my old design notes, and although the idea's gone a lot further than that, it's still pretty much on point. The game starts with the final boss fight with the slight adjustment that you're playing as the boss. The so-called hero you're facing dies in one hit, unceremoniously. A pathetic attempt against your vastly superior power.
But you've barely made your way back to your throne when they're at the door challenging you again. They might be immortal, but also clearly an idiot. Except this time, they dodge out of the way of your massive weapon. No matter, you crush them on the next swing.
They come back and prickle you with their sad toothpick of a sword. First it was funny, now it's getting annoying.
They keep coming back. It feels too ludicrous to admit, but you're getting a little nervous.
---
It's a story about someone who's been given no room to grow and no ability to learn from mistakes trying to understand someone who has nothing but that. It's the stubborn force of change versus the might of the status quo. The unstoppable force against the immovable object, except the immovable object starts to notice she's crumbling.
If you were a boss facing down your inevitable death after a long dance with your ever-improving opponent, would you begrudge the them for dealing it to you? Would you be proud?

“Can you pull in Leviathan with a fishhook or tie down its tongue with a rope? Can you put a cord through its nose or pierce its jaw with a hook?
Will it keep begging you for mercy? Will it speak to you with gentle words?
Will it make an agreement with you for you to take it as your slave for life?” - Job XLI

I did the Exterior design for the Dinostop set in the Mitchells vs the Machines. It was a challenging assignment as the set had already gone through multiple artists before it landed on my desk. My Final version is influenced heavily by an earlier version done by my boss, Production Designer (and genius) Lindsey Olivares, as well as by the hilarious story boards from Head of Story Guillermo Martinez. The Director, Mike Rianda  as constantly pushing me to exaggerate the Dino designs to make sure they retained the comedic impact of the Boards. Its amazing how much back and forth there was to make sure this set was stupid as fuck. Had a blast doing this full painting as well as all of the bits and pieces.
