If you think the Roman Empire fell in 476 AD, I'm here to tell you: No, it didn't!
The Metropolitan Museum of Art summarizes the history of the Roman Empire! This explains why Greeks called themselves Romans till the 19th century!
Tumblr media
transcript: In 330 A.D., the first Christian ruler of the Roman empire, Constantine the Great (r. 306–337) (26.229), transferred the ancient imperial capital from Rome to the city of Byzantion located on the easternmost territory of the European continent, at a major intersection of east-west trade. The emperor renamed this ancient port city Constantinople (“the city of Constantine”) in his own honor (detail, 17.190.1673–1712); it was also called the “New Rome,” owing to the city’s new status as political capital of the Roman empire. The Christian, ultimately Greek-speaking state ruled from that city would come to be called Byzantium by modern historians, although the empire’s medieval citizens described themselves as “Rhomaioi,” Romans, and considered themselves the inheritors of the ancient Roman empire.

As a Greek it's really bittersweet that the towns which belonged to Greeks are no longer theirs. Yet our ancestors left their mark and in Asian Minor there are evidence both from ancient Greece and Byzantium.
However it's sad they don't get the respect they deserve and now they make a comments war over the name of Constantinople.
Istanbul literally comes from the GREEK WORDS "Εις Την Πόλη" (in the city), so even if people debate about the name they should know that Both names have Greek roots. It's just the latter was inspired by the Greek language it's not 100% Turkish related 😅

Remaining christian icons in Hagia Sophia, an Orthodox church turned to a mosque after Ottomans took Constantinopole, todays Istanbul. If it remained a church today, it would be the biggest Orthodox Christian church in the world.

The part in PJ that says:Well, certainly. The gods move with the heart of the West."
"The what?"
"Come now, Percy. What you call 'Western Civilization'. Do you you think it's just an abstract concept? No, it's a living force. A collective consciousness that has burned bright for thousands of years. The gods are part of it. You might even say that are the source of it, or at least, they are tied so tightly to it that they couldn't possibly fade, not unless all of Western Civilization were obliterated. The fire started in Greece. Then, as you well know - or at least I hope you know, since you passed my course - the heart of the fire moved to Rome, and so did the gods. Oh, different names, perhaps - Jupiter for Zeus, Venus for Aphrodite, and so on - but the same force and the same gods."
So Rian for some reason tied Greek gods with Western civilization. It's like Eastern Europe doesn't count and that other Europe countries didn't have their own culture. The Greek culture was brought to attention after the Renaissance but the root was in Rome as an idea for the Romans who were nostalgic to the Roman empire. Then the British...well they were so inspired that they stole artifacts. He claims about representation but erased Greek culture somehow from his series 😅
AAAAAAAAH READING THE TEXT AGAIN WAS SO PAINFUL! "Heart of the West" shuuut your mouth :'(
The reasoning makes as much sense as lasagna in spanakopita. As you said, it all comes from his very convenient ignorance. He could have literally said "the gods came here for a change of scenery" and it would have been 10000 times less problematic than this shit.
Did you notice how conveniently he didn't mention Constantinopole, the literal "next Rome"? Oh, yeah, I forgot about the ingrained ignorance about the Eastern Roman Empire. (Because only the West counts!) I guess, when Sultan Mehmed II conquered Constantinople and said that he became the "next roman emperor" and Greeks never stopped calling themselves "Romans" whereas the west Europeans stopped quite early, all that is of no importance.

Lately I've been thinking a lot about RoBul first & second bulgarian empire stuff(mostly second empire). Physically I think they were both kids when they meet(ike 6-9 years old), then pre-teens for most of the period of the second bulgarian empire (perhaps with Bulgaria hitting 14 or even 15[not very sure about this one tho] towards the end of the empire. Idk). Romania I am sure became 13 sometime in the (probably mid to late) 1300s.
Also, I think at first, Romania was the older one physical age wise and also taller. But by the end of the first empire Bul grew up a little and almost grew to Ro's height. Then...after the empire was conquered Bul was taken to Constantinopole probably. While Ro remained (and I believe was under the control of the pechenegs for some time). Yada yada yada the uprising of Asen and Peter happens yada yada yada Bul and Ro meet again. And...Bul is now taller than Ro. Not that much taller, but still.
IDK I just have so many thoughts about this!!
